Ohh, that does make sense! I haven't read One Piece in japanese in a while so I didn't know how it was written (I only checked the One Piece wiki for the spelling - that was a mistake, NEVER trust the wiki). Thanks!

The regular kanji for Wano (和) is used when the country is introduced in Punk Hazard, I believe. However, Chrior is right that it is written in katakana in the series at large
The wrong Japanese spelling was actually added to the wiki pretty recently. Thanks for pointing that out!

Does anyone know any news about databooks. When I first started reading we got 2 pretty close to each other but it's been five years since the last. Just wondering if there is any news on that front.

Why so many people think that Big Mom will become nice after eating a cake ?!
The strawhats beat one of her sweet commander. Destroyed her cake, photo of caramel, castle and assassination plot. Stole her poneglyph. AND GENUINELY WANTS TO KILL/SURPASS/BEAT HER.When Jinbe brought her Croquembouche, did she show any gratitude ? No, she directly explained that he will have to give up on life if he wants to leave.
When Judge offered him the power of the Germa's science, did she show any gratitude ? No, she planed to murder them all in a bloody massacre for her own enjoyment.
Big Mom is a true pirate! What she wants, she takes it. She doesn't do compromise.
If she gets the cake she will still try to kill the strawhats because :- she likes bloody massacre
- Luffy made clear that he wants to defeat her
- letting them go would make her crew look weak in front of the entire world
If the cake is ever made, it will play a big role in the escape. But it will still be an escape! Unless Pudding does something to Big Mom memories, there will not be a pacific resolution.
She wants to kill some of her own children, how good should a cake be to turn her into a comprehensive person lol ? -

Big Mom does not know about her illness. She has amnesia after each time it happens and everybody lies about it. She doesn't even know she killed Moscato (and now Opera), and her children hid the body. Giving Big Mom a cake isn't just about giving her something tasty, but calming her down so that she doesn't destroy her kingdom and family. Which would put the Straw Hats in a good light despite being her enemies.
But even then, it's easy to say that is not enough to make up for the whole mess they made in Totland. Big Mom could still blame them for everything getting his messy. Which is why Big Mom is going to inevitably learn about what happened to Carmel and that Carmel was a child trafficker. Think about it. Streussen was one of the two only witnesses of what happened on Big Mom's fifth birthday, and he is now incapacitated after falling off Whole Cake Chateau. Pudding has the ability to read people's memories. Stussy is a member of CP0, and even though she probably wasn't alive 63 years ago, CP0 made dealings with Carmel and probably passed down accounts of her and Linlin down to future generations of their agency.
Big Mom's dream is to create a world where people can meet eye to eye through gigantification, thus attaining world peace. She gained the inspiration from Carmel, who was obviously lying. Imagine how Big Mom is going to react when she learns that her dream and role-model were complete frauds, along with possibly being responsible for cannibalizing both Carmel and the other orphans? It would devastate her, and would perhaps make her realize the faults in the destructive execution of her dream.
Also, Big Mom does not know that her Poneglyph scripts were stolen. She will likely never find out. Brûlée and Diesel overheard the Straw Hats talking about that in Mirror World, but they may end up feeling so grateful to the Straw Hats saving the day that they decide to keep that information to themselves.
Luffy talked big, but trash talk is just trash talk. Everything he said wasn't much more than the conflict between the Straw Hats and the Franky Family in Water 7. And Luffy's priority above all else is on getting out of Totland to ensure the safety of his crew.
The Straw Hats can't escape because there are too many plotlines to resolves in Big Mom's relationship with Pound/Lola/Chiffon, Big Mom not knowing about her illness, Big Mom not knowing about killing her children, Big Mom holding the Baratie hostage, Big Mom likely attacking Fishman Island for vengeance, Big Mom not knowing about Carmel's identity and what happened to her, whatever Pekoms' role in the story will be since there needs to be payoff on his relationship with the Straw Hats and Pedro, Sanji baking a cake because he is not getting away with only making a washed up bento in an island that is literally made of food and to prove his family wrong about the merits of cooking, Chopper's doctoring perhaps coming into play in regards to Big Mom's illness, and assuring the safety of the Vinsmokes. Notice how the Straw Hats are escaping even though saving the Vinsmokes was the whole point of infiltrating the wedding. If they leave without them, the second half of this arc would have been a complete waste of time.
What is the point of calming down Big Mom if the Straw Hats are just going to end up escaping anyways? It would only drag out the arc pointlessly. Unlike Arlong, Hody, and Doflamingo, Big Mom actually started off as a good kid. A naive one that didn't know her own strength, but that was not her fault. Carmel is responsible for enabling her instead of properly raising her. This does not justify her crimes as a pirate later on in life, even if the goal was for her unrealistic vision for achieving world peace. But unlike how Oda portrays other villain, it strongly implies that Oda has plans to redeem Big Mom in a way that is not too different from what happened to Hancock.
And Pudding erasing Big Mom's memories would be the worst arc ending ever.

