Ad Astra is the best movie of the year. Slow as I like it. I didn't love it, but that's the best thing that came out this year anyway

Weeeiiiirrrrrddd . . . .
I mean, Eddie Murphy managed it but that's because it was a modern Dolittle. If they're doing another Victorian Dolittle then it'll be hard to imagine anyone but Rex Harrison doing it. But hey, if anyone can do it maybe it'll be RDJ.

Never mind, found the trailer. I'm not impressed:
-
No theaters near me are playing Jojo Rabbit or the Lighthouse…. what a bummer
-
Is Jojo Rabbit not getting a wide release?

Can't imagine why it wouldn't, the director is freaking awesomely famous now.
I watched Little Monsters on Hulu yesterday, expecting a bit more than I ended up getting. The protagonist is a completely unlikable prick so I didn't enjoy seeing him doing his thing before they give him the chance to start redeeming himself, though in fairness they did a good job helping him turn it all around in the end. But Lupita N'yongo's character was where it really shone, keeping her composure very well while defending a kindergarten class during a zombie outbreak. Josh Gad's character was perfect, a crude, cursing Krusty the Klown sort of bastard off-stage who destroys the kids' image of his performance persona.

I don't think so, I can't find that or the Light House playing anywhere near me

Zombieland 2 was a really good movie. I have to say it's one of those sequals movies that just as good as the original movie.

I wholeheartedly agree, they're kind of two different animals so it's a little odd to have to compare them in that sense, but it's certainly as enjoyable as the first while bringing a lot of new fun to the table, and there's once again loads of potential for yet another sequel if they feel like going further with it:
! If they want to keep going with further zombie evolution they can have a hive mind sort of thing develop so that even from vast distances, zombies can hone in on the location of prey as long as one of their 'drones' in another location spots them. It would make sense given the cleverness of the Hawkings, so that maybe the same method of killing them won't work on the others who can learn from mistakes. I know the movies don't try to make the threat really seem all that serious until the climax but this one definitely had more serious moments leading up to that than the first one, so a third entry in the series could do that a bit more too. Also it might be fun to see them take it international, maybe have the family of homies go to Canada and/or Mexico if not any other continents.
! I was a little disappointed that they didn't even HINT at Little Rock getting a boyfriend at the end, and hell, they made it seem like she was still a virgin by the time Wichita and Columbus got married. I mean, they could have rolled up on a well-armed hitchhiker around her age and she could have given the camera one of those smiles that lets us know, "oh hell yeah, we're getting another sequel, baby!"
! Also, if Babylon didn't allow guns and disposed of all of them, what exactly was supposed to be keeping them from being taken over by a small but well-armed group? I mean, I get that after the great stampede they probably converted all their necklace peace signs into blades and spears and whatnot but did no one seriously think about defense? Pretty unrealistic, and even more so that they survived that long without being overrun sooner. Plus they even mentioned Dawn of the Dead, which ended with an unruly gang laying siege to the undefended sanctuary, so no one even made that connection to bring it around full-circle even as a criticism.
! And if someone is going into anaphylactic shock, do they not need an epinephrine shot to undo their swelling and closing windpipe somehow as long as they don't pass out? I mean, I made it a point not to let those little plot holes bother me during the movie but afterward I was like, how'd that not occur to anyone to at least point it out and make a joke out of how silly those errors ought to be looked at as? On the plus side, though, it was genuinely a surprise that they brought Madison back since thanks to Albuquerque and Flagstaff, we know the symptoms of becoming a zombie are vomiting profusely and I don't think that's something we saw explicitly stated in the first film. Or maybe that's a unique feature of being bitten by and becoming the T-800 strain.
! One last thing…if you were in Columbus' situation, would anyone have elected not to sleep with Madison in favor of staying faithful to Wichita, which at the same time would give Tallahassee some well-deserved female attention after such a long time? It would be like double-good-Samaritan points if you think about it but I'm curious if I'd be in the minority of being a gentleman under the circumstances (not to mention an airhead like her would probably be sporting loads of venereal diseases and not even be aware of it). -
I finally saw Won't You Be My Neighbor? It truly is a wonderful movie. One that inspires you to be a better person.
This world needs another Mr. Rogers, now more than ever.

Just saw the Lighthouse, very confused

I think it's supposed to be confusing.

