Pink hair and pink tattoo. I like it. I'm still holding out hope that there's a little more pink or purple in his design.
Volume 87 Predictions/Discussion

Katakuri with that hair color and overall aesthetic makes me remember Zebra from Toriko
Also, I absolutely ADORE Cracker´s anime colors
-
Katakuri's hair and eyes are probably that magenta color to match the flower. The rest of his color scheme seems pretty normal and close to what everyone figured it would be.
Oven's the one who's throwing me for a loop. Not simply the fact that he's orange, since Kuma set a precedent with that originally, but that his hair seems to be multicolored gradient!
-
Same hair color. Same scar. Tough guy design overall. Oda and Shimabu are friends. I really think Katakuri´s design is an homage of sorts to Zebra.

Now that we have an only villains cover, will people start matching them up against the Strawhats? I mean, only battle heavy arcs have these kind of covers, right? (obvious sarcasm)
-
Even on volume covers Smoothie is overshadowed by others,
And Katakuri colors are impressive, i was hoping for a more Guts like color scheme but this will do.
Other than that, this cover feels pretty predictable but at least it looks nice. -
This post is deleted!

This is a nice surprise.I like the colors on everybody.
-
kindof messy but i love it. don't like Compote's gatorade hair.
Poor Cracker didn't get the chance to have a decent volume screentime.

There is something in the disposition of the characters that is annoying me around that area where Zeus face is (maybe if there was someone else there… maybe Amande), but I will overlook that since this is cover is giving me everything I wanted (colored hatless Linlin - just love her with that pirate bandana -, BMP colors, BMP exclusive cover).
Just sad Smoothie is not in the front (and Cracker didn't make it). I get she is not playing a major role, but neither is Oven and she is one of the strongest there. And it makes me worry about Oda planning any future redemption for her if he didn't even bother to place her along with the major members despite being one of the Sweet Commanders.

Yo momma's so fat that there wasn't any room in a volume cover for Luffy to show up.
Aside from Volume 83… -
I love Katakuri's colors.
-
Boom, now everyone who bitched about the anime giving Katakuri magenta hair takes an L. The location of Big Mom was about the only part of my prediction that I got right. Cute that Pekoms is way in the back there, trying to be relevant.
-
Manga really didn't do justice to Big Mom Pirates. Can't wait for the colored version.
-
There's too much space on the left compared to the right but otherwise this looks pretty cool. Seems pretty clear the anime team consulted with Oda when they made the character color schemes, these pretty much match exactly.
Also, Pekoms popping out from Daifuku's shoulder pad is just adorable.
-
I'm a little bit sad that Cracker isn't in the image, but it is to be expected. I was disappointed about Vergo and Monet not being in the Donquixote Family volume cover, but at least their exclusuon made sebse since they were antagonists in the previous arc.
-
It's not complete mess type of cover, but it's still pretty boring with no idea behind it (but then again, few OP covers actually have it). I like BM here, but I think the cover would look way better if it was just her and her homies. At least we have "canon" color reference. Also, Pekoms is kind of funny and random Oven is random.
-
My favorite part is ready-to-kick your ass Big Mom.
I guess Katakuri having pink hair makes him fit better into his family of bright-colors and sweets, but I was so sure it'd be black lol
-

All that space and poor Galette has to find a spot behind Oven's hair. Most people won't even notice her, that's some Pandaman-level of placement. But I suppose Oda wanted to keep Zeus' face unobstructed.

Oh shit, Galette's on it? I change my mind, 10/10 cover.
-
You need to seriously play Where's Waldo to find Galette on there.
-
Not a fan of too much pink crew and Bright colors, but they do stand out among other pirate crews. And that pink was the only way to ever make it look like katakuri belongs in there.
WB pirates, red hair pirates, roger pirates, bb pirates look more like actual pirates while BM pirates look like some parody from fairytale.
-
I dunno, I really reaaaaally like this cover! I don't have many more complex thoughts on it right now haha, I don't feel like complaining too much since it has Momma in a crazy action pose & the whole posse with her - loving the Big Mom Pirates.
-
Wow, absolutely in love with this cover and the colour schemes for the Big Mom pirates. Incredible group. Not to mention Mama herself who looks amazing and menacing as hell. But it feels weird to have an all-villain-cover in an arc where the only 101 battles were for Luffy (and Pedro vs. Tamago).
-
I'm well in the "wasn't expecting a villains cover" camp. It's just not a fighty enough arc for the kinds of parallels those usually have. Shall we take bets now if Luffy will take the place of Big Mom or of Katakuri on the next one? It sure does look neat, and it has a nice title as well. I really dig how bright and colourful everything is.
Also, does no one here remember the reveal for volume 85, which also had "a lot of empty space on the left" but we figured out then the reveal image is meant to wrap around into the dust jacket, so shows a lot more on that side than the final front cover will. It looks a good deal more balanced when you crop it like this…
!
…the same way volume 85 did. This has happened before and I'm pretty sure it's gonna keep happening. -
I didn't even know Galette was there until I was cropping a profile image for Oven, rofl.

