Samurai Jack holds a special place in my heart, so I am REALLY looking forward to this final season. :)
Jack deserves a proper ending.
My goodness, Jack, you look positively Jedi.
At this point all he needs now is a metallic black arm. With a cannon and a crossbow.
@The:
Just watched the episode when Jack and the Scotsman first met. He's still as awesome as I remembered. There's a chance he might not show up in Season 5, but at least Jack learned how to use firearms from him.
An Adult Swim promo shows the Scotsman.
!
My Scotsman boi with his gatling gun leg upgrades! Time's been good to him.
I can't think of any other recurring character from the old series besides the Scotsman that is not Jack and Aku.
I still wanna see the Samurai Wannabe again.
Since it's 50 years… maybe that baby from Season 4 finale could be an axe weilding adult.
And there's the Gaurdian.. although I don't think he's going to be explored or touched upon again.

Yeeesssssss. . . .

Scotsman was the only major recurring character, though there were a handful of minor characters that appeared briefly in more than one episode… but never as a repeat main focus.
Lack of continuity was the biggest weakness of the show... so much so that aside from Jack getting savvy to Aku's tricks later, Jack slowly accepting that he'd never get home, and the Scotsman episodes, they can mostly be seen in any order and it makes no difference at all.
Retirement home Scotsman will kick our ass any day of the week, things are looking better and better.
Posting some afterthoughs of Season 1-4
Finished rewatching the whole show, and boy was it a ride. It helps that I vaguely remember watching it as a kid, so it came to a surprise to me how much variety there was. Like, it somehow felt less about Jack trying to return home and more about the vast adventure to get there. The settings in particular were either fun or just desolate and shrouded in mystery and lore. Because of this, it's really hard to pick a favorite episode. Besides three pretty bad episodes(worst one being the Demongo episode) and Season 4 oddly feeling weaker that 1-3 despite the scale/spectacle of certain battles and really good production values, the show felt consistantly good with its artsy attempts in seemingly random adventures. Then again, I'm easy to please and don't quite mind the episodic format if it means exploring a variety of ideas.
Fav episodes I guess
-Jack in Space: This felts like a really Dexter's Lab episode and the parts with the bugs in space were really cool. I especially liked how space itself was a black void(no stars shown), which is sorta accurate if you've seen recordings of spacewalks where there is sunlight in the planet's direction.
-Jack and the Three Blind Archers: Earliest episode that really showed the craft of future ones that goes all out with silence and good sound design. That scene where Jack trains his senses was really dragged out, but effective.
-Jack and Scottsman: This episode I felt should annoy me, but Scottsman quickly became a charming doof that works really well with Jack's humble demeanor. I especially liked the setpieces in this one. The construction of the bamboo bridge and what was waiting and the end of the bridge was really peculiar to me, since it's a backdrop that's never touched upon… and I guess this is the first episode that made the show's world all the more mysterious.
-Jack and the Farting Dragon: So many good scenes in this episode, despite the really goofy premise. The visuals inside the dragon reminded me of the those seen in "Jack under the Sea", but with better production values. And that's another episode I really liked for its visuals.
-Jack remembers the Past: Just a touching episode that's really sad. I mean, I guess it would be a dull one otherwise… but I really liked when the episode opened with Jack coming across what was once his home, and the visuals gave enough hints to tell you that before it was confirmed by Jack himself. Pretty neat, considering I'm always trying to figure the settings out.
-Jack is Naked: One of my favorite episodes overall. It's a really good original attempt at Alice in Wonderland, and I'm a sucker for these.
-Jack and the Haunted House: Another top episode. Terrifying concept that could have ended much MUCH darker. The flashback visuals sent a chill down my spine, and the final fight with the ghost-ink-demon-dragon-thing was quite unique. My favorite moments was when Jack was faced with the girl's supposedly dead parents in that room. The way that whole scene starts and escalates in the middle of the situation so dire really added to this one's atmosphere. Maybe this a cliche horror ep, but I really enjoyed this one.
