I really doubt Oda is that saintly. You're bound to experience shit on every job so he probably just keeps most of his problems to himself. He probably just has an insane amount of patience (something I lack almost entirely)
DragonBall is underrated
-
-
It's kinda unfair to say other manga artists don't love their job because they aren't Oda.
Alot of people, in everything, can love their job, yet get tired with it. Especially job's that deal with people.
Because let's face it, the majority of anime fans are fucking annoying.
I mean with deadlines and everything, it must really take a toll on someones personal life. Getting stressed out about things like that really can't be blamed on "You don't love what you do as much as Oda you piece of trash"
-
Oh, I agree. It's ridiculous the amount of shit they have to put up with for their craft. I respect all of them.
Oda's enthusiasm about the job is contagious, though. Like I said, he's a trooper.
-
This is why I love when kids on this forum say "I'M GONNA GO TO JAPAN AND BE A MANGA ARTIST"
They have no idea how much fucking work is involved, let alone how incredibly dumb the whole idea is at all
-
Hey.
I won't let you shit on Pokemaster's dream
-
I love Faulconer's music, especially the Buu saga. Which I own the CD to and play every so often. I've always wondered the name of the song which tended to play during a major villains death in the dub…I've never been able to find that.
-
I liked that carnival type music that played whenever Buu started beating the shit out of something.
but that's it.
-
On the topic of Oda not getting stressed out with his job. Maybe his wife is under the desk often.
Just a thought.
-
Can't think of the name or whatever, but the only Falcouner song I liked was the one that played during the Goku vs. Jeice/Burter fight up until Jeice and Burter accidently hit each other. Or atleast, that's the song that stuck to memory. And I kinda found Perfect Cell's kinda hilarious in an odd way.
-

I was only partially serious.
But realistically, people like Togashi and Toriyama that only bitch and whine about how hard it is, how much pressure it was and how apathetic they are towards their work are not rare.
Just because you're a famous artist/author doesn't mean you're rolling in the dough. So some of them lead VERY difficult lives. I realize that. But there are a lot of them who constantly moan and groan about deadlines or sluff off their work when….you know what? I don't wanna hear it. You tell stories for a living. I'm not saying it's easy because it's not but...what do you think you're being paid to do? You have dealines, it's part of your work. I have to wake up at 7:30 most days of the week to face a day of spoiled high schoolers that don't care about English. It sucks standing in front of them lecturing while they shout across the room about what they did last night. I totally understand where they're coming from because...they don't need English since they won't leave their small village town in the mountains and go directly to full-time work out of high school for a boring ass road construction job they'll hold for the rest of their lives. That doesn't make it suck any less when you're standing up there like a dumbass lecturing in a language they don't understand while they blatantly ignore you.
But you know what? I love my job and wouldn't dare complain about it because this is exactly what I wanted and knew I was getting into.
I don't mean to sound on the offensive. I'm sure it's remarkably stressful being a manga author but ya know...guys....you chose that path and I don't wanna hear about how much it sucks because it does make them sound bitter.
-
Honestly, the best thing the dub did was Cell's death, simply because his dying line was actually very well done and made Gohn go: "… Wow, that was goddamn cool."
And yeah, some mangaka are extremely annoying; Oku Hiroya is the first man to come to mind. "OH MAN, I NEED TO MAKE GANTZ BI-WEEKLY EVEN THOUGH A GOOD CHUNK OF IT IS DONE ON THE COMPUTER. OH MAN, I NEED ALMOST AN ENTIRE YEAR BREAK TO "GATHER MATERIAL" FOR PART 2"
-
What did Cell say?
All I remember is
"I'm gonna killa you HAHAHAHAHAOUUF HEY VEGETA GODDAMIWAAAAAAAAAAAH"
and "But I'm perfect."
-
The last one.
The way he said it, with the warpy "OH GOD I DIED BECAUSE I'M SUCH A SHITFUCK" effect, sounded really good.
-
I heard Tenkaichi 3 got delayed till Dec 3. That's a lie right?
-
I can actually picture him saying that and its kinda funny.
For the DB dub did they choose to put all the music from DBZ? Or was the original always using it?
I remember watching the spanish one and some themes come on that I hear sometimes in the dub.
-
The DB dub used the original bgm.
-
-
The DB Dub was so great that it epicness almost got rid off Naruto before the CN Dudes realized how shitty was to air Ben10 twice in the same night…..
Anyways, I don't blame Toriyama for getting bored of Dragon Ball. Hell, would you like if some random dude told you the correct way of raising your child? Well, it's not the same, and Jump is a business, but the point is obvious...
-
Here's a "Newbie Guide" and a "Rumor Guide" for all your Dragon Ball needs. Great reads for anyone.

