Not to offend anyone, this isn't really a big deal with me, but does it seem like while other manga's drawings get better and better, One Piece's kinda get worse? I still love this manga to death, but i was just wondering what some people's opinions are…I mean the drawings are still pretty good, but i kinda liked the old drawings better...

That's…..the first time I've heard that. I feel it's gotten much better over the years.
-
Same here. Compare the blah art from volume one to the comparaitvely stunning art in Water 7.
-
oh yeah, but i don't mean as far back as the beginning, those drawings ar'ent as good, somewhere near the middle is where i liked it…maybe from middle of Arabasta to end of SkyPiea....i feel as though i'm about to be yelled at...it's just some of the drawings i see make me feel kinda wierd...maybe i should just forget this topic...hm..
-
We aren't yelling at you. If you think that way, that's allright.

huh???? Worse? I've only seen it get better and better, am I alone here in seeing how the characters not only look older but have more of the aura that Oda originally intended for them to carry and the fans also helped to create along the way? Look at Zoro tied to the post in Morgan's base and look at Zoro lying on the ground next to Sanji during Groggy Ring. I don't know how any person could say that's 'worse'.

The main cast DOES kind of look weird right now, but theres no question that Oda's art abilities are WAY better than the Alabasta/Skypiea art.
You have to look to the backgrounds and other details.
-
Well remember, backgrounds and other details are things Oda doesn't even waste time with many times. That's what his bitches I mean assistants are for.

**Well, that's mostly what i was looking at, the cast looks just a tad funny right now, or maybe it's just choppers crazy baby face…?....hm.....this is good, getting some feedback....yay.

The style has definitely become more complex since the beginning.
We haven't had any AMAZING panels in a while - you know the ones that just put you into shock. -
Well I guess if you read some of the East Blue chapters then skip to now it would be a shock but I personally think the art has gotten way better. The artwork to me seems to have gotten sharper over the years and whether that is a good thing or a bad thing can certainly be debated. It does however remind me of Dragonball in which all the main characters seemed to become more defined as the years went on. But then maybe that is just me. I for one look at the One Piece artwork of today and feel that it is leaps and bounds superior to what Oda started with though I'm sure not everyone shares the same feeling as everyone has their own tastes.
-
I don't see how worst the Water 7 art can be
-
Yea. It definately has gotten better and better.
-
I agree with you, Hanatarou. I think the faces have gotten worse since Alabasta and Skypiea. Like in the Davy Back Fight look at Nami's nose.
-
whistles That's a change. Artwork get worse?
I personally think that, while the character's faces may have changed a little, on the whole the artwork has gotten fantastic. And it's not just the background, Oda's use of shading, texture, and detail have all improved drastically. And I dunno, I like the faces in the Water Seven arc. They seem to fit the very dark mood.
It's natural for all artists' artwork to improve as they go along. Especially if they get a huge hit early in their career. Look at Yugioh's artwork. THAT is change and improvement. I used to think the characters in Naruto looked sloppily drawn, but now they all are much much better and defined.
I think the last AMAZING panel that Oda had was in Skypeia and the whole Sanji "I was looking for a light for my cigarette!" shot. F-ing amazing. Although the close-up of Usopp in chapter 328 was pretty damn good too. You really felt the emotion.
-
I don't think you can define the amazingness of a panel or page by the level of quality in the artwork. Luffy's ''Heavy…!'' was amazing, but not because he was doing an awesome pose with lots of detailed art or anything.
And yes, I agree on the artwork having improved by miles. I sort of do see where you're coming from, though, but only in one case... Usopp's face is getting a lot more square-like and it's bugging me.

I don't wanna imply its gotten worse…just a little wierd, i think i shall go back and look carefully at the artwork from now on, i'm sure his artistic skills have greatly improved...sigh...just love how mangas get better and better....

The only thing I really have a beef with is Nami's hair. It's too… choppy and thin and stringy now. I liked it better earlier on when the ends still flipped out and her hair part wasn't so far up, but that's pretty much the only thing I don't like currently compared to the old. I don't even mind the boob thing (since I think that's more of Oda drawing the waist smaller, but I dunno).
To each their own, I guess. shrug

all manga changes over time and 99.99999% it's for the better.
cough Dragon Ball cough

**I think the battles in Dragon Ball improved a great deal when the art changed.
-
i noticed that the drawing of nami kinda changed… she doesn't look as cute as she used too. but robin's drawing has definitely gotten better. i get more of the "mature woman" aura from the robin now than from the robin in alabasta or skypiea.
notice also, that oda now use lots of screen tone, as well as detailed line shadings. the line shading is more of an acquired taste... to some it might be bothersome to have that many lines going on, but to others it's a daring style, because you have to know the PRECISE amount of line you can have to make it perfect. too much and it screws things up, too little and it also screws things up.
in terms of style, i think oda's definitely getting better. but yeah, i do notice that nami in alabasta is rather different than nami in water7
-
hmmm…i wonder if Oda's having his characters age? he could use that as an excuse for any unwanted changes of fans...after all they've been through, they have to at least be 1 or 2 years older....or maybe they won't like other mangas....
-

