@danie I think she’s too proud and too untrusting to be under anyone except Luffy. She would never accept any other man as above her, much less put up to Buggy’s facade.

I mean, you could say something similiar about Mihawk and Crocodile... Oda will make it work if he wants. The idea though is more of an ex-warlord alliance with Buggy as a figurehead for them to abuse. I think it's too good to pass up.
-
@danie The thing is that neither Crocodile nor Mihawk wanted Buggy, things just fell into place that way. But Crocodile and Mihawk were fine into allying with each other and working together.
I can see others also willing to work with them, like Moria or Ms Buckin/Weevil.
But Hancock is a different case. She wouldn't accept an alliance with them even if Buggy was not part of the equation. The only way I could see her accepting such an alliance is with her as leader, which they wouldn't accept.
Besides, while Croc, Mihawk, Moria and others are kinda loners who are forced into allying due to how the world is changing, Hancock actually has someone else she trusts and can turn to for help, and that person is Luffy, an Emperor of the Sea.
As for jokes, I'm sure there's also potential comedy in the side of the Straw Hats.
-
@Deicide Yeah, admittedly, Hancock would be the hardest to sell joining Cross Guild considering how Luffy centric her character is... I think it would serve her character well though. As i said earlier, it can start with her rescuing Weevil from Aramaki...

Will be interesting if Oda decides to develop her with more depth in light of Gloriosa being revealed to have been with Rocks, and that Hancock won't be just someone who shows up for battle in the last 50 chapters either.

Wait a minute, what if Kuma got an order from somewhere in his cyborg brain to go to Egghead, not to save Bonney, but to wipe her out. And that Kuma ends up getting himself killed to save her.
Now that would REALLY be heartbreaking.
-
Or an order to protect any Elder Star when they go down to earth. Deicide had a theory on that, that Kuma arriving could be as an obstacle, not a savior at first.
And him moving away from his orders and managing to save Bonney and the Strawhats would be a good way of showing him regaining his humanity. -

-
@Chams-0 Yes, I do think Kuma may not be coming for any reasons of his own.
I believe Saturn gave him a conditional order when Kuma went to Mary Geoise. Something like:
"You'll obey orders given to you, but this order takes priority over all others. If the Revolutionaries or any former ally ever come to rescue you, do not attack them. Cooperate in your own escape. Let them take you, find their base, spy on them, learn their leaders' whereabout, wait the right moment, then return to me, and only me. Do not ever talk about this command to any and ignore all commands in contrary."
So, Kuma was taken, learned the Revolutionaties are in Kamabakka, found out where Dragon and most leaders are, and returned to Mary Geoise. Since Saturn wasn't there, he instead went to where Saturn was: Egghead.
This explains a lot of things: why Kuma was used as a deluxe slave instead of a weapon, why he didn't fight back and even ignored Roswald's orders when Morley grabbed him, why he cooperated with Dragon's inquiries, and why he left without any clear order from anyone.
-
That does sound nice, Kuma not being the saviour we imagine him to be, but someone we have to overcome in addition to Saturn.
But will it happen at the end, I am not so sure about it. With One Piece theme of Will and all, maybe Kuma will break free or regain his memory as soon as he sees a hurt Bonney or whatnot. At least that's my hope and if there is any merit to the Number Theory, who will end up with his Devilfruit once he dies, or is Blackbeard the one who comes and steals it for one of his crewmates. -
@The-Light-of-Shandora I see Kuma more as a hostage than a threat when he arrives. He's quite damaged, so even if he's ordered to attack, his threat is limited.
However, Bonney will want to rescue him. I expect Bonney/Kuma to get a happy ending, together, but it will be quite a challenge.

Seeing as how this is the same manga as when Ace got killed in front of Luffy after he went through hell to save him and what he has done with Bonney’s story, somehow I don’t think Bonney’s happy ending is with Kuma.
Kuma seems like one to risk a lot to try and save Bonney. I can’t imagine a character like that surviving long-term given the current circumstances.
Honestly, if Kuma dies with the knowledge that Bonney will be safe with someone else he trusts, then is it out of line to suggest that would be enough of a happy ending for him in term of what he’s trying to achieve, given how the manga has done this sort of thing before?

