Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

-
Haha, they actually done a Pokemon based on the Blue-Footed-Booby.
-
There were some interesting audio cues in that trailer. Could this be when we get the long rumored Sound type?
-
Official website confirms Gen 9 is the first full open world entry.
They took Legends and cranked up to eleven.
-
If they can do a good mesh of traditional Pokemon and Legends it will be amazing. The graphics already look fabulous, and they even took care of the complaints I had about Legends' designs and dull colors.

Hey, they'll get to every animal eventually. I still haven't got a flamingo-type. And really that looks like a combo of the Booby and a shout-out to Donald Duck. But what's the fire starter supposed to be?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Talking to a friend, apparently everyone on Twitter is already calling the grass starter "weed cat".
-
Apparenrly their names are Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly
-
I love doofy little Fuecoco.
Anyway, I guess this isn't really a big issue, but personally I wish they would phase out releasing two different versions of the same game. And yes, I know that's to encourage trading, but a good workaround for that would be to have branching paths within one game, giving you access to some Pokemon, but denying access to others (see Kabuto and Omanyte), so you would still have to trade to complete the Dex. But then I guess it's the same difference. It's just I hate my dumb completionist brain nagging me saying "Hey, you technically haven't played every Pokemon game".
-
Iunno I got over the both versions thing back in gen 3. You get options, they get money, everyone wins. Would like if the differences were bigger like in BW though.
Also going Donald Duck, that's easily the best starter since Mudkip.
-
It's just I hate my dumb completionist brain nagging me saying "Hey, you technically haven't played every Pokemon game".
I mean I til this day I have never played the trading card game, the GameCube games, the WiiU games, Conquest, Pearl or Diamond (won’t be touching the remakes), nor the full version of either SNAP game, nor Alpha Sapphire, nor the full versions of either Moon & Sun games, nor Eevee & Pikachu, or Sword & Shield, nor the mobile games, very likely will not touch Arceus.
And depending on what happens probably not this game either.
Not that big a deal to not have played every game.
And too no one’s surprise “Lol Gamefreak can’t be original or innovative” 2022 and we still have Pokémon fans bitching about monster design.
-
2 versions is honestly a scam. Trading is already encouraged through rare pokemon and can be encouraged in a lot of other ways that don't include making certain people shell out twice the price for minor changes and with holding content.
Legends only having 1 version created a lot of subconscious goodwill from me.Like people got upset about on disc paid dlc all the way back but if you take just a single moment to actually think about what two versions really is, it's quite a bit worse than paid on disc dlc.
-

Well, I meant the main games. The side games I don't care too much about. Also, I did used to buy both versions of the game, but nowadays I just can't justify that anymore.
-
I like the crocodile
Edit the grass cat is my least favorite
-
The look of the world definitely leaves a much better first impression than Sword and Shield did but until I see more I can't get behind the new graphic style they're using for the humans. It looks very…mobile-y and uncanny valley-ish compared to the anime stylization of Gens VII and VIII. Quaxley has promise, and if Sprigatito doesn't become Grass Incineroar he might be the first Grass starter I pick in 25 years.
... I still need to get Arceus. Just need to whittle my backlog down a bit more first.
-
All hail our overlord Captain Duck
-
To me choosing duckie or croc depends entirely on final forms. If croc turns into a dragon I have to choose it, but otherwise that adorable duck is a given.
-
You think they’ll ever introduce a new Pokemon type?
-
You think they’ll ever introduce a new Pokemon type?
They've already introduced three new types since Pokemon's debut.
As for if they'll add any more types, it's certainly possible, but I don't think that's something they would do lightly. Mainly they added Dark, Steel, and Fairy to help fix the balancing issues with the game, but right now things are pretty balanced in terms of typing, so I don't think there's really any need to. I'm not even sure what types they could add at this point.
-
Light typing. I'm sure just on a what types there could be level there is probably a couple that would make sense. But generally hear on a balance level it's not needed and that it would be better if they just adjust bug/ice typing instead.
-
They could add light and sound. Fairy is probably basically light already though.
Some of the elements could certainly use a bit of rebalancing though. There's no reason for grass to ahve five weaknesses and be innefective against seven things. It's one of the starter elements! Or for ice to have no resistances at all and four weaknesses! That's a holdover from a million years ago when only four things had it (and three of them were half water) and it was the only thing that could take out dragons, but there's no call for that now.
Poison used to be in a weird spot too because it was so often paired with grass and couldn't hurt anything but nowadays at least it has 5 defenses
Honestly if the game didn't have 25 years of grandfathering in play it'd actually be healthier to reduce the total types down to 6 or 8, like how it works in literally every other rpgs with elemental typings, but we're waaaay past that point of balancing. Dual typing makes it a bit more palletable I suppose, even if it is silly you can't actually manage a team with every element no matter what.
-
Probably not a new type, but dammit if Evee is going to be the evolution pokemon, it needs ALL types.
Like whoever made this, it's great designs:
-
since the regis and birds got new forms/additions, i just want new forms for the dogs trio man. i have nothing against farm gods but come on, give the dogs some love.

the bug one is going to give me nightmares and dragon could be a lot better but pretty cool!
-
grass became strong enough when it got the powder moves immunity, and two of its weakness are bug and ice, the weakest types, it is more just fire and flying and a random ice or poison move most of the time, in terms of defense grass is ok until they touch bug and ice for something.
and what is the point of light if we have already fairy and psychic? Same with sound, normal would lose over half of its special moves, what would be a sound physical move, and there would need to be a rework on the sound themed abilities. It would be a change that doesn’t address in game imbalances, and that goes against the direction of how they have been treating the sound based moves, akin to punches, dances, bombs and bites, a subtype.
-
Well yeah, obviously if you added a new type, you rework old things in the process. Same way a bunch of old normal mons became Fairy type, and Fairy inherited some moves such as Moonlight because they now made more sense in the new category..
And it wouldn't adress imbalances if you just gave it all the same strengths as a currently existing simmilar type, no, but there's certainly areas that could be shored up if you were looking to clean them up.
Expanding a sub category into a real category.

