The ending nearly made me cry, freaking hell-spawn of incest and bleached hair, I hope he gets castrated, in fact aside from the awesome dwarf uncle, I hope their entire line of DNA is wiped out.

Tyrion is pretty awesome and I would read 7 books of just him.
Jaimie turns out to be as well.
Joffrey and Cersei both deserve terrible fates.
But then, this series isn't always fair.
@Chucklepants:
I think it's just the first. The one there is rather old, from the last cover set. :\
@RobbyBevard:
Probably just the first one, since that's new and clearly done up .to tie into the tv series.
the other one has been a mock up cover for at least a couple years now, and matches the simple straightforward color look of the earlier volumes. Shame they're changing it up, but oh well.
Oh shame. I had the books in line with the second one (older ones). So if I buy this it will be out of placed.
Anyways here's an outline of the chapters of AGoT:

```Fixed.
Oh yeah, forgot that they jumped to that part but never noticed they skipped a chapter?
! Right, the Arya and Jon part while they're watching the spar from Robb and Joffrey and Bran and the fat Lannister.
I love that chapter.
Yeah, it was the chapter where she watched her brothers swordfight with the Lannisters, I think. And it looks like we're getting approximately eight to nine chapters per episode… so we'll likely get up to Eddard V or Jon IV for Episode 3, with Danaerys IV moved over.
@Above: Not sure. Also, Ghost sure has been a well... ghost these past two episodes.
Yeah, they're trying hard not to leave Daenerys' scenes that the in the book seemed to have quite a gap from each other.
! Excited to see Samwell Tarly and the other boys in black.
Well, particularly in the first book, Daenery's story is completely separate and unconnected to anything else going on, its not surprising they'd try and get a chapter of her into every episode, since she's not going to be casually mentioned or show up in any of the other subplots at all this season, and strictly following the book chronology would probably have her being randomly left out of like, episodes 4 and 7 or something.
Yeah. I'm certain they'll be visitting Dany with filler scenes as the season continues.
As for me, I finally hit page 800 on Clash of Kings, and I just finished Catelyn's last chapter. By peeking ahead, I found that everyone pretty much has one chapter left with a few exceptions (Sansa has 4, WTF?) At least I'm reaching the book's climax. :\ Can't wait to start SoS!
Finally watched episode 2. Good ep, I love how this show is coming along. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the struggle scene between Catelyn and the assassin. I do despise Catelyn Stark, always have, but I have to admit that they made her fairly badass in that segment. I was actually like, "Yeah Cat, beat his ass!" No small feat considering how I feel about her, very well done.
Too bad they didn't include Cat's "It should have been you," comment to Jon while he was saying goodbye to Bran in the books. It was rather a character-defining moment for me. Watching CSI: Catelyn was hilarious though. When she found the blond hair outside of the window, I half-expected her to pull a pair of shades out of her bodice and make a pithy remark regarding the Lannister's culpability, lol. ^^ But it did explain things better than her inner monologue regarding the incident.
I did miss Bran's dream not being shown, but substituting it with Lady's death was a nice touch. And speaking of which, that was a rough scene to handle. Her yelp at the end really broke my heart. And yeah, Ghost's absence was noted as well. :\
Tyrion slapping Joffery was a delightful highlight of the episode. Really, I could watch that again and again.
And speaking of which:
Also:
! seriously, spoiler:
! >! This series HAS to make it to book 3 so that we can see Joffrey choke on his own tongue and die. Little bastard. The series must survive for that reason alone.
Regarding the next episode:
! Looks like Viserys is going to be getting "crowned" already?
! Damn, the show moves quick.
