Ah, that's another reason why I like 6…no true main character. I hate having to keep a character in your party that you don't want there (you only have to do this during certain storyline points of 6…but for the most part you can choose your party).

Yeah, that's another reason why I like VI. Every playable character in it is so fleshed out that all of them are main characters. It was a true ensemble and it was the last FF game to have that kind of feeling with it. All of them got moments to shine. While the plot starts out revolving around Terra, characters like Locke, Celes, Sabin, Edgar, and Setzer were all vital to the main story.

Well, since we're talking about Final Fantasy….. I once had a link before that told me of the differences between the North American/European versions of the Final Fantasy series compared to the Japanese series. - Nevermind, I just found it at www.eternal-legend.com. However, if you'd still like to follow up with an answer, fine by me.
I was wondering which FF games are equal to which. Such as, Final Fantasy VI in Japan is different from our FFVI, it wasn't the same or something. Well, I'm about to go and read up on it now. Any less confusion would be great.
….. Did my post make any sense at all? Or should I start a new topic if this isn't relevant enough to the current topic?

**I think I know what you mean. I'll attempt to answer:
Final Fantasy (Japan) = Final Fantasy (U.S.)
Final Fantasy 2 (Japan) = didn't have a U.S. version until the remakes on PS1 and GBA
Final Fantasy 3 (Japan) = didn't have a U.S. release (and I don't think there is a remake yet…or is there already one? Sorry, I'm not always up to date on video game news....)
Final Fantasy 4 (Japan) = Final Fantasy 2 (U.S) - re-released as FF 4 finally in the U.S. in FF Chronicles for PS1
Final Fantasy 5 (Japan) = Final Fantasy 5 (U.S.) - unreleased in the U.S. the first time, but the remake was released in FF Anthologies for PS1
Final Fantasy 6 (Japan) = Final Fantasy 3 (U.S.) - re-released as FF 6 finally in the U.S. in FF Anthologies for PS1
FF 7 (Japan) = FF 7 (U.S.)
FF8 (Japan) = FF8 (U.S.)
FF9 (Japan) = FF9 (U.S.)
FF 10 (Japan) = FF 10 (U.S.)
FF 10-2 (Japan) = FF 10-2 (U.S.)
FF 11 (Japan) = FF 11 (U.S.)So basically...in the U.S., at first only FF1, FF4 (called FF2), and FF6 (called FF3) were out. Then FF 7 came out, and they just left the number alone. Since then, they have left the numbers unchanged. Also, whenever a remake has been released, they have kept the numbers the same.
Sorry if all of what I said was confusing.
Edit: By the way, when I say "U.S." I mean the North American versions. Sorry...U.S. was just easier for me to type.
And I guess it's the same for the European versions, but I don't know myself.
-
Yes, exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Captain Kuro. I'm still a little confused, but I'll get it eventually. (I'm thinking of maybe scooping up all of the FF games, though some of the older ones might be a little difficult now) So then, that means the only FF game we're missing to date is FFIII. Gotcha. Thanks again.

Here is some more info that might be helpful about which versions contain what:
For FF1 and FF2, you could either get the GBA FF Dawn of Souls, which contains both. Or the FF Origins for PS1, which also contains both. I know the GBA one has a lot of bonus stuff. I don't know about the PS1 version…I think it might have had CG cinemas though, but I'm not sure (I don't own it).
For FF3...I expect there will be a remake soon.
For FF4...I would reccommend Final Fantasy Chronicles for PS1. It has FF4 and Chrono Trigger on it. It is basically a newer translated version of the original Japanese FF4 with the missing moves of the old english version. (The SNES FF2/FF4 was missing some moves and is considered to have an easier difficulty level.) You could get the SNES version though (no load times). I just like the remake because of certain moves that were originally removed in the U.S. version, but were left intact this time.
FF5 was only released in english on FF Anthologies for PS1 (with FF6).
FF6 is also on FF Anthologies for PS1. It only has a few differences from the SNES FF3/FF6. The script is mostly the same. The PS1 version has CG cinemas, but also has long load times. So, the SNES version is also good, because of less load times (which helps during certain "timed events" which are harder on PS1 due to the loading).
And as for FF7 and up...they are just available as they are.
Oh, don't forget FF Tactics for PS1. It's awesome. (There's also Tactics Advance for GBA, but I haven't really played it much). It's not part of the "main" series, but Tactics is such a great game I had to mention it.