Last weekend I saw Parasite, the newest film from Bong Joon-Ho (The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja). Fantastic movie from start to finish. Very clever writing with very funny dialogue and a plot that you keeps you guessing to the very end. Actually, come to think of it, it almost feels like a Coen Brothers movie with its surreal and dark humor, morally dubious characters, and undefinable genre. I highly recommend it.
-
I should watch that and his other movies. I remember waiting until I would be able to watch the Host since the trailers for it looked cool. Don't remember enjoying it as much as I'd hoped but some of his other movies sound cool too. I'd heard of Parasite but didn't know it was from the guy that made the Host.
-
We should make thread for random tv shows also.
-
I am SUPER EXCITED about this, believe it or not. Even though I don't care about the book. Why? Well, aside from it looking like Harrison Ford is actually acting for the first time in years…. (It's also got a couple other actors I like in it)
The director is Chris Sanders. He directed Lilo and Stitch and the first How to Train Your Dragon, and both are among my all time favorite films. He also did story stuff on seven movies from Disney Renesaince between Rescuers Down Under and Fantasia 2000. (He also worked on the Croods which I didn't care for, but the visuals and color stuff came from him and that was all great.)
The dog is CG, but it looks real enough and that'll play to Sander's strengths.
Oh, and the composer is John Powell, who rocked How to Train Your Dragon.
-
Only thing that would make it more Cage is if he directed it also.

Your thinking to small, we mustn't stop there! the entire crew needs to be Nick Cage, he needs to set up the lights, do the make up, Make the wardrobe, edit the movie, write and compose the songs they use in it and also play all other side characters
it will be a master piece BWHAHAHA

Over my four-day weekend, I took the opportunity to watch a number of movies.
! Lagaan: My second Bollywood movie after 3 Idiots. Honestly, I'm not sure which one I like more. 3 Idiots was fun and goofy as hell, but this was a slower and more meticulously-paced story (I mean, it kinda has to be at 3 hours and 45 minutes long). Yeah, it probably could have trimmed a few things, but damn the cricket game in the final act is unbelievably tense. Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
! The Garden of Words: A beautifully animated film, but complicated by the fact that this is a romance between a 15-year-old boy and a 27-year-old woman (Dammit Japan! Why do you have to make it so hard for me to like you sometimes?)
! The Three Caballeros: This movie was pretty fun for a while, but then it got to the last 20 minutes and…wow. The title song is still cool as hell though.
! The Irishman: Was really excited for this one, especially since it features the return of Joe Pesci. The movie is…fine. While Lagaan managed to keep me engaged throughout its long runtime, this movie definitely wavered with me and I had trouble keeping track of all the plot developments and characters' relationships to each other. It's definitely an interesting biopic, but it could have focused its characters and story a bit more. As for Pesci himself, he does fine, but it's a more reserved role as opposed to his usual angry and volatile characters. -
lol. Looks like Ryan is doing The Truman Show in Grand Theft Auto:
-
It's an interesting premise. I just wish it wasn't Ryan Reynold.
-
Awww, why not? Ryan's awesome.
-
Awww, why not? Ryan's awesome.
I think the idea of the movie is better if the character is a straight man or commically overwhelmed. With Ryan it feels we are in on a joke together and I don't think it best convey how fucked up it would be for that character to be in this situation. Also the fact that is an actor known for engaging with the audience will make it harder for me to enter the world this movie is introducing to me.
But he is awesome. It's just a movie where a think his strengths clash with the potential I see in this premise. Ryan is the fun man in a straight world where I want this movie to be the straight man in a fun world.

This year me and a friend of mine decided to randomly start watching Bollywood / hindi movies. Definitely one of the best decisions ever. Some of the most "over the top" ones (the Tiger and Don sagas, for example) definitely benefit from being watched in company + maybe a beer or two, but I'm surprised by how many of the movies we've watched are genuinely good. Like, as you said, Lagaan.
I'd recommend a lot of them for different reasons, but I guess my Top 5 would be: Dangal (so you can keep your Aamir Khan streak going + a healthy dose of feminism in a Bollywood movie, which is quite rare), Om Shanti Om (the ultimate Bollywood rendition? I say yes), Asoka (the most ambitious "adventure" flick ever? I say yes. Beware of the tonal shifts, though), Gangs of Wasseypur 1 & 2 (in fact, a single 319 minutes long movie divided into two. You can watch one at a time. They're really worth it) and one of my favourite films of the decade: The Man Who Feels no Pain, which is, quite possibly, the most joyous and entertaining and pure movie I've watched in years. This is no hyperbole. Extra points if you like martial arts movies, since we could "technically" consider this a martial arts movie, just a totally different kind from what you might have watched before.
I got a bit carried away, sorry.

