Oh yeah, I did see some from the Color Walks. But one thing that comes to mind was the chapter in Baratie.
(10th Anniversary) One Piece: Treasures Scans
-
-
Those color pages were in color but not in the Tankoban volumes.
-
ok…how are most of you APers getting this book?
Cool Colorspread
You probably can get it through some Japanese bookstore, whether you live near one or not. They can probably be found easily if you live in a city with one. If not, there's also ordering it online from a place like Sasuga (a bookstore in Boston that is notable for their American distribution of Japanese books)…or you could even chance it looking on Amazon.jp.

Checked Sasuga and nothing… not sure how much 845 yen is on Amazon JP

Try a yen-to-dollar conversion program. According to current conversion, its $7.38 for the book if you get it off Amazon. (but one small situation: shipping usually costs more than the book itself..so weigh and see if its worth doing it that way)
As for Sasauga…well I haven't used them in forever so I'm not surprised they didn't have it.

There is a bookstore called Kinokuniya and in Seattle, it is located in a Japanese market called Uwajimaya. Since you live in California, you should have no problems finding one. Just Google it. Oh yeah, and it was only like $9.

I googled Uwajimaya and they gave me a link to a food store… and the kino site in japanese.
-
Really guys how did you buy it? Is there anyone from europe that bought it? Is amazon.jp the only way to get it (what a mess)? Help would be appriciated. Thanks.
NB: Uwajimaya and Sasuga doesn't seem to work.
EDIT: And I don't know if someone did actually try to buy it, but amazon.jp won't ship the book outside Japan. Are you all guys living in Japan that can buy this book so easily?

One awesome thing about that interview I just remembered is that she herself was weirded out by the artstyle.
So it's a transcending thing and not a case of "americans are dumb!!"

Actually a reoccurring theme in the 10th Treasures is Oda mentioning how he was worried about the art style. I think it comes up a few times in the SBS K section in talking with his editor.
He says that one of the things he was most concerned about is how people would react to the style and as a result of it, wasn't very confident at the start.
He's somewhat similar to Tezuka in that you can see he's clearly a Disney fan and that has influenced him in a number of ways. I mean obviously skeletons and his fascination with TNBC that's resulted in a number of names and designs, but take a look at his sea serpent that bit off Shanks' arm. It's strikingly similar to Ursula's toadies in TLM. Patty and Carne also look like something out of a Disney flick. And Wanze, holy crap.
I like that in him. He's not limited to giant eyes and bulging muscles. Yeah, he has that too, but he doesn't dwell on it. He has one of the most unique styles I've seen in a long time.
end biased praise.
-
I'd say Jyabura's wolf form looked like that wolf from the old tex avery cartoons if i remember correctly.
Edit: this guy, at least the face.
-
Yeah, Hollywood Wolf. I loved Jabura's wolf form, too.
And I do love Oda's artstyle, as well. I never made the connection between his style and Tezuka's but I guess it's there.
-
Having watched a few Astro Boy episodes, I've come to appreciate how different Tezuka's "cartoony, Disney-esque" style is compared to all the anime and manga that came after. And similarly, Oda chooses to do things his own way with his own interpretations of style instead of doing what's typical. Its this sort of art that never gets the notice compared to more stylized yet traditional art like Kubo or Murata. (though personally I love the latter's)

It's not just you :sad:I live in Finland I also need a place to buy this. And finally, after long google search I found this site: http://benippon.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=10838
but there is only used available, and it costs more than 3 times as much as new one. Why is that? Has the thing sold out in japan or what?
I dont think is worth to pay so much of a used one, when I could have a new one, but then I don't really know if it is sold out…
It's so difficult! -
Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I'd really enjoy One Piece as much if it had the "typical" anime style.
-

