I know it's really because the series only has so much bandwidth for focusing on topics, but what's the in-universe reason for not having robotic heroes? AI and technology are clearly advanced enough, why not go full Iron Man and have Plus Ultrons patrolling the country? It can't be any more expensive than training heroes.
My Hero Academia II - A true Hero

-
The hero marketing lobby made sure that those damn robots don't come stealing hard-working people's jobs. Better have teenagers destroy them as an entrance exam
-
@Coookie You jest, but that's the most likely answer. Lobbying.
Robots aren't empathic enough, and thus less marketable.
Though US probably replace pigs with robopigs, at least in Detroit we know it's true. -
@pariston_hill Oh definitely, heroes are the MHA's celebrities, there's no way that entire market is going to let themselves be replaced by robots
-
The exploitation of heroes for the sake of marketing could have been another good angle to use. We only get glimpses of corruption and exploitation in this series.
-
As an adult, hitting on the parts of society I dislike such as unchecked corporate greed, corrupt politics, and societal inadequacy seems reasonable. However, considering this is a kids/teenager story, 1 out of 3 is pretty reasonable.

Deku used to be adorable and geeky-charming. Now he's just ANGST.

After this All Might fight it actually might become an epilogue topic in the world about the possibilities of heroes without quirks. That's what Deku started off as, a boy without a quirk who wanted to be a hero.

Only 7 pages. Weekly manga may be a thing of the past. Gotta protect the artists.
-
All Might's not done yet. We still haven't gotten mecha attack versions of Bakugo and Todoroki's quirks. Hope he uses an acid attack like Mina. Oh! And can't forget a laser like Aoyama.
Really hoping Horikoshi's alright. Yeah, let this series end and have MHV's creators come back and do another biweekly series set after the main series.

All Might is just the best

Toshinori Rising
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1018605 -
For a chapter label Toshinori Rising we didn't get much about it. I'm really fascinated about how the world was back with AFO and so many villains running amok. That panel with the demolished town told you so much about living in that chaotic time period. I want more. It's unbelievable how interesting this world is but Horikoshi has barely scratched the surface. We need about side story book, stat.
As for the rest of the chapter, it was good. I'm still loving All Might using Class A quirks as equipment. I can see Horkoshi saving Todoroki, Bakugo and Midoriya for last for dramatic effect. After that, I guess it's game over.
-
I'm guessing that panel with the vestige means Sir's vision has to come true :(
-
@Nectar I'm of a similar mind. This was a good not great chapter that mostly relies on nostalgia to enhance the scenes.
And while I totally agree that there are a ton of interesting stories in the history or technology of Horikoshi's world, the plot already feels stretched thin as is between all the characters. Definitely things better saved for a spin-off series at this point.
-
More confirmation that All Might is still the best character in the series.
One of the best things about MHA is the world it has built, so there are plenty of possibilities for spin-offs. We saw it with Vigilantes. The sky's the limit, if only the proper writing can be done.
-
Too bad there's not much history of superhero comics having spinoffs or ever-expanding universes
-
The rights to a series belongs strictly to the author in Japan (as it should) instead of the publisher, but all they need to do is give the okay. It's how we're getting live-action OP to begin with.
I suppose it all depends on how good an editor/publisher is at convincing people.
-
@Jabberwok said in My Hero Academia II - A true Hero:

I was so sure a reason Horikoshi gave My Hero Vigilantes the green light was because he wanted to include Koichi in the final battle like in superhero crossover comics. Maybe not as a major player but him helping a main series character take down at least one b-level villain.
I don't see anything close to that happening now, but I still want a Koichi cameo among any upcoming world reaction panels.
-
@Nectar one would think people of Gran Torino's gen would be less okay with current quirk society or would they be cop loving bastards?
-
Depends on how much had changed.
I'm splitting hairs here but the heroes do the most dangerous missions, not cops (unless they're backing up heroes). And, I'm guessing there weren't as many heroes around Pre-All Might. And what about vigilantes in general? How many of them were running around? But, unlike, Toshinori, they had quirks and lacked any ambition of being a symbol or they just didn't consider it.Wait? Didn't Gran Torino get a hero's license only because he wanted to train All Might? Does that mean he was a vigilante before then? The more I think about, the more I believe cops were basically useless Pre-All Might.
-
@Nectar when I said cop loving bastard I mean a hardline penal populist, the kind that would cheer for more heroes killing criminals.
Kinda like a good number of the MHA fandom in the west. -

