In 2002 the story was in Alabasta/Jaya/Skypiea though.
Where did you catch up?

It's hard to tell when I caught up. The anime and manga during Enies Lobby were neck-and-neck. It was after Water 7 but during Enies Lobby. It could be as early as Chapter 380, or as late as 420.
The timeframe is fuzzy. I started watching K-F in 2005. When I ran out of their episodes (they were midway through Skypiea, probably around episode 170) I joined up with them after lurking for some time. Then, looking for more One Piece, I ended up finding my way here… where I also lurked for some time, mostly downloading other subs I found. The I can probably narrow down the timeframe to "after Gear Second was animated" but "before Rob Lucci and Luffy fought, and before Gear Third was a thing". I'm pretty sure I can also recall some other fights being read before I watched them animated, including Franky's. And Zoro's three-headed move thing was new in the Manga at the time, too. That should narrow it down somewhat. If pressed to guess an exact chapter, I'd have to estimate 408, simply because I recall Franky's hair and Monster Chopper being very new at the time. Opening 6 came out shortly after I caught up… which really narrows it down.
Finally signed up for AP a couple months later when Gear Second was animated. Grabbed it as a name. Been active in the community since, although I usually take breaks and then binge these days. I haven't watched an anime episode in years; ever since Thriller Barque, I've exclusively read the manga. In fact, I still haven't seen the ending of Enies Lobby (Merry's Death, Garp, etc) in the anime. Probably won't until K-F catches up and I do a rewatch.

Man, that was some serious Columbo stuff right there!
Cool, well let's go for 408 then (which contains probably my favourite ever Cover Story panel btw).
That's Chapter 408, "Monster Vs. Kumadori", released on the 24th of April, 2006.

The first new chapter I read. Wow, that's hard to remember.
I didn't begin with my newest chapter until Impel Down. I'd been watching subs, and I'd read most of the volumes translated online. I almost forgot which chapter it was until I saw the cover page again.
Chapter 543: Strawhat and Blackbeard
That panel of the two of them facing eachother. Just is etched in my brain. It's so good. (and of course that freakin' cover page with Sanji, busted a nut laughing) The fact that Blackbeard then in the next chapter still has the guts to ask Luffy if Sky Island was real? He's just insane. That's why he's shaping up so well as a villain in my opinion.
It was such a crazy time. I fully remember reading Ace's/Blackbeard's fight, but I hadn't read all of Impel Down yet as I decided I wanted to be current while catching up and filling in the blanks. So I had the full impact of what Luffy meeting Blackbeard meant, I knew that Sanji was separated from Luffy and was surprised to see him getting chased by Okamas, but I had no idea how Blackbeard and Luffy had ended up at that crossroads. Needless to say I stayed up the rest of the night reading the thirty or so chapters I had yet to read. (At the time I had just finished reading the Strawhat's separation, and I think after blubbering through that I was trying to skip forward far enough to see them reunited again, lol I was so wrong.)
-
Caught up in 2011, and I'm pretty sure it was Chapter 644, "To Zero".
-
Cool beans, thanks for providing straight chapter numbers.
You guys are both on the board.

I watched few episodes on some german channel more than a decade ago, but Ididn't get hooked up. I wasn't even speaking german back then.

Cool idea for a thread.
Me personaly? Started watching anime in very late 2008… or very early 2009. Somewhere around new years, anyway.
I caught up with manga in the late august. And, fittingly enough... First "new" chapter I read was 554.
-
So sometime around Marineford?
Yeah something like that, the end of impel down, beginning of the MF.
-
Well technically, I watched One Piece waay back in 2004.
It was the 4kids dub that I watched and I actually liked it.I only got to watch like 7 episodes before it was taken off the air. I think it was covering the Baratie arc because I remember watching sanji with his derpy ass voice. So after it stopped airing, I kinda drifted away from one piece for a while until around 2006. I had found out that my high school's library had the first 6 or so volumes, so I read those and was amazed at how it was alot more violent and awesome than I remembered. (I used to think that 4kids themselves made one piece, since I never bothered to look into the show's history.)
After I read the volumes, I once again drifted away from one piece, since I had no way of reading past volume 6 or watching the anime. So finally we get to 2011 and I had been re-watching Dragonball, when I heard that One piece was at it's half way mark and that a time skip had just happened. I was "Seriously?! Only half way through?! (At this point I was well aware that 4kids had been butchering and censoring the anime version) So I decided to watch the anime subbed. And I instantly fell in love of it.
Especially with arcs like Arlong Park and Alabasta. So for where I caught up, the manga was at around the middle of fishman island I think. Because once I caught up to the anime, I continued the story by reading the manga, because I was really impatient about having to wait a week for one episode. :P
-
Pretty sure that my first time reading a new release was chapter 515, adventure on the island of women! Couldn't get enough of Luffy's hijinks… "Where's my hat?" (while completely naked) "Bag? You're pretty weird. Those are kintama, duh." amazons proceed to get sparkle eyes
Man, that was a while ago.
edit: Oh, hey. That's the same one as you, RobZ. Neato.
-
I started watching the Anime in 2004, stopped watching at some point, then picked back up around 2009 or so. I started reading the Manga when Dressrosa started. I had let the Punk Hazard anime episodes build up after somewhat losing interest during the first half of the arc.

