Man, that is some deep shit…
This makes me think about myself too, and how a mangaka can say things for everyone...
After all, i'm a brazilian guy in an american forum to discuss about a japanese manga...

This weekend is the soonest I will have the time to do any more.
Thnx for translating Greg. Yeha, I got choked up reading that. I always wanted to read or see some interviews where Oda-sensei spoke "less jokingly" than he does in the Jump interviews.
I like how he clarified a few things ppl have been debating about like Usopp being the "Human" of the group and such, too. Oda-sensei you glorious bastard! Don't disapoint on the final arc! I will be reading regardless of how old I am when this ends! T___T
Okay, here's the main idea of Oda's message from the insert. It's the last of the messages and EASILY ends on the most exciting and mysterious note.
He calls it: POLICY SUPLEX HOLD!
Oda says this will be the last of the 'inside stories' in this series, obviously since the 10th Anniversary releases are essentially done now. This time he's not gonna give an 'inside story', rather his 'inside policy'.
This is really cool and something I didn't realize until now.
'So what's a pirate?', he asks. He says that when you ask someone to draw a pirate you'll get a dingy guy with a mustache, beard, hat and…..oh yeah.......the requisite eye-patch.
He draws a picture of a guy with an eye-patch and calls him a pirate. He draws the same picture WITHOUT the eye-patch and ponders, "Is he just some old dude?" He believes there's this image that 'Eye-patch = Pirate" just as much as "Afro = Champion".
Have you realized it yet?
! There hasn't been a pirate he's drawn in all of canon OP with an eye-patch.
That's his 'inside policy'.
" 'The crap!!?? It's not like all freakin' pirates wear eye-patches! No way! You can draw 'em without resorting to that!', is kinda how I feel about it.", he says. By doing this, he says he didn't limit himself to a stereotype and started with a simple story about a adventure with a young boy at sea. If we all have an image of what pirates are supposedly to be like in our heads, Oda thought he'd simply draw how a boy gets to that point.
And here's the bait.
He says he's got nothing against eye-patches though. In fact….in the end of the giant tale that is One Piece....there will be a certain 'eye-patched pirate' that will appear. Just talking about it makes him excited to draw it.
:-D
Man that's got me kind of pumped for what else is gonna happen. Favorite line is "Afro=Champion"
That's an awesome snippet, Greg. I really want to see this pirate as well.
An eye-patched pirate at the end of OP? I'm dying to know if it's based of another real life pirate or an original? I'm putting money on Captain Kidd or Redbeard (although that may be redundant). I'd love to see what Oda could do with them.
Gol D. Roger's eyes have never been shown have they?
And here's the bait.

:-D
shanks or luffy will lose a eye by the end of the series !!!! quote me on that
but yeah I never noticed that kinda ….freaky
Gah I got a tingle to see that there is gonna be a pirate with a Eyepatch at the end of OP haha cant wait.
Thank's Greg for the translation :3
Greg, thank you so much for sharing that interview with everyone. I absolutely loved it, and it meant something to me, because I'm going to be a mangaka too. What I read in there helped me to understand some tips on drawing manga and depicting different characters, and not using a stereotype one, arigatou Greg!!
Greg again reminds me why I once frequently read Ultimate DBZ. Once again thanks for the goodies.
Greg, thanks for the summary and translation! Excellent, and heart-felt. Both their words and yours. And thanks to EGX for the cleaned-up scans. (Looking forward to your Watsuki version especially, if/when.) And thanks to everyone else who scanned, translated, cleaned, etc to bring us this special issue.
Regarding Greg's spoiler:
! There hasn't been a pirate he's drawn in all of canon OP with an eye-patch.
My response:
! Aw, but that's not entirely true, is it? Because even though he's never drawn a crew-member with an actual eye-patch, he has drawn one with something else covering one eye for a long time now… It may not be an eye-patch literally, but it probably serves the same function as an eye patch.
! "One of the great mysteries of One Piece", Oda said, if I'm remembering correctly, from an early SBS...
! Of course I'm referring to Sanji.
Sanji has never shown us his left eye
! He may not even have one!
Bringing Sanji into this was a cheap move!
Anyways, for that eye-patch thing. The first thing that came to my mind instantly was Shanks. I guess cause of his scar.
In fact….in the end of the giant tale that is One Piece....there will be a certain 'eye-patched pirate' that will appear.
:-D
I think I've seen Luffy with an eye-patch on back cover of "OP Treasures" scans. o.o
This is AWESOME! Thanks for everyone providing the scans and colorations, and thanks Greg for those translations, I found that Tanaka/Oda very enlightening, and I love the both of them all the more.
About that Kino store, they ship to California over the phone, yes? And they have this book? Just want to make sure.
We need an eyepatch pirate in my opinion. On a Mythbusters episode, they showed that an eyepatch helps ALOT when suddenly moving or fighting in the dark by shifting the patch to cover the side that's not adapted to the dark.
Gawd, this interview filled me with joy, and excitement! An eyepatched pirate, at the end!? xDDD
And those comments on Usopp really made my day.
wow thankyou very much for the interview Greg. I must say it's really the most serious interview Oda's ever made. soo deep….... hhahaha but then I've been reasured that I can (and I will) read OP till I'm old XD and maybe someday, I could make a discussion over it with my children.
and an eye-patched pirates?? really looking forward to see that ^_^
That is just so neat! The fact that Oda avoided "the eyepatch" except for "that pirate" (who knows who that is but it could be massive when he/she/it is revealed) means that this pirate is bound to be immense. Definately takes various pirate cliches into account. (then again we already got out "pegleg" pirate with Zeff)
"That pirate"? Schweeeeet!! Oda rocks my fucking socks off.
Bringing Sanji into this was a cheap move!
! Perhaps you misunderstood my tone?
! My comment wasn't meant to be accusatory or ironic.
It was actually meant to be the opposite : I think Oda's a genius for reinventing the old "one eyed pirate" stereotype in such a fresh and unexpected way.
! I can't wait for the back-story when we finally find out what happened to Sanji's eye. I'm guessing we won't get it until he's found All Blue though. Assuming All Blue exists … (I hope for his sake that it does)
Erm there's nothing wrong with Sanji's eye. We just never see it. Or were you expecting to find a Sharingan? Anyway that interview was much better than that bs shonen jump interview.
Yeah, it's just a hair style and character design, so Oda never cares to blow the hair up in the wind or something.
And has anyone noticed that no one in One Piece has ever commented on Sanji's hair covering his eye (at least…I think so) yet we do? XD
Oh man, this came out while I was on vacation D:
I need this book like now, I hope Kino still has it.
OH thank you Greg for posting the interview! ;_____;
Seriously, there will never be anyone else who can do Luffy like Tanaka, when she speaks, she IS Luffy, and now I know why.

