I ordered from Funimation's shop and mine just shipped.
Lucky. What shipping method? Did you order both? They might be waiting on one or something. My order is still processing.
-
yep, looks like mine's shipped. Funny timing, I suppose.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Looks like Zephray posted while I was writing, I ordered both. Yours will probably ship soon.
-
Guess mine will ship soon too especially because I ordered them with two day shipping
-
Ah. It did ship. I'm just being antsy because HoG is one of my favorite specials. Can't wait. Hopefully it gets here by release date.
-
Mine still haven't shipped, I guess it may be because I ordered them with two day shipping
-
Will get getting the set today! Very excited. Will let you folks know what I think of it tonight.
-
Post office attempted delivery this morning, but I wasn't home. Guess I'll get it tomorrow.
-
Got my copy just now. Watching the TV Special before work and the movie after work.
-
Just got my copies. The poker chips are on point.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I just finished watching Heart of Gold, and I must say that I really liked it. Lots of really fun parts, parts of it kind of reminded me of the Professor Layton movie.
It doesn't have any bonus content included with it, which is fine, but a part of me expected something from FUNimation in that regard. -
I just got back from Walmart, they actually had One Piece Film Gold on both bluray and dvd. Bluray was 19.96 and the dvd was 17.96. I got the bluray.

Juli Erickson (Tsuru and Kokoro) has moved away from Texas and has been replaced in the My Hero Academia dub so it looks like we'll be getting another recast in the Dressrosa arc
-
Finished watching Film Gold. I really like the dub voices for both Koala and Sabo. Both voices fit their characters really well.

Darn! I really enjoyed all of her work thus far.

Also probably a slow release for season 9, if Sonny can't record Present Mic due to vocal strain I can't imagine he'll be doing any Usopp

My Hero Academia is recorded on a week to week basis, so these things affect it more strongly than One Piece. Unless Juli's retired from VO completely, she'll probably be flown in to record her Dressrosa lines. One Piece is recorded months before release, and recording sessions can be scheduled around things like Sonny's illness, so it will do little to affect season nine's release if anything.

Season 9 was recorded last year, as evident by a tweet from Chu's actor, so Sonny's illness won't affect this season or any other seasons due to what I just mentioned and the scheduling of recording and releases as mentioned above

Yeah, I made a presumption. My Bad. He said on twitter that Present Mic sits in a weird place for him. His replacement is fine, the one I really miss is Alex Organ's Aizawa.

I knew there were complications with his Academia role but this is the first time I'm hearing about this. I hope this doesn't affect his roles in Dragon Ball Super and One Piece too much.

Same, does anyone know why Alex Organ didn't/couldn't reprise his role?

Present Mic

I'm assuming Sonny Straight's issue just comes from strain and that it is something that will heal if he takes time off. Hopefully it isn't permanent as he loves his work and we love his work. Considering the roles he usually plays, I'm sure he needs to take time off every now and then.

Pretty much:
Considering the roles he usually plays, I'm sure he needs to take time off every now and then.
And I assume that’s really what the problem was here; this is probably due to the difference between how simuldubs are handled verses their other shows. In past interviews/commentaries Sonny has admitted that a voice like Usopp’s can sometimes be straining (especially with all the yelling), and yet he’s still managed to handle it for all these years. With something like One Piece, where there is a slower release schedule and they aren’t trying to keep up with the Japanese version, it’s easier to work around the actor’s needs. If a character is causing any sort of strain they can make the recording sessions shorter and more spread out, so the actor doesn’t have to overwork themselves. With a weekly dub you can’t really be as patient; the episode needs to make a very specific deadline which is in a smaller timeframe, so you need everything done as quickly as possible. With less breaks between recordings, a character which causes any sort of potential strain can just get worse when you have to do it at a more constant rate.
But yeah, we probably shouldn’t look too much at recasts in a simuldub being indicative of whether an actor is capable of returning for something like One Piece (unless the reason for the recast is the actor retiring); the process for both are different and the types of problems that can occur with a weekly dub may not apply elsewhere.
Same, does anyone know why Alex Organ didn't/couldn't reprise his role?
“Scheduling conflicts” was the reason given. -
GET BETTER SONNY. I hope he returns to voicing usopp very soon.
-
Forgot to chime in about the HoG dub. Good stuff; I love the film. Only a few lines sounded bad to me–and most were in the beginning. I felt like the drunk second mate sounded like a sober person impersonating a drunk person. And the rapping gave me second-hand embarrassment. Olga's voice was higher than I was anticipating, but it worked well enough. Great special; can't wait for more. I've never seen 3D2Y, but I hear that one's good. Hopefully they grab that (or the Episode of Nami) one next.
-
Very surprised that neither of these releases had a commentary track. Or any extras at all, really.
-
Just watched the Heart of Gold dub. Fantastic work overall. The dub improvised a few lines here and there but usually any improvised lines for the Straw Hats always work out well. I thought Olga and her father were well handled as was Madd Treasure. I can't say much on Treasure's crewmates since they kind of suck but he himself was good for a one-shot antagonist. Basically I enjoyed the dub as much as the original when I watched it last year so that's all I can really ask for. I do notice how the younger Straw Hats do sound a bit older and more mature so at least Joel is being careful about consistency.
-
I didn't notice that last part. They sound older now? Huh.
I loved the voice of Mad Treasure. Perfect stuff. Was excited by him when I heard his voice in Film Gold, too.
-
I forgot to ask this back when the voyage came out but how are the bloopers on Season 8 Voyage 5? How far back do they go and how funny are they because I want to know about them but I don't want to double dip with the voyage because I only buy the Collections
-

