Okay like
Not supporting GG doesn't make you a SJW.
I never said it did. Read what I was responding to.
Stop thinking this is a war between gamers and socially progressive people.
Isn't that what you think it is?
GamerGate accepts people regardless of gender, race, color, and/or creed. It's just being painted as "evil cishet white neckbeards!!!" regardless by those against it
What we are is gamers against corrupt journalists.
There aren't two sides (because The opposing 'side' isn't organized and forming campaigns afaik).
The opposing "side" is those journalists and the people who attack us. We're fine with people being neutral and staying out of it, though.
To be fair, they probably mean the crazy ones who don't actually believe in equality.
That organization is like totally meaningless and nobody cares about them. They are nothing. Nothing.
So an organization aiming at helping women get in the gaming industry (what GamerGate's accused of being against!!!) is nuuuuuuuthing. And their money isn't worth anything even though the profits are going to charities. Got it.
While you cannot truly sum these up in simple waves without it centering on the academics only covering privileged white women (summing up is especially difficult for current feminism which pieces together race, gender, sexuality, and romantic minorities and their relation), our generation of activist as a general principle subscribes to a more intersectionality-based value system. One which is actually well supported by academia– though we do not require ivory privileged pillars, which have betrayed us in the past!-- and is by its very nature inclusive and aiming to address holes and gaps in previous "waves". There are definitely clashes: minorities not being properly represented is an issue forever, people within these groups can have disagreements about issues, etc.
But yeah like if you don't know what's going on with this stuff, just please either do a lot of research on it, or just don't talk about it.
Funny how you say that when the vast, vast majority of people I've seen spouting this are "privileged white women".
@Purple:
What I'm hearing is a very dangerous tone from the movement then. It's only continues to confirm our belief that your whole stance is not about gaming journalism ethics and a simple "my way or the highway" platform, which, if that's truly what you believe, then I suppose we're all in agreement about the movement then.
It is clear that what you want is not journalism ethics but simply picking and choosing whoever happens to be anti-GG and trying to coerce them into becoming pro-gg. Escapist? Anti to Pro is what makes them not attacked? IGN staying out of it despite being notorious for shady ethics? This isn't a movement criticizing ethics. Its only purpose is to bully its way around
Wat.
The Escapist revised their ethics policy and (so far) have been standing by it. They also aren't censoring GamerGate discussion (positive or negative; people are free to express how much they hate it, or how much they like it, without fear of being banned). And as an added bonus, they've been trying to see both sides of the issue. There are a lot of articles against GamerGate, definitely, but they're not automatically trying to demonize us and make us out to be just a bunch of woman-hating neckbeards who hate all women forever and run on liquid misogyny. Yay, Escapist!
IGN, for all their shadiness, somehow wasn't in GameJournosPro, wasn't one of the sites that posted a "Gamers are dead" article, and hasn't been censoring discussion. We'll be going after them too (assuming they don't change anytime soon), but at this point, we're mainly focusing on Gawker and the like. Rome wasn't built in a day, after all. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
i'm pretty sure like 80% of this would go away if zoe and all the websites signed a meaningless paper that said "I'm sorry!" on it
That might've worked in the beginning. But at this point, they'd have to fire a lot of people too.
@Monkey:
"SJW" was a term people used for dumb teenaged extreme internet leftists,
Yep! That's where the term came from.
@Monkey:
but GG (among others) have of course decided it works just fine complaining about literally anyone that makes them uncomfortable (read: pretty much anything) and very much ruined it in the process.
The anti-SJW sentiment was around waaaaaaaaaaaay before GG.
It was used an ironic term, then people "reclaimed" it, and it only got further driven into the ground.
There are definitely people who over-use the term, but it is an easy shorthand for these extremists.
Why are people even caring about the money donation to the Fine Capitalists or whatever?
That´s the oldest trick in the book.
"I am not a rapist. See, i just donated money to an association that helps rape victims! I never did it before and the first time was after i was accused of being a rapist, but does that really matter?"
"I am not racist. See, i just donated money to an association that helps fighting racism! I never did it before and the first time was after i was accused of being racist, but does that really matter?"
Because it's extremely difficult to prove the negative here.
"You're misogynists!!! Oh, you're not? Prove it!!!"
How would you expect me to do that? I can show you that we donated a done to charity, I can show you we're diverse, I can show you we report harassment (even when it's against those who hate us), I can show you how a freelance journalist reached out to both sides of GamerGate and we didn't drive her out because "o no a woman!!!", heck, there was a thread on /v/ awhile ago asking if they'd rather play a game made by a man or a woman, and most people said that they didn't care as long as the game was good.
What what kind of proof would you need?
@Monkey:
There it is again lol.
Do you really think you're getting Fair And Balanced coverage from the sites being accused of corruption in the first place?
- So the bold, are you saying there are female/minority members in this movement, er for lack of a better word….
It's where #NotYourShield came from.
that are against female and minority representation in games? Huh?
Most of us think a game being good is more important than filling minority quotas, but would definitely be okay with better representation.
