I'm pretty sad they had a chance to name guy Hillbeard, and yet they didn't.

What kind of boring development that would be?
Oda: Here are 2 guys that could expose us to all kinds of interesting information. Think of what kind of crazy shit they've seen. They died of old age, though.
Even having them die to BM would be total crap. We. Need. That. Info.
Though it's always possible their descendants know some of the stories. Which wouldn't be half as interesting. Descendants can't provide first person perspective flashbacks.
That's dependent on whether or not any of the protagonists WANT to hear those stories. I mean, look at Brook. He's 90, and though he spent 50 years of his life trapped in a giant fog on a boat, there was 38 years where he was actually alive, and could have crazy valuable info about the world from nearly a century ago. But no one, not even Robin, has bothered to ask him about it.

Because his past experiences most likely won't affect the plot in a big way. His experiences are reduced to quick comments, like when he mentioned he knew of Germa.
Should these giants have a knowlege of something interesting, like the location of a RPG or a secret treasure, or basically anything, we're bound to hear or see it.
Just saying, it would be a lot of wasted potential.

- The names of said former Giant leaders are also a bit different in each version. For the first one, he is called "Yorle Fallbeard" by MS, "Waterfallbeard Jorl" by JB, and "Beardfall Jorul" by VIZ. The second guy is named "Yarle Mountbeard" by MS, "Mountainbeard Jarl" by JB, and "Beardhill Jarul" by VIZ. (So in other words, MS messed up the order of the surnames and given names, and VIZ swapped the order of the two words that make up their surnames.)
The "-beard" names aren't part of their actual names; they're nicknames. They are introduced as 山ひげのヤルル (yamahige no yaruru) and 滝ひげのヨルル (takihige no yoruru). It makes the most sense that way anyway; they got those nicknames based on the shape of their beards, not the other way around.

Yay for Memorial Day, I can get these done early again~ Seeing as this was a dialogue-heavy chapter, there were a lot of differences today.
- Mangastream has Linlin say "Are Mommy and the others going somewhere?", making it sound like she's talking to the pair of people with her about her mother. Both Jaimini's Box and VIZ make it clear that the woman there is her mother, as Linlin is directly addressing her as "Mama" (and in VIZ, she also calls the man there "Papa").
- MS has Linlin's father telling her mother, "Quit crying already!", which makes him seem pretty insensitive. However, both JB and VIZ instead say "Don't cry yet". What's more, MS mentions "casualties", implying that Linlin has killed people at age 5, whereas the other two translations use "destruction" (JB) and "damage" (VIZ). In fact, Linlin's father in general sounds less harsh in the VIZ version: "Don't cry yet, my dear! After all the damage she caused, exile was a merciful sentence! She was just too much for us."
- All three translations describe Dorry and Brogy disappearing slightly differently: MS just uses "It's a legend", JB says "Or so the legend goes", and VIZ states "They passed into legend".
- Both scanlations have Carmel promising, "I will lead/guide them!" (as in, the giants), whereas the official translation has her say "I will show you the way!" (as in, everyone present), and says "you" again in the next part in a place where the scanlations didn't use any pronouns at all: "I can guide you to a brighter world . . ."
- MS calls her orphanage the "Lamb's House", while JB uses "Sheep's House". VIZ names it "House of Lambs".
- The line from the one kid about "They dumped you here like a load of garbage" is another MS-ism. Both JB and VIZ just say she was abandoned. Later, the line about Linlin giving the bear "a spanky" is another one; the latter two translations use "hit/smacked him".
- When Linlin is crying after accidentally killing the bear, she is saying "Why" in MS, "How weird" in JB, and "It doesn't make sense" in VIZ.
- Both Jaimini's and VIZ clarify that Eyri (the one whom Linlin tried to smack a mosquito off of) is one of the Giants, which MS did not specify.
- In both scanlations, after asking everyone to forgive Linlin, Carmel calls her "a kind girl". The official version has her say "She only means well!"
- The official translation also has Oimo refer to himself in the third person.
- MS has another giant tell Hajrudin "Fight with yourself!", with the implication of 'I'm not gonna spar with you, do it yourself'. However, the other two translations use "Your true opponent is yourself" (or something similar in JB's case), as a way to tell him he needs further discipline. Also, the two former Giant leaders call him by his full name, Hajrudin, in MS, but use the nickname "Rydin" for him instead in the other two versions. (Or maybe that's the name of the trainer? ¯_(ツ)_/¯)
- MS just has them say that they've come to call on the children "of the village". In JB and VIZ, they explicitly say they're inviting the children from the House of Lambs.
- After proclaiming that they're celebrating the birth of Prince Loki, MS also names three others: Rold, Gold, and Balg. Jaimini's rolls all three into one: a lord born in the village, "Goldberg". VIZ, meanwhile, has two names, like Sandman said above: "Rodo" and "Goldberg".
- The name of the young Giant girl who was explaining traditions to Linlin is different in all versions, too: "Gerth" in MS, "Gelz" in JB, and "Gerd" in VIZ.
Stephen mentioned in the OPP manga recap that, while Jorul and the other I can't recall offhand are spelled with a J its still pronounced with a Y, in reference to the Viking term Jarl