I am quite surprised that we disagree so much on what kind of character Big Mom is at heart. You can forgive Hulk when he goes crazy because afterwards he turns back into the likable Bruce Banner. But normal Big Mom is basically Walder Frey.
I am all the more surprised that you would compare a declaration of war between a pirate king wanna be and a Yonko to the squabbles between bounty hunters and their targets.
-

I never said that I forgive Big Mom. I never even said that the Straw Hats would necessarily forgive her. I only meant to say that Big Mom herself has the potential to realize some of the faults in her actions and decide to let the Straw Hats go. They don't have to like her, but they need to take advantage of as much assistance as they can get. She's a villain, but a villain with redeemable traits that can still grow under the right circumstances.
Status doesn't change the fact that trash talk is just trash talk. Those rankings are only superficial differences and even though a whole bunch of assassinations were attempted, nothing came through in the end. That declaration of war is nothing compared to how much of a monster Kaido has been built up to be and the promise Luffy made to Momo.
-
Even if she gets the cake, they still broke Mother Caramel's picture, and ruined the wedding and her Germa plans. It's just that at the moment everyone on the island is in danger, I guess after she gets the cake only Strawhats and traitors will be.
I really wonder how Big Mom has that many children (or any) still alive, considering she has killed two of them during the short period of time we have seen her.
-
Saving the day makes up for the cake and the wedding. We can learn more about the Germa plans and perhaps even reach a compromise. And Big Mom's not going to care about Carmel's picture anymore when she learns that Carmel sold children to the World Government.

Kaido gives me a headache, he is already pretty much a walking plot-hole. The guy is obsessed with death and seems to want to die by his own hand. The fact that he has tried to kill himself in every possible way but failed, means he cannot have a devil fruit, because if he is a DF user he has two very simple options for guaranteed death:
1. Jump into the sea
2. Eat a second Devil FruitBut Kaido not having a Devil Fruit would also be wierd because we know he is obsessed with the idea of having a crew composed of only DF users.
It seems unless Kaido is part-fishman or belongs to some other race who can breathe underwater, and he is also one of those guys like BB who can eat multiple DFs (altough i doubt there is anyone who can swallow 3-4 DFs and live), we got ourselves a bit of a plothole.
Someone help me make sense of this please?

Here's a possible explanation. Kaido might like suicide as a hobby, but he wants to go out in a big way. Not just in any way possible. Drowning himself or eating another Devil Fruit would be very anticlimactic. He was envious of Whitebeard dying a glorious death in Marineford. He may have not even wanted to go to Marineford to kill Whitebeard but to actually be killed by either the Marines or Whitebeard himself. Especially if Whitebeard gave Kaido that scar on his stomach.
Falling from a sky island, which is epic in its own way, was a way to kill boredom in a "why not?" way, but I doubt Kaido actually expected it to be enough for him to die after everything he has been through.

But would it not be kinda lame if his fall from Sky Island was for shows and not an actually attempt to die? this creates another issue, was he aware that he would fall onto land? did he purposefully avoid the risk of landing in water because doing so would inevitably cause him to drown like every other DF user?
If this is true then he is simply a poser.

