Just finished reading the issue. So…did Bleach replace Naruto, or is it temporary? It says next month they are showing the pilot, and the month after "unveil a new naruto". But I don't know rather to interpret that as a new chapter, or some sort of coverage of Part 2 of the manga.
They've pulled Naruto from the magazine for two issues thus giving Bleach enough space for a 6 chapter debut. Once all the GNs are out they're going to start printing Naruto again starting with volume 28.
So that "unviel a new naruto" was talking about part 2. So they are just skipping all that up to part 2, huh? Lovely, now instead of plain old Naruto stuck in my magazines, I'm gonna get new sucky Naruto instead.
So, what's going to happen when Naruto is put back in? Is Bleach gonna be removed, or is it going to take Yu-Gi-Oh's place and only have 2 or so chapters a month?
No, Bleach is going to be printed in the magazine from now on so Viz can slow down the GN release.
Begining in January the line up will look something like this:
Naruto (publishing four or five chapters depending on the volume)
Bleach
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Bo^7
Hikaru no Go
YYH
One Piece
[Special preview or whathaveyou].

Four to five chapters per month? Yeesh, they really want to get through the ninja series don't they. Why not slow it down and, I don't know, add one or two more Bo-bobo chapters.

Four to five chapters a month is pretty much the same as what Japan is getting. The only problem I can see with it is… It's only for Naruto and nothing else. They should release ALL of their series at that pace.
Didn't Viz say they'd be having 4-5 chapters a month of Bleach too?
I still have yet to see the new issue in any stores.
Oh by the way, I checked up on bleach 21. The GN is unedited. Guess they only edit for the magazine now.
the GN? whats that? what should they have edited?
@Vegard:

I agree, but due to the cash cow that is Naruto and Bleach coming in as a close second they just won't gain anything from speeding up other series. Except pleasing their fans, but they don't want to do that. Heaven offend they appeal to people who don't think Naruto is God's gift to anime and manga.
This is probably a n00b question, but…What are the chances of Viz taking One Piece out of Shonen Jump? It's taking too fucking long to release these volumes, and it's seriously starting to piss me off. It's going to be 2010 at this rate by the time we reach Water 7 (and that's being generous). I came when I found out Dragon Ball was taken out of Shonen Jump. The volumes were released fast as hell!
What's the problem? I'm assuming that the demand isn't high enough…amirite?
the GN? whats that? what should they have edited?
GN = Graphic Novel. Other words, the volumes released into stores. He was commenting on Bleach being edited in Monthly Shonen Jump, while it's unedited like it should be in the GN.
And they couldn't give each manga a 4-5 chapter release…do you realize how huge the magazine would be? They'd have to limit it to like 4 manga series instead of 7.
Are you guys sure its 4-5 release? Um… do you know HOW FAST Bleach and Naruto are going to be caught up at that rate? That seems very unlikely... It would be 2 and a half years - 3 years for Naruto, which isn't "terrible." But for Bleach it would be more around the lines of a year and a half... and I doubt Bleach is going to be over in a year and a half.
It does seem though very unfair that only Naruto and Bleach get the special treatment while everyone else is forced to go through the waiting game. Sure for something like YYH, there's not really that much left…but for something like OP, which is treated more like a forgotten stepchild even with Funi's new dub, it just feels like all progress has grounded to a snail's pace while we see the other series breeze by. (then again, with recent events in Naruto...)
They really could also maybe start promoting some of their other series with one or two "chapters of interests" for people jumping in..sort of like the publishing of the full color "Ichigo's Bankai" chapter a while back or back when they did the sports manga focus. (which had something from the ES21 game against NASA, where they were at when they did it) Could help a couple series as they enter new or interesting arcs.

Who else but Moria???

The simple fact is One Piece isn't popular enough to warrant a speed up in the release. Right now I'm getting three chapters a month for who knows how long and I'm at least greatful for that. I don't buy the GNs but if the series was to be taken out of the magazine and placed into a bi-monthly GN I'd buy 'em, but right now Viz has other priorities. Get over it. It's capitalism.
I'd rather Viz just take One Piece out and do the same with with it as Shaman King by giving it a bi monthly release. It's obvious that SJ is destined to be Naruto and Bleach dominant.
As much as I'd like to see One Piece get some level of popularity in American Shonen Jump, I completely agree with what Aethos said.
I'm sure the guys at Viz have at least talked about what is going to be done with One Piece, with it being such a long series and all. It does get pretty fair treatment in the magazine since it is the only title that has 3 chapters a month as a pose to others like YuYu Hakusho, Hikaru no Go, or Bo^7 which has 2 or 1.
Maybe by this time next year, FUNimation's dub will have brought in a lot more One Piece readers enough to warrent a rapid realease (like they just did with Naruto) or a bi-monthly release.
Perhaps. One can but hope.
Meh I'm just waiting for them to turn shounen jump into the Naruto and Bleach magazine. It's definitely going to happen since Naruto and Bleach are the only two series Viz could give a damn about right now.
Stop complaining, that isn't going to happen.
Good news, I visited my local B&N and…
Naruto Volume 1: 16th Printing.
One Piece Volume 1: 9th Printing.
Bleach Volume 1: 7th Printing.
Death Note Volume 1: 7th Printing (I think).
Eyeshield 21 Volume 1: Second Printing.

