Can anyone know why they don't do more games for Fox, Metroid, Kirby, Mother, and F.Zero. On the Gamecube and 64 they all had good games, and mother in Japan was fairly popular I imagine. I never really understood why Nintendo didn't just try to expand there IPs more..it seems to me after the gamecube they stopped trying.

Forget Mother, where the fuck is a new Custom Robo game?
-
Fox because they don't know what to do with the series, they have done the first game 4 times now.
Metroid is in the middle of a revival, it's slow down was caused by the death of it's original producer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpei_Yokoi), the Nintendo pride of being outdone by Retro Studio by pushing Ninja Team into doing mother M and failing, and just indiference of the japanese market at the franchise.
What are you talking about Kirby, we get a Kirby game every two years like clockwork. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kirby_media#Platform_games)
Mother because it's a complicated series, it's creative force, and intelectual owner, is Shigesato Itoi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigesato_Itoi) some weird artist/copywritter dude who just is ok with what the series did. Also NOA isn't willing to release Mother 3 because they don't know what to do with the Magypsy, and are afraid of all consequences.
F-Zero is a mistery.

@Cyan:
Forget Mother, where the fuck is a new Custom Robo game?
The custom robo games for gamecube and DS had extremely little impact on the market to be really worth it. Heck, until tonight I didn't know there was a DS one. The Gamecube one I did play, it was kind of lame compared to other similar games like Armored Core.
-
@Cyan:
Today's music is an F-Zero medley from checks notes the guy who did the music for Daytona USA, holy fuck
Frickin' Takenobu Mistuyoshi?! (fangasms)
First Daytona USA, then Ridge Racer, now F-Zero? One would just think that he's drawn to racing games.

There a source on this, or is this speculation?

There a source on this, or is this speculation?
Pure speculation, but at this point, it is the most likely reason. Can't change them, can't remove them, can't leave them as it is (as they should) so they don't commit to anything.

I don't know, seems rather auxiliary.

I guess the other factor is that it was released way past the GBA era.

How 'bout Chibi Robo?

Today's post features the trailer for R.O.B. I decided to go back and see how many characters were formally covered. Not trying to say we'll see a new face as soon as they're done, or half done, but the pace is 2-3 per week. (so 2.5).
There's 19 weeks left, 19 x 2.5 is roughly 48. Unless I counted wrong, 44 existing "entries" remain.
[hide]
(excuse the spanish names, i was too lazy to manually make this myself)
[/hide]So all of them will be covered just before the game's launch window, which seems deliberate. Order seems arbitrary, though.

Smash Direct on Monday, 4PM. Twenty minutes long.
Twenty minutes of Bandanna Waddle Dee
At the 19 minute mark Akira Toriyama will walk up next to Sakurai and say "Goku will never be in Smash Bros."

Is this for real or it's just a excuse for make a Waddle Dee joke?

Is this for real or it's just a excuse for make a Waddle Dee joke?
A Waddle Dee and 420 joke.
Mostly Waddle Dee.
-
Wait, so are you jokingly saying there's a direct, or is there actually a direct? I don't see anything online about one happening
-
Yah, I wasted like an hour looking. Gamexplain does this job for me. I could not find evidence of anything.

Checking the unconfirmed stages list, the weirdest choice is Pac Maze, leaving such iconic stage out (for now at least), but it maybe be to initially feature the same ammount of content for the third party characters? This is supported by the lack of Windy Hill Zone. Other possible choice, is that it was one of the stages that "used" the features of the 3ds to give certain info only to the player, like changing the ghosts to blue only for you, or the coin counter of Golden Plains. Who knows how much importance sakurai gave to those features in his mind.
I find it unlikelly that we won't get a new Xenoblade stage, I'd like something from the creepy white continent of Xenoblade X.
I'd like a Miiverse stage with either the greatest hits or a system like Splatoon 2 with the editor in game. Greatest hits/curated artwork would lead to the least ammount of overhead tho, so I'd pick that one.
Other than that, I remembered what made Hanebow special, the fact that the music came from the stage and tadpoles, just a neat detail, not that it was fun.
I was attonished because Midgar had only two songs.
And that's my overview of the stages with:

