The Gamecube controller support for Switch was a mistake.
Apparently, the update was only meant to allow compatibility with some 3rd party Wired USB controllers, and this allowing it to also read the Gamecube adapter was unintentional and surprised Nintendo themselves.
Expect this awesome feature to be patched out in 3… 2... 1...
-
I mean, if it works why the fuck would they remove it. That would just be a low move.
-
Right, this would only f*** over their most faithful fans. People who bought their stuff for ages.
-
rushes to try it out before it's gone

Yeah, but this is "Discontinue the Virtual Console in order to sell Classic Mini Consoles nobody but scalpers can get and RENT you games monthly for paying for our internet" Nintendo, so….

As much as I think the various branches of Nintendo are dumb and suck at making free money, I think this is a bit of a conspiracy you've cooked up. They're more than likely just way behind schedule on their infrastructure and emulation support (like their lack of promised online services).
If I had to guess a dumbass excuse for disabling support, it'd be "well those controllers don't have gyro so we can't let people use them whenever they want and get all scared and confused and gimped in certain titles!"
-
I still feel like it's a complete non-issue given the fact there's zero reason to use Gamecube controllers on Switch. And I say this as someone who loves the Gamecube controller.
-
Well, multiplayer parties. Overcooked and the like. For those games it's very beneficial to have controllers around.
-
Yeah, exactly this ^
New Pro Controllers are $70, Joycons are $80 if you get a two pack. These controllers are expensive. Budget options ARE coming out in the form of wired ones, but those are ~$30 too. I already had 5 Gamecube controllers and 2 adapters thanks to Smash.
Not counting Sniperclips, which I think forces you to use sideways joycons, I currently have three multiplayer games that allow four or more players: Super Bomberman R, Mario Kart 8 and Puyo Puyo Tetris. I haven't been able to do four+ player anything in them since they came out because I couldn't buy controllers, and tbh, sideways Joycon was not everyone's favorite way to play. In Puyo Puyo Tetris, it honestly feels like that method actually hurts accuracy when dropping Tetraminos due to the lack of a D-Pad option. One of my friends that frequently gets invited to these things has big hands too, and the sideways Joycons aren't very comfy for him.
We honestly gave up on playing Switch games when we hang out and kinda fell back on Sm4sh and the like, but this last week we actually hung out and tried Bomberman again and not only were we able to do 5 players this time, thus not necessitating passing when you die, but nobody burnt out on it from the controls. We ended up playing Bomberman all night and had a blast*. As we took folks who didn't have their own cars home at the end of the night, we actually remarked about how this was the first time we'd hung out where Smash wasn't involved at all.
*Yes, the Pun was intended. No, I don't apologize for it.So to sum up:
I just went from having 2-3 controllers with varying degrees of comfort to now having 8 available controllers with options comfortable for everyone without having to spend a cent to purchase new ones, and it had an immediate and noticeable impact on the quality of our gaming.
It would REALLY suck if Nintendo were to just take that away now after having given it to us.
-
Again, I want to reiterate that you are the rarity in this scenario. Most people who want to play Switch multiplayer won't have five gamecube controllers lying around, much less two gamecube adapters.
It's ultimately still a niche situation, and while I'm glad it works for you, it makes no sense for Nintendo to even think about having to account for it.
-
I think it'd hit a decent bit of people, between a large portion of Wii U owners (admittedly not a whole lot of people), and Smash fans waiting for a future release, it'd be frustrating if Nintendo patched out something free that pleased both.
-

If anything I think they should expand it. Most people have a few Wiimotes laying around, and there are a ton of different classic controllers.
They could release adapters for 20 bucks each and most people would pay it.
-
Releasing adapters is tougher. The Gamecube ones have an existing adapter that connects by USB, so it really might as well work. Wiimote adapters, though? That's asking for a whole new product to be made.
-
Yea, let's also get adapters that work with N64, SNES and NES controllers, because why the fuck not.
Guys, remember this is a business. If they release a new console to work with controllers that have gyroscope, better dual sticks and a specific button set-up, it makes no sense to keep on banking and relying on people to use older controllers that are not what people designing games have in mind. It's why the Gamecube controller thing is a happy little accident, but ultimately an inconsequential one.

I guess, but classic controllers are still on the market. It'd be a shame not to be able to use the nes/snes classic controllers for whatever virtual console releases the Switch does end up getting.