How the heck can Naruto vol 1 get enough interest for 16 printings? Don't look at me. (and watch Death Note's printing run go up once the show premieres on CN)
Well I really hope Funi dub will put up the manga sales, since I'm a loyal buyer and I want to support OP here and I really want Viz to release more mangas ;/
Well Viz is good about finishing pretty much unknown series like Ranma. Despite how slowly it took them to release them all. So I doubt Viz will just up and stop with One Piece. Let's just hope for the bi monthly release. That at least would be better.

Prior to picking up DB/Z, Ranma and the Rumiko Takahashi series (well mostly that and Inu Yasha…maybe UY but they never finished it) were all Viz were known for really. So I wouldn't call it "unknown". All I want, if not a bimonthly OP release, is at least a boost to get it ahead of the anime, maybe just release to the end of Skypiea and start the monthly stuff again from the Davy Back Fight (starting the World Government Saga).

Millions of literate people outside this little One Piece group read and enjoy the series perhaps?

What the fuck are you talking about? Ranma is definitely not an unknown.
I could have sworn Naruto #1 was on it's seventeenth printing but I'm not too sure, but hey, One Piece is beating out Bleach at least.
What the fuck are you talking about? Ranma is definitely not an unknown.
Yeah because Ranma is definitely just as well known as Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Death Note, etc. in the US.
I doubt Ranma even registers on any US anime fan's radar compared to InuYasha or other actual well known series in the US. Then again maybe you just see more people talking about Ranma than I do.
Ranma was in the 80's so of course it isn't as popular in the US. The only popular series in the US from the 80's were Dragon Ball and Thundercats.

That's less about knowledge and more about eras. Ranma 1/2 is one of Viz's earlier manga projects, having started on it in the early '90s with what amounted to monthly comic books. (actually they did UY first but that didn't get the notice since Ranma was a bit more recent at the time) Prior to Inu Yasha and DB/Z, Ranma was "the" manga Viz was known for…and releasing the anime alongside it helped too. (but then again, I guess I've been at it for a long time considering that Viz's Ranma vol. 1 was the first manga I ever got)

LIES! they just look at the pictures.

Depends on the age of the anime fan in question. If you're talking about somebody who has been a fan since the '90s or even early 2003, then they most certainly know what Ranma is.
Now, if they became a fan during the ASJ era, it's less likely as Viz didn't have to rely on it so heavily, but that's only about four years ago.

sniff sniff Do I smell a rugrat?
God, I'm no fossil but I wonder if you've lost all your baby teeth if you weren't around for the Ranma boom.
Before anime was searchable on Google (fuck, before Google) Ranma was Japanese animation in the States.
edit:
Hold the goddamn phone. Your profile says you were born in 1984. How are you a year younger than me without knowing the huge force that Ranma was in the US?

My guess is about how long you've been in the US Otakudom. While the 90s was a bit more organized (with some series getting US releases and many getting VHS fansubs or nothing), today its a lot more shattered and diverse. Though now I feel old considering Ranma was a huge part of the anime landscape when I entered about '95-'97.
I'm interested in whats going to happen to OP in SJ after a few more episodes. We're about to hit Blackbeard and crew, Whitebeard, Doflamingo and Kuma, Sengoku etc. Its about to get good, and there is very good action in this arc. Funimation hopefully should do it justice, and get lots of more viewers. Even so, idc much seeing as I can just read OP online.
All One Piece volumes have the gold on the covers with that shining foil effect (forget what to call it), right? I remember hearing that was only for limited editions, but all the volumes at my local mall (1-6, and 16) have it. So I'm thinking I mis-heard.
Yeah, they all have the gold foil effect. Honestly, I would prefer the original covers, because I like the logo in different colors on each volume. I also hate how Viz changes the spines to match the volume color. Viz was probably thinking with the logo: "Pirates=treasure=gold! Let's make it shiny!"
^I KNOW It sucks. That's what I've been saying since DAY 1.