Who wants leaks? For the E3 direct I mean.
https://sourcegaming.info/2018/07/28/rumor-august-nintendo-direct-sg-discussion/
I haven't watched it, but did read the posts, these are all about the real leak that happened during E3.
Even with so many things that the poster got right (Everyone is back, Oot Ganondorf, Lbw Zelda, Battlefield mode, list of advanced techs, the Inklings moveset, the demo content, Moray Towers, etc) it is weird that he claims that there is a BotW costume for Zelda.
Considering how right he was with everything else, I guess it was second hand information of Zelda having a BotW inspired palette.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
As long as I am in a leaky mood (that came out wrong), this one has been my favorite, not because content, I can't identify half of these people, but of style:
!
! Like, I'd bet that King is K rool, Ponytail is Dixie, Doll is Geno and Rhythm is someone from Rhythm heaven, but the rest?
! If warrior and secretary were one, I'd say Thelma with glasses as the default costume, but separate? Warrior can be anyone, while Secretary is extremelly narrow, with just the 2th in command of the Wonderful 101 comming to mind, Old Man I'd dare to say Heihachi.
! Also, Archer? We have like 3 links with bows, 2 pits and sheik who I remembered that she changed her final smash with link. Oh, Decidueye, I'd guess. With Secretary+Pokemon opens a few other choices, mainly Tsarena, combining her style with the executive secretary from Agretsuko. Or maybe is a literal secretary bird and is a Joust character.
! The rest I'm through, but I'll say just out of gut feeling Prime Ribs: Porky in a bowser sized spider mech, Mech: Custom Robo, Folklore: A Miko style character from a NES game that I can't remember, and Warrior: Simon Beltmon.
! Nevermind, Secretary is obviously Isabelle. -

New music. Galaga Medley by Yusuke Takahama
-
Smash obsession acting up. Galaga showed up without an icon, with the star fox stage (the boring epileptic tilting one) the practical interpretation is that like golden sun final boss music in metroid stages they are going to place the music in a thematically tangent stage.
Or they keep it with the bandai namco music already in the PAC land stage.
Best case scenario, galaga stage.

Notable difference between this time and previous times is the fact that every veteran got revealed off the bat.
Meanwhile, Brawl and Smash 4 also had a dripfeed in terms of how they revealed veteran characters. Like, for example, the reveal of Sonic for Smash 4 was significant and took place in between the game reveal and Rosalina.
Also worth mentioning is that the line graph for Brawl goes from the beginning of the dojo but fails to account for five characters revealed almost a year prior to that. As a result this graph trivializes how agonizing the Brawl wait was from reveal to release.
-
I also want to point the difference in timescales. This smash went from reveal to delivery (and with the switch strategy they can't miss the december release or else even sakurai's head is on the line) in the time that brawl went from "there will be brawl" to "look a trailer!".

[/hide]–- Update From New Post Merge ---
This week’s topic is “Presentations.” When you have an idea, you can’t implement it without being able to convey it to somebody else – say, a partner on a project. You can’t just directly connect with somebody through something like telepathy or a cable. It’s difficult! So, to “present” something is to help people understand your idea.
For example, Smash Bros. – particularly before release – is the kind of game that has a dense presentation. The reveal video at E3 was about 20 minutes or so; I wrote the script for it, of course. There really wasn’t anything special about its production, writing the script would eventually boil down to this:- Write out the video’s elements in bullet points.
- Separate everything into segments.
- Write everything out in sentences.
- Edit according to what I wanted to accomplish.
To put it simply, I tried to work from larger concepts to smaller ones. After that, the teams in Kyoto and Tokyo worked on their respective parts, we shot the live-action segment, and Nintendo took care of the editing.
In Smash Bros.’ case in particular, though, that wasn’t it – we had to record segments of the characters fighting as well. We wanted to put a lot of work into this part specifically, so the viewers could enjoy it.
A CG company called Digital Frontier produced the CG parts themselves; though, we couldn’t subcontract them to do everything, of course. I wrote the “plot” first and would check in every so often after we had handed production off to them.
It takes a lot of different people to make a presentation like this come together, you know! Yeah, quite a few. Even for a game director, it’s a considerable number of tasks to undertake; development is pretty serious. Half the role is acting as a producer!
Even still, presentation is essential. Typically, we’d leave that to the public relations team, and I’d continue to supervise things here and there – yet, I’ve found that how we did things this time around worked best.
When it comes to games though, simply making them just isn’t enough. A game’s content and its publicizing magnify each other: even a good game can be nothing if people don’t know about it.
To that end, presentation relies on “tempo,” in a way – it can’t be something in which information trickles out slowly. However! Tempo isn’t the speed of the presentation, either. If it takes a bit of time for the presentation to get around to the info, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing!
The real question is: how do you maintain interest without fans becoming bored? I think that’s something one really has to take into consideration. If a presentation is entertaining and can maintain the viewers’ interest, it can be long; but if it isn’t those things it won’t be good even if it’s short!
In Smash Bros. Ultimate’s case, the number of game elements directly correlated to the amount of information we had to share. A lot of work went into the game, so of course there were a mountain of things I’d liked to have shared, but in the end, I needed to be straightforward and trim off all the unnecessary tidbits. In reality, the number of hours that went into each individual fighter is immeasurable, so there’s a level of attachment to all of them. Even so, each character’s introduction was only but a few seconds! To that end, I considered what might be interesting to the viewer, and balanced things out.
For instance, when working on a game’s design document it’s best to be as concise as possible, right? That’s important! The goal isn’t to just reduce the number of sentences though, it’s more about whether it reads easily and interestingly or not.
To be honest, Smash Bros. Ultimate’s design document is somewhere over 200 pages! Only looking at it, you’d think, “wow, this is pretty dense!” But if you read through it you’d find that each page’s heading is only one sentence; there’s more of an emphasis on drawings and photos, so you’d be able to get through it pretty quickly. During the actual presentation, each fighter had a brief explanation about their abilities, but nothing more than that. During production I based everybody’s instructions off of the desire for them to be easy enough to understand that anybody would be able to parrot them back.
Presentation is the relationship between tempo and interest! If you ingrain that principle into your head, you’ll naturally be able to cut out pointless things! So, if you have to make some kind of presentation, check yourself!! -
Today not only we got a featured assist trophy, but look at that stage. An unconfirmed stage returns!

