@Louis-1988:
- Yes because One Piece doesn't jump all over the place, right? Dressrosa is paced so well.
Dressrosa is still paced better, but it isn't perfect, of course. Dressrosa breaks it's main characters up and has subplots here and there, but it's still tied overall to Doflamingo. Right now the 1v1s are kind of random, since we'll have to see recently introduced characters fight, but it's nothing compared to XYZ shinigami we sorta know against ??? Quincy we saw for 3 panels.
It's a problem, and I'd love to hear the debate once this arc wraps up, but Bleach is worse right now.
karin might still have a role to play in the story, but even if she doesn't it isn't exactly plot breaking.
That's the problem right here. Why isn't she plot breaking? You were talking about all these loose ends being tied up, but one of Ichigo's family is not important enough to be featured? Karin and Yuzu formed an important part of Ichigo's life and environment, and being Shiba Isshin's children could place relevance on them. (Maybe Ichigo could have rescued them lol)
There's too many damn characters to keep track of.
That's because the structure here unlike Soul Society and Hueco Mundo is protect instead of rescue. Yhwach and his Quincy are the aggressors/invaders here, they are the ones driving the momentum and plot forward and it's our protagonists duty to respond accordingly to try and thwart while they attempt to figure out Yhwach's end game. It's fine if you dislike it, but it's dishonest to say there's no structure here.
Summarize this war for me, please. Besides "this person fights this person" x100. There's no overall story line, or plot direction. In SS, it was a journey to somewhere, so we could say, "We fought this guy to get closer, so now there's another guy to get past to get to where we wanna go" There was something driving the story forward, from one fight to another. There's nothing wrong with not having a rescue arc, but now this war is just one fight after another without any story connecting them.
I for one like that Kubo takes time to showcase 1v1 battles, otherwise you end up with the Marineford/4th Great Ninja War formula where there's a treasure trove of dream match-up potential and you end up seeing only snippets of or the outcome of the fight if you're lucky. I would have liked to see "Kakashi's Rampage" vs. the 7 Mist Swordsmen or Curiel vs. Moriah.
Focus 1 on 1 with characters that we care little about is one of Bleach's big problem. Added to the fact that each of his fights are one volume long. In marineford war was a chaotic affair with thousands of people charging at each other, of course people are going to be here and there and fighting many people at once. War according to Kubo is people lining up and choosing a partner to Shonen One on One duel.
Ever think that may be because… gee I don't know... the fact that Quincy aren't primarily swordsmen?
Yeah! Quincy use bows! Er, And Alphabet powers! Like Flaming fingers, and imagination and super strength and balancing and dimension warping and cheering!
I do kinda miss the hand to hand sword combat. Even though Kubo wasn't particularly good at sword choreography. Without that to fall on. Kubo has to use strategy, and that involves brain work, and then I start wondering why everyone keeps explaining their secret powers to their enemy. I could just ignore everything in Dragon Ball and watch Toriyama's neat fight scenes, but Bleach's Thousand Year war arc hasn't that kind of fights.
Also, you're probably busy dueling the entire Bleach thread, but you haven't addressed my complaints on Bleach as a whole here. It's under the spoiler tag. And I want to add something extra here. Bleach characters are largely devoid of interesting characters. Ichigo himself has barely any distinct personality. Bleach characters are ruled by cool, and they either have a serious frown, or eyes wide open "shock". And a half-hearted comic relief chibi face.
