I haven't really read the manga. But I might check it out when I feel like it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion

In the movie it makes more sense because he's literally the only one he could talk to.
Isn't it the same for the series as well? He couldn't muster the courage himself to talk with Rei after finding out about her, his friends had left town, Asuka was in a comma (and not like he could properly socialize with her at that point), Misato creeped the fuck out of him and Gendo was well…Gendo.
In this environment comes some guy who offers him unconditional love and affection, so Shinji, desperate, lonely, on his breaking point already, latches onto him immideately.
-
So… Who's the best female character in this?
I really like both Misato and Asuka.

I´m surprised there was no thread for this.
Actually, there's been at least 6.
And I just merged them.

I guess the fact that it took place within a single episode is what really annoyed me. It would've been a lot better if they somehow introduced him a lot earlier and built their relationship up, screw the plot. Not to mention he's the last angel, too. It could've worked better to me.

So… Umm, who is that in the hand?
Kaworu? -

In what? Anime(and End of Evangelion), Rebuild Movies or Manga?
Anime -> Asuka is the best! Ritsuko is the Worse!
Rebuild Movies -> Ayanami Rei is the best. Mari is the worse!
Manga -> Ayanami Rei is the best, with Misato and Asuka really close seconds! Ritsuko is the Worse!–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Yep, the hand is Kaworu!
I must confess, although I consider myself a huuuuge fan of Evangelion, I've only seen three films and they're all Rebuild movies.
And really… I found Ayanami kinda boring... :(Asuka's really bright in this doomed world and along with Misato, they really give much needed sense of fun and hope.

But yeah, I agree Mari is the worst.

Can someone explain the appeal of Asuka in the tv series? I just found her to be an unbearable attention whore.

She had legit reasons to act like this.

Rebuild movies are really cheerful, aren't they? One of the most depressing characters in TV series brings fun and hope…

Amazing.Oops…
I just felt they were relatively straightforward.
I'd watch Asuka's battle sequences over Rei's any day :)Maybe if I watch the anime series I might see them differently.

And I don't really think the new films are that cheerful.
First one was pretty gloomy throughout.
Second film is not only my favorite from the series but one of my favorite movies, period. Perfect balance of life and death in my opinion.
Third film... I don't really know what to say about it LOL -

Rei is for meditation and philosophical discource on identity.
Asuka is for battle scenes and pictures of crushing loneliness.
Misato is for penguins.tl;dr Original = must see.

I'm not asking why she acts as she does in the story, I'm already aware of her reasons. I'm asking why the audience loves her. I just can't bring myself to like her at all.

She is mother of all genki-tsundere girls. They existed before her, but they are all inspired by her ever since. If you like those, you like Asuka.
You either like her, or like Rei. Then you tell other people who you like, and battle them till death. -

Third film... I don't really know what to say about it LOLCool that you liked the second movie of Rebuild, because that movie took most of the things from the manga! The movie is really really well made! I would have liked that they had took the third movie from the manga as well, but at that time the manga was still ongoing.
Talking about the Rebuild movies again made me realize that I don't remember them very well. I will soon re watch them.

Can someone explain the appeal of Asuka in the tv series? I just found her to be an unbearable attention whore.
She is basically the best of all of the other girls! Yep, she is tsundere and to much outgoing, but removing the melodrama with Kaji she is a good character. Of course you have to remove all the pseudo psychological dreams of Shinji where she appears and some parts of the End of Evangelion.
Look at the other girls:
Rei doesn't have screen time! and with all the mystery they incorporated in the story, Mystery that was really badly done, she as a character is incomprehensible! And just to throw this out of the window, she isn't a clone of Shinji Mother!
Misato is a bitch!
Ritsuko is a super stupid and incurable bitch!
Kaworu(that isn't a girl XD) is just super weird! And Shinji reactions to his weirdness is even more weird. All of the above(and any other girl that I forgot) has serious psychological problems, problems that make them super inconsistent and make a lot of their scenes just for Shock value.

Best girl right here.LOl, Yeah if we go by that she is definitely the best girl! Or maybe the schoolmate girl, whats her name … Hikari Horaki. Maya Ibuki has less screen time than even Rei and isn't she horrible killed in End of Evangelion?
I don't really remember the details in the TV anime, but didn't they explored Asuka past? Didn't they showed that her mother not only hang herself, but for a long time thought that the doll was Asuka and the real Asuka was just an impostor and even tried to strangle her because of that. If they didn't showed that, or at least if they didn't showed it well, than the all stupid strangle symbolism in End of Evangelion makes no sense. -
…
What kind of deranged version of TV series did you watch where is almost no Rei, and no Asuka mother soulless adventures?
It was most depressing and very long part of the show, Shinji with his "dad doesn't love me" is nowhere near that.…and again, Rei has no screentime, has to be bait. Rei is the main character.
How is this a bad thing.
They stink worse than geese.