Not true! May I refer you to the volume 20 SBS:
D: Oda-chan!! Today is the day for you to answer this!! What about Sanji's left eye?!
O: There it is… again. I get a lot of these. So many, in fact, that I usually just ignored them... all right. I will finally answer one of One Piece's 7 great mysteries, "Sanji's Left Eye"!! Come on out, Sanji!!
S: Hey. You called? What? You want me to show you my left eye?! THAT'S what you called me for? Honestly... fine, fine. You wanna see it? There you go, take a good look. See?
O: WHOAAAAA!!! FOR REAL?!! WOW...!!THE SBS IS OVER!! SEE YOU NEXT TIME!!
Only Oda knows what devastation he saw! :P

The one in Little Tokyo hasnt gotten there's yet you can go and reserve a copy I did :3 I t should be there for Nisei week.
Awesome interview.
About the eye-patched pirate, I think it might be the final villian of One Piece.
Anyway, thanks for the translation Greg!
@.@ Information overload …!
Thanks for the translation, Greg! Hmm ... only 7.50? I'm so heading up to Seattle this week then.
Haha, let the speculation explode.
but yea, really awesome interview. Oda is a really cool dude.
Greg, or anyone who has the book and can translate…
I was wondering if you could do a word for word translation of the part when Oda-senei and Tanaka-san talk about what makes a great character? I think it'd be really interesting to hear what qualities they feel are important in character design/creation. Thanks!
Thanks for the summary Greg!
While the whole thing was great, the part that really got me though was that Oda planned for the 'Enel face' since the character's inception, just to see the reader's response.
Thanks for that translation!!!
My first impression of OP was very similar to Luffy's VA.
I never found the artstyle weird. When I first had my exposure to One Piece, it was in Shonen Jump in 2003 or something (I still have the issues) and I saw a cosplayer of Luffy and I know I've seen the character before in Jump.
I found the character really odd, a guy wearing a red vest, straw hat, and blue shorts. I instantly thought of Gilligan's Island or something and "What the hell is this?" and I just changed the page.
So yeah. XD

^I camera-scanned the picture of Oda's desk! :3
My memory's hazy, but I remember some sort of American anime magazine that I flipped through and I saw pictures of the first five Straw Hats and all the major East Blue villains in it. I thought that were all really bizarre and I didn't believe that they were supposed to be pirates. Then, after the 4Kids dub started, I saw a picture of Buggy in a commercial, remembered the magazine, then started watching.
Thanks BF
I hope someone, at least at jojohot, scan the book for the ones like me, who don't have the money to buy it…
I guess that'll be a preview for the Franky Log.
He looks awesome at any rate.

i went to kino today, cosmic, and there's still a lot of copies of it.
Went to the Seattle Kinokuniya yesterday and found the magazine for only $7.70. I took a picture of all the goodies it came with which you can view here.
And later scanned the comic short at the end since I loved the idea it was pretty much an OP version of Gokusen.
sry
anyone with translation of this
I seriously need to get this.
I usually get all my Japanese One Piece books and manga from yesasia but they don’t have the 10 treasures, not even under “ONE PIECE” or “wan pi su” like they usually do.
Does anyone know where I can get this online or otherwise? (I live in London, England)
Also, what’s the size of the book in comparisons to say the manga or the color walks?

Cool, wonder if he was pulling ideas from "Young Frankenstein"…? look over to the right side...

That's really beautiful! That is a sacred place!!!
I seriously need to get this.

I live in Cali, but Nowhere near a Japanese Book store and I really want to find this book for reading.
can someone do an high quality scan of the nami/robin color spread?
I wonder what Kiavik wants the high quality scan for:getlost:lol XD just kidding. And the Oda-sensei desk pic was awesome!!! Now I see where he gets his creativity from. The place literally inspired my creative side with all its chaotic wackiness. I literally feel like making a strawberry pie with cream and cheese! But i won't because I don't know how to make it, don't have the ingredients to make it and am too lazy.
I just bought the book at Kino, yay!
I want to put up the poster, but it's got Franky on it and my BF hasn't gotten to Water 7 yet >.<
^ Which Kino ya went to Cosmic? haha I also got my copy of it today :3
I love the 3D effect thing wish they added more pages of that.
and I wounder how the gonna write in Robin and Franky in the new movie haha.
Received my copy today. Lots of really cool stuff!! Gonna probably frame that poster, it's really bitchin'.
Also worth noting: Got a pretty neat little section on how much things cost in the OP world. Most are pretty generic stuff, but what I found most interesting was the value of a DF (Kaku's is shown) is about 1 million belli. I forget if that's ever mentioned in the manga, but I thought it was cool.
