If I see one more person shit on Shigaraki because of "Muh Stain"…...
My Hero Academia - Gomu Gomu no Gentle Fist
-
-
I like how we actually get to see the mind and psychology of the villains. Seeing different reasons, but also things like mental instability and just how muddled your mind can become when all you can think of is hate. It feels strangely realistic - I can imagine people with these mentalities in the real world, and that's what makes it really scary.
It's also an interesting way of portraying these emotions. The "I'm jealous of X" villain reason isn't all that uncommon, but normally it's played a whole different way that makes it seem more comedic than serious. Jealousy as a whole tends to be a hard feeling to portray in works and not have it come off shallow or annoying.
-
To me it seemed like Horikoshi was thinking to himself about what Shigaraki was going to decide, and put all those thoughts into this chapter. As if he didn't plan any of this, but like Shigaraki himself, he asked a few questions and decided that "alright, next this and this is going to happen". It's methodical.
-
Congrats Deku! Facepalm/Drought Face now has no reservation using Stain fans to create Legion of Doom 2.0. But don't feel bad, seeing you made him forget to buy lotion. Equivalent exchange.
And more All Might build-up. When he dies the populace will lose their minds.

I'm not sure whether the confrontation like this was planned.
But I was re-reading last night, and the issue of Shigaraki not having a solid ideology/focus was touched upon in the invasion.
-
@CCC:
That was my first thought, too, except that Shigaraki's power doesn't produce blood and gore. Aizawa's elbow just crumbled away.
More likely, his father was killed by a villain or something, and All Might wasn't there to save him.
Good point about the blood. Hmmm, maybe Shigaraki lost his father in the incident that boosted All Might into "symbol of peace" status? Would be a nice way to link his and Deku's beginnings/inspiration stories together.
-
Could Shigaraki's father been a villain defeated or killed by All Might? That would certainly accomplish a Symbol of Peace boost.
-
Another really cool chapter, loved the progression for Shigaraki's character.
However, I was really not a fan of having Shigaraki's full face revealed.
I mean, the art was still very striking and well done, but I feel like he's lost a real piece of the intrigue behind him with that reveal.
Maybe I'm just overreacting because his palm on face design is such a favourite of mine.

its crazy how much the detail of the art changes on that one page

Shigaraki is pretty fucking vile.
Like after this chapter that's the first world that comes to my head when thinking about this, before even villain.
Just a vile, vile person/character.
Especially that smile he gave when walking away after saying next time he saw Deku he'd kill him. -
A thought occurs to me:
People are commenting on Shigaraki starting to develop, but I'm not so sure. Is it really development when Facepalm-kun "finding his conviction" can also just as easily be him finding an excuse to do what he already wanted to do, anyway?
-

Yup.actually it is

@.access:
Yup.actually it is
Even though he himself says nothing actually had changed? Or maybe it has and he himself doesn't recognize it?
-
How I got it was that he didn't understand what he wanted. Deku's responsible for fixing that. (Oops)
-
Even though he himself says nothing actually had changed? Or maybe it has and he himself doesn't recognize it?
Stain actually realized he had some conviction, but Shigaraki didn't think too much about it.
Also, by saying that he would use Stain's ideals as stepping stones, he pretty much confirms that he will be accepting new villains that think like Stain, if only to manipulate them not unlike All For One did.
-
Even if his objective or even his motive don't change, the growing perspective and analysis by Shigaraki counts as character development. If nothing else, he learns to define his goals in a way that might attract other people.

Hugging people to death?

Yeah, pretty much. He's got the reason and/or excuse he needs to do what he wants and even bring people to his cause.