It's not as much him being a poser as much as being bored. It's an intro moment. Not an actual important built-up plot event that is a climactic arc point.

What is the schedule for the new One Piece Magazine releases?

Remember Baroque Works Cover Story ? I really like this one because Oda smoothly retired characters of the story but also foreshadowed the return of some them. In the end only 4 Baroque Works officers are still involved in the story. But in very different ways. Robin with strawhats, Galdino with Buggy, Mr 1 with Crocodile.
Bonclay will probably not come back anytime soon but we still get updates from time to time. What do you think of CP9 ? They are still all there at the end of the cover story. Do you think that Oda has plan for all of them ? Wouldn't it be redondant to have all of them work together again in the same organisation. Do we actually care for Blueno and Fukurou ?

I really don't care for any of them except Kaku and would've been happy if CP9 stayed a 4-man team. But I'm in the minority here. Anyway, look at your example, Mr. 1 came back to story, true, but didn't do a single thing of note and only played part of Crocodile's support in his actions. I fully expect CP9 to return as CP0 members and just fight fodders or something with 2-3 of them actually doing something.
-
The CP9 being back as CP0 was very anticlimactic. In the mini-story they were playing it tough and giving no fuck anymore about the WG, but nope, in the end they'll just keep being the dogs of the WG… SAD !

What more can a guy with the a scar shaped like the flag of WG even be in this world that is not the president?
-
Maybe I should give the CP guys a chance yeah, but I really don't see what Oda could come up with.

Yeah maybe he was just bound to be a goon since the beginning. But the mini-story had given us expectations for character development, right ?

Why would he not have character development?
By character development I mean "changing" and not "having informations on his past or whatever".
He'll probably have some character arc but this is something very rare in OnePiece. The only characters that I can say have had some character arc are Bellamy and Sengoku (because he's chill now).

I was re-reading the Marineford saga, the part with Squard's betrayal and this question came to mind:
Do you think there's a chance that a Straw Hat ally (Grand Fleet or other alliance) may betray Luffy in the future, either to their personal gain or because they were manipulated by someone else?
If so, who? -

There's already been fanart made of that

They have really no reason to think that Luffy betrayed them when he didn't agree to the whole fleet thing to begin with.

LOL. Good one, Kaido. I actually thought about the Tontatta and how extremely gullible they are. That could actually be a major liability, for comedic or dramatic purposes.
Edit: That fan art !!

That's a very good question. I'd say he is an animal given how smart were Carue and Laboon that appeared around the same time. But anything is possible right.

So, if I remember correctly, Roger began on the high seas as a young guy, when he met Rayleigh and they decided to sail. The next bit of information we get is at Saboady when Rayleigh tells the Straw Hats about how Roger turned himself in and got sick. So what I gathered is that Roger didn't conquer the Grand Line until that final year of his life, and as such that means he was only considered the Pirate King after that final voyage.
So, was he considered the strongest pirate before then, or was it finally cemented in that final voyage as PK? If he wasn't the Pirate King until that final voyage, does that mean we need to see Luffy be pirating for years before he finally becomes PK, or just like Roger it can be a few year journey that gives him the title?
My main question is mainly about when Roger became Pirate King, sometime during his long pirating career or only in that final year?
-

Roger began his ultimate voyage into the Grand Line four years before his death, and reached Raftel about a year or so before his death. I'm pretty sure he earned the title once he conquered the Grand Line, since we don't know anything between his meeting with Rayliegh and his final voyage decades later.

