What can I say?
It's definitely Spider Man 3. I didn't like the other two films and I didn't like this one either. In the same vein, if you think the other two are "the best comic book films ever made" then you will surely place this in your number one spot.
That's not to mean I thought it was a total waste because what action sequences there are, are done quite well, especially a chase through an alley which was awesome. Also, almost anything done with Sandman is awesome, the effects are killer! Particularly where we see him first gain control of his abilities.
As for Venom? I'm not gonna lie. I was let down. Granted most of what I know of Venom is from Maximum Carnage and the animated series so I dunno what is or isn't canon and it doesn't matter because that Venom I knew was the shit. But this Venom is just? I dunno folks. First of all, Topher works as Brock. In fact, he's probably the most believable character actor in the bunch as a main character. But Venom itself? First of all, the 'We' is gone. I dunno if that was added for the cartoon but it was a little touch that added so much. Plus despite the fact that Venom has a monstrous roar, Brock's voice as Venom is virtually unchanged. This was probably the 2nd biggest dissapointment for me regarding the villain. The biggest? He and Spider Man don't have a knock-down drag-out battle like they should. He and Spidey have an aerial battle falling 40+ stories to the ground but it goes by far too quickly and a scene used earlier in the film during a rescue that was BREATHTAKING should have been employed here as it would have been far more dramatic to see them smashing through rubble in mid-air trying to kill each other. Another fanboy complaint would be….Venom isn't named in the film. Not at all. He never states his name, nor what advantages the symbiote gives him over Spider Man. They BRIEFLY hint that his Spider Sense doesn't work, but that's about it. Considering the secrecy they held him in and how they want SM to expand beyond fans and hit the general public, I wouldn't be surprised if most viewers call him, the 'black monster thingy'. I dunno, besides my complaints, where Venom does show up, is cool. But...it's not enough. Yes, I'm a total Venom fanboy and technically one could argue nothing could ever be enough for a fanboy, but I can honestly separate myself from the situation and say something is lacking.
As for why I didn't like the film? Raimi's melodrama works on the small screen. On the big screen where he wants us to take his story seriously, I find the rollercoaster of emotions his characters go through nothing short of laugh-out-loud amatueristic. The angst is OFF THE CHARTS. And I'm not just talking about when the black suit is involved. Way before that. Characters who OBVIOUSLY are madly in love suddenly bicker and squabble over SERIOUSLY stupid shit.
MJ: "I got a shitty review from a critic."
PP: "Don't worry, you're amazing. Just get back up on that horse and you can do it!"
MJ: "This isn't about YOU!!!!"
What the fuck???? He's being tender and kind and she's not exactly a bitch so what the fuck is with the sudden attitude? At the expensive of believable characters, their emotions are seriously fucked with to propel the story. I felt this to be true in both 1 and 2. If you ate that up, then you will no doubt sacrifice a lamb at the alter of Spider Man 3. But it didn't/doesn't work for me.
Okay, but one more thing.
There is a moment in the film.
So amazing.
So fantastically amazing.
One might even be tempted to call it 'perfect'.
I'll just say, when Peter enters a French restaurant, get ready for the greatest thing ever in all eternity times infinity.