! Looks like Viserys is going to be getting "crowned" already?
! Damn, the show moves quick.
! The crowning is practically confirmed to happen in Episode 6, so it won't be happening in Episode 3.
Ah, very good. I was wondering about that, thanks Kitsu. ^^
And in other GRRM news: http://grrm.livejournal.com/212603.html
Glory, glory, hallelujah.
Game of Thrones pulls in another 3 million viewers for its second episode! It's first showing stayed steady in its second week, while interestingly enough, its lead-out program, Treme, only got 600,000 viewers for its season premiere. Immediately after, the encore presentation of GoT drew 744,000 viewers. Good news for GoT or bad news for Treme?
It's definitely good news and will hopefully help it from getting Romed or Deadwooded, but I feel bad for Treme because I'm a huge fan of David Simon.
Finally finished A Clash of Kings. While I felt A Game of Thrones was the stronger book, there's no doubting how strongly A Clash of Kings finished.
(A CLASH OF KINGS SPOILERS AHEAD)
! The bit with Dany in Qarth was Dany's best moment since Khal Drogo's death. I really liked the strange rooms in that building, also SONG OF ICE AND FIRE. I knew there was a connection to the series' title somewhere, and we've found it.
! I can't say I feel for Theon. I dunno his fate, but I am so pissed that he cost some of my favorite characters their lives.
! The Hound and Sansa have amazing chemistry. Sansa's rapid fire chapters at end-book were her most enjoyable yet.
! Tyrion… :( Poor guy. Just when I thought he was getting better too.
! Cat and Jaime in the cellars was rather interesting. I dunno, there's something I really like about Jaime.
! Arya's on the move again it would appear. :) More Gendry and Hot Pie! But what happened with Weasel, I wonder?
! Bran and Rickon's split was bittersweet. I dunno why, but I really like Osha. I hope she gets some PoV chapters down the road. She's probably in my top five favorites. But dammit, Bran's warg powers are as exciting as they come.
! But I have to say, cliffhanger of the book is definitely Jon's. Those last few chapters were extremely depressing to the bitter end. :(
Bring on the Storm of Swords!
I was quite happy when I realized this was airing already. And I was ecstatic when I noticed that Dance is about to be released. Of course, I had to start a reread because I pretty much forgot everything that ever happened in the novels (apart from certain distinctive scenes…).
I must say, I love the first book a lot more now than on my first reading (probably because aGoT was the first novel I read in English that I had not read in German before. Made it not that enyojable at first).
The adaptation is pretty awesome as well. The one scene I can't wait to see is
! the crowning of Viserys. And of course Dany's big finale this season
I just finished the first book. It was great. I'm going to start 'A Clash of Kings' tonight.
Do you guys think the first season of the show will cover the entire first book?
That's the expectation, yes.
The show's been getting GREAT viewership, so that's a good sign. If I'm not mistaken, it's already been renewed for a second season.
If there are 4 books out now(about to be 5), and let's say they do one season a year covering one book each season, they will have five years worth of material. I've read that there have been long waits in between books(7? year wait for the upcoming book). Let's be optimistic and say that the author will put out one more book within the next five years before they run out of source material. What will they do for the seventh year/season if they have to wait potentially several years for more material? Will they write their own ending or something? I realize this is kind of stupid to think this far ahead, but things like this cross my mind.
"Great" is a definite overstatement. The premiere got half the ratings that Boardwalk Empire did last fall, but the good news is that the second episode had almost identical ratings, where you usually see a large dropoff after the premiere.
