It just seems like they are being severly under-rated. Yes, they were weak little poop shits when we last saw them, but theor with GARP now. This is the man that cornered the Pirate King multiple times. Is is so far-fetched to assume that they can at least compete with the top SH for a short while?
Why are Coby/Helmeppo so underrated?
-
-
How are they going to compare with the top straw hats?
All coby and helmepo have done is train under garp, where as luffy and company have trained for years and also been threw numerous major battles at this point. -
I say we all wait until Wednesday or Thursday (whenever the new chapter comes out). By then we may know how powerful they are (hopefully). I don't wanna overate them or underate them atleast until I see their progress.
-
you can only assume at this point since we really haven't seen them since the first volume. better wait for this coming chapter.

true, but I'm 99.9999% sure it's them.

It looks to me like Oda is making them extremley strong. I mean, what other purpose would reintroducing them serve?**
-
I can't wait either. And I can't help but think that Coby's the only one who completed his training and helmeppo just said "screw it" and ate a devil's fruit.
That assuming its actually them.
-
Well, for one thing they started out really really weak. They were completely nothing compared to the likes of Luffy and Zoro at the start of there quest, an it fact they weren't much compared to normal people. So, being too strong is pushing it.
However, I think they still can be strong. Yes, it's Garp (wow, so much after one chapter, funny when you think about it), so they'll be stronger. It's easily concievable that they'll be much stronger, and be right ass kickers now, and yes, maybe be able to compete with the SHs for awhile. But let's not go too far. They don't need to beat Luffy to prove themselves.

**Agreed.
However certain people are saying they'll be as strong as a normal marine or slightly above. which I think is bullshit.**
-
Personally I could care less if they're weak, strong or Mihawk strong. I just don't like them. I've always found the duo annoying and fairly average, and while that was fine at the start of the manga, we've met so many other similar characters that have some type of "dream" that are vastly more interesting than the duo. All I'm saying is, it would have been better in my opinion to bring back some of those other characters.
However, this is all assuming, Oda has plans for them to stick around… in one form or another... if this is not the case, and they are gone in two chapters, it is irrelevent (big picture) whether they showed up at all at this point.
-
Refi, I kinda had the same opinion about Helmeppo. Until the animated cover story that is. I know a lot was filler, but I felt it was accurate.
-
I'm fine with them being in the next chapter just as long as Oda keeps tieing up those loose plot thread I've been complaining about (Blackbeard & Ace, Buggy's return, Who is Dragon, Luffy's grandfather etc.)
-
I think Coby might be alot stronger, I dont think so much of Helmeppo. I still dont think they will be on Straw Hat level since they probably dont have the experience. But I imagine the arc will end with Coby telling Luffy that he will beat him and bring him in someday.
-
Why are the Straw Hats so underrated?

Why are the Straw Hats so underrated?
It is kind of ridiculous, but a good thing. It makes things so much easier for Oda to set up the Straws Hats as the under dogs in the next few arcs.
Still though, kind of ridiculous, it is, to underestimate the men who have Dues ex Machina(sp) on their side. There guys are so badass they made their ship have a soul and save their lives, just to boss it around and make it feel pain when they burn it! Who else can does this, I ask you?
-
Please don't start that again.
This guy sounds pretty smart.
-
@Octogon:
Please don't start that again.
It was mostly for the "Going Merry coming backing is ridiculous joke," but yeah, why are the SHs so underestimated come to think of it? I don't think that question was addressed.
What's going to happen to the crew from now on? Even Coby and Helneppo will surpass them if they don't keep getting stronger.

