Its really awesome to have One Piece simulcasting in HD on Crunchyroll, but I have to say as a person being snubbed most of the time by licensing restrictions aka geoblocks that I really hope more regions will be able to get access to One Piece as I do currently in Australia simply because the product is well worth it in terms of timeliness, video quality and streaming performance.
Crunchyroll to simulcast One Piece!

First off I hope they get the older seasons/episodes up on Crunchyroll as soon as possible, that's going to be good for everyone who may be at various points in the series. Also it needs to be available in every major region at some point. It's especially a shame that at the very least it's not available in the U.K. or Ireland.
-
Awesome, it's great to see that the higher ups at Japan are seeing that One Piece is taking roots in foreign countries and that they're looking to improve One Piece for foreign fans!! I only have a few problems:
1. Music issues. I know that it may not be Toei's fault, but I think we should at least let them know its bothering us so that they could hopefully try and help fix it, since I think most fans would agree that the lack of fanfare in Strong World and the possibility of not having Hands Up during Punk Hazard are their biggest concerns.
2. Previews. I know this one's minor since we get the previews with the dub releases anyway, but it kind of stinks that I have to go search for the preview on youtube when I should just be able to see it after the episode is over.
3. Specials, Movies, Ect. This might be more on Funimation's end, but I think every fan would love it if foreign dubs would get to watch and own the One Piece movies and specials that have come out. I know Funimation gets specials like historical boss luffy, but those are technically episodes. I'm talking more like ovas. This could also benefit Crunchyroll, because Funimation could license Film Z for example, and then maybe they could work out a deal where Crunchyroll gets to have the subbed version of the film on their site, while Funimation is working on the DVD, so that some hype can be generated.
These are just my thoughts on the whole thing, again, I'm super stoked that the producers in Japan care about their foreign fan base!! Thanks for telling us about this great opportunity Greg!

I second this, my biggest issue right now is not having Hands Up! as the opening. Really hope this can get resolved.
-
Just want to co-sign the song concerns. If anything just ot let Toei know we do wish to see this resolved. I was really disappointed to see Fanfare not kept in Strong World as I feared, and still having We Go! instead of Hands Up! is just ridiculous. Also episode previews would be awesome!

Thank you for your replies. I've compiled them and sent them along to concerned parties.

I think one big thing is "One Piece" still has work to do in terms of being bigger worldwide, on the same scale as "Dragonball Z". Latin America is a big region where "One Piece" has underperformed, so I think it's imperative that Toei Animation produce a new Spanish/Portugese dub that's faithful to the Japanese version and is at least just as good as the FUNimation dub, get it on TV, etc.
Also maybe make that one-piece.com site international, as in make it multilingual eventually to open it up to fans around the world.
-
THANK YOU FIRECROUCH!
…but I think that's over Greg's jurisdiction. LOL. There are 2 companies in Lat Am That want to do One Piece uncut and they are not Toei. If you want to read about it check the LatAM Redub Thread.
-
Despite potentially accurate criticisms aimed at other aspects of the series, a decidedly positive aspect of Toei's policy is that they do want to bring OP to the rest of the world 'like yesterday'.
The issue goes back to being one of financial stability and trust, neither of which are easy to come by in large doses. I know it doesn't help knowing Toei simply wants to bring it overseas, but at least take comfort in that they are not actively hiding it from the world.

A little update from the Crunchyroll forums:
It won't be like Bleach where we released one new episode and one old episode once a week. We'll be releasing the old episodes in chunks. I know we're currently working on the first 100 episodes. Not sure if 100 will be released, but just can confirm it won't be like Bleach. Chunks of old episodes will be released instead of one. That's all the information I have. Sorry!
As expected, large chunks of the series will be posted instead of just one-by-one.

That's good to hear, can't wait till they get to Impel Down and beyond.

That is good news. I subcribe both to hulu plus and crunchyroll and thinking of dropping one. This will make my decision easier.

IT'S HAPPENING!
Hey guys,
We just want to thank everyone for their patience as we've been working hard behind the scenes to get the kinks worked out, but we're FINALLY ready to announce that the One Piece catalog will be available starting THIS SATURDAY at 6:00pm Pacific Time, the same as when new episodes air!
We'll be rolling out an average of 20-30 episodes each week, so get ready to relive what just may possibly be one of the greatest adventures in anime history! Or, for those of you who have been waiting eagerly to see if all from the beginning, get the popcorn ready and tell your friends, because One Piece is on its way!

We're moving on up!~

I think Crunchyroll made One Piece more accessible and the Breaking Bad effect took place.People that got hooked by binging episodes online increased ratings for the TV broadcast. It got over 1 million again on Toonami!

I just hope this doesn't mean the downfall of Yibis, a group I'm associated with.

