Hell you really dont see the monster until the end anyway. That was out first clear shot at it.
I was previously uninterested, but now I am intrigued
The ending didn't bother me that much. It's filmed with a shakey handheld camera what do you expect, sunshine and rainbows?
I Loooooooooooooooved this movie, definately lived up to the hype. I think the reason alot of people may not have liked it is because they wanted more monster, more explanations, and they expected a conventional monster movie. But I felt this wasn't about the monster, it was a character-driven piece set amidst a monster attack.
And to be honest, while the monster was effective and scary in bits and pieces, when you finally see it in full view at the end it doesn't work. Also, any more information on it would've just ruined the movie (1. doesn't make sense for these people to stumble on its backstory and 2. monster backstories suck anyway)
Here's my full review that I wrote on facebook flixster, I'll put it in spoiler tags.
! I haven't had this much fun going to a monster/scary/thriller movie in…...well ever! And the funny thing is, this really isn't a "monster movie" at all, it's a character piece. And it's a winner all around.
! The shaky-cam seems to be hit or miss with most, but if you ask me it worked incredibly well. It feels like shaky-cam, but we still get some amazing visuals, and if you suspend the disbelief that Hudd could get some of those shots you'll be in for a great looking movie.
! As far as the acting goes, it felt real. This is how I expect people to react to a monster attack on New York City, albeit I'd expect some more vulgar speech but that can be forgiven for the sake of story-telling.
! Now, let's talk about the story. Anyone expecting your typical monster-movie story will be sorely dissapointed. As I said, this movie is a character-driven piece set within the context of a monster attack (which is a genius move on JJ Abrams part if I do say so myself) I really felt for these characters, and I knew who they were, and their story was truly enthralling.
! And finally, we have the highlight of any monster movie; the monster! Just like anyone, I reeeeeeeeeeally wanted to know what the monster would look like. Well I have to say that throughout the movie, only getting glimpses of it is REALLY effective. The monster is bizarre, frightening, and the entire theater was jumping out of their seats at certain points. When we see the monster in full view towards the end however, not nearly as frightening.
! I've heard and read complaints that the monster didn't have any explanation, and that there was no plot. To these people I say "You just missed the whole point of the movie you dumbass!" This actually was NOT about the monster, it was about the characters. And let's be honest, movie monster origins are either Godzilla/King Kong rip offs, OR they're completely ridiculous anyway.
! It's pretty clear by now, I LOVED this movie quite a bit. Not only was it well made and entertaining, but I had a damn good time watching it. It wasn't just a movie, it was an expirience as well, and when I can have that much fun watching a movie then I know it was 10 dollars well spent.
! Oh, and before I forget, best ending line I've heard in years!
! This unconventional monster movie made me very happy, and dammit what a great way to start the 2008 movie season.
! Bravo Cloverfield, bravo!
Like I said there, another reason I really liked this is because not only did I enjoy it and think it was well-made, but I (and everyone else in the theater) had a great time watching it, and seeing it was a full-blown expirience that made the price of admission well worth it.
To anyone who complains about there being no explanation on the monster or it's origins: Shame On You! This movie was meant to show what people would really do during a monster attack. If there was an actual monster like this in real life, is it realistic for some kind of scientist or something to come out of nowhere and explain everything about the monster and its motives and origins?
Second, I loved the ending, the last 10 minutes were filled with enough action and emotion for me. I also thought it was great showing Beth and Rob on the ferris wheel(?) and she said she had a good day…so ironic.
I don't see why everyone was so disappointed with the monster, I thought it was great, whenever it showed up on camera I was very interested, even when we see the thing in broad daylight, because then you realize "This cameraman is probably about to die"
enough of a review
So did anyone notice a certain something in the background of the final scene?
PS: Hidden message= "It's still alive" backwards.
there are also smaller versions of it that are much less stupid looking running around eating people
Yes, we've known about these creatures for months before the release. They look niifty.
plus the monster's appearance isn't what's scary about it
Scary? Who said anything about scary? It just looks stupid. It should at least look cool. Some reviews were like, "How do you describe something you've never seen before?", whereas half of the Ultraman villains look cooler than that uninspired humanoid.
Just saw the movie and I enjoyed it. I did think the ending was pretty weak and it's a shame since it seemed like they just ran out ideas.
Blatant spoiler below
! I mean the helicopter crashes and you think that they're dead. Ok, I guess they're not. Damn these kids are tenacious. Alright, they're in Central Park and it's daylight. OH WAIT! DERP DERP DERP It da monster. Just standing there conveniently in front of them. Let's give everyone a full view of its face. Kinda bugged eye thing. Whatever. I felt it was unnecessary. I was perfectly content with the view from the helicopter. And yes, I agree that I don't know how the other two got away after Hud got…eaten/ripped in/tossed?
I was fine with the monster. I figured considering the hype of this movie that whatever it actually was would definitely disappoint the internet community. Though I must admit I was in love with the 'space whale' concept art floating around.
Also, I have to get me one of those cameras.
Yes, we've known about these creatures for months before the release. They look niifty.
Definitely, though the sound they make while attacking is kinda goofy at times.
than that uninspired humanoid.
It definitely wasn't.. very humanoid to me. Don't know what picture you're basing it off of since you haven't seen it yet. But if it's the same picture I saw of it prior to seeing the movie, it only showed the upper half of the creature, and at the time the picture made it seem bland and yes, humanoid.. but the lower half is a lot more complex than the picture I saw gave off.
Some reviews were like, "How do you describe something you've never seen before?", whereas half of the Ultraman villains look cooler than that uninspired humanoid.
Ohhh man, that's brutal.
but the lower half is a lot more complex than the picture I saw gave off.
Oh well if the lower half looks cool then I just need to eat my words.
-_-
I expected something I'd never seen before. The Predalien was more exciting than that.
I was expecting, I dunno, something words REALLY couldn't describe. Like um….this:
!