What is the best Christmas Carol movie? Guillermo del Toro says Muppet Christmas Carol, and he's DAMN RIGHT!

100% agreement! I love that film, and it's not even just nostalgia - it still holds up pretty well!
-
Just watched Marriage Story. FANTASTIC movie and definitely deserves all the acclaim it's been getting. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson give some of their best performances. As long as you're okay with the fact that it's about divorce and, thus, gets pretty emotionally intense at times, I highly recommend it.

I'm not totally sure what you mean, but I guess you're referring to…
! The scene about 2/3 through when Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson have their big argument, which case…um....yeah? Why wouldn't it be credible?

Yep that´s what i mean
! I don´t know, maybe it´s because i never had such a huge "end of relationship" fight with my past partners, but jumping from pointing out their respective mistakes during their time together to "i hope you die the worst possible death" seemed way over the top. I guess it was supposed to illustrate how emotionally involved and influenced they are, but man…

! Considering all the shit they're characters had been through, I thought it was understandable. But I've never been in a relationship or a breakup, so maybe I'm not one to talk.

Maybe, i will look at it again. Have not met someone else who had seen it, hence why i asked.

I watched Always Be My Maybe. It was so good. I'm glad the hype didn't kill it or oversell it. Pretty much how I'd like all my romcoms to be like.
-
I watched Marriage Story. It literally took me one hour to stop thinking about Star Wars and Marvel shits.
Anyway, it's good. I recommend it. Even though I highly prefer Frances Ha.And about the "crucial argument scene" in which the wall is punched. I didn't see any problem with it.

snort So I haven't seen Little Women yet, although I know the story because I've read it like every girl in the country, but this tweet is hilarious:
"Stay past the credits of Little Women to see Jane Eyre step out of the shadows and tell Jo, “I’m putting a team together.”
-
So there is something I want to say about Blade Runner.
I don't like it. In fact, I think it's overrated.

Yep, seems like a case of a movie being lauded for its historical worth and what it inspired, but the actual movie? Wasnt particularly impressed either when i saw it some time ago.
-
I'm fine with not liking it don't know if old movies are overated. Since it's latter work that improve on it tends to make them seem derivative or lacking. They are praised for bringing something new to the table and what they did on their time.
If we're talking movie people love and we don't like I think Children of men is mediocre at best. I think I watched it three times to try understanding why people like it.
-
I didn't like both Blade Runner. I guess we can say it now since the hype has come down. When it came out someone here had told me that "I wasn't part of the target audience" lol

Sequence shots :ninja:
I mean it's still overall a good movie, but "héhé, look at those sequence shots" lol -
Dolittle is getting bad reviews
-
The trailer had a secret cave and dragon. Thats just weird.
-
I finally got to watch The Irishman. Even through the movie is pretty long, I enjoy it. I thought Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino performances in the movie were great.
-
Oof, those are some bad reviews. Sorry, Downey:
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dolittle/But yeah, you could tell from the trailer it probably wasn't going to be very good. I've read the Dolittle books too, it was nothing like them.
-
Watched The Lighthouse and 1917. Completely different movies, but both recommended for their cinematographic prowess. Both have a sort of commitment to the craft of filmmaking that's 100% admirable.
Of course, 1917 is a crowd pleaser and a huge spectacle, and Lighthouse is just weird, murky and not very accessible, but both are very good movies.
Surprisingly (to me, I mean), I might prefer 1917 a tiny bit more, even though I was more hyped for Lighthouse, but that might be cause while watching Lighthouse I constantly went from "man, this movie is great" to "but also a bit stupid" and back to "nah, great", and so on, so maybe with time I'll understand a bit better. But for now, yeah, it's worth it.

watched All about lily chou-chou, one of the best representations of raw emotion i've ever seen , one of my favorite films ever now ,exited to watch more of Iwai's films