Sheesh, aren't you so blunt.
'..true words are never beautiful'- Dao De Ching
Sephiroth is indeed an awesome-looking villain. The final boss music of FF7 makes every single theme in game history envious. Having Aerith die was an un-fucking-believable twist and something that surprised me to the very end. FF7 was revolutionary for role-playing games.
That's where anything and everything nice I could say about FF7 ends. Sephiroth was a weak human who was duped and if anything deserves pity not my hatred. Lest we forget the only thing 'awful' he did was knock-down Tifa and injure Cloud. Other than that he just hung out in the ice waiting for Black Materia and Jenova to use him like the puppet he was as Vincent and Lucretcia's son driven to a pathetic dillusional state by Hojo. I felt compassion for Sephiroth.
Kefka was a psychotic mass-murdering bio-mage enhanced god-clown ego-maniac fuck-head from Hell. 'nuff said.
Although yes, I was young and inexperienced in RPG's as a youth I NEVER saw Kefka becoming what he became. FF games have yet to pull over something like that on me. FFX came close but it was just kind of….lame.... how that was pulled off.
Music, don't get me started. Yes OWA is an AMAZING piece! No doubt. But overall FF6 has the greatest soundtrack of any video game only beating Chrono Trigger because Robo's theme is just slightly annoying (which is coincidentally the ONLY thing FF6 can claim being anything other than EQUALLY fucking unbelievable compared to Chrono Trigger)
Exp. System-archaic? Sure. I wouldn't even dare say it was revolutionary for its time. But you know what? It was DAMN FUN and simple. And I also liked being able to make a party that was actually unique. RPG's lost a piece of their heart and challenge the day they turned towards making each party member an "Anything" character.
Story? Please. Spare me any argument. Yeah Aerith was a surprise. That's without a doubt. But it doesn't change the fact that I didn't give two shyts for the biznitch. Although on subsequent plays the game goes incredibly fast, the time spent with even the 'annoying characters' on the first run gives you an amazing sense of their connectivity to the real story. As far as I'm concerned, it's the ONLY game with that many CONSTANT playable characters that makes each one of them special. Don't even go there with the Chrono Cross shit. Chrono Cross was a steaming pile up until the last 1/8 of the game. Any game that makes me feel like I know more than 6 people better than I know some of the kids who I went to school with (the weird ones) deserves a medal.
FF6 is gaming perfection, a beauty to behold.
-
oh well, i could still argue, but its a lost cause, and it just comes "to each his own" however frustrating it can be. Changing anothers opinion is a near-impossible task. :)

**Final Fantasy 6 is the best and Kefka is a better villian than that bishonen boy Sephrioth could ever be.**
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Also regarding deaths: The death of General Leo at the hands of Kefka was 10x more heartwrenching than Aeris.

Hmmmm, I'd have to disagree with you which I don't think I've ever done. Leo was neat but no way he could compare to someone I lovingly leveled up for half the game. I mean I didn't care that Aerith died, but I REALLY didn't care that Leo died. For me that was more in the, 'Making Kefka the Sadistic Fuck' department.
-
Hell, I tried to play through 7 again, but I couldn't.
Mash rules by the way.

See, I think my problem was, someone was an ass and told me Aeris dies at the end of the first disc, so I didn't bother to deal with her. Only when I had to (the forest temple), making it a real bitch, considering she wasn't nearly as high a level as my other guys.
Granted, I didn't quite care about Leo's death when I first played it, but when I re-played the game later on, I respected him more and really wished he was a playable character. And yes, it added to Kefka's 'psycho factor.'
-
Yeah, I missed Leo, because he would've been an awesome party member. I hated Aeris!
I always thought Sephiroth was kind of lame… one of those villains they tried too hard to be "cool."

**Leo was the best NPC ever.
And Spehrioth does try too hard to be cool to those people who like silent, mysterious villians or villians who look like they belong in a different gender.
But Kefka…Damn. When you first see him, you just think of him as some pompous, arrogant, low ranking blowhard. ("AHEM! There is sand on my boots!")
But then he surprises me when he poisoned the water at Doma, killed Leo AND Gestahl, and started blowing up villages that opposed him.
Plus, he has the best two lines in a Final Fantasy game ever: "BLOOD?! I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE YOU!" and "This is sickening... You sound like chapters from a self-help booklet!"
-
"Son of a submariner!"
-
I just started playing VI and, as much as I love IV, VI just blows it out of the water. Kefka is definitely the Joker of the Final Fantasy series, which is a VERY good thing. And the opera scene almost brought me to tears.
-
:cwy::cwy::cwy:
Tactics is spelled wrong
and of course, i voted for FFT -
VII was probably my favorite Final Fantasy, as well as the first one I played. My brother's friend let us borrow it, and I was blown away by the gameplay and story. The battle system was the best.
My top 5
1. VII
2. VI
3. X
4. Tactics Advanced
5. IX -
VII all the way
It has a great story, brilliant characters, awesome gameplay and interesting locations.
It is the only FF game I've completed more than once
-
My favorite without a doubt is Final Fantasy VI, with IV coming in a close second. I found the majority of the 3D Final Fantasies (with the exception of IX) mediocre. I've yet to play Tactics or Tactics Advance, but they look pretty fun.
Also, Zidane was one of the greastest video game characters ever.
-
i loved VI it was like a novel and i agree with everyone who thought Kefka was the best villian i hated the bastard. He was the only villian to succed in messing up the world and he was histarical too (you guys sound like a self-help book) and no one can forget his laugh..
-
Well it seems like everyone's goin' on about how awesome FFVI was…
Well allow me to go against that when I say V was more awesome! At least gameplay wise. The Job/Ability system was so diverse, so wide, you could literally spend hours just mixing and matching different abilities however you wanted. Makes up for the less-than-spectacular story. Plus, two incredibly badass songs (The main theme "Ahead on Our Way", and "Battle on the Big Bridge").
Of course, I love every Final Fantasy game that I've ever played. (XII is nipping at my heels right now for the best one though).
-
XII isn't on there so I choose KH (no, I don't consider it a FF game). I would have picked 10 but hardly play it anymore.
Final Fantasy VII = Most overrated game in history.
-
The poll was made before XII was released, so…..yeah...
-
IX is my favorite even though I don't get the ending at all.
-