That is fucking unique and seems like something that might come crawling out of the bottom of the ocean that's been alive for thousands of years.
Not lanky B-level sci-fi rip-off scarecrow thing.
i would describe that as 'a crab glued to a whale'.
still looks cool though.
Humanoid? O_o I missed that .gif but it didn't come off as humanoid to me
More like
!
Okay maybe not exactly like that but its got crazy legs and a whale tail
! made me think it was the whale monster
Then it made me think there was a second monster (but I said this already)
Yeah, looks like a guy on all fours with a whale tail. I really was expecting something completely unique. I think it's the head that dissapoints the most.
Oh well.
It's not about the monster anyway. I'll check it out on DVD.
I agree though that the whale monster design (the first one, with legs) is by far the best. It just screams "OCEAN", which is Clover's supposed origin, but the one in the movie isn't bad either..
For a movie entirely filmed with a handycam, it was brilliant. But once you start comparing it to classics like Gojira and The Host you start to run into some trouble.
The Host wins in terms of design. Now that thing screams of "mutated fish monster". Sequel's in the making I hear.
Just came back from it. I thought it was awesome! The ending kinda sucked, but the rest was pretty damn cool!
! The monster wasn't what I was expecting, though it wasn't bad. The little spider things, though, were almost scarier than the huge one! The fact that they have bites that make people explode doesn't really help, either!
! Kind of a funny story - I was watching it with my older brother, and at the scene where the monster looked down at Hud, my brother said, "Aw, he doesn't look like he wants to hurt him! He's a nice monster! Why would the military hurt such a harmless creature?" Then after it eats him, "Oh, that's why. Nevermind." Hehe. The ending though, was basically, "Well, everyone died, and you don't know what happened. HA HA!" Oh, well, the rest of it was awesome!
it was an awesome movie, hands down.
as for the monster it was kickass, Greg I have no idea what your talking about. did you even see the movie???
The monster was fresh and new. It wasn't something that was ripped off from a old godzilla movie, it was like a cross between a unseen ocean dweller and a alien, but on a larger scale. The way it took so much shit and still kept going is unbeileable. The fact that it's still alive to even cool (it just screams sequal). And come on crabs that when they bite you you explode shortly after, thats ingenious. J.J abrams said that the monster was gonna be a new never before seen one and it was. I'm sorry if it hasn't met your expectations but deal with it and stop bitching about it alright.
The Host wins in terms of design. Now that thing screams of "mutated fish monster". Sequel's in the making I hear.
Yeah holy shit. THAT'S something you can't describe. I expected something like that times a bajillion million infinity times infinity. But no.
Greg I have no idea what your talking about. did you even see the movie???
No, I live in Japan, where it doesn't come out until April. Which is why I watched it online and formed my opinion that differs from yours.
Scary? Who said anything about scary? It just looks stupid. It should at least look cool. Some reviews were like, "How do you describe something you've never seen before?", whereas half of the Ultraman villains look cooler than that uninspired humanoid.
i just meant that if it were a giant, floating pac-man the movie still would've been intense
edit: wait, you watched the whole movie online?
i really liked it. I mean, i'm a pretty huge fan of stuff like 'signs' and etc, where it's more on a personal level, because I know that that would be me in that situation.
I decided that I would have been fine up until the part where the girl started bleeding from her eyes and exploded. i'm not gonna lie, that's when the movie stopped being fun for me and i'm pretty sure i would just said fuck you rob and left on the next copter outta there
also, motion sickness is for wusses and little girls
btw, why is the movie called cloverfield anyway
btw, why is the movie called cloverfield anyway
Reading up on it, it supposedly refers to the governments designation for the case revolving around the monster….or something like that.
Although I haven't seen the movie seen the movie myself, I did acidentally get to see some nice veiws of the big guy, and I kinda agree with Greg's stand on it's design. Not that it looks terrible, just pretty underwhelming (Notwithstanding DA ICEMAN'S hellbent views, otherwise.) compared to the estatic reactions towards it from fans.
Still pretty stocked to see the whole thing, though.
where it's more on a personal level, because I know that that would be me in that situation.
Yeah, this is what I'm interested in now.
I knew the camera would be shakey.
I figured we'd barely get to see the monster.
What I didn't expect was for it to look so plain.
But I did expect the human aspect of it to rule.
Typical Abrams material. Works like a charm almost every time.
I saw the movie and I thought it was quite interesting. At first the camera was a little unsettling, especially for people who don't do fps games or anything like that. But overall I felt constant anticipation after the events started and it was qutie enjoyable to some degree.
I for one liked 2 characters in that whole movie. Hud and Meleni
! Meleni's scene reminded me of the first Silent Hill game. Where the bleeding eyes and screaming of someones name before the officially fadeout has a lasting effect on a person cerebro cortex O_o
A more accurate picture of the monster
!
Doesn't really look anything like that other image from that random forum. It's not really a huge difference from the whale monster imo.
Every time I look at that I can only think, damn, he is gonna have carpal tunnel hell when he gets older.
My hope lies in a statement from (I believe) Abrams who said, "It's still a baby."
That provides some hope for the trunk of the creature but the head is just…I doodled shit cooler than that in high school. In fact....It's almost scary how close one of my drawings is to that head. I'd scan it if I was in the States.
Godzilla could totally kick that thing's ass.
Severe lack of giant mutated whale guys.
I enjoyed it quite a lot, especially the parts involving the monster getting the shit shot out of it.
Anyone else notice the little thing falling into the water in the final scene? The monster perhaps?
I just found pretty ironic how the guy was about to go to Japan before everything happened.
Anyways, the movie's going to be released over here as "MONSTROUS", wich would surely dissapoint many people who would go to watch it expecting another Godzilla movie.
!
Just got back from it myself, and I really enjoyed it. Was surprised since I got dragged to it thinking it was gonna be a chick flick(don't keep up with movies)
but it was really well done. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through
@Mr.:
Anyone else notice the little thing falling into the water in the final scene? The monster perhaps?
Going by the marketing, that's a red herring since the monster was supposed to have attacked a Chinese facility months before that part of the film took place.

