According to a picture in the Bo-bobo thread, it seems that it will now be running monthly in the magazine. Whether this will effect how many chapters One Piece gets each month depends, I guess. Volume 16 is still coming out on the standard three-month schedule after 15 takes four months, so maybe they'll take Yu-Gi-Oh! out or something…
New Official Viz Manga Discussion

They're going to add Bobobo to ASJ?! EXCELLENT! That's one of the few series I really want read. Can't wait to see it. I also believe Yu-Gi-Oh is the series most likely to be pulled. From what I understand the final arc is about seven volumes long, and last time I checked they've published five of them so I doubt there's that much left for them to publish.
-
what about shaman king? How is it still in US SJ?
-
While the series has ended in Japan, Viz is about 150 - 200 chapters behind so it will be a while before they even come close to finishing the series. And bare in mind Shaman King lasted for about 6/7 years.
Truth be told, I wish they'd drop it from ASJ and release it as a bimonthly series. The anime only faithfully adapts the first nine volumes then borrows from the rest but isn't as faithful. Now that we're past the volume 9 mark, I REALLY want to see what happens next and hate how they seem to publish as few chapters as possible.
-
Now the chapters are being listed as 'Drum Island 1' and 'Drum Island 2' for those of you that's don't know.
-
@ Caracal. Here's a link of SK manga up to volume 23.
http://groups.msn.com/ShamanKingchronicles/_whatsnew.msnw
And also http://mankin-trad.net/main.php has up to volume 27 with new scans released about once a week. -

Now I regret stopping my SJ subscription. Bobobo is awesome.

What exactly does this mean? The new SJ isn't out yet. Or is it? I doubt it…
-
People who subscribe get it a few weeks early.
And they're giving each arc their own numbering system. Naruto is currently being listed under "Orochimaru's Invasion #X." It really doesn't matter, but I prefer the original way.
-
Well Naruto volume 13 had a number of "Orochimaru Invasion" chapters in it and they used the original number system. And I also prefer the old way.
-
Probably Shaman King is the only series currently in the magazine that could get away with a bi-monthly release yet. (its potential is pretty much done in the US and they're up to the "non-anime" material) But unfortunately, they're going to do a massive jump for Naruto instead of for the other series. (basically, they're releasing the twelve volumes after the end of the Invasion the four months after that…making me think they want to start the Shippuden arc sooner) Personally wish One Piece would get that sort of jump (though I don't know if would be for Alabasta or even up to Skypiea, mostly since starting from the Davy Back Fight would be a great short arc so they could segway into Water 7...while the anime by then will mostly have covered the other stuff.
-
Where did you hear about this?
Personally I wish they'd do a simular jump for all their series. Many fans are annoyed at how far behind Viz is with Naruto and One Piece and (prior to this news) seem to show no interest in trying to catch up as soon as possible.
-
Well Naruto is their Golden Boy so I can see them doing anything to appease fans. It still seems pretty crazy that they might actually be trying to jump so far so fast.
As for One Piece well it does OK in it's own right as it is the fourth best selling Jump title, although it ranks lower then Inuyasha apparently, so I hope they actually have some sort of plan for it once the new dub starts which will be much farther into the story then they currently are. Seriously the way I calculated it they won't reach Skypedia until sometime in 2010.
-

Uh, you posted that Naruto thing on April Fool's Day, and I've read interviews with Viz higher-ups that said after Kenshin they wouldn't do any other monthly releases (CERTAINLY not three per month like the website said). No matter how popular Naruto is, releasing everything at once would be a really poor business strategy.
-
Uh, Sorry, but I still don't really understand the arc numbering system. What is it? And what's the point of it anyways?? Does it mean they're replacing the chapter titles with (Drum Island #1, Drum Island #2)??

Now, I haven't seen this but I'm just guessing.
That instead of 'Chapter 92' or something like that
Its listed on the Title page as "Drum Arc 1" and so on..
I don't think thats the best idea…I hope it switches back when they get collected in the GNs -

Same here, I find that really annoying.
The Only Possible Reason behind them doing this would be because its Choppers introduction, if someone wasn't really reading One Piece and decided they wanted to pick it up again with the drum arc, they'd know right off the bat where to start off. I guess they are doing it w/ Naruto too (I wouldn't know I only read Jump the first year or so) If I remember right they split Yugioh into just 'Yugioh' and 'Yugioh:Duelst' to help people figure out where the stories that had been adapted to the english anime began.