Oh, I'm not supremely upset about them removing it. I'm basically in the same mindset as Fool.
I wasn't expecting it nor was I of the mindset that it was a feature the Switch needed necessarily. Even when it comes time for the inevitable Switch iteration of Smash, I fully expected them to either finally drop support for the Gamecube Controllers, or for it to be the Wii U situation again where the adapters ONLY work for Smash.
This update allowing GameCube controllers to work is just a really neat pleasant surprise. It's true there are games that can't use it thanks to the button layout, but there are a good chunk that can, plus this would mean GC controllers are a lock for the next Smash since it's become common for Smash games to have fully remappable control schemes.
Basically, If we never got it I wouldn't have been upset at all. Now that we do have it however? It's gonna sting a bit when they take it away, and I do 100% expect them to take it away.

I wonder, how much hype this game would have without the two previous successful entries? The lead up while not bad would has been underwhelming.
-
I mean, the game is looking pretty awesome, and dual audio is most welcome. The only thing that pisses me off is them yet again promising future DLC and selling an "Expansion Pass" before the game is even out.
-
Looking at the trailer, I get hyped, and on one hand, they have the past success to make me feel confident that it's going to be awesome, but on the other hand I've done most of these things and a fresh view of these things would make me go "oooohhh soo coool" rather than "how many afinity charts are going to be this time?".
My attitude with dlcs is "I'll decide after I finish the game, do I want more, or I'm good?".

I'm trying to avoid footage as much as possible before release, but other than affinity charts what i'm looking after is mainly: fully explorable gorgeous (and different) landscapes, great music that also fits with every area/situation, deep combat (that could be off putting for newcomers but giving all the tools to understand it), and a well paced/directed main story with another philosopher as main reference.
I'm actually pretty pessimistic about it so hopefully it will prove me wrong. I know that most of the team is the same as the first Blade (with also Mitsuda more involved as a composer), so maybe i'm just jaded.

Nintendo Switch is my first Console (not counting NES classic) since my N64 and so far I wasnt a "real" gamer just a casually one in the past. Therefore I don't know anything about the Xenoblade franchise at all or about newer games in general. After haveing watched the whole Nintendo direct the most important question for me was not answered: What kind of battle system is used? Turnbased like in classic jap. RPGs (Chrono Trigger etc.) or something different? For someone who doesn't know anything about that Xenoblade 1 this Nintendo direct was not informative at all even though the story sounds very cool.

First, if I have to compare the battle system to any other game it would be FF12. Second, the story is not connected to Xenoblade 1.
-
Bandai Namco has 3 Switch exclusives to be revealed early next year.
-
Maybe it's to late for me to comment about the Direct but I have to say I'm genuinely surprised there are not Rare Blades linked with Amiibo
-
Miiverse is now officially dead.

It's like most MMO battle systems, your character auto-attacks and there are special abilites with a cooldown, you can combine them to combos, there are elemental affinities, chain attacks and you can switch weapons by pressing one button.
-
Okay, who was the idiot that had the idea of putting Sleep on the poll?
https://mynintendonews.com/2017/11/08/heres-the-results-from-the-kirby-copy-ability-poll/ -
Maybe they will give a "dream kirby" ability, like a stand who watches over you, to make it do something.
Or go the jiggs rest route.
-
I think it is funny you say, whom was the idiot, but apparently three different regions all agreed that it was in the top 5.

Thanks for the information but MMO battle system doesnt tell me anything. I had preordered it anyways but I have no clue what I should expect. It will be a surprise and I hope a good one.

An MMO battle system is what I just explained, everything after calling it one.

They were all Troll Votes and you know that!

That's pretty obviously I mean Mara took the number 1 spot in a Shin Megami Tensei popularity poll despite being known for nothing besides being (one of a couple) of Penis looking demons.
-
I would have complained if Sleep was not an option to vote for.

People are speculating that Nintendo has two or more killer apps coming out next year. One is obviously Pokemon, but what else could be coming? Smash Bros? Animal Crossing? Wii Sports?

