My Hero Academia - Gomu Gomu no Gentle Fist
-
These past chapters have had such an abrupt ending.
-
Fat and Kirishima looks similar.
-
I really want that Rappa guy has a mantis shrimp quirk instead of a bullet punches one.
And slim Fat looks like young Gran Torino. -
Kirishima has been pretty awesome these last few chapters, but this one is the highlight so far. Also that double page spread with the fists going towards Kirishima was pretty great-looking.
-
Man that was a really good chapter. Red Riot is just so awesome.
-
I could have sworn they were going to start a flashback for Kirishima last chapter. But this is good too.
-
This chapter is really good at showing the gap of power between students and pros.
Kirishima went from possibly overpowered to almost fodder in less than 10 chapters. And they just needed to make him face a named villain.
-
I like the twist of Fatgum being able to store all of the shocks that he takes to his body at the expense of his Quirk (and now that I think about, didn't the Noumu All-Might fought also kind of have a shock absorption Quirk?). I've seen that type of power in other places, and it's always cool. I also like how this battle presents three different types of standard defense powers (hardened skin, fat absorption, force fields).
As for Kirishima… meh. I still don't care about his Quirk. Not that I doubt that simple abilities like hardening and super speed can't be written in creative ways, but I don't care for how it's being executed in such boring ways like just getting harder or respawning his armor right after each hit since it's still visually/functionally the exact same thing but with trivial intricate exposition behind it. But I do agree with Cannon about it being nice to see how weak Kirishima is against named pro villains.
-
At first I was kinda meh on Fat Gum copying Choji from Naruto, but I guess it's not too bad since the activation method is different enough (pop a pill vs. get punched a lot). Still, I bet we'll get a scene of Fat chowing down at a buffet in the aftermath, with a line like, "Gotta bulk back up!"
I could have sworn they were going to start a flashback for Kirishima last chapter. But this is good too.
Yeah I'm having a hard time imagining where this'll fit in, now. Having him come back for a third wind in this same fight would be lame after his big sacrifice just happened, and I can't see him joining another fight during the yakuza assault arc…?
So maybe it was just foreshadowing for a flashback that's still a ways off.
-
Red Riot will be a Red Herring for the traitor. You heard it first here folks.

Fat Gum is great. Good chapter!
-
Can someone explained to me what exactly happened this chapter. I'm a bit confused

Apparently Fat Gum's fat isn't just for cushioning impact, it can also store the energy of the impact and release it later. But storing the impact apparently takes effort, and will burn enough calories to decrease the total quantity of fat that he has to shield damage.
Anyway, Fat seemed to be taking so much damage that he wasn't going to be able to pull off his counter attack. Red Riot got the guts up to try shielding another flurry of blows even though it broke his defenses before, and that afforded Fat Gum enough time to convert the absorbed hits into a super charged punch. Which, I presume, he'll be unleashing soon in the next chapter.
-
so Fat Gum is literally a walking Impact Dial
-
OH MAAAAAAAAN, Have you seen the new Illegals Aohige?
! Besides the yakuza avengers, is pretty much given that Stendhal is Stain, right?

Thank you! Now I get it
-
Oh my, when did Fatgum turn into a hottie?
-
He's now Phatgum.
Good chapter. I like Red Riot becoming mentally stronger (willpower) to compliment his physical upgrade several chapters ago.

We don't now for sure until more chapters come out, but there's no denying that there's intentional thematic connection.
His name is also a direct reference to Stain's real civilian name, but not enough evidence for them to be one and the same.I personally would enjoy it if he is though, and we get a juicy Stain back story!

Dear Aohige.
I was browsing 4chan today and I seen some scans. I would dare to say that we have clear answer already for if Stendhal is Stain or not.

Heh, I had no idea 9+ alpha was out.
I only read the manga on Jump+ so I miss out on these off-the-side publications.
I won't see those chapter normally until it becomes included in the tankoubon. And yeah, definitely. That argument is quite settled, lol.
! And these Yakuza Avengers were actually pretty nice guys too. The Tony Stark yakuza even made sure no citizens fall into the hole left open by Cap stealing the manhole.
These were old-fashioned honor bound Yakuza unlike Overhaul.
! But to Stain it's all the same… maggots that don't deserve to live.
! Another example of Stain's values just being fucked up and blinded by zealous fanaticism. -

It has potential to have fantastic moments in future depending if all of world building will constantly pay up.
I know, my comment is generic but I feel passion in this piece of manga, lots of it and I hope it does not burn out as I find most joy in seeing something made with passion.
Now when I think about it I guess I know why I love this arc so much - it reminds me of Monster Assiociation from Onepunch Man webcomic !
There is A LOT inspirations in MHA from Onepunch Man when I think about it.

http://readms.net/r/vigilante/009%2B%20Alpha/4391/1
is it just me or does Stain comes off as a person with a chuunibyou syndrome a little bit
-
"I'm gonna kill you when you aren't useful to me anymore. Yeah, I am saying that right into your face and there is nothing you can do about it."
"Kay."
-
Lmao….The Avengers!
-
-
Holy shit, you're right!
Yazuka Avengers is like the best thing from this spin off so far lol. There's even a Bucky.
-