Kinda like a good number of the MHA fandom in the west.Ah, I see! I think All Might's a big reason for that. Him becoming a symbol helped dispel the fear that comes with living in a world of uncertainty resulting in wanting harsher punishments. Knowing there's an uber-powerful hero watching over the population would put many at ease.
As for wanting criminals dead due to anger from personal loss (loved one, property, etc.) ... not sure. But, there's the knowledge of knowing criminals will at least be caught when All Might hit the superhero scene. Every time heroes failed since the start of the series, it was a HUGE deal. The public has gotten used to the heroes winning 99% of the time. Anger shifted from criminals to the people that's supposed to protect them failing.
I guess that still doesn't answer your question about the people Pre-All Might who wanted criminals killed. Unless ... the answer is Tartarus. The government lets All Might be the symbol of good, peace, and justice while they quietly lock up the most dangerous criminals, forever.
Makes me wonder when exactly was Tartarus built? Was it before All Might as a way to keep the worst criminals from ever coming back in general? Or ,was it after All Might arrived in order to deal with all the supervillains who used to always get away?
-
@Nectar good if only we where in a setting about heroes in training in an academic environment that could be used as lore dump of world building - and at the same time strife to make students understand the importance of heroism even if for them is just a job - geez I guess we never had a chance of knowing things.
How AFO's and vigilantes era forged conceptions of penal system, how vigilantism was professionalized and exploited as a labour, how hero society came to be, if there was a anti quirk cult - guess that's a movie plot - in society, how heteromorph and quirkless discrimination intersect each other. Given some of those are beyond the scope of a shonen, or even media, nevertheless the could have beens...
-
I guess that's another epilogue paring
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1018648 -
So that's what Horikoshi had in mind for the Kunieda fight. Okay. I'm a sucker for team-up attacks, so that Aoyama/Hagakure move was great.
So... Chapter 400. Will that be the one where All Might gets mortally wounded? Or, maybe the chapter where is uses Deku and Bakugo's adaptions?
-
Anyone else find it kind of weird and random that All Might is replicating all the powers of Class A?
And I guess Fat Gum's dead now. Jesus Christ, what a way to go.
-
I'm confused. What were Aoyama and Hagakure doing?
-
@Nobodyman said in My Hero Academia II - A true Hero:

I really disliked that. Why specifically the class A quirks? Why copying quirks instead of just functionality? A laser is a laser, it doesn't have to be Aoyama's laser. Having multiple appendages and pretending they're Tentacole's, except for one of them being from tail guy was extra dumb.
And from a story perspective, it doesn't make sense that support gear was so limited until now, or the idea that a normie can't be a hero (though that's been an issue for me since tail guy was considered acceptable). Maybe this was supposed to make us feel like the class is contributing to the fight? Because it's not working.
-
Anyone else think the twin snake head attack look like the snake thingies from Dark Souls? Maybe AFO was the chosen undead all along
-
@El-Matematico I can think of several reasons Horikoshi might've had All Might use Class 1-A's "quirks".
-
He's trying to circumvent the "no quirkless hero" rule. But, that just opens up another can of worms. Most notable being the My Hero world is clearly advanced enough to have mechs (piloted by quirkless folks) going up against quirk users.
-
Sticking to the "New Generation Is Stronger" theme. Again, more worms when including weaker student quirks.
-
All Might replicating multiple quirks could be seem as Becoming That Which You Hate aka One For All. Or, just Fighting Fire With Mecha Fire.
-
-
@Nectar Toshinori is loaded with merchandise money. He paid his pal Shields for mecha-car suit.
He chose the 1-A quirks because he's their teacher (a 1-B has more complex quirks that can't be technologically replicated). But the lack of world build, or for better, the fact there wasn't been given a watsonian explanation but a doylist one make all your points a can of worms.
-
@pariston_hill
Hey, P.H.? You think All Might's gonna pull a Number 6 and blow himself up trying to take AFO with him? The guy still hasn't used Minata and Bakugo's quirks. He could do a sticky boom point blank in AFO's face. -
@Nectar that would be nice, but I think the laser was his biggest card in his mecha sleeve
-
@Satsuki said in My Hero Academia II - A true Hero:

Hagakure's invisibility comes from her ability to refract and reflect light so she's acting as a focusing crystal and rebounding his laser.

Pretty sure All Might spent a lot of dough on that tech. It didn't just come from nowhere. In fact, it seems most equipment is expensive and regulated to begin with, and it only became more common among the people due to black market deals (we saw some folk trying to use equipment and causing it to blow up themselves).
The Class 1-A-based Quirks are just homages. Otherwise, you have basic mecha functionalities like grappling hooks, lasers and suction cups.
-
@Nobodyman said in My Hero Academia II - A true Hero:

I find it weird in the sense that I didnt think tech could do that. They just seem to help you use your quirk a bit. But now a quirkless man can fight the strongest villain(or second strongest) using a dozen of borrowed quirks. It seems too much of a leap.
But I can see the charm in seeing the top hero using the powers of the main cast. It's extra validation to their abilities.

Goblin Stain
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1018787 -
FINALLY.
Although I'm still waiting for AFO to fall because he Benjamin Buttons himself.
-
All that's left for All Mech is Bakugo's quirk. Seeing All Might rushing toward AFO gives me the feeling he may self-destruct.
Hmm... Thinking about it, All Might self-destructing will take care of the Stain "problem" as well. Horikoshi can't have him surviving and killing more heroes. Plus, if there's anyone willing to die for All Might, it's Stain.
-
@Nectar Hero society is "reformed" because we killed all on the previous generation criminals. - Horikoshi explaining why in the epilogue we haven't been show class 1-A working to make a better society.

This series made me truly realize how boring someone having all the powers is. It's funny when someone like Cartman in South Park does it as a parody but it's oh so boring when it's done seriously.
-
Imagine having the power of bleeding yourself out at will.
-
AfO's rewinding doesn't make sense. Unless he was already stealing quirks when he was a child.
-
He probably was.

Exactly. That's why writing Superman can be tricky because sometimes he's just TOO damn powerful.
AFO doesn't have much of a personality other than "Mwahaha, I'm evil", either. Shigaraki's a better villain.