The whale-looking sketch and the final thing are similiar, the final one is just less whale-y. I read somewhere the one we see is a baby though (interesting if true!)
Now that I look at the actual monster's face, his eyes remind me of the eyes that Stitch and all his cousins have in the Lilo and Stitch series….....A CLUE!???
Oh and the thing at the end of the movie, I've been reading alot about it. Some are saying it was like a meteor that hit something, which would somehow cause the deep sea monster to be awakened.

Ah, okay then.
One more questions, does the name 'Cloverfield' have any significance whatsoever?

Hasbro is making a toy of it for their websites.
$99.99…I might buy it.

Not a clue on that one.
Man, the more I look at the actual images of the monster and the more I think about how its body is designed, the more I have to wonder how in the hell it managed to decapitate the Statue of Liberty without shredding the rest of the Statue. It's hard to figure out how it could have gotten the necessary leverage to do so without falling over backwards.
It's a memorable sequence and all, but it really doesn't make much sense in the long run. The theorized whalemonster could have done it easily, but the creature we got?

i imagine he just whipped his tail and it went flying
nom nom nom
So I'm tempted to see this but there's a portion of my soul that tells me not to. I've driven between fascination and caution. I'm trying to save my money for a convention, I'm not too big a monster movie buff, but I'm intrigued by the hype. That's saying a lot since hype usually doesn't work anything on me, so there's one kudo for this film. I think I'll try to download it once I find it.
So what differs this from any other monster movie besides the advance special effects?
Well, this is like the first one I've heard about were the focus are the people going trough the "Monster atack" rather than the monster itself…
Huh, field of clovers
I bet they chose that title because it has nothing to do with the monster. Keeps it mysterious and stuff
It's a memorable sequence and all, but it really doesn't make much sense in the long run. The theorized whalemonster could have done it easily, but the creature we got?
Nah, I don't think monster movies has to completely make sense. There's stuff in King Kong (like how they managed to bring him into New York) that kinda bugs me from time to time, but it's still a great movie (1933 and 2005).

