I know he was a somewhat minor character but wasn't Buyon the first character ever killed on screen?
Oh, yeah, him…I guess I was refering to human characters? I forgot if Buyon was even capable if human talk.
But I guess we can count him.

-I've been collecting the….curses, I forget the term....uhh, the Viz Media translated 3-in-1 volume sets. With the red cover, white lettering? Because I was so used to how Viz handled the series here (Dragon Ball -> split to Z portion), I thought this only entailed Goku's adventures up to Piccolo Jr.
Nope!
In Japan, it's all just Dragonball, there is no Z. The releases we've gotten up until now have all been split and renamed by Viz, and for this release that's (Kinda sorta not really) based on the Japanese Kanzenban, they decided to actually do a release that's like it is in Japan.
This release uses the Kanzenban red covers, but otherwise is just your basic omnibus with none of the other perks the Kanzenban had (higher quality pages, bigger printing, color pages, etc)
-Additionally, the sets say uncut and uncensored, yet Popo's lips are still censored in these 3-in-1 sets. I get why, but it seems like false advertising.
Yeah, the idea behind this release was to do an uncensored release of the material finally, and with the exception of a printing error that caused the old version of Volumes 1-3 to see print in the first 3-in-1 book, the rest are at least DRASTICALLY less censored than prior releases have been. I actually have one of them on me, and stuff like Kuririn pulling Bulma's top down during Uranai Baba's tournament to make Kamesen'in bleed on the invisible man is left intact….
However, the stuff that got changed because of perceived racism stayed changed because essentially, Viz are worried about a lawsuit of some kind. So yeah, KINDA false advertisement, but kinda not as this is the first time in YEARS Viz has released anything that's even close to uncut of this series.
-Would you believe in my stand-aside volume of 16, there's a hiliarous inconsistency with a translation. Remember this scene?
[qimg]http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonball/images/4/43/GiantPiccolo.png/revision/latest?cb=20120501221354[/qimg]On the back of the volume, as a preview, the panel reads:
Piccolo: "Gya ha ha! Don't you think you should ask your friends for help? At this point, you have no hope of winning!"
but inside the volume, it reads:
Piccolo: "Gahahaha! Do you truly wish to decline your allies' aid?! Without it, your slim hope becomes none at all!" I have other volumes with this, but maybe someone can help me out. This more….formal English, is this consistent with Piccolo's speech patterns in Japanese, before he really becomes an ally? Or, like the pirate talk in early One Piece, it was just Viz being eccentric?
Viz being eccentric. I have the Japanese Kanzenban and I can confirm, he doesn't talk in an especially stand out way that would necessitate this speech pattern. I think this was honestly just (maybe) the translator realizing the character is an ancient evil that's been freed from a lengthy sleep and decided his diction should be like this because of that?
I don't know, but yeah, nothing in the Japanese says this needs to be a thing.
It's a matter of balance. For every city King Piccolo has leveled down, there was a Mister Popo or Tao Pai Pai. Son Goku dies, but various afterlife hijinks with King Kai ensue. In the middle of the namekian genocide, there was the Ginyu squad breather.
But the serious action aspect was slowly inflating in size, overwhelming the comedy parts. By Cell arc the humour has almost dried up. Really, was there any jokes except for Vegeta getting his arm broken by 18? That was when Dragonball has reached its lowest point.
I'm glad some of us are on the same page on this. The Buu arc is probably my favorite DBZ arc overall because it brought back the fun aspect of earlier Dragonball and just kept getting more delightfully bizarre as the series went on. Sure it kind of got really ridiculous with the super saiyan power-ups, but the humor went a long way in off-setting that. The android/cell arc indeed was an unusually dead serious moment in the series and not something Dragonball does remarkably well in large doses.
Also, with how crazy power levels have been in the latter part of the series, it's probably better for this new TV series to become less serious rather than more.
Nope!