@Maj0ra:
I just hope this doesn't mean the downfall of Yibis, a group I'm associated with.
What Yibis is doing is illegal anyways, so "downfall" isn't the right word to be used here, if anything if Yibis respect One Piece/Eiichiro Oda/TOEI any bit they should stop subbing since Crunchyroll provides official subbed releases, and when you pay on Crunchyroll you are supporting the industry.

Then Crunchyroll should provide this service for other countries as well, not only for people who live in America. As someone who lives in Europe and who needs her weekly portion of well subbed One Piece I can only go to Yibis since Crunchyroll isn't available in my country.

Fans from USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Latin America can watch One Piece on Crunchyroll. Yibis doesn't even give you a "weekly" fix for One Piece anime, their releases are late and they are massively behind.
It's a bummer that not all parts of the world have access to watching it on Crunchyroll, but at the same time Yibis must not be "defended" or their "downfall" shouldn't be sad. When thieves are caught no one feels bad for them as they are taken into prison. Yibis does nothing to even try and promote One Piece anime by informing people that Crunchyroll is also operating. If they'd at least put up a message with their releases or on their sites that the above mentioned regions can support One Piece they'd be doing something good at least, but nope nothing.
-
You guys definitely do NOT understand the mindset of fansub groups. I can easily tell that. I can also admit that the leader of Yibis is beyond stubborn and doesn't care about any legality about anything. I don't really work with Yibis anymore because I don't really like their leader as he's very much an acquired taste as a human and I don't have that taste…like... at all.
-

You know… Pretty much every time the official subs are brought up on our forum, I'm usually the first to come to their defense, and tell people that "Seriously, if you can, you really SHOULD be streaming those. Heck, I don't care if you actually WATCH them or not, but you could at least let them play through so Toei gets their ad revenue." Same for the DVDs for that matter, I'm constantly telling people to go buy those too.
I would appreciate it if you didn't talk as though we're actively trying to sabotage FUNi, please. If FUNi's streams were to become available to all, or at least most of, the world, I would happily quit subbing right there and then because clearly there would be no need for fansubs of OP anymore. -
I think Toei Animation's intent is to get "One Piece" available in as many territories as possible, but as you know not everything can happen over night…

Firecrouch I wanted to ask, at this point Thriller Bark is basically unavaialble on Funimation/Hulu because of the whole licensing issues in the past and they've added up to episodes 335/336, Is crunchyroll gonna have a gap when they reach that point as they add the episodes each Saturday? because we all know Season 6 was announced this year but I heard it was delayed(Is this also true?), for various reasons, I don't mind waiting since patience is key with enjoying One Piece in the states, but I just wanted to confirm if were going to have to wait until all of Season 6 is released first until CR, and hulu and the rest of the legal streaming sites are able to receive it or if there won't be any problems and they'll be able to add all the episodes just fine, thats if you would know this kind of information

My guess is that if anyone gets season 6 first it would be Crunchyroll, seeing as how they're just doing streaming rights. Hulu will stream it when FUNimation starts releasing it.

So Crunchyroll won't have a gap when they reach Thriller Bark? Thats my main concern since CR is better and OP been on Hulu a long time to build following, So are you saying the Season 6 DVDs won't affect them being able to add the rest of the episodes on Crunchyroll? I think I read a post of you mentioning CR getting the rights directly from Toei, but I wasn't sure cause they use the Funimation logo on there

Also wanted to ask do you think all the Funimation dub episodes of OP will be available when Neon Alley joins Hulu? They for some reason don't have them all up yet, and who knows when One Piece will make its way to Netflix for people that want to stream the dubbed episodes legally and easier

I mean I can only speculate like everything else on this forum, but Crunchyroll licensed "One Piece" directly from Toei Animation, that's a given. I'm guessing besides just working out the rights for certain territories FUNimation wasn't and isn't involved with the Crunchyroll stream. If you notice the stream itself is available in the U.S.A., Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Latin America, and South Africa. Along with that you get subtitle options for English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Those particular areas correlate to Toei Animation Inc., the Los Angeles-based arm of Toei Animation Co., Ltd. which works in those regions.
So with that said, even if the Season 6 DVDs are delayed that doesn't necessarily mean the Crunchyroll stream of those respective episodes will be affected. Also they use the FUNimation logo on Crunchyroll? Which episodes? Because I just watched a Dressrosa episode and I didn't see it.
As for Neon Alley, I don't know. I asked Neon Alley on their Facebook page last week how the third party shows like "One Piece" will be affected by the switch to Hulu. The response was that it's unknown at this time.

The One Piece photo they use has Funimation logo for one, and its in the old episodes, like the openings and those little commericial breaks One Piece used to have with the wanted posters, but I still think its directly from Toei as well, I just wanted to make sure, I'm sure there using the Funimation logo since thats the way One Piece is currently showcased in the US with the DVDs and Toonami

DVDs were used for at least the 480p streams. Eternal Pose is used instead of Mirai Kōkai.

