Yeah, and Charizard should be a flying around too rather than having his feet planted in the ground, Ganondorf should be able to float, and Falcon should be in a racing machine, but hey we're all cool with that. There are limitations that are inevitable when moving characters over to a smash game, but certain creative decisions are aight. Just give Ridley a few extra jumps and a good up B and he'd be sufficient. Or, Mugen's brought this up, maybe some mix of mid form Other M Ridley. I don't really care whether or not Ridley's in the game, but the reasoning for not putting in Ridley is just strange, especially when melee featured ridley in that cutscene working out fine and that the compromise they've reached means that people will avoid the pyrosphere as with Wily Castle and probably Gaur Plains even more so this time around.

Or, best solution, Furby Ridley.

Well actually he does have a point. His main concern isn't that rigley is too big just that if he is scaled down and can't fly and is not menacing then he is not Ridley anymore. He wants to accurately portray every character (even though he is fucking up big time with ganondorf) and by accurately portraying Ridley he's worried that more aspects of the game must be changed. It's an excuse but still better than he's too big

Notice that the Melee intro and the Brawl mod uses Ridley's old good 'I'm a skiny space dragon' design were 4 uses Other M's 'Do you even lift brah' fucked up duck face design.

So clearly, it's Other M's fault Ridley isn't playable.

Pic of the day. You'll need to link the 3DS version to the Wii U version to get them to work together. Luckily, this is easy. On the 3DS version, you simply select the Wii U option, and select the 3DS option on the Wii U version.

This is what the screen looks like on the 3DS version when you link it with the Wii U version. We included this hoping that it might work as a remedy when you don't have enough controllers

I find the reasons for not including Ridley kind of odd, given what we've already seen in the Smash Bros franchise. He talks about wanting to stay true to their normal portrayal, yet concessions have clearly been made - Ganondorf has been a Captain Falcon clone for three games in a row, Ness uses abilities that he can't learn in his own games, and characters like R.O.B. and Captain Falcon had moves that were completely made up. I've never owned R.O.B., but I'm pretty sure they couldn't shoot laser beams or fly around with rockets that were attached to their base.

Being able to fly for an unlimited amount of time in their home series didn't stop Kirby and Meta Knight (and Charizard, technically) from being able to make it in, every character has had their scale adjusted to some extent (Palutena goes from at least twice Pit's size to being the same height as him without her proportions changing, which looks odd when they're side by side; Mewtwo should be about five or six times the height of Pikachu), and Ridley's wings weren't particularly big in Super Metroid or, heck, even Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

I just find it kind of annoying that, as long as Sakurai directs the series, it seems like Metroid (and Donkey Kong, and Zelda (to a lesser extent, but having the roster for one of Nintendo's biggest series remain effectively unchanged for three games in a row is an strange move)) is going to get screwed over as far as the roster is concerned (also the stages - there's more to Metroid than lava-filled caverns).

I don't see this few of sakurai's as being one he's had since the begining. I'm pretty sure Ness as an exception is becaus he's been it since the first game. My only thought for ganondorf is that, like falco, he was introduced as a clone and so to change him to drastically is like making a brand new character and it has been stressed how hard that is to do. That said, Ganondorf does deserve being replaced with a new version of himself. Replace him with toon ganon i say.

I understand sakurai's point however that mod is a really good way of showing how ridley could work.

Smash Bros official facebook account just confirmed Mewtwo will be available as paid DLC, most likely later than people who buy both versions. You have to log register both version before the 31th march to get it for free.

The page says:

"Mewtwo DLC will be available for download in Spring, 2015. Mewtwo DLC may be available for purchase in the future.",

So oddly, still not 100%… I'm sure it will, but nothing official yet.

About the whole Ridley thing and authenticity of the characters we already have:
Ness has, since the beginning, been the sole Mother representative. In Brawl, we got Lucas, but he's gone now, so it's back on Ness' shoulders to rep Mother. I see him more as representing the whole series which is why he has PK moves he can't actually learn in Mother 2.
For this reason, I don't consider Ness a good example of not representing correctly if we allow that he's repping ALL of Mother.

Ganondorf….. Yeah..... He's really off.... I mean, maybe Sakurai is worried about people who liked how he used to play? Don't want to change it too much? I dunno.

One thing tho. He LOOKS right..... That might be what Sakurai means. Since the play styles have to change, at least the characters should LOOK right, and he thinks scaling Ridley down would require changing him too much.

Also, I don't agree he shouldn't be in Smash, but I get what he's saying. That picture illustrates to me how wonky Ridley would look, even if scaled down to only Bowser's size. That does not look good or natural, and I definitely don't like it as a representation of his character.