It's more like "tired" then "bored", though. He was pretty much working nonstop for 15 years if you count dr. slump, and he even did a lot of work for the anime.
-
OVER-rated in my opinion.
And yeah, does Oda do something special against the stress or does he just go into "home care" ?
-
Reading Lobolover's posts is like solving a puzzle

Yeah, 'bored' is more about Togashi…seriously, putting him and Toriyama together is insane. Togashi clearly doesn't give a shit about his works and readers.
-
Not really, you just have to have a big enough imagination.
-

But it's like….so what?
That's his job you know? I understand it's rough, especially when you have to keep thinking of 'reasonable' explanations for two incredibly powerful people to exchage blows. But....he gets paid to do it. It's his job. I don't want to hear him moan and groan about how hard it is to make all the children of a nation smile with glee for generations.
15 years is a long time, but that's splitting it between Dr. Slump. Our man Oda has been doing it for 10 now. Hell, look at Golgo 13! That's decades of the same thing.
In short, yes, I agree they deserve leeway, but many seem to play the, "I'm tired and overworked card.", and it sounds selfish.
-
So how many DB/DBZ english dubs were there? And which ones were the good ones?
-Funimation English Dub
-Ocean's English Dub
-Blue Water English Dub
-Red River English Dub
-Silver Tea English DubWell, the Blue Water Dub's opening was even better then the Japanese intros.
It's like, DB Nick Jr. Style xD

With many mangaka, some have more fun than others, some merely make it a job and still others just gripe about everything. Somehow looking at some of what Togashi pulls compared to Osamu Akimoto, who's been creating new KochiKame chapters for over 31 years now with typically an occasional week off here or there in the same magazine…you just wonder about who makes this a job and who makes this something more.

Think again :sideways:
But seriously, it's so cute that it's impossible to hate. :s

Don't try to tell me it's impossible for me to hate anything
and that was very easy to hate

Watching that video is the equivalent of injecting saccharine into one's eyeballs.
Toriyama always struck me as kind of indifferent when it comes to manga. Like the last answer states I've had a sense that Toriyama isn't infatuated with manga like Oda or something, which definitely makes it seems that it's more work then anything for him. Interview hidden below for everyone who couldn't figure that part out.

Trunks: >:( DRAGON BALL INTERVIEW
-
This proves that Toriyama is a far lesser manga maker then Oda (waits for flames and dodges them efectively)
-
This thread makes me want to read Dragonballz now.
….I heard the fights are lame though.........

Does he look cross eyed to you too?

Toriyama's not lesser, just a tad jaded after being in the business for so long and creating two monster series and being the ultimate face of WSJ. Even though Oda is having a lot more fun, he ultimately called Toriyama his ultimate inspiration. (even though he also has some inspiration from Yumetamago and probably a couple others)

if your reading the manga the fights aren't lame at all
especially early dragonball

I found it disturbing that toriyama didn't even remember tao pai pai at first during their interview together
-
Why would he remember a minor character that he created, and then quickly killed off 20 years ago, anyhow?
-

Don't forget he was also doing designs for Dragon Quest over the years of doing Dragon Ball. I just think the man's lost interest really, more than it is "I'm tired". The various one-shots he did till' 2006 after Dragon Ball is proof of that.
-
As great as Dragonball was, gag manga was truly Toriyama's forte.
-
Yeah, you see it in the way he just powers his characters up more and more,ad absurdum to make the story stay "interesting" for younger readers.
-
What?
If you're going to bash him atop of Oda's swollen testicles, you can just not post.
-
….....what?
And PROVE my post was wrong in any way,if thats how you think.
-
Part 1 of dragonball?
-
DBZ,especialy after Namek.
-
If you think about it, DB from the beginning to about just around the 22nd Budokai (the one with Tienshinhan) was a perfect hybrid of martial arts madness and comedy, not turning serious and into the series everyone remembers in the tardish fandom until the Piccolo arc….and not returning to a more comedy/action hybrid until the Buu arc. (by which everything had just become too powerful and Toriyama finally realized he had to stop taking it so seriously) While the more serious sections have memorable moments, I think its this section in particular that has made DB so overrated and so copied by many of today's action shonen writers.
-
Eh, even so, the Piccolo Daimao arc and the 23rd boudoukai are probably my favorite part of the manga. It was serious, yea, but there was plenty of humor too, and all the characters got their little moment in the sun. It was exciting and fun, without being pretentious.
-
and it's not even that I disagree.
but calling something bad when it doesn't try to be good(the plot I guess) is rather pointless.
I mean that's like saying kinnikuman sucks because the plot revolves around tournaments and over the top moves instead of being littered with plot twists and emotional moments.
-
My favorite part of the entire Dragonball series is still probably the Red Ribbon Army Saga. I thought it was just badass that one kid took out an entire global army crime syndicate.
-
Also, complaining that the characters leveled up too much doesn't make sense because it's something that happens to pretty much EVERY SHONEN MANGA, including sports manga. The author has to keep upping the stakes. It's just how it goes.