It's not an Evangelion discussion if it doesn't end in waifu wars.

In the beginning of the show Rei get a lot of screentime, mostly about Gendo liking her but not Shinji, but when Asuka appears she totally becomes a side character! Than later in the Clone incident she gets focus again, just to become a side character all over again. Even in the movie End of Evangelion she mostly does nothing until the part where the instrumentality project begins.
You probably didn't want to say "Rei is the main character" but "Rei is one of the main characters". Let's just say that Rei turns into a kind of Sakura of Naruto. She is a main character, she still there but does absolutely nothing of importance for most of the story.
About Asuka mother soulless adventures I remember them, what I don't remember is if all the content was only in the manga or if it appeared in the anime as well. You know I didn't read and watched those a few weeks ago, but in a long time so I could be mixing things.

…
Rei is a main character. She is mother of humanity and Shinji. You may not see her on screen, but everything in the show happened because of her and according to her plans, and in the end she puts everything to rest. Shinji doesn't have any choice here. World doesn't have any choice. Even Adam doesn't have a choice but to get there and fuse with giant Rei. And I'm barely exaggerating here.
Even if there are parts where she does nothing, it's because she did everything important already. -
Misato is for penguins.
! and offering minors sex! and Electra complex!
I'm lead to believe that every psychologist and psychotherapist got wiped out during 2nd Impact.

Even if there are parts where she does nothing, it's because she did everything important already. But than you're giving me reason. She doesn't have that much screen time! That was the only thing I was saying.
About it being her plans! It wasn't! She didn't had any plan at all, and she in reality didn't even cared about all that. The first impact happened because of Adam and the second impact would happening because also of Adam and Nerv not her!(Am I confusing the numbering of impacts? I believe not, but If I'm doing it forgive me in advance).
Note that Shinji had a choice, in reality the most important choice in the all story. It was Shinji that chose what would be the destiny of Humanity.
Those old guys(or was just one of them old?) from Nerv shrouded in mystery, planned everything to make Rei unite all of creation into the "soup" of life. Shinji father faked to be working with them but instead he was gonna ask Rei to destroy all the world. Rei in the end chose Shinji to choose what she would do, for reasons that were really badly explained in the anime and End of Evangelion movie. -
As for all of your Waifu wars.
Here, witness the best waifu as other waifus watch her in awe and fear!

Rei is Yui+Lilith. Lilith caused First Impact, Lilith created humanity, Lilith created scrolls by which evil people wanted to organise instrumentality, Evas are clones of Lilith, Reis are vessels for Lilith.
Without her, Adam would live freely making angels from rocks. In the end she woke up, took all her children, packed all her things into lcl and flew away to explore space in a huck of eva-01 taking part of Yui with her. She only asked Shinji if he wants to destory the world, then explained to him that people can come back if they want. Shinji didn't chose anything here, he was guided by hand till the very end.And all of that is a metaphor.