Hmm, in what way? I'm glossing things over, and things seem to be okay….in fact, one of the more interesting edits I remember is when Bulma is taking a shower in the middle of the desert in the bus, after Goku loses to Yamcha. Yamcha peeks in and....bam, gets shocked at the sight of her breasts (with nipples!)
That scenes seems to be intact, and I even remember seeing it in an early standalone volume too, when Viz was cranking up the censors?

Yep, that's intact.
I think Viz, in prior prints, also editted out some guns, middle fingers….and of course, the Mr. Satan-Hercule thing. (I'm unsure if Viz started that or Funimation, but both probably did it for the same reasons)
However, the stuff that got changed because of perceived racism stayed changed because essentially, Viz are worried about a lawsuit of some kind. So yeah, KINDA false advertisement, but kinda not as this is the first time in YEARS Viz has released anything that's even close to uncut of this series.

It's kinda funny because Piccolo Daimao (his father/likeness) doesn't really talk in the same way.

Viz said on Twitter that the edited V1-3 book was a printing error, so it's possible they corrected this in later printings. My volume has the same scene you're talking about but with bubbles covering said nipples.
I think Viz, in prior prints, also editted out some guns, middle fingers….and of course, the Mr. Satan-Hercule thing. (I'm unsure if Viz started that or Funimation, but both probably did it for the same reasons)
Yes indeed they did! And the "Hercule" thing was all FUNimation, Viz just followed their lead on it, however, FUNimation released unedited DVDs that called him "Mr. Satan" because calling him anything else would have required doing a lot of visual edits as his name was written EVERYWHERE during the Boo arc.
I hope they fix a lot of this stuff in this edition, like I hope he's Mr. Satan here, but I'm not that far in buying this re-release, haven't even gotten past Piccolo Daimao yet, so we shall see.
It's kinda funny because Piccolo Daimao (his father/likeness) doesn't really talk in the same way.
Probably also why Piccolo stops talking that way pretty fast.
Why did Piccolo stopped growing into a giant in DBZ?
Why did Piccolo stopped growing into a giant in DBZ?
Same reason Tenshinhan never grew two extra arms again
Why did Piccolo stopped growing into a giant in DBZ?
Because it just makes him a bigger target. Sure he gets the strength increase of being that bulk, but it just makes it easier for a guy to punch a hole through your chest or jump into your mouth or knock you off balance or mess with your ears or something. Noth times Piccollo (and Slug if you want to count him) did it, it basically ended in Goku killing him… while having broken arms and legs no less
Vegeta going giant ape had a legitimate actual strength and defense boost multiplier, not just the size, so there was a point in doing that.
Same reason Tenshinhan never grew two extra arms again
I assume he dropped that for the same reason as tri-form.
Sure he gets the extra couple arms for grappling, which is fine in a purely physical contest with a slightly lesser opponent, but he's also splitting his energy to create them, making himself overall weaker. 4 arms that can lift 50 pounds each (that consume some energy to create in the first place) aren't always going to be better than 2 arms that can lift 100 pounds each. And especially when your anatomy isn't really designed to make great use of it leverage wise.
There's Toriyama forgetting things… and then there's techniques having massive horrendous easily exploited flaws that actually warrant not using them again.
Also, I imagine watching a 12 year old mock your technique and get the same basic effect by basically twirling his arms real fast probably puts you off a thing.
never really thought about that, but good point
I assume for the same reason the solar flare attack was one of the few old and esoteric concepts to stay around for a longer time, since obviously even the baddest bad guy can still be blinded.

