More info on the mosnter :O if it wasn posted :O
! "As part of a “post-birth ritual,” as Abrams describes it, the monster is seen early on scratching his back on a building (destroying it in the process), to remove a layer of parasites that are set loose to wreak their own havoc on the city."
! The concept for the monster (affectionately known simply as “Clover” in-house) is simple, says Abrams. “He’s a baby. He’s brand-new. He’s confused, disoriented and irritable. And he’s been down there in the water for thousands and thousands of years.”
And where is he from? “We don’t say – deliberately,” notes Goddard. “Our movie doesn’t have the scientist in the white lab coat who shows up and explains things like that. We don’t have that scene.”http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/01/09/cloverfield-building-a-better-monster/

In reading that….Is it just me, or does that not sound like the whale design?
-
What other animal has parasites or things on it?

A new Jamie and Teddy video is online. And Jamie kills the teddy bear…
-
A bear monster then?
-
Oh man. Now I really can't wait to see it. When you can't even describe the monster, then it's fucking awesome.
-
When you can't even describe the monster, then it's fucking awesome.
Yeah, what is it with Abrams and coming up with strange shit you can see but can't describe?
-
Someone got a shot of the monster during a pre-screening..Don't click if you don't want to be spoiled.
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23679
It looks fucking awsome. -
Holy shit, its looks fricken insane, I didn't expect to like that. But damn.
-
Not clicking, but hopefully I'll go see it tomorrow. Can't wait.
-
Gonna try and hit the matinée tomorrow, can't wait!

I just came back from the film. It was…okay I thought. I think it has more impact if you are a native New Yorker (as I am.) So, I'm trying to take away the emotion from seeing my city blown to shit. From that, I think that the movie wasn't all too spectacular. It definitely needed more monster. I think I would've prefered a more traditional way of filming it, just so that we get some answers. The parasites were cool.
-
Just got back as well and WOW it was simply amazing/stunning. I thought there was just enough monster to truly make me want so much more, but was still more than satisfying.
! And the expendibility of the main characters had me especially delighted. Just when you thought you wanted a character to live CRASH.
Loved it.
-
I aw the midnight showing and it was amazing.
! Did anyone stay after the credits? Cause I did and I heard a whisper it sounded like Rob saying "Help us"
-
! Yeah, I stayed after the credits and I couldn't understand it at all. I figure that in just a short while the sound clip will be all over the internet so there's no need to worry.
-
Here's the sound clip reversed
http://boomp3.com/m/bd034dfca370Holy shit.
-
Nice! I knew that the masses would pull through. That explains why it was unintelligible.
-
The monster didn't seem to be that crazy looking but it got me into the theater so I guess abrams earned his 15.00
-
Just got back from it.
I usually hate shakey cameras in movies, but this one didn't bother me. I actually liked all of the movie until the very end. Seeing as there was no conclusion at all. The movie wasn't even an hour and a half long, so it's not like they didn't have enough time for a conclusion.
-
saw it
loved it
not the best movie ever or anything, but some moments were genuinely scary
and does anyone know
! exactly what was said at the end? nobody at our theater could figure it out.
this was also the frist movie ive been to where people were almost completely quiet through the end credits- no chattaring started up, it was weird
-
and does anyone know
! exactly what was said at the end? nobody at our theater could figure it out.
! If the csound is reversed it clearly says "It's still alive"
! Fucking Orgasmic. -
eh
i figured xD
thanks, though.
-
Why is everyone so happy with that message at the end? Maybe I'm missing something, but it just sounds like it's trying to set up for a sequel, and I think actually finishing the first movie is higher priority than setting up a sequel.
-
i heard that jj was interested in a sequel or a continuation type thing
-
I'm sorry, but I hated it. I thought it had absolutely no point.
! my friend noticed something falling in the water at the amusement park scene, I didn't though. Was it there or was my friend seeing things?
-
I saw it, and liked the movie. I hoped for more monster action though.
The early snippets, like the ones they saw on the TV (in the electronic shop) made me think it was the whale monster. The tail that whipped the Brooklyn bridge looked like a whale's too, so I thought there's gonna be a second monster throughout the movie XD
Here's to a sequel!
-
! The monster reminded me of Sin from FFX
-
This is a movie that you have to see in a theater. I won't buy it, but I loved the movie.
I liked the fact that it was 90 mins long, the length of a tape.
-
There's one monster from the American Godzilla's animated series that kinda reminds me of Cloverfield's…
!
Mainly the arms and the head, heh -
The first roar for some reason scared the hell out of me,it just came out of nowhere.
-
To my knowledge, this is the first film I've ever left early.
It's an interesting concept, sure; in fact, it's a concept that I downright love. Show the perspective of Joe Shmo during a kaiju attack, now that's an entirely fresh angle on an old genre.
But, and there is a major stickling point for me, there's a certain point where execution not only overwhelms a concept, but it desecrates the latter's corpse before setting it on fire. I hate shaky cam as a filmmaking technique, but I can and have toughed it out before to see how things turn out, like in Batman Begins.
The problem I had with Cloverfield is that the shaky cam never ends enough for a few sequences where the camera is laid down or the cameraman freezes for a brief second; such sequences where the camera are still are solitary, blessed islands in a sea of jerky motions and quickpans. Moreover, I never really felt enough of a connection to the characters that the annoyance (and downright physical discomfort) that stemmed from the way this movie was made wasn't mitigated enough for me to finish watching it.
As a general rule, hardly anything gives me motion sickness, but this film succeeded wildly on that front. The headache the film gave me accompanied me well after I had left the theater. If it weren't a shaky cam film, I probably would have loved it. As is, though, I don't know if I'll ever watch the whole thing again, even on TV.

