The betas have been pretty fun.
Quick overview of all the active combat mechanics.
Doesn't even go into loot/item optimization or builds.

Despite my super overloaded first half 2017 gaming-wise (still working through Tales of Berseria even), I think I'm going to have to buy this. I think it's the setting that gets me more than anything. The medieval/Gothic setting of Souls/Bloodborne gets old fast, but a game in feudal Japan against Japanese demons and warlords? Yes please.
It's also supposed to have a more straightforward story based on many historic figures.
Really dig a lot of their designs but environments have been very dreary in color palette overall it's very dominated by black blue/red.
From what I played in the betas the combat and character customization(including gear optimization) are the big draws that made me put more time into them than even some other games. Level design is a bit standard not awful just not really all that surprising or noteworthy, definitely haven't seen anything that compares to the intricate Souls/BB levels.
Will also say that I think the online component of this game felt kind of more fun to me than expected.
Did a lot of boss rush runs for loot in the beta. Was very reminiscent of playing Diablo 2 doing baal runs.
I still don't have PS+ so I probably won't do online. But yeah the darkness / lack of color is the main downside to me artistically; it's fine sometimes but a lot of games keep overdoing it. Still the gameplay looks legitimately fun so why not give it a chance.
Had to hold off on Yakuza 0 and Gravity Rush 2 because the Nioh beta was so strong I have to get it day 1. I'm so ready for William's weeaboo adventures!
Jim Sterling gave it a 10/10.
I'm pumped for this too, ever since that sweet, sweet shortcut-unlocking in the demo. Hnnngh.
Gameplay, etc., too, though those 12 minutes of technical explanations in the OP make me wanna cry.
Getting good reviews across the board. I am really glad Team Ninja seem to have a winner on their hands with this one.^^
Japanese games on the whole are coming in strong this year. FeelsGoodMan
Anyone already having a favorite weapon they'll probably want to commit to?
Probably going with spears cause it's a weapon that I found very easy to use but I think I'm going to give dual katanas another shot and see if I can get into a groove using them.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Nioh/comments/5rs963/historical_samurai_armors_in_nioh/
also found this kind of neat with the characters actually wearing the armor that is very close to the real one's worn by the historical figures they're based on.(at least if that post is correct)
Alpha left me anticipating.
Beta left me stupid hyped.
I find myself anticipating the end of the weekend. This is an unprecedented phenomenon.
I would have preferred the title being Ichioh so that Nioh could have been the sequel.
Interested in the game but kinda turned off by the pressuring to tell that the game is really hard

The sequel is going to be most likely a Ninja Gaiden game.

It's not that hard once you get used to things…...like being able to die instantaneously by falling into deep water.

Nioh is actually a reference to this confirmed from within the game. Also written with the same Kanji.

While trying to memorize a shit ton of stuff for exams the past week I was having Nioh streams in the background.
The gear and character customizations is fucking amazing. And last night I saw I build confirmed that I already kind of wondered if it was possible after seeing different things that could support it.
I need to hold out 1 more week x_X then I'll become a basement dweller.
Waiting to get paid on Thursday to get this.
I have the game sitting next to my PS4, I even already downloaded the pre-order bonus armor or whatever, but I'm still playing Tales of Berseria and I don't know if I even want to start diving into this game before Zelda comes out. And then Nier Automata also comes out… I wonder if I'll be playing it before April at this rate. Which will also bring Yooka-Layleee...

Everyone drowning in games first quarter of this year is absolutely brutal. I crossed Zelda of my list cause I don't feel compelled to get a Switch yet with so much stuff unknown and don't have a WiiU and it still doesn't feel like I'll ever catch up to my backlog and I'm not a big backlog hoarder I actually generally play everything I buy or at least try to sometimes I drop something because I'm not in the right mood for it.
My money game is pretty weak…..and to make matters worse it's supposed to snow in a few hours so it may be a mess trying to get the game within the next few days.
Well shit. Amazon says "shipping in 1 to 2 months." T_T
@CCC:

Yeah seems to be a lower print run. I've seen it's sold out in many places. So unless one is ok for settling with digital the wait for the next print might take a bit of time.
Well shit .
Nioh is fucking amazing. So much fun also some people have been blowing my mind with what's possible with the combat you can legit juggle single human enemies in the air like in fightings games.
Also the levels design is far better that I assumed. Subquest are basically filler and try their best by twisting and turning existing stuff a bit but you can't help but still notice it's reused from the main missions, areas in subquest are also often very uninspired but like I said that's real filler.
Main mission though had me impressed a few times with the way levels make you navigate especially as a 100% explorer.
It's everything I loved about Souls and MG:Rising with nothing I don't.
Dark, don't be so quick to dismiss the submissions as filler. I did the same until I realized that each are essentially tutorials for either main quests or Twilight Missions.
I used to destroy all those Haniwa thinking they were environmental hazards until WHAT!? Enemies can trigger them too? Now they're my greatest allies. They teach you the lay of the land as well as how to deal with enemies in a fashion that I can only describe as fine-tuned to perfection.
Using an entirely separate currency for items is SO LIBERATING. Souls' currency system has only ever felt punishing.
Souls will (probably forever) be my favorite world in a game. But as far as a game experience goes, this feels far more rewarding.
The online aspects of Souls have always felt cumbersome but here? WHAT STAGE YOU WANT? THAT ONE!? GOOD, GO, ENJOY!
I was honestly afraid when the cavern stage and cave stage felt too similar but then Danjo's Castle BLEW ME THE FREAK AWAY and it's only gotten better since!
ochimusha4649 for anyone interested in co-op.
Wasn't meant to be a dismissal, I don't regard filler as bad especially in a game that shares a lot of diablo elements. But it felt worth noting that there is quite a bit of disparity in the intricacy of levels the game offers as well as stuff just simply repeats a lot. Personally it doesn't really bother me.
I'm in the fifth region currently and I have to say that another weakness is the game has very limited normal enemy variety.
Honestly the game might actually have more bosses than standard enemy types. The bosses though are very impressive. For the amount of bosses they have I gotta say the design has felt incredibly varied I'm saying this because Souls had times where it feels like you fight the same archtype of boss a loooot especially DS2. Bosses have been fun enough for me to return to some of them and actually go for the no damage taken titles for them.
It's really cool to learn the patterns so well that manage to avoid everything. Some bosses have been really tough because of how fast they are and weave between their movesets. Like not going to lie I feel more comfortable with the deliberate pace of Souls it's just less taxing to react to stuff. Nioh sometimes feels like my reaction speed just isn't cutting it to pull some 0 hits taken bosses off. It's good that you can kind of break the game though by building your character in several ways. The game also is weirdly draining to play in a good way. But I always need to take a short break after every main mission.
I think Nioh weakest aspect is the story. You meet so many cool looking well designed characters but very few of them get meaning full screen interaction/time.
That said the historic connection are very cool and reading through some of the background on them is entertaining.
One of the things I appreciate the most is that unlike in Souls where you build your character for one weapon Nioh encourages switching between at least two sets of weapons it keeps things very fresh especially when a single weapon already has so much depth to it.
Also just because I mentioned some of the weaknesses I also want to list what I regard as top notch
Edit: also smithing tip it seems like there is always a small chance to trigger a bonus patronage point when talking to Tome the blacksmith girl on her repeat answers. So if you're tired of just throwing money at her you can just spam the speak button for a while to get free points. It's random though but it does kind of give infinite free points.
Finished the game only 7 twilight mission until I have the plat too.
Super fun ride. Probably not even done after the plat. The loot hunt is too much fun. Probably going to be a comfort game to idle in for me.
Still got most of ng+ as a playground to progress in as well.
Also the plat is perfect with the exception of the rotating twilight missions being needed for it. But honestly I'll take that over all the Souls plats. The bloodborne plat might be slightly better or slightly worse to do not sure actually.

Tried to start Yakuza 0 but then I went back to farming and optimizing shit in Nioh I can't stop the diablo loop is too strong.
6/9 on twilight mission 2 more days till plat....
If you kill a revenant that's on your friendlist you get the entire equipment. So if people are interested in that feel free to add me.
PSN name should be the same as my ap username just every written in lower case.