Oh man, I am going to be super pissed if they don't change that when the graphic novel comes out. And since they didn't fix the typo of 300 mil to 30 mil I'm really worried.
-
Has this "Drum Island 1" thing even been confirmed? Somebody take a picture with their phone or something.
-
Like I mentioned before, Naruto volume 13 has a number of "Orochimaru Invasion" chapters in it and they were given their "number back" in the graphic novel. Still, as annoying as it would be if they chose to keep "Drum 1" etc. in the graphic novel, in all honesty I think it's a minor change and I think there are worse things to do.

Oh, good. Well then yes, hopefully they'll do the same with One Piece. Although I still understand why they would do that even if it is just for the SJ magazine. Seems kinda retarded.
-
I'm a bit late with this, but I really hope they don't drop Yu-Gi-Oh! until its done. It IS really close to being finished, and I don't want to buy the graphic novels at the moment(currently on a 2 year subscription). Though I'd MUCH rather they insert more than once chapter a month. That's starting to piss me off.
In reality, I don't want them to drop anything, but if they did.. Yu Yu Hakusho. They had the perfect chance to with the end of the Toguro arc, but now they seem to be continuing on. Oh well.

So true, Caracal. So true.
-
I think it runs the risk of interfering with communication.
If I say "430", every manga reader knows exactly what I'm speaking of. If I say "Enies Lobby 45" (or whatever), half the fans are going to have to go and look and say "hmm… EL starts at 3xx, add 45..."
-
Why don't the english versions have 2 or 3 colored page each volume? The Japanese ones do… right?? It's easy to tell which ones were colored too, because they are "extra shaded".
-
No they don't. Color spreads aren't colored in the tankos. I have them so I would know.
-
Sorry I'm so late.
Basically, the two chapters were called 'Drum Island #1: See?!' etc.
YYH get's the same treatment.
Next month, expect FIVE Naruto chapters.

Meh..and this is why I hate April Fools Day. Guess I need some proof:
http://www.simonsays.com/content/destination.cfm?tab=31&pid=513210&start=41
If you look down the list, you see that vol. 25, 26 and 27 of Naruto are all coming out in December. Coincidence? And 27 is the end of pt. 1, meaning that the next volume starts the time skip/Shippuden. Personally the only reason I can see this besides super-popularity is that other manga are getting further along compared to the golden boy, who just has about 2.5 years of manga out. (whereas Bleach is nearing the end of Soul Society and will start the Vaizard/Arrancar stuff by the end of the year)
-
Wait Wait. What the fuck? So Naruto gets about 14 volumes released in like 8 months? Holy shit.

Shônen JUMP June 2007:
More Ninja Than Ever!
We don't need a sixth sense to know you want to read more Naruto. In fact we know that there's more Naruto Manga in your future. That's because starting thi issue we've bumped up the number of chapters to a whopping four total. Andnext month we'll even go up to five. If this all sounds too good to be true, it's not–and there's more. All of this manga madness is building up to our big issue in January next year, when we'll unveil and extra special treat that will rock the Naruto world (and yours). Check back next issue for more details!
-
That is sickening.
-
So the time skip starts by January. Wow that's….Man I am speechless.

I think you forgot the very last part that's in small print
"Oh and you fans of the other series we're just going to knock them down to one chapter each"

OP and YGO at least had two chapters this month!!
Wants OP to be release in bi-monthly GNs
-
Well, just think positively: Naruto runs out of gas, I gather, once the timeskip happens. (although some would say it does so much before) Will the Naruto fanbase stick around once it starts sucking? I could see the Naruto manga fandom suffering a bit of a dropoff in a year's time.
Aside from general fanboyishness, I think the OP fanbase has a lot of light at the end of the tunnel: W7/Enies Lobby and Thriller Bark are IMO better than Skypeia and possibly even Alabasta (admit it, Mr.0, your plan was too complex and silly)
Their original cash cow (YGO) is almost dead. They're burning through their current one (Naruto) at a remarkable rate. There's nothing really else which can take their place in ASJ now (YYH is ancient, SK never took off, and HnG is clearly a joke) except One Piece.
There are no other "big buzz" series left in Weekly Jump left to start from zero on, and I doubt they'd take a series like Bleach that had been tanko-only and put it INTO ASJ
Expect a lot more OP dependency coming out of ASJ in 2008 or at least 2009.

