Laugh Tale (Raftel) - Episode 968
One Piece Episode 969 Preview -
I WANTED TO HEAR THE LAUGH
What a ripoff
o wells, nice to hear Memories again
-
If it isn’t the original voice actor, I don’t want to hear the laugh. I’m glad it turned out the way it did! Great OST choice! Bravo.
-
Huh, I didn't think they'd drop the ball on such a pivotal scene but they did.
One of the rare times the anime has come up short ever since getting to wano.
-
Maybe I need to reread the manga, but I'm sure Laugh Tale/ the treasure was purposely kept featureless and what Roger's crew was looking at was completely left blank/white to keep things up to interpretation and keep speculation going until Luffy makes it there, but in the anime its apparent after repeated rewatchings that Roger's crew is standing in the midst of what looks like a very large object in the distance, even though said object is obscured so you can't immediately make out what it is. Its gonna be a crazy next couple of years watching the fanbase speculate on how accurate Toei is here; Whether Oda gave the animation crew the vaguest of hints for their adaptation, or if they were told to make something up for the scene themselves.
-
It looks like Roger and his crew are looking at some sort of giant tree-shaped object that's off in the distance. There's still some room for interpretation - like whatever that is could be part of the island, a natural feature or building or something, while the One Piece itself could be something else that's much smaller and/or closer to the crew. I doubt Oda will confirm whether he gave the anime staff the inside scoop or not, at least until the actual manga reaches Laugh Tale but this episode'll definitely add some more kindling to the fires of speculation.
I feel like the nostalgia trip of "Memories" did the heavy lifting during the Laugh Tale sequence but eh, there weren't all that many ways to portray that scene and it was probably one of those ones that the staff felt obligated to copy straight from the manga with minimal-to-no changes. There was some fun character animation with Buggy in the second half (as an aside I had originally assumed that he was bullshitting his sickness like Usopp does, but I guess he was actually sick).
-
Well, it took almost 1000 episodes, but it’s great that we finally got to the episode in which the One Piece is found, huh guys?
-
What a great episode. Now for three weeks of terror and depression.
-
It’s about time for a new theme song, episode count-wise. Anyone think they’ll start a new one before the war begins? I’m worried they’ll keep this one for way too long because it has war scenes previewed in it. I loved Over the Top, but haven’t been as hot on this one.

Probaby when the flashback ends, thats my guess.
When should we expect this month's staff list to come out?
-
Yeah, I’m pretty ticked about the missing laugh, them cutting away way too fast from his laugh (the one time in the series that we could stand to stay with something for a moment), and the “LAUGH TALE” stamped in Arial font on a black screen randomly. But other than those three things, loved the episode.
Last episode was the real masterpiece though. I rewatched it, and man that was wonderful. Three different important islands visited, crucial scenes on each, not a wasted minute, interspersed with adventures and sinking Bink’s Brew together. Beautiful stuff.
-
Watch as next episode Toei adds an extra scene where we learn way more about the One Piece and everybody spends the next four years arguing over whether or not it was canon.

Called it.
The anime spoiling stuff that hasn't happened in the manga yet is becoming a real problem.
-
They probably should hold back on a new opening until they actually arrive at Onigashima since there's some major spoilers stuff happening on the way there just after the flashback.
-
Jinbe has not even showed up yet in the main story, so they'll keep the opening up until Onigashima at least.

Dang, that's some attention to detail you guys have. Haven't seen anyone else talk about the fact that it may have been One Piece all fogged up. When I tilt my screen it looks like I'm looking at a giant building? So that immediately gets rid of the idea that One Piece is a giant pile of gold, for the few who still thought that at this point. :P
Loved the episode! Memories worked for me, the last thing I wanted was for them to use a generic OST. You can't beat the iconic manga spread but whaddaya gonna do.

15 years or so ago at an anime con, the animation director of OP told a friend of mine who was translating for him what One Piece was. She asked if I wanted to know, and I said no. But unless he was messing with her, the animation team has known for a long time.

Since we're posting edits of the scene…

Oh man, that was fantastic. Memories playing when Oden narrated what they found on Laugh Tale, man that was perfect.
I hope Shanks and Buggy get to go to Laugh Tale, just as Shanks said to Roger he would 1 day.
Also, I'm calling it now. When Luffy finds One Piece, he will be laughing exactly like Roger is.
-
Men, that was so good. Hearing memories, all of them laughing, the genuinity of Rayleigh or Roger's laugh… it gave me goosebumps. Top 1 favorite moment of One Piece anime <3

! I mean Jinbe shows up in 976 just before the tobiroppo debut (977/978).

This image made me want to ask, despite how tough Roger showed himself to be and how much he smiled on the outside, that do you guys think that in Roger’s last year alive when he was with Rouge, that he might have looked onto her as like a motherly figure more than anything else when he was coughing up blood or other reasons he might wanted to have sought comfort from her, and maybe even received words of reassurance from her if became a little afraid of losing her or for something else?