Unsure. But "Satan" is a religious issue, and since I've seen Viz releases keeping in crosses….I think it'll stay. Most likely, we'll hear "Mr. Satan" and nothing else when Funi finally releases the Buu arc of Kai.
Don't think the Popo censor will change though, unless Viz just gets lazy towards the end.
Probably also why Piccolo stops talking that way pretty fast.
Wait, I actually don't know if Viz kept it for this remastered, "uncensored" 3-in-1 set. Because Piccolo Jr. appeared in volume 16, and I own that volume as a stand alone. Then the encounters with Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta…..won't see until he's revived during the fight with Freeza.
I'm honestly not looking forward to the new series, the only ones who actually get to ever fight and get power ups always seem to be Goku and Vegeta. Mean - while, Gohan has slowly been reduced to a punching bag, seriously the last few films and specials have been majorly disappointing Gohan fans like myself which is why I'm not looking forward to this. Let's see how else they can trash Gohan's reputation, I would have preferred him to end the series at the Cell saga. In my opinion passing the saving the world thing down to Gohan was the best way to end the series. This is starting to seem like desperate attempt to make more money, remember when the guy said he wanted to offically end the series at the Buu saga and if he were to make a new series it would have been about Hercules? What happened with that?
FYI I'm starting to wonder why they added in Goten? He hasn't done a single thing since
the Buu saga. Feels like a waste of a character.

Viz started tranlating DB vol 1 and dbz vol 1 at the same time, and were on monthly releases with 48 page comics for a loooong time. It took them yeeeears to get through original ragonball, longer than its original run in Japan. (And took forever to get through Frieza as well.. Then they switched to Shonen Jump for Cell… but finally for Buu they went straight to volume releases) It took them a while to get through. (Ranma 1/2 sufferred similar problems... where it took almost 20 years to get through a 10 year series.)
(its hard to get exact dates because now almost everything has been unified to a "2003 Shonen Jump edition" release date, but issues and volumes were coming out way before that.)
So they STARTED with Piccollo having the fancy speech... which I actually liked because it distinguished his character and set him apart some... but they'd switched translators or backed off of that by the time they got around to Piccollo Sr. years later in DB and sort of faded it out in Z.
And since they've just kept their translations all along, as a result he picks up this elegant speech pattern for a couple volumes in the middle out of nowhere and then drops it. (Similarly, Goku being referred to as "Son", his last name, varies a bit as it all goes along)
For extra fun, the picture on the back of volume 16 has Piccollo saying one thing, and then the same exact panel inside the book has him saying another. Wackiness.

Gohan getting weaker at the end of the Cell saga made sense as he was never much of fighter, and with the world being at peace he had no reason to train constantly. Saving the world happens and participating in contests of strength happen once in a while but once you do that you have to do something practical with you time be it going to school or getting a job.

Right, I got that during the time of piece but that shouldn't have reduced him to this in the last film. He keeps getting trashed.
The most cruel thing is that Gohan is without cheating (fusing or absorbing) the strongest fighter, yet his role in the Boo saga was: joke around-get knocked out-get stuck doing silly training-power up-get eaten.
Adult Gohan turned out to be a boring character and Toriyama prefered to focus on other characters but that was quite the rough treatment for one of the main characters.