Check out the Amrita Memories section. I completely ignored it until I noticed it has its own unique challenges (some linked to titles) and provides SOOOOOO much useful information about the cast and setting.
I was like, "Cat clock? WTF, is that the result of a poor translation?" Boom, in the Amrita Memories section. Opening that up explained so much that the game didn't waste superfluous Kojima-like cut-scenes on.
I've never looked forward to no-hit boss challenges but they're actually a great deal of fun here thanks to the game offering you hints and even direct answers on boss strengths and weaknesses such that everything you need to know is available to you unlike Souls which begs the player to either waste time, items, souls figuring it out on their own (I say that as a Souls fan).
AND NIER IS COMING OUT TOMORROW WITH FULL ENGLISH SUPPORT.
Happiness overload.
I did read that entire section basically why I said the best thing about the story are the historical connections concerning characters or events. I even try to make a point to unlock all character notes. It's still lackluster because characters get seldom moments to really shine or for the audience to truly connect with + the whole game could just not be William very little would change. They definitely could have given people just the option of full on customization it wouldn't have impacted the story in any major way.
Happy that Nier is another week away for EU still screwing around in Nioh. Also the nice thing about the no hit challenges is you get title points as a bonus.
Pretty excited about the DLC that was announced for march and april as well. We're getting something around Date Masamune and PvP
It's still lackluster because characters get seldom moments to really shine or for the audience to truly connect with
Do we need that?
I know I don't.
They're real people. If I want to connect with them I'll read up on them. Not to mention the guardian spirit system is a very cool way of learning more about the character and their ambition or lack thereof. The connection should be with what they really did. I don't need to watch a cut-scene showing me who they are or what they did. It's phenomenal how, instead of a DMC, the cut-scenes are characters just talking or literally moving the plot where the game is you being badass.
This is exactly why cut-scenes are killing games. They show us characters surfing on swords one-shotting everything in a room and gameplay proper is comparatively boring. Here you, the player, are given control over the greatest scenes of action and it's so refreshing.
Also the nice thing about the no hit challenges is you get title points as a bonus.
Yes indeed! I've gotten a bunch of them so far. Rather than the youkai, the people are going to be the difficult part. But a parry and bare-handed buff should make quick work of that from what little I've seen.
Do we need that?
I know I don't.

.
If we're talking about needing or not needing honestly I could have done entirely without all cutscenes and thus the lackluster story.
I'm simply criticizing what's there as it is one of the weaker aspects of the game. Does it matter in the end? Not in the least for me the gameplay shines way too much for that. But I don't know I just don't think you can call Nioh's story an achievement in any way.
As for connecting yeah if you create all these cutscenes that you probably want people to watch I feel like making people care about the characters and letting them connect with them is kind of important, or else what's the point. Also building connections doesn't really need to mean more cutscenes or longer cutscenes. It just means the writing needs to be better.
Which is also where I hope they just drop the whole story and a set main character thing with Nioh 2. Let us make Souls style our own characters male and female. Basically don't waste time on that and focus on your strength even more at least these are my current feelings.
Based on Nioh I just don't feel like it's very worthwhile for them to try to improve this approach to story telling.
Again I don't think labeling things like these as weaker aspects of the game is unfair or unreasonable. Of course maybe I come off as overly negative which I don't intend to. I very much love this game because it's strength are fucking stellar especially for a first entry.
Like the whole diablo system fucking blows diablo 3 release state out of the water. The combat depth and possibilities are amaaaaazing. Build diversity and theory crafting for builds has a good amount of depth. Etc etc.
Nioh is an incredibly game but it's also far from being perfect there are so many ways it could still improve. And if it does for Nioh 2 it will easily be instantly and all time great.
They're real people. If I want to connect with them I'll read up on them.
Might get a bit awkward when someone reads up on Yukimura Sanada and finds out that he couldn't really kill 1000's of mooks or that despite his portayal in fiction Nobunaga was not an actual demon lord.
Platted the game still want to play more dammit….
I still want to play period.
amazon has updated my shipment estimate and says I'll get the game March 1st instead of sometime in April! yay!
Really excited for this. Just have to platinum RE7 and Rise of the Tomb Raider first.