I liked facepalmed always having a facepalm. He looks like someone that has leaved on the street for 2 long.
Now we know excatly how his power works and that it needs the 5 fingers.
I would say he understood Deku but that he his own vision of society made him twist it into more reason to chase All might. I would say Deku transform him into a resolute individual rather than being random.
Now I really wonder what is the author's plan for Stain.
-
So no one is talking about the giant fish and his kid going shopping. What kind of quirk is that, if quirks manifest at young age it will be really fuck up to become a fish all of the sudden.
-
I wonder what would happen if you cut one of his fingers. Also with the way he holds his hand around the neck you can probably break or rip of the finger if you had enough speed.
-
I guess that migth be a lie, he activates it some other way and he was just talking, I'd like to compare to other uses of his quirk.
-

I don't think he was lying. Look at how he holds a binocular. And then with all his fingers.
Well, every Quirk has some weakness, so needing all five fingers in order to disintegrate sounds likely. He also doesn't seem to have control over it.
-
I'm curious who all those hands belong to that he carries around. Or all they all a part of him? I initially thought they belonged to his father because the times I recall him saying "father" he reached for one of the hands. Or I could just be mistaken. Either way from the start I really wanted to know more about him.

Nah that was mainly him reaching for the one covering his face after All Might knocked it off. Chances are that daddy hand is just that one. Perhaps the rest are just some Yoshikage Kira rejects.
-

That's why he carries all those spare hands man.
In case someone rips his finger off.
-
I find it weird that no one of us noticed the need of the full touch to disintegrate. There is a kira jr supporter here.
-

In that same page it looks like he grabs his collar with all 5 fingers.
If its true that if all 5 fingers touch something it automatically dissintergrates it without his controling it, then i wonder if he can wear gloves or something to allow him to touch things with all fingers without his power activating.
That brings up another question. Do we know if powers in MHA world can be trained and increased? Like take the Sato the sugar rush guy in class A. For every 10 grams of sugar he gets 5 times stronger. Is this a a hard and fast rule? He can only turn 10 grams into 5 times strength, or could he say turn 5 grams into 2.5 times strength? Could he possibly turn 20 grams of sugar into 10 times strength?
It seems like some characters quirks are maxed out while others seem to have an ability to keep growing in power, but it feels like the author hasnt explicitly stated it.
Uraraka for example, will she only be able to float 10 tons forever but she can train her body and mind to not get lightheaded and puke so easy making her stronger or could her power keep increasing and over time she can float even more weight?
I love that the author hasnt explicitly answered but seems to tease about it.
-

It wasn't? Weird. I thought it was all over the place a few week ago. Here's a compilation of the full touch quirk activation panel proofs.
-

He's not. He's only doing the typical angry, shaking hand gesture.
-
I read recently on TV tropes that Uraraka does something similar with not touching with all five fingers due to her powers having a similar trigger. I haven't had a chance to look through and confirm but had anyone else ever noticed that?

Considering that she has a release command, her ability is probably not passive.

- The students have to walk from this open field to their accommodation and through a forest called "Forest of the Beasts"
- It is currently 9 o'clock: they won't succed their task if they can't reach the accommodation in under 30 hours
- The students are in the schools "Private Forest of the Beasts" called the "Pussy Cats"
- This training is meant to show their "personalities" when a temporary exemption of strong enemies happens, similar to when suddenly the villains raided USJ
- That is also why this training happens in their 1st year, because normally it is meant to happen in their 2nd year
- It is because the class already had to fight against villains that their training is different than Class B's and earlier than the previous classes
- The Camp starts!!!

He doesn't get five times stronger with each dose. He stays in the 5x power mode for another three minutes with every dose.

It was in her chapter cover page. She has pads on her fingers, and in order to remove the gravity from an object, all five pads of one of her hands need to touch it. Similar to Shigaraki, yes.

Yeah, I think everyone got that part. It was more of a discussion of whether or not it is passive like Shigaraki's or not, which does not seem to be the case with her having a release command and not making an effort to not touch things with all 5 fingers as we've seen with Facepalm.

I'm not sure whether the part where it says "personalities" means their quirks. "Kosei" pretty directly means individuality, you wouldn't find "personality" in the dictionary for it.

Am I seeing things or is brown red now?
I thought that was a great chapter. The cat girl heroes remind me of Yu Yu Hakusho's Koto and I always found her to be a very fun announcer character. Really good set-up chapter. I can't wait for stuff to go down here - it is very Hunter Exam and whatever the first arc introducing Genkai is called in Yu Yu Hakusho (don't remember).