Gohan's portrayal in the new movies never made sense to me
Buu arc:
-After sparring with Goten, he laments the fact that he 'let himself slide' and got so much weaker
-Feels guilty about not being able to beat Dabura and save Krillin and Piccolo because he slacked off
In the new movies:
-Slacks off even harder, loses nearly all of his powers
How does this make any sense? What kind of character 'development' is this?
Whereas at the end of the manga he retained his Ultimate form, indicating that he maintained his power at the very least, and that he didn't let himself slide like previous time.
These new movies piss all over that, and basically discards an entire series worth of character development
I see so 'character development' = power level.
Even though I can agree the Gohan to protect the world angle at the end of Cell was kinda botched for the Buu arc….Gohan was always the opposite of his dad as a kid. Shy, polite, not a zealous fighter....compared to the energetic, no-holds-barred, hick-talking Goku.
Gohan's development has been him getting braver, being forced in difficult battles, and finding his own path. And slack off or not, he's still one of the strongest characters overall.
The most cruel thing is that Gohan is without cheating (fusing or absorbing) the strongest fighter, yet his role in the Boo saga was: joke around-get knocked out-get stuck doing silly training-power up-get eaten.
That describes literally everyone's role during the Buu saga. They all had wacky training or goofy fights, and everyone got eaten and absorbed, including Piccollo, Gotenks, and Vegetto. Gohan actually got one of the most badass scenes after his training was done and did pretty great at totally manhandling Buu. Just trickery that got him.
Gohan losing to Buu is fine, thats the dramatic "oh shit, our trump card just got taken away, NOW what do we do?" and thats how you make things interesting and exciting. Goku has all his limbs broken against Piccollo. Goku lost to Vegeta. Piccollo, Gohan, Vegeta, and even Goku lost to Frieza before Goku went Super. Vegeta easily manhandles 19, but then gets destroyed by 18. Goku loses to Cell. Gohan gets his arm wrecked while Cell powers up to Super 2.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the strongest character losing to the villain, and then forcing everyone else to try an emergency desperation tactic instead. That's exciting. Gohan was fine during Buu, his role made sense. Gohan had all the screen time in the Saiyan and Frieza arcs, and was the final champion of the Cell arcs, and got the Great Saiyaman stuff which is one of my favorite parts of the series. He got a ton of focus and exposure and was overall, treated pretty fairly, especially compared to a lot of the rest of the cast.
Him being the go-to fodder guy in everything since the manga ended , be it movie 13, 14, 15 or GT, is pretty lame though.
I see so 'character development' = power level.
If that's true Nappa, Frieza, Android 18, & Evil Buu had ton's of character development.

I think you meant 16, cause 18 got character development.lol

Gohan's development has been him getting braver, being forced in difficult battles, and finding his own path. And slack off or not, he's still one of the strongest characters overall.
But him slacking off and getting so much weaker again in these new movies just doesn't make sense, when in the Buu arc, literally one arc before these movies, he was constantly lamenting the fact that he let himself get so much weaker in the first place, and felt guilty that he couldn't help out because of it :getlost:
End of Z was perfect for him, he's living his life doing what he wants just like in the Buu arc, but this time he didn't let himself get weaker (considering he still has the Mystic eyes), and still has the power to protect the world if needed. This makes perfect sense, considering he hated it that he got so much weaker back when it happened in the Buu arc.
That describes literally everyone's role during the Buu saga. They all had wacky training or goofy fights, and everyone got eaten and absorbed, including Piccollo, Gotenks, and Vegetto.
But he did it intentionally. He didn't end up in one of those ball cocoons, he rescued everyone else, and, as a bonus, got himself reseparated.
Gohan losing to Buu is fine, thats the dramatic "oh shit, our trump card just got taken away, NOW what do we do?" and thats how you make things interesting and exciting.
And piss people like me off who really wanted Gohan to deliver.
Goku has all his limbs broken against Piccollo.
And he still won.
Goku lost to Vegeta.
He still contributed by making another Spirit Bomb and (I think) getting transformed Gohan to attack Vegeta.
Piccollo, Gohan, Vegeta, and even Goku lost to Frieza before Goku went Super.
We all knew Goku was going to beat him and we knew Goku was going to fulfill the SSJ prophecy. Goku didn't lose.
Gohan gets his arm wrecked while Cell powers up to Super 2.
And he still won.
I know I've said this all before, but my issue isn't whether or not Gohan getting absorbed makes things desperate or interesting, it's that it essentially neutered him and took away the whole passing of the torch thing. Gohan got absorbed and then did nothing for the rest of the story except contribute to the Spirit Bomb.
And yes, I know the whole of how Toriyama originally wanted Gohan to be the new hero, but it just didn't pan out. Because characters take on a life of their own and tell the authors what to write. And Gohan was telling Toriyama, "I need to suck. HARD."
But him slacking off and getting so much weaker again in these new movies just doesn't make sense, when in the Buu arc, literally one arc before these movies, he was constantly lamenting the fact that he let himself get so much weaker in the first place, and felt guilty that he couldn't help out because of it :getlost:

If I had to guess, maybe Goku coming back for good meant he didn't have to train as hard, and just got caught up in focusing on his studies.
I think you meant 16, cause 18 got character development.lol
I don't recall 16 walking all over Vegeta in display of a strength which was the central theme of my comment.
If I had to guess, maybe Goku coming back for good meant he didn't have to train as hard, and just got caught up in focusing on his studies.
That and the fact that with the world not needing him he had to go and you know do something practical like go to school or get a job two thing his parents never did:ninja:.