Wow, you pretty much summed my thoughts there.
VI is not only my favorite FF, but my favorite game ever. -
I think I'm gonna download the rom of FFVI. I saw a clip of it on youtube a few months back.
-
wow…ive just noticed that i revived a 2 years old thread XD
i dont see how KH can be considered a FF game -
Some people consider it one cause of FF characters being in it, fans and hardcore fans tho nothing pisses them off more than KH being called a FF. Yet they play it all the same.
-
My vote goes to 8, it got my started on rpg's, and i like it better than emo 7
-
What about Mystic Quest?
I think it's the only one I finished without help from Teh Interwebs.
VII was probably a good one, but the PC port had monster stability problems compared to even the worst console game.
-
What happened to the ROM sticky in the help forum? I even searched the forums and it found no results.
Anyways, google didn't turn up anything. Does anyone know where I can get a ROM of Final Fantasy VI?
-
^ Ignore that, Solid IMed me on MSN and helped me.
-
What about Mystic Quest?
I think it's the only one I finished without help from Teh Interwebs.
I was wondering when someone would bring up that game. Mystic Quest was actually a spinoff game made exclusively for the US, marketed as an "entry-level RPG" at the time. And it certainly stayed true to that catch, That game allowed you several luxuries that aren't in your typical FF games and was pretty simple and straightfoward. (The final boss you could literally defeat in a single turn if you knew what magic to use). But you know what, it was this game that first introduced me into RPGs, the Final Fantasy name at that. So while I'd say this is a far cry from being considered the best, or a favorite, it deserves an honorable mention for introducing many gamers to the genre.
-
VI is one of my favorites for two reasons. It was the first Final Fantasy to break away from the whole crystal storyline, and made up for it with its story, battle system, and characters.
-
I didn't relise this was an old thread, till I read a post asking when advent children was going to be released. My favorite is 6. I can play that one a million times over. I don't even mind leveling up on that one. Everythig about it is good to me.
-
FFIX is still awesome.
I need to reply it one day.
-
I vote for Kingdom Hearts and i own the Final Fantasy 7 movie DVD

Such an underrated game…
-
FF VII, definitely. This game was a major turning point in the disc-based RPG genre. The characters and story are great. It was just the typos that bothered me at first. And recently the Aeris/Aerith thing. I prefer Aerith, as it is the correct transliteration.
-
Such an underrated game…
I agree with you, FFIX is my favourite. When I see people bash FFIX I feel like their arguements don't make any sense at all.
-
I don't remember VI very much, but I plan to get the re-make. It's been so long since I've played it.
-
I prefer Aerith, as it is the correct transliteration.
Yes, very true, I can see that. However…theres just one itsy-bitsy little detail that they forgot...
...and thats that "Aerith" just sounds fucking stupid. No matter how many times I say it, or try to say it, it just sounds like someone's got a speech epediment.
Furthermore, In the Japanese language, "th" sounds don't exist, so the pronounciation that takes over is "su" (ス). Written in Japanese, her name is "エアリス" (e-a-ri-su), Hence the translation, "Aeris". It's acceptable (and way better sounding) in my book.
-
@Cap'n:
FFIX is still awesome.
I need to reply it one day.
If only I still had IX. My brother fucking stole it along with some of my other irreplacable PS games and sold them at a pawn shop.
-
Those games are everywhere in second hand game shops I saw VI,VII,VIII,XI, and X all under 10pd. I bought another copy of VII for 5pd, since my older one was pretty badly scratched.
-
X hands down.
The storyline was the nail for me, it was perfect. I love the ending, and was even moved close to tears in the final scene.
The music was sweet, the main theme of it and hymn of the faith especially.
I liked the main character for once.
Minigames, basically just Blitzball, was sweet. I could do that all day, and then some.
It has the most amazing graphics in any game to date in my opinion(biase weee), and I love water scenery, so that was a definite plus.
-
I have to say 'none' since I thoroughly enjoy just about any FF game I play.
I've played through I, IV, VI, VIII, and Tactics. Mystic Quest, too. Wasn't so fond of MQ, but oh well. I still stay up late playing FFT or FF I on my old NES.
-
9 isn't my favorite, but I love that one a lot too. I don't understand how others don't like it. It was good on so many levels. That sword duel on stage, in the beginning, I love doing that with my dance pad. :3
-
I've only played FF 1-6, but I'm gonna have to rep tha Old School… The first one is my fave...
DragonQuest kicks FF's ass all over the place, tho