for Greg, if he hasn't seen it already and isn't afraid of spoilers
edit: haha ubiq you're a wuss
okay, not really, but i don't understand the complaints. i guess people are just different, but mom has difficulties looking at rapidly moving things, and i get motion sickness in cars VERY easily, and neither of us had a problem with this movie
-
I loved this movie. Seriously some people may not like it because they expect to see some godzilla type shit. This movie solely focuses on how a group of friends attempt to escape from the monster. To me, this was pretty epic and seemed realistic. I want more! Only thing I hated about it was how short the movie was. It could have been sooo much longer.
Oh and this movie would be total shit on DVD. Classic monster film. Must see in theaters for it to get it's justice
-
Giant monsters?
A movie showing up the perspective of people trying to survive a Monster atack instead of one focusing around the monster and how it dies?
How come I have heard nothing about this movie? :(
OH WAIT…
Points location
DUH.
Anyways, knowing that I, Legend will just hit the theaters over here, I think I'll have to wait a while to see this one.
-
I have to say, I really didn't have too high hopes for it since I really don't like the first-person style of movies, and maybe it was because I had somewhat lowered expectations, but that was one entertaining damn movie. It pulls off the style really, really well. The shaky cam didn't bother me at all since I got pulled into it deep enough, it wasn't like The Bourne Ultimatium where it bothered the hell out of me.
One thing I want to know, though, is:
! Where the hell did the thing go after it chomped on Hud a little bit? It just left the other two alone and went about its business? Just a minor little detail, doesn't affect my judgment or liking of the movie at all.
! my friend noticed something falling in the water at the amusement park scene, I didn't though. Was it there or was my friend seeing things?
! From what my friend told me, there was another tanker that got destroyed the month before (when the video was), but since the monster didn't come out around then it was just assumed as an attack or accident of some kind, and that was part of the tanker that fell into the ocean. The something falling into the ocean was definitely there. May or may not be right, but, whatever.
-
I hated this movie. Call me different, but the ending was horrible and I really didn't like any of the main characters except for Hud.
And I hated the first camera shakey thing. I sometimes get motion sickness and it bothered the hell out of me.
-
Well, there's going to be a Manga sequel. I wonder how will they pull that one.

nah
i've discussed it on three forums so far, it seems almost 50/50 with the love and hate

Just saw the movie tonight, and here's my two cents worth. Warning: spoilers below for those who haven't seen the movie.
I thought it was good, nothing amazing, but not as bad as the other movies currently out. I actually liked the way it was filmed since the camera wasn't as shaky and hard to follow as Blair Witch (sp?) and there was actual character development which some first person films don't usually have. Unfortunately, some of the characters were killed off before you had a good chance to relate to them. The only characters I cared about by the end were Rob and Beth.
The monster was a lot different than I expected it to be, but overall the design was just alright for me. I feel like some of its potential was wasted since it only used its whip-fin thing once and never used the arms except to move (I thought it would've been cool if it punched a building and reduced it to rubble). Anyway, the parasites that came off the monster I thought were cooler than the actual monster. They were strong, creepy, and had horrifying effects if you were bitten.
The character development was nice and, IMO, done well with how the movie was filmed. On top of that there were obvious World Trade Center references throughout the destruction. Where I'm leading is-I loved the ending. Alot of people hated it and I don't understand why. It gave the movie a point and sort of went along with all the 9/11, apocalypse imagery. Enjoy life/live every day to the fullest because you never know what tomorrow might bring. The ending brought out the message strong and clear especially when Rob and Beth were just whispering, "I love you…I love you," and then BOOM! Dead.
Rating: 8/10

! You know, I walked out well before that, but the mere concept of that bothers me as it's essentially like a polar bear eating an ant. I could see it squishing him intentionally out of boredom, but biting him? Why not just have one of the parasites do it?
! I had the same basic problem with the scene in Godzilla 2000 when Big G and Evil Japanese Guy were apparently having a staring contest. -
I think the camera was what made it unique the movie would've sucked if it was shot like a normal movie. And HUD freakin' made that movie. His dialog when he talks about the burning homeless man was pretty funny.
-
Given what we've seen from previews, how could anyone expect the camera to be still?
I'm pretty sure watching 24 (ugh) has made me immune to shakey cameras. They like to shake the shit out of it for no apparent reason so I'll probably buy blips when they're running from a gigantic whatever the shit it is.
edit:
Well, evidently it isn't coming out until April here which means I'll no doubt see the monster before then so I went head and looked around.
Monster looks dumb as fuck.
Seriously.
The hashed-up fake pics on the internet look way cooler than that shit.
-
Hmm, I saw this movie last night too.
Everyone boo'd and threw shit at the screen at the end,
cuz the ending was much of a "Ohh.." ending.Personally, I enjoyed it in a way.
The fact that you were watching it in a POV fashion was great.
The concept was really good.
But it could've been longer. -
Could have been? The movie should have been longer, most definitely. They had a plot set up, and then they just decided to blow it to hell and end the movie. Or, that's the idea I got, anyway. I mean, some closure would be nice; I know this is almost too much to ask from J.J but man.
But anyway, I thought it was very enjoyable. My favorite scene hands down
[hide]was when they were attacked in the tunnels. When Rob said "Turn on night vision", I was like "nonono don't turn on night vision please anything but night vision".[/hide]
-
I'll say that it was an experience that you could not get anywhere else, but I didn't like the ending.
-
For a movie entirely filmed with a handycam, it was brilliant. But once you start comparing it to classics like Gojira and The Host you start to run into some trouble.
! The monster was pretty strange looking but kind of cool at the same time. Some of the pictures online gave it more justice than it deserved though.
-
It was a pretty good flick. It was just crazy, though some actions felt unrealistic and stupid. I was hooked the all time, and I can at least say I enjoyed it.