With next chapter hyping a reveal of "the truth of the world", I recently had the off-the-wall thought that the One Piece universe is, in fact, a fictional universe In-Universe. It was a story of some kind, a tale full of laughs, but once it was over the World Government decided to keep it as stagnant as possible so that the story never picks up again and stays as it is. This is why the Gum-Gum Fruit is such a threat in particular, it creates a legitimate cartoon character that can drum up new interest and get a new story going.
Alternatively: The Void Century is literally that, a void of 100 years caused by a story's Time Skip. Even outside the fictional world theory, it's a thought I've had before that there literally isn't anything in the Void Century.
-
So, since we are about to find some more about the Void Century, here's my current theory on it. However, it's not a complete theory, there are a lot of holes to be filled.
To me, the history of the Void Century begins way earlier than 900 years ago. There are two known eras of human history in One Piece: Tenreki (Sky Calendar) and Kaienreki (Sea Circle calender). I feel the change happened when the "gods" (Lunarians and other moon people) descended to the world.
The gods, with their superior technology, created the Red Line, splitting the world sea, the All Blue, in two. They were not malicious, but they isolated themselves and did not care for the humans and fishmen who lived in the lower world.
As a result, the world's peoples were split apart. Trade rotes were disrupted, contact between the now split seas became more difficulty. People had to rely on the mermaids and fishmen, who controlled the only route between the two halves.
Over the 600 years since the Lunarians, the world grew used to that new status quo. It was harder to acquire resources and technology from the other side, and some nations thrived, others dwindled. Some relied on slavery and wars to compensate the limited commerce.
But then the period that would become the Void Century began. That's when an Ancient Evil rose among the lunarians, splitting them apart. This Evil took over their Ancient Kingdom and looked to the lower world with covetous eyes.
The Ancient Evil descended on the lower world for conquest. Nations had to submit and serve, or be destroyed, and it became a period of war and slavery. Amid the desperation, people prayed to the Sun God and their prayers were answered with the appearance of the Joyboy.
Joyboy travelled the world in a grand adventure, gathering allies and uniting the people of the world to fight the Ancient Evil. Human kingdoms, fishmen, and many others, even Lunarians who opposed the Ancient Evil, followed him.
A terrible war was fought, and, after decades of conflict, the alliance defeated the Ancient Evil and conquered the Ancient Kingdom. A plan was devised to use the Ancient Weapons to destroy the Red Line and return the single All Blue ocean that once spanned the entire world.
But some among the alliance envied the Ancient Evil and the marvels of the "gods". 20 kings gathered and plotted treachery. They betrayed the alliance and struck against the now-weakened Ancient Kingdom. However, Queen Nefertari Lily was a mole within the 20 kings.
With Lily's help, not all plans from the other 19 kings were successful. Joyboy was able to tell his story through the poneglyphs, and the Ancient Weapon Poseidon created the Calm Belts and the Grand Line as a gauntlet for protect the lost history.
The 19 traitor kings took the place of the old gods and formed the World Government, in many ways keeping the oppressive practices of the Ancient Evil. Meanwhile, Lily disappeared to prepare for the day Joyboy would return.
And that's why the World Government purged the records and forbid the study of the Void Century. It painted itself as the savior of the world, but it in truth it just replaced the Ancient Evil, but lacking the entirety of its strength.
But wills survive. Dreams never die. As we all know, Joyboy's will is manifested in Luffy. But the Ancient Evil's will has also been inherited by someone. And that person is Blackbeard.
That's the gist of it. I can't fill up all details, and some parts may be wrong, but I'm sure there's something the Elders and Imu fear as much as Nika. Ever since Teach was among Imu's posters and Rocks was revealed, it feels like there's two opposing ancient wills in conflict.
There's also hints that the world wasn't all good and just before or during the Void Century. The fishman already dreamed of living under the sun, Dressrosa already had enslaved the Tontatta tribe, the long-arms and long-legs were already in war. As such, it's clear the great evils of the world weren't caused by the World Government, but kept by it.
How could the kings defeat the Ancient Kingdom it it were a highly advanced utopia backed by all races in unison? The world defeating an Ancient Evil makes sense, and the kings betraying that alliance to take power for themselves and shatter their unity fits.
Meanwhile, Joyboy's will survived in Roger and now Luffy. So, whose will drove Rocks and now Teach?