I'm going with animal and not mink. Same goes for Mr. 13's partner Ms. Friday. She's just as smart as her partner… its not her fault she doesn't have opposable thumbs to use to draw like he can!
Jokes aside, biggest clue that the Unluckies are simly very intelligent animals and not minks is that they are not antromorphic and look like ordinary animals ... under the clothing...and the tool use.
Good call on bringing up Carue and Laboon. Both have been shown to understand what is being spoken. Carue even went as far as showing his understanding by giving a salute in one scene. And lets not forget the one animal that really throws a curveball in OP world. The one animal that only dresses up but is so smart he learned how to talk.
Of course I am talking about the talking starfish = Pappug

With Sanji's parents coming into play after so long I was wondering :
Do you think the skipped or irrelevant part of each strawhat's origin will eventually matter ?-Who is Luffy's mom ?
-Why does Zoro appear to be an orphan ?
-Who are the pirates that killed Nami's real parents ?
-How did Chopper find a devil fruit ?
-Who are the pirates that abandoned Franky in Water 7 ?
-What did Brook accomplished as a royal guard ?
-How did Jinbe become so incredible ?I can't remember if we hear anything about Robin's father. Do we ?
-
We don't learn anything about Robin's father besides Olvia saying that she would "honor his dream".
I want to know where that abandoned ship Franky rebuilt himself on came from.
-
Oh yeah that's also very mysterious/convenient until explained.
-
-Why does Zoro appear to be an orphan ?
He was at a dojo. I don't see how that makes him seem orphan.
-Who are the pirates that killed Nami's real parents ?
They were in a warzone. There's no mention that they(or Nojiko's parents) were killed by pirates. They were some survivors of the warzone.
http://www.readmanga.today/one-piece1/77/17-How did Chopper find a devil fruit ?
Back in his reindeer days he accidently ate one

Seems he was a scholar and heavily implied that he's dead.

This is true. It's like assuming Luffy was an orphan because of the Shanks' flashback (he kind of was, but he at least lived with mountain bandits and Ace as a foster family).
We don't even really know why he wants to become the World's Strongest Swordsman though. He already had that dream when he arrived and his rivalry with Kuina only intensified it. I don't think that demands an answer since it's a simple enough dream for a kid, but I wouldn't mind delving into that if Oda has a cool idea on his mind.

It seemed to me like he was a prideful boy that got his ego struck badly when he got beaten by a girl. Kuina gave depth to his quest but kid Zoro seemed pretty normal boy that wants to be strong. Although I wouldn't be surprise if we learn his dad used to fight with a sword and that's what got him interested. But I'm worried Oda would then just transform the dad into some mystical fighter or figure of the one piece world.

That's probably all there is to it.
Oh no, nobody needs more secret prestigious origins like Luffy or Sanji. I'd want something a bit more inventive than another "I have a special relative" story. Like Zoro's family being a bunch of peasant merchants and maybe some day where they got mugged/robbed spurred Zoro to take an interest in combat. Or thinking sword swallowers are cool after going to the circus, I don't know.
I don't see any of the Straw Hats having a second centric arc like Sanji for the rest of the story, but something that is a sideshow like Chopper's Monster form backstory in Enies Lobby can work. Or something the scale of Usopp leaving the crew, but of course doing something new that isn't leaving the crew lol.
-
So, Zoro is Kenshin Himura 2.0.
-
He was at a dojo. I don't see how that makes him seem orphan.
I don't see anything, it's the absence of something that makes me think that. Zoro has virtually no parents lol Of course I will thinkt that.

http://www.readmanga.today/one-piece1/140/12Unless I've missed something again, we don't know how devil fruits are created or where they are found. So it does seem pretty mysterious that one would end up by accident in a Reindeer's mouth.
I can't remember the name of the girl in Sheepshead's team, but you could trust your average fellow arlong park member to know how Chopper got his fruit. No need to link me the page lol -
The easiest explanation would be that the previous user of the Hito Hito no Mi died in Drum –> random fruit turned into a Devil Fruit --> Chopper accidentally ate it.
What I really would like to know is how Robin came to eat her DF. That hasn't been addressed at all.

Yeah, having a simple family would be cool just as much as having a "special relative" that everyone knows about.

That's a good question, quite indeed. She had it since she was a young child. Maybe like Luffy she ate it by accident, or one of the kids in her hometown tricked her into eating it.