Crunchyroll added two new notices to the One Piece page.
I had a feeling that they would have to take a break on uploading the backlog at one point. The question is: How long will this break be? A week? Two weeks?
-
I'd say that's very likely due to them not having the FUNI DVDs to encode after 336. Hopefully this means softsubs from that point on.
Also hoping their reorganization is labeling by Season, since the page does take quite a bit of time to load.

Yes please. I have a moderately fast internet connection and it takes a full minute to load all the videos on the page. -_-

:-\ wow that's lame. And here I was taking jabs at funi at how crunchy roll beat them to the punch on thriller bark, and then this happens. First funi delays their English dub release and then crunchy roll delays their sub release! You just can't win.
And if in fact they were using funi sub's,which seems apparent,THEN WHY THE FLIP NOT HAVE A SEPERATE TEAM CREATING SUBS FOR THE EPISODES 200+ AND BEYOND?
I really don't mean to sound like an entitled jack ass,but I've been really looking forward to a legal way to watch thriller bark in HD(sick of fansubs).

Hi, i have a question, i come in france thus i can not see the page of One Piece on the website of the Crunchyroll, i would know at which episode the diffusion of the old episodes was and if from the episode 207 he was in HD or always in DVD ?
Sorry for my english, and thanks in advanced :)
-

Seems like the site takes up a lot of RAM or CPU processing power to load up fast. It takes only about 5 seconds on my computer, but it's noticeably making my computer work harder while it's loading with a short burst in fan speed.
-
No new backlog episodes, none updated to HD. Damn.
Though they did format the episode list into separate arc batches. That's something, I guess.

Actually I'd call that nothing, considering it's something they should have been doing all along, as they were releasing them.

Looks like it's going to be a while. On the June calendar, only the weekly episodes are scheduled: http://www.crunchyroll.com/launchcalendar?month=6&

OK, been hearing a lot about Crunchyroll for a while now and came here and read through all the previous posts. I'm not entirely sure how to feel on this issue.
Funimation stream One Piece, and now Crunchyroll does. I may be incorrectly using the term, but I feel like Toei created a conflict of interest by licencing One Piece to two streaming services. Why licence to a company that would take ad revenue from another company whom you have a decent working relationship.
It sounds like a lot of you on here have essentially jumped ship from Funimation to Crunchyroll for the streams, essentially lessening your support for them. I know Funimation aren't going to go under just because you aren't going to watch their streams and the dvds will sell well regardless of where you watch the stream, but for me personally, it feels like a slap in the face to a company that has done so much in bringing the show to us in dub and sub form.
Am I just misreading the situation here? I'm not here to kick off or act all high and mighty, I'm just having a hard time seeing how two companies showing the same episodes is a good thing for Funimation. If you feel I've crossed a line in accusations, I do apologize for that, I just would like some answers about this.
-
^ My problem with Funimation is that their streaming app sucks. They don't have all the One Piece episodes available (unless you watch on a roku player + on a computer / don't even get me started on all the bugs and how slow the website loads). When I try to use it for my Samsung tablet the screen is cut off from the bottom. They make you pay $10 if you want the app ad-free. Crunchyroll doesn't have any of those issues. All of their shows stream perfectly (with any platform) and they have all the episodes available to watch. Their app is free and much easier to navigate. The only thing they lack is not having any of the One Piece episodes in HD (hopefully that changes in due time). So I'd rather watch One Piece through Crunchyroll instead of Funimation's stream. I don't think I lessen my support for Funimation as long as I am buying the DVDs (I'm only interested in their collection boxsets + movies).
I hope by next month Crunchyroll adds more backlog of episodes. Taking a whole month off is too much.
-
It seems like Funimation might have the last laugh. They already have the first six subbed episodes of Thriller Bark on their website, exclusive to EVS members. And they're adding two episodes of Thriller Bark a week.
Seems like they took advantage of Crunchyroll's situation.

I don't have an EVS membership, so I wouldn't know. It would be silly for them NOT to be in HD.

Interesting. I might use the free trial and check it out.

I just recently discovered Crunchyroll. (Where has this been all my life?) signed up for the pay version at less than 8 bucks a month and all this anime streamed legally. Look at all those Fairy Tail eps. Been watching some good stuff that I can't even pronounce like. 'brumhilda?" and some drama about kids from under the ocean that I thought was pretty good and now Silver Spoon.
I wonder how long each series will be on there before being removed? Is there any precedent for a series to have a short life with past episodes being removed? Are most of the series what are current in Japan? I see some old stuff from the US like Galaxy High. -
Finally. Backlog episodes are coming this month. Let's pray that it's sooner rather than later.