! No, Rei is just Lilith! Yui is in the EVA 1!
! The things didn't happen as you're saying. Adam was the one that arrived first in Earth and he should be to one to create live forms that would inhabit Earth, but then Litith appeared and created humanity, probably due to an error, because it should only one of them should had arrived. Adam then created the angels, including him, to go find Lilith and merge with her and be just one "creator". That was the first impact.
! Later humanity found the scrolls(that they say is made by Lilith), that just tell all the story and not what to do next, and Lilith and Adam that were in a state of hibernation, so basically the first merge didn't worked well. Humanity grabbed them and turned Adam into a fetal form and that transformation is what made the second impact and woke up the angels.
Humanity knew that the angels would again go after Lilith to merge with it, and so they prepared a lot of ways to make the merge be in their best interests. I wouldn't call the other guys "Evil" given that they wanted to be perfect, wanted all of humanity as part of the soup of life. Shinji father is the one that wanted to destroy everything.
Rei was just observing everything and doing everything that Gendo told her to do, but later she got close to Shinji and decided to do what shinji wanted instead of what he said her to do. She thought first that he wanted a world without suffering and so also the soup of life, but than he told her that wasn't what he really wanted and that he wanted the world like it was, and so she remade the world in the exact same manner.
The final decision was totally made by Shinji. Nor Lilith nor Adam cared about what would happen after the merge nor neither of them were against the merge. They are more like impartial superior beings that were just observing and trying to understand humanity given that humanity enclosed their minds in a human like vessel. -
Tho, the new character introduced in the second movie, when I first read her name in the ANN article when she was first announced, I laughed really hard. Her name honestly sounds like a Mary Sue character name. "Illustrious"? really? It's Like "Ebony Darkness Dimension Raven Way". "Lets stuff adjectives in there to make the character sound cooler" lol.
People have made the argument that Mari is a total Mari Sue… though whenever they do I have to scratch my head because really, she does not fit the requirements at all. For one thing she gets beaten to a pulp in every fight she's in. (Well, except that one time where she won by self-destructing her Eva, but... yeah, she won by self-destructing her Eva.)
When it comes to Rebuild, I liked the first one, I loved the second one… but the third one just has me scratching my head at what the hell Anno is even doing at this point. I mean there were still things I liked about it, like how I feel it did a very good job of conveying how Shinji reacts to all the crap that happens without spending half the movie on him monologuing about it, but in terms of the direction the story has taken… Where did all that even come from?!
-
…
! Angels are humans of Adam. He didn't create them then, but he would. After Lilith crashed into Earth, his spear activated and put him into hibernation.
! Rei is Lilith soul in Yui's body. EVA -01 is Yui soul in Lilith body. For all purposes, they are one and the same ever since fusion, or at least linked.
Gendo and Seele had basically the same plan for different purposes: Gendo wanted to unite with Yui, he didn't care for humanity.
Seele wanted to force humanity evolution. In the end, Gendo failed.
! But Seele suceeded, because third impact in the scrolls described exactly like what happened every soul conbined in the black moon, every cell dissolved.
And it would happen whether or not Shinji was even there. Later, when Lilith left, humans were free to do what they want. Shinji decided to come back.
He didn't decide humanity fate there, just his own. Mother/Lilith talked him into rejecting instrumentality in what appears to be psychotherapy session of last
tv series episodes. -
…or it will end with rain of anti-anxiety pills and two hours long session of "Omedeto!"
No no no we both got it wrong.
You see, there will be this giant cruciform in space and it will enter the giant space vagina in the giant naked Rei's forehead, then space Hideaki Anno will be born from that very vagina and congratulate us showing us random real life footage of Evangelion cosplayers standing in the street.
People will ponder the meaning of this till the end of time, but the actual answer will be that
! he simply hates us all.
-

He didn't decide humanity fate there, just his own. Mother/Lilith talked him into rejecting instrumentality in what appears to be psychotherapy session of last
tv series episodes.! No, humans are creatures of Lilith! Adam would probably create something else, something that wouldn't be so "imperfect".
! No, Rei body is basically the same as an EVA, an artificial body made with Lilith body, not Shinji mother! Kaworu body is also the same thing as Rei! The only connection Rei had with Shinji mother was that Lilith created all humanity and so Lilith(Rei) created Shinji mother, and that Gendo created her in the image of Shinji mother.
! Yui, Shinji mother body and mind, were totally turned into LCL and entrapped into the EVA where she merged into its previous LCL, just like Shinji one time did.
! Gendo didn't wanted to unite with Yui, he wanted to destroy the Gods, meaning Lilith and Adams and all humanity with them, because he wanted revenge about what happened with his wife. He also made Rei in the image of Yui(but even then she is physically different to Yui), because he is a mental unstable guy that was mourning the death of his wife. Before knowing Yui, he already were a jerk(that was put in check due to her), but after her death he went totally crazy.
! Yep, turning everybody into LCL would happen, but it would need to be the decision of somebody that controled Rei or Kaworu. When they knew that Gendo was not playing for their team, they sent Kaworu to merge with Lilith, take control of it and make what they said. After that failed they sent military forces in the hopes of catching Gendo, stopping his betrayal and forcing the impact.
! The psychoterapy session of last TV series episodes and in End of Evangelion, isn't his mother doing nor Rei, but All is doing. Yep, is head in the anime was that screwed up! Rei only were there trying to know what was that he really wanted. After really knowing what he wanted she would take the necessary actions to guarantee that would happen. -
People will ponder the meaning of this till the end of time, but the actual answer will be that
! he simply hates us all.

I like how most of the arguments going on here about the backstory of the series are all things that were never even actually explained in the show, movies or manga, and require having read explanations the production team has given over the years in outside sources to explain random visuals they sort of threw in largely for the WTF factor.
Nadia, FLCL and Gurren Laggen are all better series. …and FLCL is only six episodes long.

And the reason why people liek Asuka is because her bi-polar behavior was funny and etertaining as hell to watch, and she's a pretty well-written character.
She was probably my favorite character in the TV series.
-
Is it just me, or are the characters not really meant to be likeable? I mean really, I don' t think that was the point so it's not something that should even be critiqued. They are meant to reflect all the shitty things we hate about ourselves so we can wallow in it and occasionally hope for some kind of redemption. One of the things I actually liked about the show considering how catered today's versions of these characters are.
-

! That's the one or so I am told. Didn't get a chance to read it yet.
Nadia, FLCL and Gurren Laggen are all better series. …and FLCL is only six episodes long.
Nadia's ends on an almost as infuriating note as the original Evangelion. However, the first 17 episodes might be the best series Anno has ever done.