Updating the missing stage list:
This image is the ones confirmed:
https://i.redd.it/f34romvxbtd11.png! Series wide:
All Battlefields and Final Destinations: We are at 85+ of them, don't see the apeal of 4 more.
! Almost confirmed: (These are IN but we don't know the version, I'd like a new iteration, or a combined version)
Flat Zone:
Pictochat:
! Yay:
64:
Peach Castle: Yes please, no similar pinball like stage exists
Kongo Jungle: Isn't this the one closest to perfect attendance?
Melee:
Brinstar Depths: Kraid deserves this!
Brawl:
Pirate Ship: Yes please
3ds:
Pac-Maze: Ignore the ghost mechanic sakurai, and let it come back!
Retro Mute City
Wii U:
Wooly World: It grew on me, I find it charming
! Remake: (I'd like a new iteration of these stages)
Melee:
Pokefloats: Rather than the sharp models, something more baloon-like, and more recent mons.
Icicle Mountain: Retro-it
Wii U:
Miiverse: While just a battlefield, I want a "best messages ever" theme on the background
! Hmm:
64:
Mushroom Kingdom: Kinda like it but I won't miss it.
Melee:
Yoshi's Island: I die too much in the middle part, so I have no love for this one, but it's pretty.
Fountain of Dreams: I put it in here after my wish of not being burned in torches, It's another battlefield with mirrors on the floor. It looks pretty tho.
Brawl:
Mario Bros.: Didn't like it, but I guess it's important.
Hanenbow: <no comments="">3DS:
Rainbow Road: There are many racing stages.. But this one is cool.
Dreamland
Wii U:
Pyrosphere: Liked the enemies, not crazy about ridley, but it was a nice large metroid stage, without rising lava/acid/kraid/floor
Gamer: With the hazard toggle, it could be a cool floating platform and a varied configuration
Windy Hill Zone: whatever.
! Nay:
64:
Planet Zebes: It doesn't do anything that binstar doesn't
Sector Z: it doesn't do anything that Corneria doesn't
Melee:
Rainbow Cruise: too simple of a traveling stage
Mushroom Kingdom: If I have to pick, I'll pick 64's or mushrommy kingdom
Mute City: Of all the racing stages, I'd rather have retro Mute City, or Rainbow Cruise. It's just like Port Town Aero Dive
Brawl:
Rumble falls: why was this a stage?
3DS:
Golden Plains: It is not too entretaining.
Paper Mario: I'd rather a better paper mario stage.
Wii U:
Jungle Hijinxs: the core mechanic was a miss, and the new DK stages deserve a new one without an unfriendly gimmick</no>BTW: R.O.B.'s background in his character page. It seems like it is a placeholder. He's the only character without a home stage, If you squint it kinda looks like Pictochat, but pictochat doesn't have that texture:
You show the fighthers by Series: https://www.smashbros.com/en_US/fighter/series.html
and if you compare:
! vs Pictochat's Background:
!
! His background imagE:
vs any other fighter's background:
TLDR; R.O.B. should get a home stage.