That Applegator is adorable. Instantly my favorite. Though by the naming and similarity to the cocoa bean it could also be a Cocoadile?
Of course, can't ignore the similarity to a hot pepper, and with it being fire themed it could be…could be...um.
Dang I got nothing. Kaiman or Gharial don't mesh well with either chili or pepper.
-
Fairy obtained 3 moves, and dark one, then sound would take https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Category:Sound-based_moves most of these maybe leaving overdrive and sparkling aria (and metal sound?) in a weird limbo.
Again, the special moves that normal would be left would be like the type changing ones, hyper beam, swift and Tri attack (wring out? Hold back?)
You said it yourself that pokemon is already way over the recommended type numbers for rpgs because they double dip a lot (separated types for poison grass /ground /rock and steel, ghost dark psychic and fairy could be just light and proper dark, dragon and bug being body types rather than an element that can be infused, normal and type less ocupying the same space, figthing and normal being the mundane types, that most rpgs have air and water for all that is represented by electric flying water and ice
And who actually knows the full chart by heart? I only remember sometimes that rock doesn’t resist rock, and even bug resisting ground. The cognitive load on the current system is already a lot.
The design space for a new type would need to come from “what types are too strong and what types are too weak” plus analyzing if matching those lose ends between already existing types could improve the game, rather than “there are 6 dance moves, and one dance ability time for the dance type!”

Coco is from cocodrilo, which is simply Spanish for crocodile.
-
And who actually knows the full chart by heart?
You don't need to anymore. They quite nicely added in the QoL feature a few games back where it just tells you if the move will be effective after you've beaten a critter once and learned its typing. There's no reason to memorize a 400 piece chart anymore and that's a good thing.
But yes, like I said, obviously the game would probably be cleaner if they could go back two decades and cut the chart in half. That ship has sailed. So adding in more variety is the interesting path now. But since they removed a crapload of moves and we're probably never getting a base game dex over 400 again, well… they ARE simplifying it in other ways.
-

Didn't know that, but the critter resembles an cocoa bean all the same, and "Hot Cocoa" would'd go well with its supposed "laid back" attitude

I think as a fire-type it's supposed to be a pepper, but fuck it that's an apple.

The Japanese name contains the part of the word gator, though.

There's theories the final version maybe be a Cuca Fera.

Do you think they'll implement the new gameplay style from Legends Arceus into this new game?
-
Pokemon Legends Arceus progress.
! Damn, Enamorus was a pain. Both her and Thunderus gave me my first blackouts in this game. Had to look up when I was supposed to throw something at her since I just couldn't figure out the timing.
! Most of the updates are cool, but the Solitude battle requests are kinda ridiculous. Not sure I'll have it in me to do those.
! Oh, and am I really going to have to putz around Mt. Coronet for who-knows-how-long waiting for a space time distortion so I can catch Cranidos and Shieldon? Come on Game Freak. -

Hard to say. It's confirmed full open-world, but it might have different rules.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
If there's one annoying thing about Legends it's trying to figure out how to get to different areas. Specifically ones in higher places.

Just wait. Eventually you'll be able to go everywhere.
Oh, and pro-tip, and something I really wish the game had made more obvious, you can break certain rocks by throwing Pokemon at them.
EDIT: Some nice fanart of the starters' final forms.

One day they'll change it to Water/Dragon.

I mean…they had the chance with its Mega form.

I mean…they had the chance with its Mega form.
That irrationally pissed me off. At least one of Charizard's forms changed it properly.
-
! Just fought Ingo in the dojo and had the most intense battle in the game so far. So intense in fact that it ended up with all my mons and his K.O.d.
-
Oh my god, waiting out the timer for a time-space distortion is dumbest shit ever. Does anyone have a spare Cranidos? I have a few Shieldons I don't need.
EDIT: Phew. Okay, finally got one.
-
Trying to find a way to get into Sandgem Flats is a pain. in. the. ass.
-
I think there is one way :snorlax eyes intensify: or the sea route
-
Didn't know Munchlax spawned in the hot springs, saved me a lot of trouble searching for one in the Obsidian Fieldlands.
-
And now we begin the great task of . . . catching a female Combee.
SO WHY THE FUCK DO POKEBALLS JUST BOUNCE OFF THE THINGS?!
-
Because they saw you already (or you are in the fucking hills and the game doesn’t like to do close range math)
If you lock with both triggers you can see if they have seen you or not.
-
I've been able to catch other 'mons even if they've seen me. Is this a Combee-only thing?
-
I've been able to catch other 'mons even if they've seen me. Is this a Combee-only thing?
Not sure why you're having trouble. Pokeballs should only bounce off them if they have the red X above them.
-
Some mons will try to run away when they see you and still be catchable. A very select few others will sometimes attack you but still be catchable. I can think of Stantler, Pachirisu, and Sliggoo off the top of my head. Otherwise pretty much as soon as they aggro you they become uncatchable.
However, there's also a range limit with balls. If you're too far away, balls bounce off mons even if they are direct hits and even if not aggroed. And this range varies by mon. I'm convinced it's related to their max detection radius; if you're more than just a bit outside of it then the game just won't let you. I hate it. This is only possible with the long-range ball types though.
-
Maybe I should just wait for another area than keep trying in the hills. They've only attacked me a couple times and otherwise only did a "!" then fly away slowly. The one time I got a female in a fight (figuring that might be the only way to catch them), it flew away immediately.