They are obviously still underdogs compared to the big name pirates and admirals, but what confuses me is when people say Vice Admirals are greater. The only Vice Admirals we have really seen are 2 admirals and 1 that cornered Rodger and probably isnt Admiral because he isnt strong enough. And one that is a giant.
I consider all of those exceptions, and we shouldent base of all the Vice Admirals off them.
Aokiji and Akainu- Were admiral level so im going to skip them, since they have proven themselves to be up to that level.
Garp- Also to me has proven himself to be up to that level.
Saul- The reason he could take all the hits he did was because he was a giant, I doubt the world has alot of giants like him laying around. And he got owned by Aokiji easily.
I thought the Strawhats were greater than Vice Admirals ever since they fought and were kind of compared to Aokiji, I thought it was to show the difference between the marines.
I also want to change what I said about Helmeppo, im sure he has lost his lazy additude after staying with Garp for awhile.
-

Woah, woah , woah, let's not get off topic cause of something me and Octogon said.
-
@Octogon:
That's just the way the cookie crumbles.
I say the same about your question, then. Why would they make a big deal about CP9 and Enies Lobby if Garp alone could get Screech and Urkel to their level in maybe less than 2 months?
Those two were so damned dandy, it would be a suprise if they're at Tashigi level. Which isn't horrible for new recruits anyway.
-
At least Coby will become strong enough to capture Alvida, as he claimed back then.

Whoa, good point! That's some hypocrisy….
Think of it:

**Because these kind of situations are rare? EN isn't a place that was impentrable. t seems there are quite the number of people that could easily destroy EN. It's just that people imagined it that way.

It's just that people imagined it that way. You're messing with us aren't you? You're just one of those guys who like's to press fans buttons and see them react, even if you know it's BS. If that's so….you're so cool...
Seriously though, a huge fence, 10,000 marines, 2 giants, 9 CP9, several men who swing giant metal balls (and STILL have stealth), a Buster CAll, and 200 captains.
It was supposed to be invincible, just like so many things in One Piece. Kind of like Enel, but, surprise! Luffy's made of rubber. Or Croc, but surprise! Luffy has water! Or the CP9, but, surprise! Tekkai can be broken--a lot!
And now that's it's somewhat recently been defeated, you're going to say that "it isn't a place that was impentrable." I wish you said that early!
Edit: That was a joke? Lame, and you were asked a serious question! And what does Bruce Almighty have to do with anytihng?
Double Edit: I did! ...a while ago. That's why I don't get it. Why does this God themed movie had to do with Enies Lobby only "seeming" like an impenetrable fortress. Does it have to do with the way people imagined God? That has hardly anything to do with it.
-
**Nevermind, I'm sorry I even asked this question.
I'm going to the blender.**

Well, I just meant that they're underrated for the same reason. On the grand scale, I'm still bugged because I know Luffy's weak, but I think it would suck if the two cousins from Perfect Strangers got close to him just by hitting each other with shinai.
-

**I'm not saying they'd be as strong as Luffy, cause even I doubt that for now. Just that they would be able to hold their own for a bit. Or at least not get instantly vaporized.
@ onemoment: You would know if you watched the movie.**
-
They are normal humans. Thats why. They simply won't be capable of doing much of anything to the top SHs. Unless they have devil fruits now.
-

i refuse to think that helmeppo can surpass the people that defeated the CP9 :getlost:
-