I agree with this post.
My first experience with OP when I bought a random issue of JUMP in NYC (back when coming in contact with a Japanese individual resulted in me being awkwardly excited) I was still on my DBZ high and that issue happened to have the first Neko Majin. It was also the issue with the famous Arlong Park triple spread. I took a glance at the style and immediately scoffed at it.
Which is up there with the "Dumbest Things I've Ever Done".
It wasn't until a few years later that I was in Japan for the first time (2001) through the Rotary Exchange and I got to talking with two volunteer tour guides about Dragon Ball. I went into a book shop and bought them the first and last volume as kind of a joke 'thank you'. And 10 minutes later they came back with the first 3 volumes of One Piece and told me I must read them.
This was taken about 5 minutes after that.
Which is kinda cool because I have a picture of the moment I became a OP fan.
-
Thank you very much BF __
-
I really enjoyed 5 and 6. Awesome seeing pages done before they go into the final process.
-
Thanks for your continuing efforts, BF.
I don't remember the bottom crying scene on page 5. I had a hard time figuring out who it was….Luffy? Looks like a goo monster. XD
EDIT: OOOOH! Those Oda messages are gonna have to be translated....or were they already? I remember reading something about the eyepatch issue which seems to be going on in the last page.
-
Patty
Yeah, the first time I saw him I immediately thought something along the lines of "He looks like one of the dudes in Alladin!"
-
Greg has already explained what the Whitebeard, Chopper, and Luffy/Eyepatch messages said.
-

Yea, that's when
! Usopp rejoins the crew.
I always thought Oda was a lil excessive on the snot/tears…I wonder how it'll look animated. :ninja:
-
I always liked how snot and tears would ooze* down from their face…
-
For those who are curious, the fourth page of Oda's messages (Luffy without the eyepatch) is basically him stressing that Luffy's name is spelt "Luffy," with an "L" and not "Ruffy," with an "R." He based Luffy's name on the meaning of the english word "luff."
I'm definitely picking this book up the next time I'm at Kino.
edit: Nevermind. I got a little ahead of myself and thought I understood it. ^_^; Thanks for clearing it up, Greg.
-
Regarding Oda's Messages, the Vivi one sucks. It was released with the Movie Box which also sucks. Pretty much him saying he was surprised they decided to turn it into a film but then after turning it over a few times in his mind thought it would be excellent for new fans and good for old fans since it was such a popular arc. Then he basically thanks everyone involved.
Yeah.
I think the other one I didn't touch was the 4th one you see there. That is the one included with the Pop-Up Artbook which….although it's really nifty....ain't worth 40 bucks to me. Which sucks since it's the only one I'm missing -_-. In short, the fact that Luff is a maritime term and that being the name of his main character is Luffy is.....SOMETHING HE DIDN'T INTEND WHATSOEVER.
The only one missing from that series is the one from the 10th Anniv. edition of JUMP where he stereotypically thanks everybody etc. etc.
Now Battle, hold the fuckin' phone! Where the shit is that personality article from???

That's not what he's saying at all.
-
Thank God (though I'm an atheist). I'd hated it if Luffy's name came from there. I mean luff has nothing to do with Luffy. It would be so hurtful to us One Piece fans like us found out that the name of the main character was a randomly chosen maritime term that had nothing to do with him. In that case, where does the idea of his name come from?!?
-
Since when can't you say "Thank God" or anything else with "God" if you're an atheist? I'm an atheist and I use the bloody word a lot.
-