And I think it's perfectly intriguing as it offers a rewarding story those who want to go searching for it without completely obfuscating it while putting a focus on gameplay first

You shouldn't take replies so personally :)
You mentioned something you think is negative, I offered an alternative view or way of looking at it.

? Was simply responding to stuff while trying to provide better explanation and also making in clearer that I did indeed dug into Amrita Memories of why I think Nioh story isn't very good. Basically trying to discuss stuff seems I failed? English isn't my first language so I was basically just pondering if some of the criticism came of as more negative or damning than I really meant it. But somehow it seems it got interpreted as me taking it personally, I'm a bit surprised and honestly a bit confused by that but open to suggestion of how it should have been phrased better.

I've been trying to play Yakuza 0 but after 30 minutes I just go back to Nioh and farm more stuff.

I'm close to finishing up NG+ and want to emphasize again that Nioh is actually more Diablo than Souls.
I don't think the game is very challenging unless you gimp yourself like doing level 1 runs or what not.
The game gets really easy if you build your character well and you can break the game in so many ways.

So I got my full farm setup and I can get about 70 million average amrita in the last mission.
Levels cap out at 10 million per new level around 250.
The grind to max stats begins....
ok level 300 now. Having enjoyed being overpowered as fuck for a bit now I think I'm finally done with the game.
of to play Yakuza 0.
Guess I wasn't done after all went at did all the crusher titles.
I never played games like this one except the tutorial in the first Dark Souls, which was already too hard for me because as much as I like video games I am SO bad at then. So I can't say how satisfied I feel right now after finally finishing this thing after like 20 attempts!
By "this thing" I mean the first boss, btw.

Honestly 20 attempts doesn't sound bad at all pretty average, I think that was about the number of times I needed as well during the beta partly because readjusting to the game. Failure is part of those games so honestly it's just perseverance in the end, dying often shouldn't be taken to hard or be something to get too frustrated about ideally nor should people doubt themselves about sucking too much to make it through.
These games can honestly be beat by anyone willing to learn so just have fun with learning and chasing that high of successfully putting your lesson into use.
Also taking a break sometimes does wonders. Good luck further it's one of my favorite games this year so far.
I beat the game after about two weeks of playing (minus the twilight missions and those two final bullshit boss duo side missions. This was a pretty fun game with some great mechanics and level design. Storywise left a lot to be desired since it was basically a glorified cameo reel of Sengoku era characters with our central protagonist being pretty weak and unmemorable. I don't like this game quite as much as the Soulsbourne games mostly because of certain mechanics and the interconnectivity of a big world opposed to self contained levels. Overall, I felt this was a pretty great game and probably one of the best games I'll be playing this year.
Also I'm just gonna post my final two boss fights for anyone curious, not to toot my own horn, but they are amazing fights that blew my mind in what I managed to pull off.

Stopped Clock .
Nobunaga and his wife, BS?
Hardly my friend. I learned to no-hit Yuki-onna early on and THAT was tough for me as a mediocre player.
https://www.facebook.com/ochimusha108/videos/994414957489/
Nobunaga is a push-over though and that effort with YO made this possible in under 5 attempts.
^ bit of a spoiler (not that I mind personally).
Finally got this and currently loving it.
I absolutely suck at ki-pulsing, and the forging system has been too intimidating to look at so far, but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying the game so far, mostly with an axe. Beat Onryoki, Hino-enma, Nue, and Kelley v1 without much trouble, about to move onto Aki region after finishing off the sub-missions in Kyushu.
Not played the game, but I've listened to the soundtrack. It was rather good, but only one song stood out prominently, but damn was it good. Here it is.

I began playing this again because the DLC is going to hit at the end of April. Finished almost all the titles except the Crusher ones for the new mission which spawn several enemies (Gourd, Secrets of the Dead, Hyakki Yagi, etc). Managed all the timer things, Kensei and a couple of the Crusher titles against the dual human fights. To finish out all the titles I'll probably have to change my build.
Which brings me to damn since I stopped playing people figured out a couple new ones. I think the nerfs of course helped to encite people exploring more + buffs making other stuff viable but man love that about this game how much variety to combat there can be.