Stage distribution. There is a mistake, they missed Pirate Ship.
The sparcity of new stages makes me wish for a few more. At least 8 beyond these.

Direct next wensday.
-
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
99% sure another newcomer will be revealed. But I'm sure the meat is Sakurai talking about modes, maybe more stage reveals, a word for online play, etc. etc.
-
-
During the Direct, you can see burning pictures of K. Rool and Goku behind Sakurai.
-
Let's start with the worst case scenarios:
-
A delay:
I find it very unlikelly, as this game has been in development since the last DLC of smash for, keept many of the same team and assets, and probably are working on top of the porting framework that other WiiU->Switch game have used.
Also, a delay with the current release schedule would leave december completelly barren of 1st party games. -
Something I don't like:
I can live with a few that I hate, a quick look at the reddit gave me a couple of loathsome ones:
! Wavedashing and L-Cancel, because the most pure measure of skill is APMs.
Master Chieff, because Cloud shouldn't be the most undeserving character forever.
The old scenarios for Battlefield and Final Destination, because 85+ isn't enough.
! And a few from my twisted imagination:
Smash Tour
Tripping mode
List of deconfirmed characters -
-
omg I was expecting a Nintendo Direct, not an actual Smash-specific direct.
At the very least I expect a ton of info on single player. We got a lot of stuff on character changes and stages and items during E3, the logical thing would be to focus this one more on modes and the like.
-
Tripping mode
that could be worth a laugh/drinking game. Remember those crazy modes in Melee like fixed camera or only allowing A and the control stick to be used?
-
Hype Levels rising…..Dangit, now I have to go media dark that day not to be spoiled.
-
10 am works great for me, its hours before work :D
-
Sans from Undertale!
Oh wait, he is already in.
-
Personally, I'm hoping that KaizokuJinbei's leaker turns out to be true, just because the movies he described sound mighty entertaining.
-
Good news. Once the direct comes out we should probably be getting a new character reveal. King K. Rool seems like the most likely newcomer. Unless they decide to add someone crazy.
-
-
Predictions for Direct:
Geno, Banjo & Kazooie, Shovel Knight, Dixie and Custom Robo revealed as assist trophies.
Chrom and Sigurd revealed to be the new characters because Sakurai thinks there aren't enough blue haired swordfighters.
Goku rejected in favor of Popeye and Superman.
K. Rool stuck as Mii costume on grounds of the actual character being "too portly."
-
As a joke, fine, whatever… but being serious? I really don't get the people who legitimately think Goku should be in this game...
-
Oh sweet I am off that day too
The hypening
-
Popeye is kind of weirdly important to the Nes story, can't remember the details. Not saying that he should be in, but he makes more sense than goku or cloud or master chief.
-

Basically, Donkey Kong was first envisioned as a Popeye licensed game, but the rights fell through so Mario was made to replace Popeye, DK was Bluto, and Pauline was Olive Oyl.
But I agree, if the pop culture floodgates are ever opened for Smash, Popeye oughta be included.
-
As always my dream reveal would be Isaac (with Felix as an alt).
But what I expect would be the reveals of way more realistic characters. Let's say 2 completely new (K Rool and Dixie in the same trailer) and 2 echo (Octoling and Dark Samus). Maybe a teaser about ARMS characters in the end.
If the rumored Simon Belmont is in, I expect the reveal to be closer to the release date.
As for other likely characters (from XC and Pokemon), I got the feeling it's not the right timing. Maybe closer to when the XC2's expansion and Let's Go games are released.
Besides that, I expect the focus will be mostly on the modes (offline and online). I hope Smash Run returns improved and playable online.

Oh, thanks for the tidbit. The Popeye nes game was kind of fun, even if it was 3 unique levels and that's it.
I want the echo motherload, as in, let's reveal as much echos as possible to leave the other 4 months with full character reveals.

Samus trailer today.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
looking at past smash "directs" (the April 2014 one with Greninja, the 50 fact thing, and the final presentation with Bayonetta?), were at least over 30 minutes each. Tweet didn't give a length, but usually these game specific directs are pretty lengthy.
