@Darth:
You forgot about the poor dumbasses that drunk the special drug water in Alabasta. Those are dead as well.
Look, willful ignorance is all well and good, but just because I know it was always like that (And I do. Contrary to you idiots constantly yelling at me, I am well aware of the motives of the series), that does not make it good. It does not make it GOOD, especially when used in such a egregious way.
I read One Piece and I usually enjoy it DESPITE it's flaws of which I am aware of. But putting something like that into the bloody climax of an arc that's at best average and at worst attrocious?
Unless Law is really dead. He so isn't, but if he is, than that's actually an okay thing to do. Otherwise, no matter if Oda has done it thousands times before, bad is bad, and bad being a pattern is no justification.
Ive been reading comments like this for some time now and never spoke up about it, but i figure now is as good a time as any, so here goes…
I get that there are people who wish one piece took more of a fullmetal Alchemist or Bleach approach to the whole "death" thing (some maybe even to the level of gantz/shingeki no kyojin and works like that) but i want to be very clear about this: not meeting your wishes does NOT constitute bad writing and is not a good point to make especially when demanding "logical" arguments and i will point out why:
Most contemporary critics of literature would agree that when evaluating a work it should not only be considered in a vacuum (which is one of the steps, without a doubt) but the surrounding circumstances should also be taken into consideration. Concerning this particular work (one piece) one should be mindful of the fact that it has defined itself as a lighthearted shounen adventure series from the get go, having pretty explicit rules of conduct from both its author and its publishing medium. Sure we all love when a work defies or subverts its genre but given the exorbitant success of One Piece this is simply not possible anymore. The more mainstream a work, the stricter the rules it will have to follow and i`m sorry if anybody feels like he/she is part of some subculture here, but one piece is about as mainstream as it gets. The fact that Oda manages to thrill people given the rigid enviroment (mainstream also means calling up stapels, including, but not limited to: fake death cliffhangers, nakama powerups, force of will powerups, obligatory ticking clock element, etc) isbtonbe applauded, even though i understand some readers wishes for More...Let's call it "Grit" for lack of a better word. Its not ging to change and honestly(this is just speculation of course) i dont think Oda would change it even if he could. He is a great Teller of Stories and he chose to ground bis in this area instead of any other and im sure he has his reasons.
Circling back to the starting point, i dont much care for people yelling Bad writing when it was clear what they were getting into from the Start, nor do i think it is justified here
