How would you even test for the hidden ability on that? Some abilities that have obvious pop up texts or immunities are obvious… but how do you know one with regenerator has appeared?

Wags, remember to not kill the corsola or youll lose the chain (you would notice right away as the meranie won't call for help).
Thanks for the reminder. I've done my reading so I know that, but it's an important thing to note for anyone doing chains. If you don't leave a pokemon of the original species, or at least one with a chance of calling, then you won't get any more calls.

That's my problem right now, haha. There's no way of knowing unless you make use of Trace or an attack that lets you copy abilities, which I don't have. Maybe I should invest…

Exeggcutes have worry seed, that shows the overwritten skill, and resist whatever can happen in that battle.
Mareanie is the hardest to fish HAs for because they want to kill the corsolas.

Cuz Switch totally isn't portable… If not my bad

Been trying chain Hakamo-o from Jangmo-o to see if I can get one with the Overcoat ability. Tedious… tedious stuff. I'm using the Fairy Mushroom thing since every offensive from Jagmo-o doesn't hit affect it, plus it has Spore to test whether or not Overcoat activates. Ended up having to break the chain due to the lack of PP, and being unprepared in general. Guess I should grow Leppa berries.
Anyone have any spare hatched Jangmo-o with Overcoat to save me from this hell?

Considering the Switch is apparently the portable for the next gen (but also the console) they wouldn't be breaking any traditions by having the game on it. And there are rumors….

I don' have HA Jangmo-o but I did trade a black sludge for a Spanish shiny jangmo-o yesterday and he's glorious! Just thought I share

How are you guys wasting turns while waiting for the chain? Growl/Tail Whip/etc? I thought about chaining for Sandshrew, but I don't have anything to check ability right now.

That's amazing, dude! Been thinking of chaining for a shiny myself since it looks really cool, but I gotta see how it plays before I invest a million years looking for one.
Also. I JUST found one. After a chain of atleast 46. Female too. Now I can finally go to sleep.

Adrenaline Orbs. They sell for 300.
Once you use one, it increases the rate of SOS calls. If you use it again and again after the first time in the same battle, it would fail and not consume anymore. This is a good way to make the turns roll for free.

You can rotate pokes, or use items like antidote. If you're not poisoned the antidote won't actually be used, but it will still spend the turn trying.
I wasted about two hours trying to get a shiny rockruff but took enough chip damage over time I ran out of potions and revives.

When that trainer on the third island brought out Alola Dugtrio…I just stared at it for a minute. Okay, five minutes. Nature can be so beautiful.

Just finished the fire trial, I have been changing party members a lot compared to other games.
Team as of now.
Dartrix lv 24
Araquanid vl 23
Drifloon lv 22
Mudbray lv 22
Tauros lv 21
Salandit lv 19 -
Aaaaaand… credit roll. Main game finished. Final team levels:
Decidueye Lv 44
Salazzle Lv 44
Ribombee Lv 45
Sandslash Lv 46
Kommo-o Lv 49
Greninja Lv 54That's actually pretty underleveled for the final battles, but hey, that's how it is when you don't use the Exp Share. Plus it's easy enough to overcome with good type coverage (and maybe some item usage if need be).

Near end of the game now and I feel like there should be more to see before attempting to wrap things up. Feeling seriously overleveled now due to all mon hunting and just not bothering to rush things.

I really wished this game tried to make a story revolving around Team Skull and the whole Trial Captian ordeal. It's definately more fun and interesting than Aether and the Ultra Wormhole stuff.I WAS really looking forward to Lillie's development after she finally changed out of that Aether outfit, but… Geez. Her character I felt took a HUGE nosedive. Every interaction with her was repeat dialogue of stuff she had already said and I could not help but feel extremely annoyed. I feel it was intentional considering she was sheltered and acts like a kid who's oblivious to the outside world. But damn... So annoying. "HEY! I can do stuff! I'm learning stuff! Let me tell you about everything I'm doing! I found this potion laying here in the dirt, you can have it! Here's a full party heal as compensation for putting up with me"
Lille rant aside, The Wormhole climax.. yeah. Like I said about the Aether stuff. This really felt like a concept that was thrown in there mid development. The battles and such definately had this epic atmosphere that did feel tense, but I could not help but laugh at Lillie's JRPG boss squid mother chucking pokeballs. And sadly after that mess was over, I found it really hard to look back and recall that this all started out as some colorful/fun island adventure with other lovable characters, including Team Skull themselves.
So yeah. I disliked how they handled the storytelling approach.