Hey guys, I just thought about something…
Remember that in the island luffy spent his 2 year training he befriended 3 animals (a gorila, a lion and a crocodile). Could it be that, besides the gorila themed attacks that luffy uses in gear fourth form (for example the kong gun), there will also be attacks that are named after that lion and crocodile? Could those attacks be used in gear fifth and sixth (or gear reverse :P ) ?

He already did a Leo Bazooka in gear fourth, in regards to the crocodile, maybe?

Never really noticed the absurdity of him sailing 50 years alone. His mind definently would have shattered by now. Makes alot more sense why he's a pervet though. Even more absured is him not finding away to overcome his situation and instead was saved by luffy in a couple hours.
I see why he called BM young lady, hes almost 90 i always looked at him as late 60s. I guess caramel is dead though. She was like 80 60 years ago but i guess she could be like dr Kureha.. for some reason I thought we would see caramel this arc but i guess thats inly true in flasback.

@E7x:

His ship was derelict & had its rudder broken, not to mention the matter of his shadow eventually being stolen.

Those are not surnames, but their epithets. Just like Teach is Blackbeard, Newgate is Whitebeard and Whateverheiscalled is Brownbeard. I am curious as to why Stephen chose those translations, but calling them Mount/Mountainbeard and Fall/Waterfallbeard seem to fit the "beard" themed characters better.
-
Here was my criteria that I looked at:
-
The epithets have a nice rhythm to them in Japanese, they're not too long (the same # of syllables as shirohige/kurohige [WB and BB]). So I wanted to present them as portmanteaus with the same rhythm and length for each. Therefore "Waterfallbeard" and "Mountainbeard" would be out, they're too awkward and long.
-
If they ended in "-beard" it would be better, since it matches the string of -beard characters. However, it's not crucial as there isn't a direct link between all those characters, just a thematic current. And while they are technically pirates, they're obviously vikings and the whole "yohoho avast" piratey style of a Blackbeard/Bluebeard type connection isn't there, which also makes it less important. Or should I say, there's less value that would be lost by not having it end with -beard.
-
Once I decided to do a portmanteau, with waterfall it was either going to be "Waterbeard" or "Beardfall," and of those two, the latter makes it clearer that it's referring to a waterfall, and it makes more literal sense too (a beard-waterfall, a beard-fall). So once I decided on that, I went with Beardhill to match the pattern.

Man what an age we live in!
Thanks for the thought process Stephen.
-
^My thoughts exactly!
Thanks for the answer, Stephen. That's the kind of process I love to know about.
-
I'd still prefer names ending in -beard, to keep with the usual way they are used, like "Fallbeard" and "Mountbeard" or "Hillbeard", but understanding your reasons is also cool. Thanks for the heads up, Stephen!