Actually Oda mentions that not only is it a good source, it's the best name origin for a young boy that heads out to sea for adventure. He just had no idea about that and it's purely a coincidence.
-
So where did the name Luffy really come from O_O And Buuhan, sue me for being religiously accurate (whatever that means)
-
Oda-sensei stated in the first Color Walk that back when he created the prototype for Luffy's character, he just kinda randomly invented the name. I believe the exact phrasing was "I just named him Luffy for some reason." Basically he thought it sounded kewl and fit the character. Not much deeper thought onhis part than that. Also, Luffy dresses exactly like most artist rendering of Huck Finn, who's personality resembles Luffy alot, but I'm pretty sure that's a conincidence too…OR IS IT?!!
And I do love Oda's artstyle, as well. I never made the connection between his style and Tezuka's but I guess it's there.
Well he and Takei-sensei studied together and that guys a pretty avid Tezuka fan, so it seemed obvious to me after reading a few interviews. Also they were both pioneering this kind of cartoonish, sorta looks america, sorta looks japanese style, art style back when most manga characters still looked like Cubie DOlls. Not to mention the simplism of the anatomies and Hiroyuki Takei's style looks like an updated Urban, Astroboy/Testuwon Atom. I saw Oda-sensi's earlier stuff and it resembled his current style but still looked too generic and similar to Toriyama's stuff imho.
I think he found the canon stlye for OP after his experience working with Takei-sensei on Kenshin for so long. It sucks because I actually think in the beginning Shaman King's style was more refined and cooler looking than OP's but Takei can't write that well. So he never took off with any of his series. Atleast not to a mainstream level like Oda-sensei.
-
That's so cool That would totally fit Luffy. Out of nowhere without a train of thought XD i.e. random and crazy. I like the way his name came up a lot. Awesome Oda-Sensei^^ Knew you wouldn't disappoint us One Piece fans.
-
Sis is finally back from Seattle and I finally got my Treasures book! A few comments:
-I didn't really expect a 3-D section, but some of the scenes they used are neat, including "The Sea King breeding ground" from when they enter Reverse Mountain, the 600 million Belli Jackpot, and the Sunny revelation.
-The timeline for OP also acknowledges Oda's one-shots prior to OP's serialization. Really didn't know "Wanted" was part of the Tezuka Awards (a special thing for up-and-coming mangaka) as early as '92 and the first "Romance Dawn" (the one with Shanks, not the one with grandpa) was in the Summer Akamaru Jump of '96. (the one that comes out around Bon)
-Still a bit shocked Alvida won for sexiest…but hey, she would probably club everyone if she didn't.
-There's a section on real pirates, including several of the originals drawn by Oda (Grace Omari, Blackbeard, Roberts, the "Redbeard Barbarosa Brothers" and even Alvida...and heck, the real Alvida is probably cuter than Oda's)
-I like some of the stuff on the ship schematics, and it even includes Thriller Bark!
-They have a section where they interview Oda's assistants, but somehow when Eijiri (the author of P2) was mentioned as an Oda assistant, he never took part in that interview. And I'm sort of happy someone liked that cute milkmaid from the Ace cover-arc.
-Didn't expect a whole section on Sanji teaching dining manners
-There's a "Choose Your Own Adventure" for Enies Lobby, going from Sanji entering the Sea Train to Luffy vs. Lucchi.
-I need to get my hands on the shirt with all the Pirate emblems...it's just so cool.
-Seeing the fan art in person gave me new appreciation for some of them and finally allowed me to see a few new ones. I love Mikio Itoh's version of Robin as well as Eijiri's (who's looks the most like the Oda style), Usuta's is weird, Fukushima's is hilarious (Usopp tank :p) and I even appreciate Kishimoto's a bit more. Oh, and Watsuki's is as kick-butt as everyone said it was. -

It's so difficult! :blink:Amazon.jp has it at normal price. The problem is that it is from an third seller, so it won't send it over to euro… sigh...
I think I'll buy it from ebay, it's really the only one... -
Anyone tried buying from here? http://www.s-book.com/plsql/com2_magcode?sha=4&sho=2993809107&type=s&keitai=80
Got the link from the official j-onepiece site, but unfortunately it's out of stock at the moment. -
Has anyone in the UK had any luck in getting this yet?
I emailed http://www.otaku.co.uk and asked if they would order 10th treasures and provided the ISBN.
"I have asked my supplier in Japan and they are checking with the
distributor. I will let you know if we can get it."I received this reply on the 17th so I doubt I will get it from them.
Has anyone tried the Japan centre in central London?
I’ve seen a few weekly jumps in there. -

I also tried Forbidden Planet, but they weren't interested in stocking it. ( And if they did they'd probably mark it up 100%)

His signature looks like "Eiichiro Cola".
It's funny how he spells One Piece with an X through the O.

Oh, uh.. no idea, obviously not Treasures.
I'm thinking maybe the pop-up Adventure book?
EDIT: Hold the fuckin' phone! AGAIN!!! Minoru Suzuki is a One Piece fan!? How'd I miss that one?