I have to say. This is probably the strangest game in the series as far as monster distribution goes, and this ain't a bad thing. It's just really bizarre. I feel there's alot of liable stuff, but they mostly as a whole got either multiple weaknesses, 4x weaknesses or terrible matchups that don't feel immediately obvious until I realize it too late. And the game sorta encourages you to use them since thier moves decide everything.Thinking about it now, the Professor himself has serious obsession with movesets, and I feel that was more self insertion by the designers when it came to the direction of balance this game has. And I gotta say, I had alot of fun. It was very easy to have a good portion of the team be filled with things that all share a common disadvantage, only to rely more on thier traits, movesets and Z-moves.
And because of this, Alola just mechanically and aesthetically "feels" like a very distinct and unique region that really emphasizes, "showing off your best moves". Gotta love it!
If there's one complaint that I have about this game's world, it's that areas feel a bit too short. And I can't tell if that's me wanting more to explore, or if the areas are indeed very small. Also this one is personal, but I got kind of sick of quick "black screen" transitions, and I felt like Gamefreak could have done more with its assets. Sorta like the scene that showed a bit of the boat leaving the first island, I wanted to see the characters riding the bus and seeing locations outside. Little things like that would have added more to the immersion for me, but eh. I also felt like there could have been more places to surf(besides just tiny pieces of land with a single item on it), or mysterious optional water caves.. but maybe that's all post game.
Besides that, I LOVED the Unova cameos… as random as they are. I screamed when I saw Grimsley, because honestly I thought Unova wasn't getting anymore love.
[/hide]Because of the gameplay parts like I described, I think this is my 3rd favorite gen. 5 still being my fave for being a more focused game that didn't feel inconstant. Followed by gen 2.

[/hide][hide]Yeah, Team Skull were the best part and didn't get much focus. Guzma is an interesting and fun character that never really got his due. He was rejected by the guardians, and thus the society around him, which made him really insecure about himself. So much so that he clung onto the first person that showed him any sign of approval. Him being a bug trainer is really fitting, because bugs appear weak and loathsome, and are looked down upon by all around them, but when antagonized can put up a nasty fight.
I think that there's some massive problems with the traditional culture of Alola that were never explored, since that's what really pushed Team Skull to band together as criminals. The way people talk about them shows that all the islanders insult them, call them worthless thugs, and don't really care about them as people, and that's really against the spirit of this game, which above all others is supposed to be about friendship and bonds. The guardians, and the stuffy traditionalists created a monster among the youth, and yet they are never held accountable for it.
In the post-game, Guzma gets to 'mend his ways' by learning to care about his opponents or something, and Team Skull gets trained by Hau to work rescue, and I guess it's nice that they get some kind of redemption, but it completely skirts around the issues that turned them to evil in the first place with generic pokemon friendship magic.
I recall in early press material, Team Skull were supposed to be kids who had failed the island challenges, anti-traditionalists shat on by the world around them because they couldn't live up to some arbitrary standards. I identify way more with that than the protagonists who just gets led around and thus becomes the best person ever.[/hide]