Ops read your commentary wrong.
Sorry about that.

Well, Chi-Chi was the housekeeper….uh, she and Goku managed a farm in the Tarble OVA....so I guess that counts?
Another interesting thing I noticed was in the anime, you know how she always pressured Gohan to stay home and study? (all of those scenes with Gohan in his room with books). Apparently that ain't the case in the manga, at least not in the beginning of Gohan's appearance. When she and her father head to Roshi's-
Chi-Chi: Well, goodie for Goku! Except our son has school!
Gyu-Mao: But Gohan's only 4 years old! He can miss a day of preschool and it won't make any….!
Gohan wasn't homeschooled in the manga?
Ops read your commentary wrong.
Sorry about that.
It happens .
Well, Chi-Chi was the housekeeper….uh, she and Goku managed a farm in the Tarble OVA....so I guess that counts?
There's something about that, that just doesn't sound right like Vegeta dancing or Piccolo wearing casual clothes and learning to drive a car:ninja:.
Him being the go-to fodder guy in everything since the manga ended , be it movie 13, 14, 15 or GT, is pretty lame though.
Exactly as planned.
So that explains all the worfing that went around in Z…....
Well, Piccolo said he was going to remake Gohan in his own image as revenge on Goku.
Gohan being the designated jobber pretty much fits the bill on both accounts.
I would love if someone were to direct me to the best link for Dragonball Fukkatsu No F movie….... please.

If there in any such link, I'd be shocked. If there is, it would most certainly be a cam-rip
Best wait at least a few more months down the line if not longer.
yamcha is the best ultimate jobber in dbz history
@Mr.:

I myself am waiting for the NA theatrical release to see it. But unlike Battle of Gods, I'm gonna try to avoid the subbed version (even though I know like 70% of the plot)
@mario:

surprised you didn't use the Saibaman explosion :ninja:
But seriously, Yamcha gets too much flak. Krillin, Piccolo, Trunks, and others have all jobbed at some point.
Yamcha is such a jobber that even Gintama jokes about him and he got a figurine in his iconic "reckt in a crater" pose released.
Somehow fails much less than Sakura though.

The problem is that Yamcha jobs all the time. Piccolo, Kuririn, and Trunks aren't always entirely useless.
The others merely adopted the jobbing.
It also doesn't help that Yamcha's biggest win is against the invisible man by way of Bulma's boobs and Roshi's nosebleeds

Eh true. Although I think he got a worse fate in-universe than out of it.
So there is gonna be a manga as well? If it does well OP will finally have serious competition.

Not really at all, at the very least being its publication in V Jump and that it's just another adaption thing done by Toyotaro.

I remembered that he beat somebody. Thanks for reminding me. Truly a great triumph that continues to make him proud in the present and for all time.
@Purple:

What is really expected is that DBS will have the same pacing as DBZ had and OP currently has(very slow).
The first episodes of DBS might happen after ROF but before End of Z, the manga will probably begin after Z(hopefully focused about Uub, and how and why he is a prodigy).

Why would it? There won't be any need for filler if they're just making up their own story whole cloth.

Yeah, if anything, it should have GT's pacing.
For all the faults GT had, pacing wasn't one of them. It moved at a pretty fast clip and was constantly doing something new.
Poor Yamcha, he will forever be the joke of a character in Z for the rest of the series. Even shows like Gintamw know of his failed character.
So, new Manga series too eh? Wonder what the compettition will be like now? I remember seeing charts back than that Z was tough compettition for One Piece.

What charts? Dragon Ball and One Piece didn't run at the same time.
Do you mean the US Shonen Jump?