I totally agree. DB only got better with age. Even though my personal favorite style is right after Gohan steps into the story.
-
I think that the art in Arabasta was awsome compared to the beginning. But from Skypiea on, it didn't get worse but it felt more like a 'shift'. Like a change in style… still looks good though. Nami's nose and Usopp's hair drive me crazy though. xD
-
Oda has started to use a lot of more complex view angles lately and Chopper's turning into more cuter and cuter :P. I think over years he's biggest improvement has been in the pacing though but I love the art in the very first volumes the most. While the current art is technically better and Oda has probably hired like a billion assistants to work with him still nothing beats the originality of the art of the beginning. Anyway, it's always interesting to follow the progress of comic artists, for better of worse.
-
I am buying the manga in Spanish, but by now they only published the first 10 volumes (Arlong fight). When I read them and then read the chapter of the week I think that there is a strange thing about Nami.
It seems that Nami has growth. The way that Oda draws her on Water 7 arc she seems older, more mature. Or is it only my imagination? What do you think?Kinai.
-
Personally I love how Nami is drawn now, she looks older than she did at the beginning. Actually, they all do. o.O Everyone seems to have slightly more angular faces…which is alright, cause it does look pretty good. My only issue is Sanji seems to have gained this huge CHIN from nowhere, but that's just me.
-
If you're imagining it then I'm imagining it too. Yeah, she does seem alot older.
-
It's the boobs.
-
Of all of his characters, she's probably changed the most. When she first appeared, she looked like a 13 year old.
-
I guess this is what you call "character development" or just improvment in art…
-
Yeah, all the characters look older now.
Oda's style has become more complex and as a result, the characters all look older.
Also, they've been through a whole lot, which tends to have the effect of making them mature faster. -
I always thought that expression meant mentally.
-
Scans can be deceptive.
For instance… Naruto on actual paper looks less impressive then in scans, the same goes for Alabasta.
But the Arlong arc looks alot better in reality then when its fuzzed on your screen.
As far as style goes in OP, I like the art best in the Drum arc, namely Vol.17
-
Someone wrote into SBS about her bust growth and Oda said it's because she's still maturing and can get bigger (although, I think it'll look a little silly if they got bigger then they are now).
Other than that, it's probably drawing style. I think he was still in his early twenties when he started this, so his style was still developing. -

Seem's he wants to glorify his wife's character.

I don't think that Make her breasts too big is a way to glorify his wife's character.
Kinai.
-
I think Nami has grown in about every way a character can grow. She's mentally, emotionally, and physically changed. And by physically, I am not just talking the breasts - she does look older in the face.
And if her boobs are too big, I'd hate to think what Robin's are. ^_^
-
That's normal, over the years the person's drawing skills slowly changes. Nami looks sexier, Luffy looks mature and Zoro looks..well he looks almost looks to same. The more Oda draws, the more his art improves.

hm, this should just go to that same thread where people have been discussion oda's progress in artwork.
-
Wow, I'm shocked. Lately I've been thinking about how much artwork has gotten so much more detailed and complex. I like how it looks now so much better than from when it first started. As someone pointed out, Oda's using a lot more interesting angles. I just fell in love with the panel of Sanji on page 17 of chapter 360. It's gorgeous. And I like how Usopp's face is more square for some reason…

that's very true. he looks a lot better that way. and the way oda draws his hair now looks a lot better than when we first saw him in syrupp village. it's gotten longer too.
-
Well, they don't have a barber on the ship. Who's trimming each other's hair? ;) I think it would be cool if Usopp put his hair in dreads like Yassop :D BTW, how much time has passed since the story first started, anyway?
-
woah, is my post an official thing now?….uh....
-
I have to say, I don't think Oda's art has been better than it is now. I love where he's going stylistically and he's becoming more ambitious with angles and detailing. I think his work is absolutley gorgeous now. And there was a panel at the end of one of the Water 7 chapters that I thought was stnning and I really wish I could find a better scan of it than I've been able to, but it's the one where everyone's rushing into the room with the CP9 agents in it and Luffy's coming through the wall. I LOVED that panel when I saw it. The composition is amazing, the detail, the expression, the movement, the linework– it was really impressive. Can't remember the chapter number, though.
And I like the some of the characters seem more mature, Sanji and Nami particularly seem to have shed their "baby fat". I love how everyone looks right now, I think it suits them perfectly.

You know, outside of panel arrangement and pacing there are three characters that I think show a definate change in style. Nami, Ussop, and Luffy. I mean even by the time the anime adapted One Piece I noticed that they seemed to take the designs from whatever was the current point of the manga during that time. In the manga Ussop in the early chapters was…uuuuugly. Nami did look more childish and for some reason Oda does seem to be facsinated with making her boobs bigger in the later arcs. Luffy also looks different, I just haven't pinpointed how.
One thing I wanted to point out that Oda's style change seems to be more gradual and less extreme.
For example: I think the artwork in series like Ranma 1/2, Yu-gi-oh, Oh My Goddess, Urusei Yatsura go through extreme day and night changes to the point where you question if the early chapters were even done by the same artist (It was really weird with Yu-gi-oh because the first chapters looked nothing like all the later art they used to promote the series). But Oda's style has always been evident throughout the series. When I look at some of the American Shonen Jump chapters and then look at some of the later chapters online while I do notice a maturity in the art it still looks like Oda drew it.

Personally, I love the changes in charater designs. I think they really show a growth in maturity. I have no problem with the way Oda is going art-wise. It's beautiful.
-
One thing i don't really like that he's starting doing….that little upper lip line....i don't know why, i can't stand it though...though its for the girls to accentuate their lips i guess...still...