I think gen II is extremely overrated. There I said it.
Thinking back I had a ton of fun with Silver and have really fond memories of that experience. But when I revisit it, it's a huge pain in the pokeballs, more so than Gen I. Meanwhile, revisiting Gen III or V is just outright fun.
As for this gen, I think it's up there with V as a favorite. Really loved the world-building, and the experience had a sense of freshness and unpredictability that hasn't existed for a long time. Also felt the pacing was on point.
-
II gets a lot of points for having an interesting somewhat dark narrative for the series, and having the best post-game content in the series. It also had a good set of pokes, and introduced a bunch of interesting and now important things to the series, including two types. I think it deserves the praise.
-
Definately agreed with all you've said Wagomu. I really wanted to like Team Skull. I mean! I still do. But I wanted to see what I liked about them more. The game really forced the idea that they were just "bad", which I won't mind if they didn't mention they were trainers that failed the island challenges.
I even felt something out of
! Nanu. Whose's design and laid back personality makes me feel like he was originally written to be an officer that once tried again and again to help make things better, until he became a reflection of the kind of adult he hates(one that gave up and is living with regrets). I wanted so much more out of this guy too.
! but eh. maybe it's postgame stuff. -

What dark narrative? You mean Team Rocket doing random dickery and then fizzling out into nothing?
As for post-game content, it means squat when the pacing of the game makes you waste hours of grinding just to go through a forgettable post-Whitney game, and then expects you to grindfest AGAIN just to get to the conclusion versus Red.
Contributions to the series doesn't mean that the game itself is paced-well or worth comparing to more recent, polished editions. Otherwise, by default Gen I would always be the best for introducing ALL of the concepts that make pokemon what it is.
-
Don't underestimate it. That ability gives you a fast switchout, which gives you a free pivot, and when you put Golisopod back into the wring, you can use First Impression again, for another big priority shot.
Competetively it could be really interesting, yes. But for the story i don't much care for it … so switched it out and i don't regret it.
Mareanie is just the cutest thing ever!! And i agree, it is really awesome and it's wrecking shit left and right with those great poison-moves.
The only thing that sucks ... the evolution does not really look appealing. Couldn't they have kept the look of Mareanie at least a bit? Oh well ... -
Well, I've been avoiding this thread ever since the spoiler warning popped up but since I just beat the main story I figure I can go here again.
…So what's this I hear about the Big Bad's team being difficult to beat? I swept the whole thing pretty effortlessly with Salazzle myself. After three Nasty Plots, admittedly, but hardly any fights in the game even allowed me to set up that much.
Also after spending so much of the game trying to get an Alolan Raichu I must admit I am phenomenally disappointed in it. That thing did not carry her own weight in the slightest and was ultimately replaced with Solgaleo.Yah, Legendaries Only then.
You can't build up your own sex machine, you have to caught it or breed it, as God Intended.
Well. Guess it's a good thing I'd been breeding myself perfect IV Pokémon in various egg-groups back in ORAS then, so that when the Bank opens I can actually send those over to Sun and have some completely legit breeding 'mons. (I mean I also have some hacked 6IV Dittos in that game… but I figured I'd go and get me some completely legit ones so that nobody could ever accuse me of cheating!! Pointless? Yeah probably.)
-
I have gained myself an eternal mortal enemy.
Preschooler Ava… one day I will see you in hell you little bitch.