Everybody breakdance!
-
This huge spiky guy hasn't been shown before???
-
Ashido's appearance was completely unexpected, but very entertaining. It's nice to see her get some spotlight, which is very ironic since she hardly contributes and has some of the lowest grades in the class lol. Especially in the form of being a source of insecurity for Kirishima but without redundantly repeating how Bakugou was a bully and instead with her popular party girl personality.
I liked the touch of everybody talking about Bakugou while only sludge villain mentioned Deku. I'm feeling for Kirishima, and I'm really interested in seeing what gave him hope to keep on pushing.
-
With this chapter I wonder if Kirishima befriended Bakugo mistakenly thinking HE'D been the friend who jumped in during the Sludge villain incident
-
Liking this flashback, and getting a little bit of Ashido in there as well. Between the Stain arc, All Might no longer being a hero, and this flashback, I've been wondering if at one point the whole idea of what a hero truly is will be a central focus of an arc. Without a true face of heroes and a change in how villains operate, I can see that being something that is brought up at some point in the story.
So I forget, what is Ashido's quirk? She has never really gotten focus so it's hard for me to remember that.
-
She can shoot acid, hence the name Ashido
-
I hope that big guy will reappear some time in the future, seems interesting.
-
My favorite moment has to be the break-dancing bit. Even the victim was involved.
-
Isn't it the same dude from chapter 57?
! when Stain was defeated and the villains gathered. That huge dude was only shown back then while the other villains formed the alliance.
-
The big guy appeared all the way back in Chapter 57. He still has his radio.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@Count:
Ashido's appearance was completely unexpected
It wasn't to me. Was expecting it ever since the databook confirmed they went to the same school.
-
Oh my….Isn't Normie supossed to be a slang word?
-
Poor Kirishima. He does get down about his less flashy quirk kinda often. Or he laments about it. Him pairing up with Suneater is kinda nice since they have the opposite problems for the most part.
-
Wonder if Stain gets his bandage look from a Team Illegals beat down. Well, if Stain can beat Yakuza Avengers I guess that makes him the Thanos of MHA.
Great chapter. Hori is hyping up Radio Villain-I can't wait. The guy has the marbles to take a fight to a hero's front door. We know he's currently not in prison so either he gave up or trashed the hero then escaped. The guy is a walking game changer.
-
God I love Kiri. My favorite kind of side character.

I hope that Kiri and Mina end fighting the giant villain with the radio later in the series, it would be cool.
-
I didn't think it was possible to love Kirishima any more than I already did.
I was wrong.
(yay for Mina getting a bit of spotlight too)
-

It wasn't completely unexpected for many, the fact she went to the same school as him was revealed in the databook, so we kinda expected to see her in a Kirishima flashback.

Sorry, I don't think I ever read the datebook. And Ashido plays so little of a role that it was hard for me to see signs of when she might become more prominent.

There's a lot of…. interesting facts revealed by that book.
One of the biggest and scariest reveal that the English fandom never talks about is the fate of the fat, winged friend from Deku's childhood.
In one of the volumes, a page was shown saying "Why DID that winged Noumu pick up specifically Deku from that crowd of heroes? Here's a hint" and shows the winged kid, Tsubasa-kun from chapter 1.
Then the databook revealed that the doctor who diagnosed Deku as quirk-less was the grandfather of Tsubasa-kun, and his clinic's name is Tsubasa Clinic. Then later on when "The Doctor" who works for One For All was shown in the shadows, he looks pretty much identical to the doctor of the Tsubasa Clicnic.
So....
The implication is that the winged Noumu is an experiment by the Doctor, who used his own grandson, a childhood friend of Deku, as test subject.
/shudder
I also mentioned in reddit that this may have been a testbed background story for Overhaul & Eri, as their relationship is nearly identical.
It'll be dark as hell if Hori explores the story further when Deku finally comes face to face against the Doc. -

I love how subtly dark it is and the implications that can have for the plot in the future. But I didn't know that Deku's doctor was that kid's father. And you're telling me that doctor might have gone all Shou Tucker? This type of worldbuilding and foreshadowing is positively DELICIOUS. Thank you for enlightening me about this, I seriously appreciate it.
I hope Deku faces the Doc one day, although it technically isn't essential to the plot (right now, at least). Could you please tell me if you know which chapter the Doctor's silhouette might have appeared in?

This is the databook image showing the relation between Tsubasa and his
fathergrandfather.
This is the shadowed image of The Doctor.
And this is the volume page talking about Noumu and Tsubasa-kun
And yes, I agree, this is Oda level of foreshadowing and world building. I love it.
And yeah haha, it's totally identical to Shou Tucker and Nina situation.Edit: Oops, grandfather and grandson. Since it says Doc is the grandfather of Tsubasa-kun and the boy is the son of the clinic, supposedly his father (not shown) is a doctor there, and the grandfather (The Doctor) is the director of the clinic.

Thank you for posting this. Oh boy. It all connects. Nothing beats the satisfaction of witnessing Oda-level lore. This reminds me of when Kuro busted up Morgan's jaw ad gave him the faux pirate capturing credit needed to earn the rank of captain.
The grandfather/grandson correction makes sense. The Doc looks a bit older than in the first chapter, but that's to be expected due to both so many years passing and needing a creepy villain silhouette closeup lol.
I just gained a whole new level of appreciation for Horikoshi's storytelling. Not that I didn't notice other instances of foreshadowing in this series.