Lol yeah, I also remember Sanji and his extremely nasal, Brooklyn accent in the 4Kids dub.
So when you say half way through Fishman Island, are we talking somewhere in the Sun Pirates' flashback?

Looking over the chapters I think it was 697 when I started the Manga. Memory is fuzzy, but I believe it was Law's battle vs Vergo and all the talk of Kaido that prompted me to jump into the Manga and ahead of the Anime.

I was checking the dates of the anime episodes of Amazon Lily, it started on July 5th, 2009. I'm sure I watched one or two episodes of Amazon Lily then I started reading the manga, so I probably catch up with the manga on the 551, released on July 27th, 2009.

Yes, actually, I remember when I was watching anime and got around the episode 150. I got curious about what happens later so I decided to skip hundreds of episodes and watch the last one.Unfortunately the last episode was the one in which Iva-chan was introduced, and I was very disappointed, I remember thinking how OP will become crap, how the new animation style is crap (I mean just look at Iva), I wondered where the hell are the Strawhats, will they be replaced by these wierd Okamas, etc. I almost stopped watching OP after that.
-
The anime started water 7 in 2005, which is when i started watching the sub, and i started the manga as well at that time and started from water 7 even though it was way past it, so around Chapter 323 i think.

When the first episode aired here in Germany and the manga was released… might be nearly 15 years now or so.
I read it weekly since chapter 380 or so, though. -

I spent years watching Pokemon and Dragon ball daily on RTL2 without even knowing the language. Hell, that was more than 15 years ago :D -

I started watching one piece around 2008 after my sis got me hook on it. Caught up to the manga at chapter 525 "The undersea gaol, Impel Down" on Dec 5 2008. I stop reading at the first chapter of the timeskip because I got bored of reading on weekly basic. I continued reading again when the manga was at chapter 699.

When I started reading Bleach around 2009, I hated the OP's artwork. My friend told me to give it a try. Then I slowly started watching all anime and I was hooked. But I started reading manga only recently. I started from Punk Hazard arc. Now this is the only manga I am following with interest.
-
Started reading in American Shonen Jump in 2003. Didn't realize how much farther ahead the manga was in Japan until around summer 2005. I caught up with Naruto first though in September 05, then got busy with school. Caught up with One Piece in mid June 2006. Not sure the exact date, but it was around 417 - 418 I believe…not sure on the exact chapter. It was during Enies Lobby, definitely before the Buster Call started, which I distinctly remember.

Started watching the anime until marine ford arc and couldn't stand the hype and to wait for the episode every week

Started reading when Thriller Bark got to an exciting part.
Caught up to the manga's live chapter on June 1, 2008, at chapter 483.

Hi again.
Christ, this takes me back- I was what, 16 at the time? It was that chapter where Brook slashed that spider-zombie thing - chapter 454 the wiki says, so April 2007, but likely not the 28th given how slow uploads could be. Man, that was back when you could barely find a good scan at all. I was reading all my manga through MSN groups until site reformatting or some such rendered them untenable.
Dumb fact -I almost stopped reading this at chapter nine or whatever was the one with the treasure chest guy. It was entertaining to me but seemed to be tapering off from the focus
See ya

If i remember correctly, first i watch the anime in 2003 (Alabasta), and then in 2004 begin collecting the tankobon. Caught up with the weekly update manga in 2006, in the middle of Enies Lobby arc. So i think its chapter 400, 20 February 2006.

Despite being silly, I actually caught interested when Four Kids started showing it in the states. It got me hooked enough to start buying the volumes, which was up to eight at that point. Once it ended part way through skypea, I caught up online by reading the chapters, which when I caught up they were being attacked by Kizaru. I stopped for a while and waited to read up again. When I started again they were doing the Luffy flashback. Unfortunately, I was spoiled about the White Beard and Ace death, but didn't stop me from loving it. I've been reading it weekly ever since that point, as well as collecting the volumes. No regrets.

So basically we're looking for somewhere inside the Ace and Luffy flashback huh?
Do you remember anything more specific about that chapter that you caught up with (I'm assuming it was almost simultaneous with you being spoiled about the deaths at Marineford)?