HnG deserves more credit then that.
I'm hoping for stuff like Whistle! and DB to get their early chapters reprinted in the magizine for the heck of it.

I don't have a problem with the series per se, but I cannot imagine a way to market it to a mass American audience. I'm sure a lot of manga is like that– it doesn't hit cultural buttons we have. I don't imagine people in America rushing to the store saying "Gotta get the new Yakitate! Japan!"
Of course, I suppose the first meeting to discusss YGO probably had the same problem. "He plays a card game with world-ending possibilities..." "..."
-
Well honestly a card game is a lot easier to promote then an ancient Chinese board game.
-
I can scan anything from the book but it will not let me post here. You can im me at shonenjump74 @yahoo and I can send it to someone who can post it .

Well after looking over the final volume of that series today (Chopin vs. a bread-bodied minotaur!? The main character being advised by Dhalsim!?)…well then again, Ja-Pan is pretty much a bunch of shonen parodies from what I hear but its just weird.
As for the state of SJ in America, I think they just want to get to the timeskip sooner like I said before. Yes things become crap (can't wait to see America's reaction to some of the Sasuke chapters both before and now..and with Sai), but its still fresh compared to what they have in the magazine. Not to mention that if even relatively "newer" series like Bleach and ES21 have more volumes out than Viz's big cash cow due to their publishing habits...
-
Ugh. Whores.
Anyway, Just got my issue of Shonen JUMP. Loving it, because Hoshin Engi not only gets the color treatment, but they are keeping the horifics and whatnot! Awesome. Not to mention colored pages of Naruto and One Piece. List of the things that matter:
-Island types: Winter Island, Summer Island, etc.. Nothing so bad here.
-Hiking Bear.
-The Snow Village - Big Horn.
-Captain Dalton - Drum Island Civilian Guard.
-Drum Rockies, "Dr. Kureha, whom people call "The Witch". Awesome. I was worried about this part.
Oh god.
-"Atta girl, Nami!". This just sits wrong with me. Badly. "That's the Spirit!". "You got it!". Were the alternatives really that bad?
-Lapins. K-F translated as "Lapahn". While I think that "Lapahn" sounds cooler, "Lapins" probably works as well. When you think "Lapin", you think of something petit. And ironically, Lapin are gigantic. So, either way.
-Black-Beard. With a hyphen.
-

Well, they have been pushing Eyeshield 21 and Jojo in a few issues, trying to get fans by interviewing the creators and such…
-
Ok…even I know thats too much naruto ... boo.XD
I havent read naruto in SJ since it debuted.. which was 7-9 years ago XD
-

A year or so back I remember they put in one chapter each of Whistle, Prince of Tennis and ES21 for some sort of sports thing (remember ES used the NASA Game)…but recently all I know is that they had a couple preview chapters of Bleach...because...well...its Bleach, flavor of the moment.
-

Well it's also another word for rabbits… specifically castrated Male rabbits...

Eh, I've gotten used to Viz's sometimes corny scriptwriting, and I've seen worse. Lapins doesn't bother me, cause I wasn't even sure what we were calling them in the first place. "Black-Beard" is the only thing that really irks me. Hopefully they'll change it later on, but if not I guess I can live with it.
Anyway, about the Naruto thing. I really don't know what to think of it. All I know is I'll have to see it myself to believe it first. But if it is true, my immediate reaction is that I'm actually excited about it. I do like Naruto (not nearly as much as I like One Piece though) so I think it would be cool getting all the Naruto volumes so rapidly (I wish they would do the same with One Piece). Of course I have no idea what other consequences could come about from this, whether it'll affect Naruto's popularity or One Piece's or whatever. Remember that more people watch the anime than read the manga, and heck people may still love Naruto even after the time skip. Americans don't know what they like, they may continue to like it simply because it's Naruto. Well, whatever.
Back to One Piece, still no Chopper or did he get his introduction along with Kureha? (I haven't been very up to date with the latest SJ issues)
-
This post is deleted!
-
Just rename Shonen Jump "Naruto Monthly", why dontcha, VIZ? What with all they're doing for Naruto, I'm half expecting them to completely ignore Filler Hell by the time it's supposed to show on Toonami and skip right to Shippuden.
-
About the Blackbeard thing, there was not enuff space in the bubble to write it out so I think that is why it has the hyphen. Starting next month, Bobobo joins the book .