It's only one possible depiction, and the point is more that you can tell that it's Ridley. He's still samus' fearsome rival of sorts. Maybe not as imposing as if he were larger, but it's still an accurate depiction. Compromises a few areas? Sure, but I think most players could accept that over having him be a boss on a stage and avoiding the stage as a result

The Ridley matter is clearly just a matter of it being metroid so no desire to give a fuck.

The koopalings vary in sizes and that's a factor that plays into who they are and how they fight. But since it's Mario, fuck consistency, make them all the same.

And saying Ridley wouldn't be menacing without flying or being gigantic just tells me you don't know shit about the metroid games.

When Sakurai says they're not working Paid DLC, he means other than Mewtwo.

A Paid version of the Mewtwo DLC is inevitable, especially because it says the "Free Mewtwo to people who bought both games" thing is actually a LIMITED promo. Yeah, if you register one of the games after 3/15/15, you don't get Mewtwo at all. Nintendo won't let that stand. They won't just sit on Mewtwo forever and make him unavailable to anyone getting the game late.

However, since the initial way of getting him isn't "Paid" DLC, when Sakurai refers to Paid DLC, I don't think he's counting Mewtwo at all in his assessment.

So when he says they aren't currently working on or planning "Paid" DLC, he means beyond Mewtwo. I am positive of this.

I don't LIKE it, I want there to be DLC. I think Capcom style on-disc DLC IS bull, but I don't think all DLC is built that way. The current package for Smash in both of it's forms feels complete with regards to the roster, they have a wonderful number there. So Sakurai, please, NOBODY would complain about DLC At this point.

Give us some more newcomers!!! Maybe once the paid DLC starts being a thing, and Mewtwo becomes one of them, make the paid DLC come out in waves of 2. One Newcomer, and One Returning Veteran?

Wave 1: Mewtwo* and Chorus Kids
Wave 2: Wolf and Dixie Kong (Or maybe King K. Rool!)
Wave 3: Lucas and Bayonetta
*Price of pack discounted for those who already got Mewtwo from the giveaway like they discount Wii U VC games if you already have the Wii ver.
I'm also assuming that Snake and Ridley are both persona non-gratta due to the former being 3rd Party and Nintendo not wanting to pay Konami, and the latter due to Sakurai's recent statements, whether you agree or not, he seems steadfast against Ridley playable.

Maybe make the pack include Blood Falcon, who plays EXACTLY like Ganondorf does now… and the pack comes with a complete rewrite of Ganon's moveset...

That way, both parties are covered. People who liked Ganon before can gravitate to Blood Falcon, people who want Ganon to play like.... Ganon... get their wish.

I'm pretty sure it just means Sakurai either is saying random stuff or he's being shady on purpose. Really no point in wondering what he "considers" paid DLC or not. Also if there is going to be character DLC, I would assume the most logical initial inclusions would be the characters that are like, already basically finished and working in-game and have no "omg it takes so much work to make a character" excuse. In other words Ice Climbers and Lucas.

Ice Climbers would be tricky due to his "No system exclusive characters" rule, which is why I didn't mention them in my post above.

It's not a matter of finishing the work on them, it's a question of whether or not they can even be made to work on the 3DS or if Sakurai will make an exception and allow them to be Wii U exclusive.

I already said a few times that I was not convinced at all by the mods trying to show that Ridley could be playable (and I like him). So, I completely agree with Sakurai in this case.
But if you want to believe that he's lying and that he just hate Metroid…

Anyway, regarding the DLC, I don't see any reason not to believe what he said. Maybe it's the english interview that isn't clear, but in the french one I read, it's clear that he's talking about DLC AFTER Mewtwo is released.

I think the decision will be made after seeing how the 2 games sold by the end of the year.
IMO, we will get DLC next year (September at the earliest). Hopefully newcomers mostly (I don't care about the cut veterans, I'd rather have Isaac/Fiora/Bayonetta).

Not really. I mean recently nintendo have shown they are more than ready for DLC and have done it well (unless you mean the fact that they do it well is what is backwards). In the case of smash bros i think it's a sakurai thing. Smash is done. He wants to go off and make Kid Icarus Stillrising or Duck Hunt Redemption or whatever. But i feel like he does not want people to work on smash, characters especially, without him.

I still feel like lucas and wolf should be re-added as dlc though, especially wolf with a new starfox on the way.

Apparently, Rosalina got Nerfed, while Ganon got buffed.

Luma takes longer to respawn and can no longer attack during Rosalina hitstun, including when she's thrown.

Ganon, meanwhile, has had lag reduced to some degree on a plethora of his attacks, making them safer.