I just finished this one myself. I practically got into a stall battle with my Calm Mind Ninetails, up until I got hit with Toxic and had to cave and use her Z move. The rest of the team would have been swept, but I couldn't survive long enough.
Vast Poni Canyon was a great area. It felt like the most Pokemon place in the game, if that makes sense. Sucks that I killed the only Drampa I ran into, but at least I snagged an Absol and Murkrow :D
-
Finished the game. Ended up having to box my level 67 Clafeble because I found using Calm Mind + Moonblast very broken and really boring. Plus is kinda got too overlevealed from all the Janjo-O hunting. Also ended up having to box my stater Pokemon because he was getting a bit too powerful too. So yeah, my final team ended up having no Fairy types. The only high level thing I kept was my Wishiwashi because I love this fish so much.
Final Team before the league:
-Vikavolt "OR-Type" early level 40 range
-Wishiwashi "bullied fish" early level 60 range
-Kommo-o "glued plates" Late level 40 range
-Marowak "a numbskull" Late level 50 range
-Exeggutor "ugly giraffe" Early level 50 range
-Minior "comet boy" Late level 50 rangeNo spoilers below. Just describing the moment.
I gotta say. I loved the Elite 4 and final match a ton better than whatever the hell the Kalos League was going for. My team got it really rough during the last parts since I choose to do every single match with no items, with limited recoveries between them. I ended up having to face the last one with a team of 4 since I exauhsted my revives… and actually lost. The second attempt, while better... ended on a clutch. Really fun final match!
Spoiler stuff
! I feel like.. the game could have focused a bit more on the idea of "building your own Pokemon League". Because while I understood that developing it might have taken years, it was hard to get into it once you, "the player" becomes the region's first champion. It felt incredibly shallow. You sit on a chair and then what? What does having the Champion Title even mean for the kids that take it? Never before has the concpet behind it made me confused.

Post Game Spoiler
! If you go through the Elite Four again and sit on the chair, you get challenged by a random person (from a select pool) who apparently want your title.
! Even if it means going against this game's intended canon, it would be nice if the challengers can actually take the seat if you lose
-
! I found it kind of nice that you ended up the champion this time, mostly since it doesn't make much sense in the other games for you to repeatedly beat the champions and still see them sitting in the place of honor. It was kind of cool for you to ascend the throne of Gary Oak, and I think that it makes more sense with the series canon for you, the champion, to be this dude running around with your own agenda, occasionally taking on challengers to the throne.
! I just wish that trainers got stronger through the game (all of them, progressively, instead of just a few after you beat the game first) so that they might actually pose a threat, and so that you can level up better. What happened to that? Ever since gen 2, we had trainer rematches be a thing. -
! I guess the game never made it clear why was the champion title important to the player. Maybe they did and I forgot due the to main campaign being hijacked by Lillie's development for the most part.
! But I admit, I did like that feeling of being the person waiting in an empty room towards the end of the league. But it did feel strange sitting there, pondering what it even means to be the final boss.
! Guess I'll take back what I said when it felt "shallow". It's more ambigious, because as the player… I never really thought about what I'd do once I become champion besides "I want to get this thing over with to access post game, and be free to do what I want".
! Heh. I'll take that.Trainer rematches is a thing that I'd really want back. Although the phone number system makes it a bit dated. Perhaps if it was exchanged with text messages that you can check whenever you like. Also, this is something I've always wanted but.. since the games always seem to emphasize how good you are, it would be nice if you can take up your own apprentice trainers.

Just arrived on Ula'ula Island and
! man, Hau's Raichu crushed my entire team with its Psychic move alone.
Current team:
Torracat Lv 27
Charjabug Lv 27
Wimpod Lv 26
Steenee Lv 25
Passimian Lv 25
Sandygast Lv 24Haven't read this thread since the games got out in the US and I am still slightly scared of accidental spoilers, so I'm not too sure what others think, but this game feels more difficult than the rest of them. Granted, I'm sticking to Alola Pokémon only, immediately turned off the Exp. Share, do not grind besides beating all trainers I see and have my Battle Style as set, but still. I am using potions and revives way more often than I ever have.
Also I was wondering:! I accidently fled from the first Ultra Beast battle (damn you, Wimpod), in the following cutscene it just flickered a bit and then disappeared. I guess that's no different from what would've happened if I actually beat it?
-
! I didn't know Alolan Raichu was part Psychic until Lysanroc bit it. What a weird typing, but a good weird. But it didn't sweep my team. (everyone is ~27)
! Now youtube thumbnails kinda spoiled me a bit on this, but I don't think the Aether Foundation is good news, from Lusamine's overly maternal feelings towards the pokemon and her rather terrifiyng grin in the wormhole scene. Also that f**king jellyfish is terrifying, kill it with fire.
! ps. GIVE ME GUZMA GAME.Also the beginning of the third island kinda annoyed me a bit with its handholding. I tried to go left, just to see what was beyond, but Lillie was like "no player shouldn't you find the professor in the garden"? C'mon, Lillie!
-