Not so much older Straw Hats like Franky or Robin but if you compare Luffy and Nami especially to their post time skip performances you'll notice subtle but noticeable differences in their approach and voice. Only subtle but it's there. Chopper is more or less the same I think and there may be slight differences in attitude for Sanji and Zoro but nothing too different there. I'm trying to decide if Sonny Straight did anything different with Usopp or not. Maybe slightly with the attitude but it's even more subtle if he did.

The bloopers were pretty good. It mostly goes back to Season 3 - 5 stuff.

First two episodes of season nine dub are on funimation's site.

The Fake Straw Hats are amazing in the dub. Fake Luffy, Fake Usopp, Fake Robin, and Fake Sanji sounds almost like their 4kids voices in my opinion.
-
I find it funny that Robin's voice actress didn't get to voice a Fake Straw Hat similar to how the Japanese voice actress also didn't. Actually, I think that the entire order for all of the voice actor selections is the same as the Japanese dub.
-

I'm going to have to disagree on the Fake Luffy sounding like the 4Kids Luffy, but the definitely agree with the others. I was actually caught off guard by the fake Usopp, since I couldn't even recognize it as Patrick.
The difference in Luffy's voice compared to pre-timeskip is more pronounced than in Film Z/Film Gold/Heart of Gold. Only time will tell if Colleen will continue to go that route.
-
Oh, man. I'd thankfully forgotten what all the voice actors sounded like for the 4Kids version. Went and watched some old clips. My god, I'd forgotten how poorly acted that dub was.
-
Mayumi Tanaka also gave a kinda more calm, subdued performance but fell back into her normal Luffy voice after the first few episodes.
-
Not sure whether that sounds like 4Kids Luffy or not but it's still funny.
-
So very, very close to getting the English dub of the song New World. I really hope they do it proper justice, or I will cry. I want to let them get a bit further along in the released before I get all caught up on the dub, but I think the release of New World will be enough to make me catch up.
-
Damn. Can't wait to see the episodes. Any ETA On when the rest will be uploaded??
-
Few things to note about the episodes:
-
Mike is in fact back as the ADR Director
-
Chris Sabat does a 4Kids Sanji Impression for Fake Sanji and Luci Christian does a 4Kids Robin impression for Fake Robin
-
Clifford Chapin is credited for the script writing on Episode 518 along with Clint Bickham so Clifford is the newest scriptwriter in One Piece's writing team
-
-
That was awesome!! So glad to have Mike back.
Sabat's Fake-Sanji doesn't sound too much like David Moo, but you can tell there's a serious homage there. Luci Christian is definitely channeling 4Kids! Robin, though.
-
I really want to hear these 4kids impressions, especially Patrick Seitz doing the "i'M the FEarleSs CaPTAin USopp" take.

Seitz is not really doing a 4Kids Usopp impression, he's more so matching Kazuki Yao's performance. It's Chris Sabat and Luci Christian that are doing them for Fake Sanji and Fake Robin

oh .

Fake Sanji and Fake Robin aren't so much trying to pay an homage to the 4kids voices themselves but rather respective corny "Brooklyn" and South-Western accents. A good choice in general because The fake SHs are suppose to sound somewhat menacing in these episodes the 4kids voices of the SHs were just straight up terrible, too goofy sounding or too bland to mimic verbatim.