Anyways, all those sets and locations are very investment-intensive, so it was basically a foregone conclusion that they would do two seasons. I wouldn't read into the renewal as being a sign of immediate good returns. For that, the real question will be if they reach a third season.
My guess is that the TV series and the constant rewriting of AFFC and ADWD are the primary reasons for the huge gap. We know several chapters have been written for TWOW and it can be assumed that the book is going to be a little more linear and therefore quicker to write.
Yeah, apparently nearly all the material in books 4 and 5 was originaly just going to be passed by in a time skip (It was planned as a trilogy after all) but when he got to that point he discovered he was having to constantly reveal things in flashback and talk in depth about what had already happened and it just was not working.
So he had to go back, start from scratch, and do it more chronological and fill in gaps.
Hopefully books 6 and 7 he can do on a 2 year schedule again, since he managed that for 2 and 3.
On an another note, I'm 90 pages into Storm of Swords and it's already better than Clash of Kings.
! So glad that the Tyrells are awesome despite being aligned with the Lannisters. My problem here is that I fear there's something sinister afoot… but this chapter gave Sansa some major points.
Yeah, as I understand it, GRRM had already written quite a bit of material with the 5 year timeskip in place before he decided the gap wouldn't work after all, which he credits as the partial cause for the delay and the immense size of AFFC/ADWD (which were originally supposed to be one book and had to cover material originally planned to be skipped over). As Kitsu noted, GRRM already has some material from these books that has been moved to The Winds of Winter and he already knows how he wants the series to end for A Dream of Spring, so I would like to think that the next two books should be quicker to write as well.
It would be very nice to see the television series survive for all 7 books, but we'll see. ^^
Also. Here's a quick video of editor Anne Groell showing off the completed manuscript of ADWD.
It's….huge!
!
I've spoiler'd it because she reads a few excerpts from the novel…but honestly, I don't think anything even slightly major is revealed. Still, proceed with caution. ^^
To be blunt, shows like these, despite how much I enjoy them don't last 6 seasons.
```Episode 3 seems to have used less material than the past couple of episodes, hmmm. But still, it helped the pacing a bit and gave us some character development.
So, what does everyone think about the differences between book and show so far?
So, what does everyone think about the differences between book and show so far?
The biggest difference is probably the ~+2,3 years of age the children got, but I think GRRM wanted to change that in hindsight anyway.
Imho they are very faithful, the direwolves fall a bit short, that their character matches their owners was hardly explored and Ghost ..kinda vanished on the wall?
The cast is pretty much as I imagined.. the Lannisters are perfect. Even though Jaimie feels a lot less evil than I remember him.
Eddard I always thought of as clean shaven (..probably because beard != cold ) and [serious off] Syrio Forell should have been Sean Connery in his Highlander outfit.
Also The Hound didn't feel that terrifying, but I think he was introduced from Aryas pov..
edit:
Ha!, I knew it, Jaimies motivation for killing the mad king was revealed way way later in the books.
And the wolves are hardly seen at all because they are so hard to train, season 2 will have them with cg.
http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/topic/47746-book-spoilers-changes-from-book-to-screen/
edit2:
actually the confrontation between Ned and Jaimie was way different, that's why it felt so wierd
Ned gave Jaimie some beef about, "when I entered the throneroom you were sitting on the throne, with a dead king to your feet" or so and Jaimie was "and what you gonna do about it",. and not "the king was friickin crazy, no I never tried out the throne"