There's a new Fire Emblem game coming out on the Switch next year, but there's been zero news about it, so…
-
I'm expecting another direct early next year that will line up a bunch of stuff they have planned out for the year much like they did this year. I suppose they'll be expecting the third party support to pick up and continue next year too
-
A reddit member apparently gave a bunch of info about upcoming Nintendo Switch stuff
! -A Switch port of Dragon Ball FighterZ is in the works and will likely come out in Fall/Winter 2018.
! -Soul Calibur VI is in development for Nintendo Switch (alongside PS4 and PC). Link would return as a guest character on the Switch version.
! -There has been pressure towards Game Freak to get Pokemon’s 8th Generation out in hopes of a release next year. If you recall Pokemon Stars, that is (or was) real, but all it was was a Sun and Moon port to the Switch, used as an engine test tech demo thing.
! -Metroid Prime 4 should have something revealed with some in-game footage early next year from what I’ve heard. I’m hearing that Direct in January particularly. Bandai Namco is developing the game for Nintendo. I don’t know which development studio.
! -There is some kind of new Animal Crossing that they hope to release next year too.
! -The Switch’s Virtual Console will not be like how it currently is known to be like. There is some kind of a subscription service of sorts in the works.
! -Mother 3 is real. According to my source, it was completely localized and playable. The sad thing that I’ve heard is that it is being held back for some reason, which all I know has something to do with not knowing which month to release it in.
! -According to one of my sources, they claim that Square Enix is doing The World Ends With You 2 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
! -Blizzard is preparing a Hearthstone port for the Switch. I’m not sure when this will be announced due to the phrasing, but I heard about this when I went to Blizzcon.Per usual though nothing to confirm any of it so take with grains of salt
-
Hearthstone would be nice on the switch, Blizzard and nintendo working together again would be.. scary.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Was the octosquare demo removed?
Found it, as it is not released it didn't show up in the searches
-
TWEWY 2, eh. In retrospect, surprising that game never got a sequel.

Oh boy, this'll be good. Let's check these out point-by-point:
! > -A Switch port of Dragon Ball FighterZ is in the works and will likely come out in Fall/Winter 2018.
.
! Cool. As this is a fast-paced 2D fighter however, performance matters a WHOLE hell of a lot, so I'll be watching to see if they get this thing running at 60fps
! > -Soul Calibur VI is in development for Nintendo Switch (alongside PS4 and PC). Link would return as a guest character on the Switch version.
! If true I'm picking this up. Not a huge SC fan, but I'm a big enough Zelda fan to be a sucker for this
! > -There has been pressure towards Game Freak to get Pokemon’s 8th Generation out in hopes of a release next year. If you recall Pokemon Stars, that is (or was) real, but all it was was a Sun and Moon port to the Switch, used as an engine test tech demo thing.
! This makes a hell of a lot of sense. I have no doubt porting Gen VII over to Switch has been a thing GF has been doing since at bare minimum, it would help not having to start from scratch with a new engine for Gen VIII.
! > -Metroid Prime 4 should have something revealed with some in-game footage early next year from what I’ve heard. I’m hearing that Direct in January particularly. Bandai Namco is developing the game for Nintendo. I don’t know which development studio.
! Yyyyyyyyyyyyessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.
! > -The Switch’s Virtual Console will not be like how it currently is known to be like. There is some kind of a subscription service of sorts in the works.
! We already know this one. You pay for their monthly internet and you get one free game for the duration of the month, then at the end of the month you lose it and get another. If you actually want to OWN these games, find a scalper you can buy an NES/SNES classic from for a ridiculous markup because we're Nintendo and Fuck our Loyal customer base right in their fucking asses.
! > -Mother 3 is real. According to my source, it was completely localized and playable. The sad thing that I’ve heard is that it is being held back for some reason, which all I know has something to do with not knowing which month to release it in.
!
! Yeah, this list is fake.
! > -According to one of my sources, they claim that Square Enix is doing The World Ends With You 2 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
! Neat, the first game looked interesting. Would be cool if this list weren't totally fake.
! > -There is some kind of new Animal Crossing that they hope to release next year too.
-Blizzard is preparing a Hearthstone port for the Switch. I’m not sure when this will be announced due to the phrasing, but I heard about this when I went to Blizzcon.
! Not really big on either of these franchises anyway so :/ -
Out of all the button mashing fighters, I've enjoyed Soul Calibur the most. I can't wait for it to come out.
-
We have a pretty much perfect English Mother 3 already. I'll buy the official version if it ever does show up, but I'm not holding my breath for it.
-
Expecting the Toads to be the new Minions of the Mario Universe.