Hmm. Seems like my favorite thing about the show is well… the art direction. So I'm really looking forward to see the team pull it off again with their current level of craft.
Wow, it's almost time for the final season to begin. I tried catching up with all the episodes, but it's really one of those shows that's hard to binge watch because of the pacing and the self-contained nature. But I did rewatch the highlights: the Scotsman eps, Birth of Evil, the bounty hunter-focused episode, etc. Think I'll watch the one with the blue guardian who shows a version of future Jack and the last one with the baby before the premier. Really looking forward to the end.
I'm bingeing through the show right now. I'm in the middle of season 4 and it's great rewatching some of my favorite episodes (Jack vs the Shinobi, the Princess and the Bounty Hunters, Aku-infected Jack, everything involving the Scotsman).
Less than 15 minutes. This is almost surreal for me.
Oh shit .
Jack is the most well-adjusted person in the universe.
Jack has the most well-adjusted helmet in the universe.
I am the Paul Lynde robot.
Okay. That was fucking lit!
What a grand return this is.
Great stuff. I was afraid that most of the premiere's plot would be given away in the previews, but that action scene with the robot assassin was a really fun surprise.
Amazing. The 13 years was well worth the wait. They weren't joking when they said they were making this more mature.
That couldn't be any more perfect! God I want to rewatch it again…
I love how this ep was both deadly serious, and also had a magical scatting robot. Oh how I missed you, Jack.
Ep 1: Jack deals with PTSD and also this robot asshole sings a sword at him.
Did… did that robot just fight Jack with the power of Jazz Flute?
The Jazz Scat Robot was easily the best part of the episode.
Though I wonder, how's Jack gonna find his sword? Since y'know, that's the key to Aku's death.
Great comeback after 13 years!
Genndy has done it again.
Jack, I missed you so much. :)
Saw the new Jack. Geez. Great start so far.
! I do wonder who is the identity of the masked leader. I feel it might be a character Jack has met before… maybe that one princess from the bounty hunter episode.. though I'm not certian.
! Also like the inevitable return of Mad Jack... and. Some confirmation that Aku is actually still around rather than ambigiously hiding in the background(or just not there anymore)
! One gripe I guess... I felt like the bgm was out of place in several places where you'd think there would not be any music for the sakes of emphasising silence and sound effects. Like, it sometimes tended to sound like generic cinema music. Not sure if that was the creator's intention to make Jack's return seem more cinematic, or something that was added post production due to investors/whatever.. but eh. It wasn't enough to ruin my enjoyment.
! The moments where Jack was halucinating were great. The concept behind the daughters of Aku was disturbing and makes me ask questions to... how??? And I loved that the show still managed to keep its sense of humor. The pacing was kind of rough, but it atleast presented the important players for future episodes well enough... so..
! Welcome back. Jack.
! I was honestly going to type like.. a sentance. but i wrote a mini review.
! edit: OH YEAH. Return of the ending song! I WAS SO WORRIED they'd not use this rap in this series, and I was so glad they used it!
Those blue alien-dog-reindeer things were so cute!
! very interesting start. The trailers on CN kinda showed off most of what happened in this episode (mainly, Jack's despair and his haunting of the people in his time - I loved the river scene), but I didn't think those girls would be Aku's daughters. I liked that it was ambigous to when they grew up - it could either pass in some span of the 50 years normally or their demon blood could mean they reached adulthood in a fraction of time.
! Scatting robot was exactly what you'd expect Aku to send. Someone equally dangerous and goofy. I think he was voiced by Tom Kenny? The fight was all over the place (rock monsters, moving blade), and it was pretty awesome. Especially when Jack seized his weapon at the end.
! Also I knew the mother was voiced by Grey DeLisle/Griffith. Sounded just like Azula. :P

