@Insider2000:
See, I don't mind them so much. I mean, Cinderella and Jungle Book are particularly meh. But Maleficent and Beauty and the Beast? Heavily flawed, but there is so much love put behind them. Just seeing pictures of Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning having a lot of fun on set (and in the second film too), or a lot of the BatB cast being super nerds of the original film and being amazed they have this chance. Like, yes, obviously these movies are corporate shill trying to make money off something not that original. But there's a love and enjoyment behind them that you don't see in say… Pirates 5? I see these movies the same way I see Beauty and the Beast on stage in a high school. Is it anywhere near as good as the original? Of course not, but I get to enjoy someone else do their own take on a movie I love. I already do that with Broadway.
On a different subject, I don't think the Alice movies fit in this bundle. They aren't 'remakes' or 'revisions' of the original movie. If anything, the first Burton film was what the novel "Into the Looking Glass" was. ...Despite the second movie being... named "Into the Looking Glass"... These movies just make my head hurt.
And Pete's Dragon remake was better than the original.
I haven't seen Pete's Dragon yet. I wanted to see it, but after watching Jungle Book I feared I'd have the same reaction. I'll give it a go, though. I happen to love the original movie, I can still sing all the songs.
I don't mind when they do a completely different take on an older movie or Disney property. I loved the original PotC movie. Maleficent isn't a remake; there's some new ideas there. Also, I know I'm not the target audience. They're making these for kids who don't have any clue what the history is and what I think doesn't matter. If I had kids right now though, I'd want to show them all the originals first. It pains me that kids are growing up not knowing the majesty of high quality hand drawn animation. :'( Yes, I'm biased. and old, possibly.
@Cyan:
Jungle Book gave us Christopher Walken singing dixieland jazz on an album with Dr. John so it wasn't a total wash.
I thought that was awful, personally. >.< Bare Necessities remake was also awful. Wish they had left the songs out.