Theory The "D" in the Name. Origin and Meaning
The crucial question arises: why the "D" in the name? My answer is: to indicate the origin! The country of ワ!! (Wa no Kuni).Let's try to give substance to the theory.
Let's assume that the name of the ancient kingdom was 和ノ国 (wa no kuni, country of harmony in the Latin alphabet), and that in the 100 years of void, the name was erased by the government to make people forget the characteristic of that great country, harmony. It was then started to be called, by those who still knew the pronunciation, ワノ国 for the simple reason that the pronunciation is the same, except for a slight accent variation (in the Latin alphabet, wà no kuni), otherwise very much like Oda or very much like One Piece as a finding.
The descendants of its inhabitants, initially, to never forget the characteristic that has always distinguished their country of origin and its values, adopted the kanji ワ in the name, as a testament to their origin. Then, as IM himself states, over time, the meaning was lost, and it continued to be passed down as an inheritance, perhaps transformed into the similar symbol (a letter in the Latin alphabet, but in general graphic symbolism, a smile, a crescent moon, anything) D, probably because any reference to the ancient kingdom had become risky. Another silly idea, but always very much like Oda and very much like One Piece. The dream before Joy Boy, then Roger, and today Luffy's dream would be to create the country of harmony, 和ノ国, the country of the D. (P.S. the kanji 和 indicates Japan. The moral of the manga, opening Wa no Kuni, discovering its name and its secret means recreating the country of harmony. The Japan of harmony is the open Japan).
Not to mention the fact, but in truth, we are talking about it anyway, that Joy .D. Boy (with the kanji ワ instead of the D symbol) written in kanji ジョイ ワボーイ (Joi wabōi) sounds very similar to 調和ボーイ (Chōwa bōi), meaning 'harmony boy'. This is linked to the fact, in my opinion, that since the kanji 和 has been banned, even in the name, it has been replaced with ワ, transforming it into 調ワボーイ (so it lost its meaning, that is, it becomes 'music boy', Binks' sake?? just kidding), and over time, being remembered as a bearer of harmony, it has become ジョイ .ワ. ボーイ, Joy .D. Boy.This reflection arises from the fact that, perhaps due to my ignorance, I cannot find a reason why what could be translated into any language as the Country of Wa could find the original correspondence in Japanese as 倭ノ国, or even 和ノ国, with the first kanji in both cases clearly referring to Japan at the level of meaning of the ideogram, as is the Country of Wa in the manga. Instead, a kanji 'ワ' that sounds the same but means nothing by itself has been used, preferred to its pronunciation cousin, even though it carries thousands of years of history. Clearly, there is the possibility that it is a mere stylistic choice, to hide the reference to Japan behind a veil, a play on words (and sounds). But there is also the possibility that it is tied to plot logic, and I have chosen to go down this path.
I realize that dozens may have noticed this connection before me, and probably if it is not talked about, it is because it has been discarded, but having missed this passage, I would like to understand why and where my reasoning loses its way.Following a quick check, it seems that the kanji 和 would really have been removed from the world of One Piece. It is never mentioned even though it would be required several times for words that require the phoneme WA or for words or phrases that could alternatively be composed with the kanji 和. Only in two exceptional cases, which still refer to things related to the country of Wa, is it used. To indicate the Wado Ichimonji (和道一文字) (although the construct to create Wado could not be different, I believe) and in the name of Kozuki Hiyory (光月 日和).
To top it off: Let's take One Piece written in katakana ワンピース (wan pisu) if we perform the usual substitution, we get 和ンピース (wa npisu), which means JAPANESE PEACE!
Goodbye.
-
@OnePiz Those are interesting thoughts. I wonder how translations would explain it if this theory ends up correctly.
-
@Deicide good question... I don't really know, maybe it's written in the 'laugh tale' lol

Springboarding from mapping the globe for the post about the latest chapter, there's something odd about the orientation of the seas.
The East and West Blues are respectively on the west and east of Marie Geoise. From the perspective of the Celestial Dragons, they're on the wrong sides. You would think the people who rule the world would want the map arranged according to their own point of view. But instead, the apparent "front" of the world, from which the orientation of the seas makes sense, is Reverse Mountain.
So what if the names of the seas predate the World Government in its current form? Suppose the previous capital of the world was in the place where these directions make sense.
Could the Ancient Kingdom have been where Reverse Mountain stands now? Its weird uphill currents and channels could be the result of whatever Imu and the fledgling World Government did to destroy the kingdom. And there's a symbolic symmetry in the utopian ancient realm and the dystopia of the present being on literally opposite sides of the planet.
And hey, look at these weird, ancient-looking gates around the base of Reverse Mountain. Hmmm. Food for thought, right?