Really?! When I heard the mom's voice, Tara Strong kept popping up in my head.

Hehehehe it sounds similar to her!

edit: to avoid confusion, the "High Priestess" is the mother in this context
Whelp, that was definitely Samurai Jack allright.
Lol @ this edit:
!
This first episode definitely didn’t pull any punches, and it actually made me feel a little dread about what’s going to happen to Jack.
! The scene at the river was pretty unnerving, especially as the chorus of lost souls screams their one word of despair while the cascade of falling leaves turns into a river of their decaying bodies. Pretty freaky stuff.
! It’s also sadly ironic how Jack, with his feelings of failure for the people of the past, stopped himself from saving the people of the present when he had the chance. His destroying the robots in the beginning and Scaramouch were no longer acts of heroism or even vengeance, it seemed only like Jack’s anger and taking out his frustration the only way he can.
! Scaramouch was a pretty fun villain, which helped keep this episode from being a complete downer. Though I thought the phone call to Aku kinda took something away from the cult that was worshiping him. We already know what he’s like, of course, but from the tone this first new episode was setting, I think it would have been better to keep him as a specter, an ideal that these Daughters of Aku are living up to, before reintroducing the audience to the real, somewhat more mundane deal.
! Apparently Jack is due to kill his first human sometime soon, most likely one of these assassin girls after him. (I have the feeling that, even if he originally killed those bounty hunters from XLIV, it’s been written off that he just knocked them out cold.) I really wonder how he’s going to handle the rest of them if the thought of death is still on his mind.
For those curious, here's the cast list for the episode:
Jack: Phil LaMaar
Aku: Greg Baldwin
High Priestess: Grey Griffin (Grey DeLisle)
Jack's Father: Sab Shimono
Jack's Mother: Lauren Tom
Scaramouch: Tom Kenny
Additional Voices (probably daughters/cultists):
Grey Griffin/Kari Wahlgren
And I can tell Tara Strong is voicing one of the daughters from the commercial.
! Though I thought the phone call to Aku kinda took something away from the cult that was worshiping him. We already know what he’s like, of course, but from the tone this first new episode was setting.
! Actually, I found that Aku-esque and funny; the wacky jazz robot has a better way to directly contact Aku than the cult that pushes out girls just to fight in his name.
! Actually, I found that Aku-esque and funny; the wacky jazz robot has a better way to directly contact Aku than the cult that pushes out girls just to fight in his name.
! I still think they wasted the tension they built up with that creepy idol worship. For all we knew, he could've gotten even more deranged and we would have had to wait at least a week sitting on it before finding out the truth. But one phone call and it's obvious; even if he didn't speak it would have been better.
! I will grant you, it is funny to imagine Aku not knowing who's calling because he still uses that touch tone-style phone he used before.
! Actually, I found that Aku-esque and funny; the wacky jazz robot has a better way to directly contact Aku than the cult that pushes out girls just to fight in his name.
! I'm with Shift about Aku's presence. It really looked like they were going for a slow burn in revealing Aku, which could have been really effective in emphasizing Jack's PTSD and building up how Aku might have changed since Jack is obviously so different fifty years. It's sort of like how we haven't seen Blackbeard's post-timeskip design yet in One Piece, but we keep hearing about all of his big power plays one after another and we're left in anticipation about how much this guy has intimidatingly grown (both figuratively and literally lol) since we last saw him. The Daughters of Aku worshipping Aku's idol does a great job of building up this sense of dread about what Aku may have been up to after all this time. And the best part about all of this is that if Aku still has a humorous side like his old self, which he probably does, the impression of seeing that for the first time this season impacts us much more if we've been constantly hinted to fear him throughout the season beforehand.
! The phone call was funny though.
Additional Voices (probably daughters/cultists):
Grey Griffin/Kari Wahlgren
Huh, haven't seen Grey DeLisle use that pseudonym in a while.
Wow what an episode!
! Love how jack is in survival mode. Reminds me almost of mad max. The scenes of his ptsd were really haunting. Even Scatmam saw just a small glimpse of it.
! I feel like scatmam was sent specifically to destroy jacks sword with his tuning fork dagger. He originally wanted a epic sword duel between the two of them. When he noticed jack didn't have it, he tries to call aku immediately. Luckily for jack, aku doesn't know who's calling him. It's a shame he was defeated so quickly. But since he's a robot there could be more of him.
! I feel like the the samurai on the horse In jacks visions are him as pure evil. Basically him just giving up and allowing aku to win. I wonder how long they will continue with "crazy jack." Also what will be the factor that snaps him out of it. I'm so excited for the next episode!
New episode boys and girls~
! and we start with aku. <3
Ugh, I missed the first minute or two.
Ugh, I missed the first minute or two.
That is very, VERY unfortunate.
! Aku got fully revealed. In the funniest way possible.
Oh dear god they actually did it.
Yes. Yes they did. I have to admit that even I was a bit skeptical.
@Count:

I started the episode midway through a conversation between him and some scientists. I saw him acting as his own psychiatrist if that's what you're talking about.
Anyway, the rest of the episode was fantastic.
holy shiiiiiit
! What better way to start an episode than with Aku? Greg Baldwin doesn't hit the highs of Mako but imo he comes pretty close. The therapist Aku was proof enough of that, and that Aku's as Aku as ever.
And like last episode proved, he doesn't know Jack lost the sword.
! Really dark stuff with Jack's spirit self arguing with him. He's ready to give up and consider the whole thing pointless, a failure (even going as far to suggest seppuku…!) but there's a part of Jack that refuses to give up.
Then the girls ambush him and send him running.
! Holy shit that temple sequence was intense. For a minute I was thinking we were following (Ashi) around the part of the glowbug, but it was showing a combined scope of all of them. Jack BARELY escapes them, and gets into the fight of his life in the coffin room.
Then upon escaping, he silts one of their throats, killing her. Expected because of how only one of them has stood out so far, but this will definitely come back to haunt Jack later. And the sisters aren't done yet, if the next episode preview is any indication.
! so fucking stoked.
Episode 2
! Seeing Aku was great! But feels out of place now that the show has changed tone
! Don't get me wrong i think the show so far is awesome.
! When jack was in the coffin reminded me of kill bill 2.
! After reading meta marios post the Aku part is dark comedy, so I guess it's not so out of place.

! You missed how the beginning of the episode literally starts out with Aku waking up in bed with a night cap and puts his flaming eyebrows on like clothing.
A lot of people seem surprised that happened and I can't understand why; the inner conversation Jack had guaranteed it was coming.
A lot of people seem surprised that happened and I can't understand why; the inner conversation Jack had guaranteed it was coming.
It's not that we're surprised as if we never conceived it as much as it's surreal to finally see it in the series after the tone of the first four seasons. And it could've easily had some sort of copout.