-
She gets much worse, so.. try your hardest to get used to her.
I mean, I'm fine with her as a character (I do flock to the ojou-types), but yeah.
-
but this game feels more difficult than the rest of them. Granted, I'm sticking to Alola Pokémon only, immediately turned off the Exp. Share,
Well that's the problem. The game, and the exp given out by trainers, is balanced around you having the exp share on at all times.
It's unfortunate because it breaks the game both ways. It's way too easy with it on and you end up overleveled if you even casually hunt for mons, and its a slow grind with it off that leaves you way underleveled. Last gen had the same problems. (And also when your entire party levels at the same time, you lose out on getting to really know and use and test the individuals.) Black and White had the better solution where difference in level affected your exp and there were juicy audinos… so new things could catch up in level almost instantly, but things that were area appropriate would get almost no experience.
My main solution has been to raise 10-12 monsters and rotate out whenever something gets a couple levels ahead of the rest of the party.
-
The difference in level does affect your exp here. I've seen it while evolving mons for dex entries.
-

They brought it back then? That's good.
Just hard to judge when in the middle island and everything is about on curve, I guess.

My copy only arrived yesterday, so it's only been today that I've been able to spend some significant time with this though I'm still not very far in, just wrapped up the first encounter with the Team Skull grunts. I can already see what people are saying about the increased difficulty compared to previous titles - Teacher Emily's Meowth literally chewed through 3/4s of my team, and I came close to wiping against Ilima (his Smeargle suddenly busting out Water Gun versus my Litten prompted an audible "what the fuck?"). I'm already itching for the point where the Pokemon selection starts expanding beyond the usual early-game fodder, though I was surprised to find Slowpoke literally right outside my door.
Presentation-wise this is so much better than X and Y, not just graphically but the way the world's put together and I'm really looking forward to seeing the later locations further on. Also, being able to not only breaking into people's houses, watch their TVs, and rummage through their garbage, but also lie down on their beds is hilariously creepy.

WHAT THE FUCK!? My Evee evolved into Sylveon! I thought it had to be way happier than that! Dammit, how am I gonna get an Espeon at this rate!? (note: I would normally be fine with this, except my Brionne is already half Fairy, thus I don't need another Fairy type)
In other news: For the love of God, Hau, STOP SMILING!

Remember that, for some reason, affection and happiness are two separate values for some reason. Happiness is earned through leveling up, time spent with you, items used, and some other factors. Affection is what you get by feeding and petting your pokemon through refresh. Sylveon evolves with Eevee having a fairy type move and high affection. Espeon evolves with sufficient happiness.

Where do I get Flyinginiumnum Z crystal? I think I have all the others.
Finally beat the main story. It took me two tries to beat the E4 without healing
! And then freaking Kukui shows up and makes me waste all my Revives and Max Potions because I didn't think there'd be another battle.
! Good to know that someone uses the advantaged starter on you.
! And I really liked the ending. Felt better than just the credit roll that you get in the other games. I really don't get where people think that Lillie has a crush on you though…Was anyone interested in having AP Tournaments this gen?

Go to ten carat hill and push that giant block with Machamp.
It'll be long before I consider participating in a tournament. Still trying to set up EV training and breeding stuff.
On that note, does anyone have pokemon with pokerus that they could trade? I can offer HA Moonblast Vulpix (Modest), Moonblast Cutiefly (Modest), and adamant Cubone so far.
Also looking for anyone that has Team Purple in their festival plaza.

Don't let it learn Baby-Doll Eyes (or delete it at the Move Deleter) and it shouldn't be able to evolve into Sylveon. Or don't let it have two hearts in Refresh, if you absolutely want B-D Eyes for whatever reason…