A sudden thought…
We can make a reasonable guess for the reasons Kuma had to send each Straw Hat to specific islands, except for two of them: Luffy’s and Brook’s. I’ve talked about Luffy’s destination a few times, but we never stop to think about Brook’s…
We know Brook was sent to a country of poor people who dabbled on questionable “dark magic”. However, Brook was later kidnapped and didn’t spend his 2-year timeskip there. As such, it’s likely Brook didn’t fulfill Kuma’s intentions there.
What if that country is more important than it seems? Which characters seem to use “dark magic” that feels real? The elders. And this could extend to Holy Knights and Imu… What if Nerona Imu was the former king of that country…? The rituals of that country may not work, but they may have originated from old stories of ancient kings who used true dark magic. And those stories could have a sliver of truth, as well as ways to weaken or disrupt such powers….
Maybe Kuma sent Brook there because that place may have some link to the Celestial Dragons’ source of power? Brook was taken away and couldn’t really learn much about it. But still, what if he heard anything that could help fight the Elders?

Oars apparently comes from a clan of giants, but not from Elbaf. So maybe it's possible that Oars belongs to a clan of oni, similar to Kuma belonging to a clan of Buccaneers, sub-groups of giants.
-
@electricmastro Did the Vivre Cards not list his race as 'Ancient Giant' or something similar, as a distinct species from current day giants? It could be that his kind were of Elbaf but are extinct now, barring isolated surviving stragglers like Little Oars Jr. Or maybe interbreeding (or even deliberate genetic intervention) diluted their bloodline into the much smaller but similarly-horned oni race of today. But even those seem to be extremely rare...

Also interesting is that the Numbers, based Ancient Giants, more overtly resemble Oni, like the loincloths.
This along with Ivankov's comment about Kuma having the blood of Giants really makes me think we'll learn more about Giant ancestry at Elbaf.

A thought i just had:
The problem revealed to the world is the oceans rising and risking to flood the world.
If only there was a character with an ability to transport huge amounts of matter into a pocket dimension-like space. Almost like sucking it up into a blackhole!
I think Blackbeard at some point will levy himself as a solution to the problem, offering to suck up seas worth of water into his darkness in exchange for power. Perhaps pivoting from his island being a WG recognized country, to fully opposing it and gaining other islands to leave the WG and join him. Propping him up as a full alternative to the WG for nations to join up with.
-
@Md-Martin That would be interesting if people become afraid of Luffy because of what Vegapunk said....and Teach becomes a hero for the water issue.

The fake Straw Hats in G4 in 1115 got me thinking if there is a method to the numbering of the marine bases and I believe there is. I think it is based on the distance to Mariejoa/Marine HQ.
G1 (both new and old) are very close to it as we know.
G2 is close to Lulusia, which is said to be close to Mariejoa.
G3s location we know nothing about.
G4 is where the fake SHs are and since we've last seen them in Sabaody it's not unreasonable to assume they wouldn't have made it too far, they aren't the real Straw Hats afterall.
G5 is Smoker's base, that's not too far from Mariejoa either.
G9 we only know is in the New World, and probably not super far from Egghead, since ships took off from there.
and then there's G14 which is close to Egghead, so that's a fair distance away.Don't think it's enough to confirm, but would be a neat little bit of world building if that was the case imo.
-
Anyways, I think we might be learning more about Lunarians soon. It could be possible that Joy Boy intended future generations of Lunarians to get Uranus, but then the Government killed most of them to get it.
Could speak a bit towards how King was interested in Joy Boy too, in addition to King and Uranus both using flames.
-
I think Buggy is essential for Luffy to achieve his dream.
Afterall becoming pirateking would mean characters like Morgans would swarm Luffy, so to get the peace he desires, it would benefit Luffy, when someone like Buggy would get the glory.
In the eyes of the world Buggy would be the one, while Luffy has the freedom to do as a pleases without THAT much focus on him. (I mean most would know Luffy regardless) -

I'm guessing that there must be some substantial limit, or Blueno could open an air door under the sea and fix everything.
Actually... devil fruits not interacting well with the sea may be a well-thought limitation to make oceans rising an inescapable threat.