Yeah, I've been reading that site for all my info regarding the TV series (avoiding book spoilers), but CG wolves better look real though. :O
But Episode 6 needs to hurry and get here. >=)
Wolves are a very tricky issue. The only "good" way to depict them is with CG, but good CG costs a shitload to come up with. Even the best CG character put to film yet (Gollum) required an incredible actor to come to life, and while the wolves obviously don't have any lines, they are significant characters and need to command some emotion. They're sorta fucked when it comes to that.
The two hardest things to work with in film/television are a) children, and b) animals.
Even in the HBO featurette where they talked about working with the "direwolves" I could tell just how difficult a time they were having, because working with real wolves just ain't easy.
So I've just seen the recent Game of Thrones and I'm about past half way into Storm of Swords, loving both series so far. I do find it a bit odd how, so far, Roberts looking like the ass hole and Jaimie is looking like a good guy when at that point in the book it was the other way around. Especially seeing as they are going out of there way to show the reasons why he killed Aerys and skipping three books ahead. Still I don't mind it because it's staying true to the vibe in the books that everyone has their reasons and the series really doesn't have any true "bad guys". All their doing is speeding it along with Jaimie. Plus LOVE that opening, I can watch that all day.

Wow, this episode only covered seven chapters, and bit parts of two of them. We've still got six episodes left and 44 chapters to burn through. At least things are pretty action packed from here on out.
Also, dammit, they made Hodor an old man :(
And Ghost appeared for once!
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Good news! Episode 3 saw an INCREASE in viewership!
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2011/05/03/game-of-thrones-viewing-rises-by-10/91351
wow i still don't know they did also a TV series!!! i'm reading "Clash of kings", the first part cause here in italy the divided it in different books first and second part…I loved "Game of Thrones"...
I'm going to search the tv series on the net..i'll love see them!!!
I just finished Clash of Kings. I've got to say, it wasn't as good as Game of Thrones and at times, it was chore to get through. I particularly dislike Daenarys's chapters. They are mostly boring and seem so detached from the rest of the story. Tyrion and Arya's chapters really held it together for me though. Things picked up in the last quarter for me. I'll be starting A Storm of Swords tomorrow.

Yeah, I had trouble with Daenary's too, because she's so detached from the rest of the plot initially. I ended up skipping them my first go around, then I went and read all her chapters together as if they were their own seperate book, and that worked better for me.
! She starts mingling with the main plot later, and is one of the most important main characters. (Possibly the main character, that we all thought Ned Stark was originally) 1/3 of the main plot points rest on her, after all. (war for the throne, Jon's adventures on the wall, and Daenary's ambition I would consider the three main plots.)
A Clash of Kings was largely building and expanding the world… but Storm of Swords kicks all kinds of ass and changes up everything.
Yeah. Clash of Kings was a chore to read up until the last couple hundred chapters. Though the Ghost of Harrenhal and Tyrion antics were good throughout. Storm of Swords, I am approaching page 500, and it has been strong throughout.
Dany bored me throughout until the end of Clash of Kings with the Undying, but the whole thing with the Unsullied was fantastic.

Oh, sweet. I hate watching shows on the computer, but getting to watch the next episode that far in advance is worth it. Thanks for sharing that.

And thats why you had to read before that could be spoiled for you.

! I always liked how Cat was so adamant about the whole "bread and salt" thing and remembered it just in the nick of time so the Freys had to be hospitable.

```No sign of Jon, Dany, or Sansa this episode. :\ But everything else was pretty awesome. Highlight of the episode was easily the Vale. That scenery is just amazing.
Next two episodes will be awesome, I wager. Bring em on!
Great episode. I'm glad they finished the tournament. Last episode made me think they were going to leave out Ser Loras vs. Ser Gregor joust. Also, the fight with the mountain bandits on the way to the Vale was cool.
One thing though; I think the show spoiled something in the book for me.
! I don't recall the book saying that one of the guys Arya overheard scheming was Illyrio. I am halfway through Storm of Swords, so maybe we find that out later, or I am just mistaken and it was clearly said that one of the schemers was Illyrio.
Also,
! I wasn't aware that Renly and Loras had a homosexual relationship. I don't think I could have missed that. Either I'm spoiled, or this part was invented for the show.
One more thing. Jaime vs. Eddard was a pretty cool fight too. I'm definitely looking forward to the next episode. Things are getting heavy.
Haven't watched the newest episode yet, but:
Nah, it's in the first book:
! In AGoT, Illyrio's name is not spoken, but you can tell it's clearly him due to his weight, accent, and forked yellow beard. The other man is Varys.
! GRRM stated that he intended for both characters to gay, but I don't believe it was something to be made obvious until the later books (the earliest I recall was some subtle hinting in ACoK during Cat's POV of Renly's tourney), but it's been indirectly confirmed by Cersei, Jaime, Stannis, Littlefinger, and Loras since then.
^ Kind of surprised the show would make that so obvious right from the start, though. Hmm. shrug
Ah, I see. I guess I need to concentrate harder while reading, because I didn't get that at all.
! It had crossed my mind that Loras might be gay, but Renly was a surprise to me. I don't recall the hinting at his tourney either, so I guess I really need to pay better attention
Since the first four books in the series were 20 dollars on Amazon, and I got free two day shipping for doing the Prime free trial, I … totally got it.
I can't wait to read A Game of Thrones. I've been devouring books lately so this is great.