Didn't the SHs just come back from getting a butt load stronger?
-
Who says Coby and Helmeppo are underrated…? In my opinion, Coby will indeed serve a much bigger purpose in future chapters. Like someone else said (Just to lazy to scroll up), why would you re-introduce someone who wouldn't serve a purpose?
This is actually WHY I love One Piece so much; character development. Most other cartoon's are severly lacking in this factor. Everyone in the show so far has changed in incredible ways, and this constant, changing variable is why One Piece has kept it's many fans for the 10 year (Approximatly) runtime.
I actually think everyone's opinions will change of Coby not just soon but almost immediatly.
As for Helmeppo, I couldn't give less of a shit, because he was a dirty scumbag from the start and I doubt Oda could convince me otherwise.
-
For what I see they could be stronger than your averange marine but weaker than your averange straw hat. Sure they were trained by garp, but the Straw Hats defeated the strongest cp9 in history. 'nuff said.
-
I'm not even going to rate them until I can see what they can do. Honestly though, I hope they aren't that strong. If I tried to rate them now I would just be biased because I don't like either of them.
-
I must say, though, I can't wait for the next chapter, when we'll most likely get a full shot of Coby so I could see how much he grew.
-
they should be underrated. luffy, zorro, sanji all trained since they were little kids i would hate it if helmeppo and copy were comparable to them in just a few months that's just stupid.
-
Well, I just meant that they're underrated for the same reason. On the grand scale, I'm still bugged because I know Luffy's weak, but I think it would suck if the two cousins from Perfect Strangers got close to him just by hitting each other with shinai.
Going by classic shonen logics, former weaklings being trained by powerful, important characters greatly improve (see Piccolo/San Gohan). Now, of course I don't expect them to be anywhere near the top 3 Strawhats, or Franky and Robin. I can see Helmeppo trying to get his revenge against Luffy only to get comically slaughtered off screen like Usopp at Alabasta against the Kung Fu Dugong.
Coby… Given the fact he has a dream, already is a non commissioned officer (he doesn't wear the average grunt clothes anymore) I'd say he could take down Usopp and maybe could give Nami and non monster Chopper a run for their money, and that's about it.
-
do you guys remember when did coby left? when there is only Luffy and Zoro, even before Nami! It was in Book Volume 1(chapter 8)!!
After 400 over chapters(45 volumes or so) Coby & Helmeppo gonna be like super different, super strong even! I am pretty sure.. Well we will see in this week chapter anyway… -
Where is the "how come [they] are so overrated thread?"
It's unfathomable either one can take on any single Strawhat (including Ussop and Nami) considering the strength increases all of them have been building since the beginning of their adventure.
I'm sure Coby and Helm. have not been through the types of Hell that the Mugiwaras have trudged through.
This is all speculation anyways. I'm sure we will see a lot more in the next couple of chapters. I just feel that unless Oda pulls Devil Fruits or some other kind of weird training like Rokushiki (sp.), then there is no way for the two pupils to compete at this time.
-
I think people underrate Colby and Helmeppo, because they super overrate Luffy….........
however, I think Colby could at least fight, but he won't be able to hold his own with the top 3 SH.....
however, he might hold his own against Usopp, Chopper, Nami(?) and if he is really good enough, he might be able to hold out longer in a fight with Robin........
However, people do change..... Colby and Helmeppo are no exception....... we might see him as the "everything is impossible" boy in the beginning, now he might be one kick ass marine........
-
.!!!
IT SUDDENLY STRIKE ME!
it by any chance when Coby & Helmeppo reunite with Luffy and Zoro they might leak out how long has it been since they last saw each other!!!!
That is like letting us know of the real amout of time they spent in East Blue and GrandLine after they had departed from that unknown island's marine base!!
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET~~~~~~ -
I can see Coby and Helmeppo as Liutenants now, the same position of Tashigi.
-
here ONLY FOR YOU a spoiler of the new appearence of Koby…
nice, isn't it?
-
@ ramza85: I wholeheartly agree, even if Greg/other people spent a ton of time doing the most accurate timeline one could hope for at this point. My guess is that it'd be closer to their timeframe (2 or so months. I forget.) than the 2+ years that seems decently reasonable.
On topic: I don't think the two are underrated. I think that they can take out Morgan now, but they still have a little bit to go. Unless they've eaten a DF (if so, then throw logic out the window), I think most can agree that they've grown exponentially from where they were, but not enough to beat any SH. Including Ussop/Soge King.
-
Why the hell not Usopp? Coby and Helmeppo likely have been on Grandline for the same time than the crew, maybe even longer, as Luffy spend quite some time in Eastblue with Usopp and Nami's recruitment.
As soldiers serving under Garp's orders, they may have fought and defeated opponents as strong as the ones Usopp and Nami took down. And for some reason I don't see Marine HQ non commissioned officers get beaten down so easily by the Franky Family.

Kljs, its coby, for crying out loud.
I do expect growth from Coby and Helmepoo (just had to do that >_>), but, ~8 months (offscreen time counts) seems like way too little to catch up with them. I would just expect them to be badass strong marines.
begs to Enel for comic reliefEdit: In the name of Enel, please, let no mod see what I just wrote >_>

Wait, what were those marines at Enies Lobby then? Not Marine Headquarters, no, but marines from one of the strongest marine bases.
-
How is Coby a little kid and then a young adult. Has he been using steroids. We all know Chopper uses them
-
@Taichi:

Well, it has been a LONG time since we last saw them. And besides, they were training under Garp, probably one of the strongest Marines, considering he's a D.
