@Preston:
Yeah, I think i did mention that I basically screwed up in the post right before yours. And you've got a fallacy in your argument though, Gecko Moria isn't a title, it's a name.
And yeah, if the original Japanese manga actually called Crocodile "Korokudaiaru", then yeah, it'd make sense that it'd be be translated that way whereas Wani would be more ambiguous. But
I never said Gecko Moria was a title. It's obviously a name.
You're completely not getting my point….
And it's Kurokodairu, son.
Do you want me to list all the names in Japanese?
サー・クロコダイル Sa- Kurokodairu > Sir Crocodile
バーソロミュー・くま Ba-soromyu- Kuma > Bertholomew Kuma
ジュラキール・ミホーク Jyurakyu-ru Miho-ku > Dracule Mihawk
ドンキホーテ・ドフラミンゴ Donkiho-te Dofuramingo > DonQuixote Doflamingo
ジンベエ Jinbee> Jinbei
ゲッコー・モリア Gekko- Moria > Gecko Moria
These are "names". Which means, they should not be trasnlated.
Obviously, if the original name was based on an foreign word, such as Crocodile, it should be spelled Crocodile.
Or if they are simply romanized version of a foreign name, such as Bertholomew, it should be spelled the correct way.
But otherwise, you do not translate them.
I have a Japanese name. If you walked up to me, and called me by some translated name, I would beat you with a cane. Into the ground. Until you get some sense.
Separate from that, they have "nicknames", such as "hawkeye" and "tyrant".
As for animal names, you got some of it wrong too.
Jibei's name IS named after an animal. The Japanese for Whale Shark is "Jinbeezame/Jinbeizame".
Every single shichibukai DOES indeed have animal name contained in their name, and not their title.
You don't want to argue with a professional Japanese translator about translation, man. :)