Well for one thing, calling it a "monster movie" is a bad way of describing what it is.
Sure it's got a big monster destroying New York, but "monster movie" suggests something like Godzilla, King Kong, etc. where the monster is the focus and you learn about where it came from etc. etc. In a typical monster movie the human characters play second fiddle, and often serve only to explain why the monster is there, and then to destroy it.
This time around, it's all about the people, and the monster is actually in the background more often than not.
i imagine he just whipped his tail and it went flying
Still presents the same issues. The monster is only 250 feet tall apparently, which is about a hundred feet less than it needs to be.
Nah, I don't think monster movies has to completely make sense.
Oh, I agree with that. For instance, Godzilla ought to collapse under his own weight; you have to toss out some things just in the interests of suspension of disbelief.
On the other hand, there really doesn't seem a motive for Clovis to attack the Statue of Liberty in such a fashion as what we see suggests that it deliberately did so. Now, if the head had come flying and the statue was completely ripped in half, that'd be different.
There's stuff in King Kong (like how they managed to bring him into New York) that kinda bugs me from time to time, but it's still a great movie (1933 and 2005).
It's been a while since I read it, but I seem to recall that the original novelization had an off-hand reference that said that the natives helped them build a raft because they wanted rid of Kong just as much as Denham wanted him. I don't know if that was added after somebody pointed out that the filmed version didn't make sense or if it just wasn't filmed for whatever reason. The fact that the book did include the scene with the canyon monsters that wasn't in the final cut probably means the novelization was based on the original script though, so they probably didn't think it was important enough to film.
Really, what bothered me about King Kong wasn't the physical issue of getting him back to New York so much as wondering if people were really going to just sit around and stare at Kong all evening.
Yeah, I definitely thought the same thing during the movie. It just knocked the head off and left the rest of the Statue of Liberty untouched. Of course I realized that you really need to shut your brain off and enjoy the movie.
Especially after
! Hud films the bridge breaking apart and still manages to get off safely with everyone else. I realize that it's in the interest of the movie that the viewers see what's going on, but COME ON.
Still presents the same issues. The monster is only 250 feet tall apparently, which is about a hundred feet less than it needs to be.
Height doesn't necessarily mean length, as we saw the monster easily took out the brooklyn bridge. That aside, this monster also looks like it's perfectly able to jump, so saying that it couldn't possibly do that type of damage is a little overexaggerating.
IMO it looks alot more capable to do damage than that whale thing, which I think looks stupid and incapable of doing anything more than beach it's self
:I

Oh, it's more than capable of doing that much damage, a creature that massive could easily smash down skyscrapers. It's just that I don't see how it could have done what we see in the film without doing more damage than what we see in the posters and what-not showing the aftermath of its attack on Ellish Island.
Well, at least I can't see it in a way that doesn't involve the monster doing a headstand and decapitating the statue with its tail or some other way that requires the monster deciding to go after the statue's head rather than just blundering into it or mistaking it for a living enemy. It's not an issue of strength so much as leverage and motive.
IMO it looks alot more capable to do damage than that whale thing, which I think looks stupid and incapable of doing anything more than beach it's self

Eh, I dunno. Maybe I just like the whale monster more than Clovis simply because it looks more like you'd have seen in a Godzilla film back in the '70s.
I still have a bit of trouble reconciling the images I've seen of the monster from the end of the film with the monster we see in bits and pieces of the film prior to then. Between the scene with the military fighting it and the glimpses we caught on the newsfeeds, I thought that it was a Biollante-esque tentacle creature rather than what basically looked like Kamakuras with a Terror Dog head.
Yeah, the head is what really…..REALLY bummed me out.
yeah, it did look a little unoriginal
those little things though, blegh! creepy
on NBC's today show Stephen king was on there and he mentioned how in his opinion The mist is a sort of prequel to Cloverfield. Yeah..Those monster's from the mist looked nothing liked the Cloverfield monster. I doubt he has even seen the movie. He just wants people to go see the mist.and he sit's in his office with an evil smirk on his face because people went to go see that crappy movie.
While the head didn't bother me much, I think it was totally unnecessary to the movie. We saw enough of the monster and it seemed like blatantly "OH HERE IT IS! LOOK AT ITS MAJESTY"
Would have been fine without it.
Also not crazy about finding the plot of the movie through subliminal Da Vinci Code viral marketing.
Oh well if the lower half looks cool then I just need to eat my words.

the thing you posted looks so fucking retarded i could shit on it.
seriously. would you really rather have that? i for one wouldn't. honestly.
a whale? a whale attacking manhattan?…....a WHALE? anything, but anything, is better than a whale monster. xD