I think the hero covers might have already come in the form of Vols. 85 and 86 which didn't have baddies (with the ehhh exception of Pudding). Looking back this cover was a long time coming, we haven't seen Big Mom and her goons in a cover since Vol. 83

And the BM Pirates' current whooping of the Straw Hats goes to show, once again, that appearance is never what matters in OP

Who actually looks like actual pirates anyway?

Right before the Doffy Family cover, we also had a good guys only with all the major players, and there still was SHs+allies cover right after with matching pose. I very much doubt it's going to change.

I think you mean right after. The same thing happened with Baroque Works and CP9. So I agree about it happening again.
-
Way more vibrant than expected but being them I'm ok with it
Loving seeing tamago so happy pekoms is back and well
The balance of the upper part seems off but I'm no expert in composition
LOVE katakuri with pink tattoos -

No, I meant we got one good guys only cover before and one right after, with the latter "mirroring" the bad guys; therefore, the last two covers showcasing all the good guys and having no villains is no argument for the next cover not being the "mirror" of this one.

Sorry, I misinterpreted what you were saying abd got mixed up.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Vol. 76 spiral cover. Which is unexpected since I adore that one.

Because most pirates dressed like luchadores, mimes and SS officers, of course.
-
Well….I was not expecting this.
First, I just want to say I love the vibrant colors of the Big Mom Pirates is elevated by the navy blue background. One of my favorite crew designs in One Piece. I know fans like to jump the gun and assume that solid black ink = black in color, but the magenta hair makes Katakuri fit in more as a child of Big Mom.
But what took me off-guard was the fact that this is an all-villains cover.
This creates big implications for the conclusion of the arc because Oda has only done this when there's going to be matchup fights where the antagonists get defeated by the good guys.
The only fight that is going on right now is Luffy vs Katakuri. Does this hint that Perospero and Oven will get their own dedicated matchups soon? What about Smoothie and Daifuku?
Pekoms is stealthy placed in the back and we definitely know he won't turn against the Straw Hats...right?The other big implication is that this pretty much confirms that the Big Mom Pirates' role as antagonists will end after this arc.
It seems like the cake will be Big Mom's "defeat" if that goes according to plan. -
Nice cover. Mont'dOr's blond hair is the only color I didn't like.
-
What's with the random inclusion of compote? Sure, she is the first daughter, but she was literally on two panels.

She is a named Big Mom character that keeps showing up with everybody else. It makes sense.

This creates big implications for the conclusion of the arc because Oda has only done this when there's going to be matchup fights where the antagonists get defeated by the good guys. The Impel Down personnel and the admirals were featured this way on covers 54 and 58 and there weren't any big fights involved with them. It's just Oda's way to showcase in a classic and yet exciting way the current antagonists, big fights featured or not.

That's untrue, Impel Down got the standard Luffy + bad guys crew cover like Buggy, Kuro, Krieg etc, 58th is something similar too (and i's kinda "evil" twin of 13th). The only times all-villain cover happened were Alabasta, Enies Lobby and Dressrosa, all ending with series of battles and Luffy being out of commission for few days. I'm not saying it will happen again, but it will be a precedent.

Luffy is in the middle of both those volume covers though. Same with the Buggy Pirates, Kuro Pirates, Arlong Pirates and Moria's crew.

Theoretically, she is supposed to be important. But not so much in application.
-
Not bad, but I think putting Amande on the far left of the cover would have really helped the symmetry. She's also just as inclusion-worthy as other characters on there imo.
-

As Koliber and Mario mentioned, it's not the same. The only time Luffy is absent from a volume cover is when it's a villains vs heroes pair cover like the ones against Baroque Works, CP9, and the Donquixote Family.
It also explains why Big Mom and Prometheus are angled the way they are while looking to the right. The next volume cover will probably have Luffy in the middle looking to the left.

Now that you mention it you 're both right, althought one common thing between these arcs and the current is the very large amount of enemies that were contained on all of them, that maybe forced Oda to dedicate whole '' Luffy-less'' covers to fit them.
-

I'm wondering about that, it seems the main Luffy's opponent this arc is Katakuri, and the one responsible for calming BM is Sanji. So it'd make more sense to have Sanji/Pudding in the upper part (possibly with Pudding's homies to match Prometheus and Zeus) and Luffy in th middle of the lower part (with Jinbe and Pedro on his sides and the rest of the escape party behind them).
-
People seriously love making them patterns.
-
I wouldn't say it's making patterns here, three occurences are enough to see something's not a coincidence in a fiction, I think. And mirroring covers go well with series of battles between the groups no matter how you look at it. This arc isn't ending in one-on-ones though, for obvious reasons.
