Like, I realize that the average time a person reads comics is about 5 years, (or at least it used to be... I imagine nowadays its mostly old fans rather than new ones jumping in, given modern price points and only being in specialty stores) so it used to be perfectly fine to reset status quos and reuse stories and villains every few years... because almost no one in the audience would know.
But come on, the Phoenix Saga was before I was even born,,, WHY is that the one well that has to keep going back to?
It's all because later editorial wimped out and retconned the slate clean to bring Jean back instead of just letting her stay dead.
It's kind of like how it's just REQUIRED for a Teen Titans group to have a traitor in the group after Terra. Every new long running version of the group without fail has one of them working for some villain or another and it's just... why are you writing stories if all you want to do is to regurgitate what you already saw from the same story? If you're going to borrow things you liked at least borrow from a wholly different title so there's at least a chance it'll be new this group.
Jean-as-Phoenix sounds liek they're just doing the Silver Surfer thing with her though. And that's never... gone great.
