So i've been watching the english dub of sailor moon now during corona, and i had always heard that the english dub was utterly awful and to the point of parody…But it seems fairly solid to me? I mean some of the name pronounciation sounds a bit wonky like when they say Mamoru for instance. But overall it feels a lot better than i had heard.
-
If they're saying Mamoru, you're watching the new unedited dub they did recently, which is decent, not the old censored one from the 90's.
For the old dub you want Serena and Darien, not Usagi and Mamoru.
Also Amy, Raye, Leetah and Mina instead of Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako. (And yes, Amy and Ami seem like the same thing but they're pronounced differently)
And the friends were Melvin and Molly instead of Umino and Naru.
THis video also showcases some of the RANDOM editing they'd do, like not showing the lunch she'd made and saying the riceballs "muffins"..
Also they genderflipped Zoicite, he was a girl in the old dub. Couldn't have any of the gays after all!
They also genderflipped one of the later villains and made the lesbian scouts "cousins", and just opted to not do the gender bending final season at all.
They didn't actually manage to erase the gay relationship, they just made it incestuous.
And the classic "talent" clip.*
*talent in this case means biggest boobs.

Oh yeah, and they also added PSAs to the end of every episode. To help pad out the run time after they censored stuff.

Well that explains it. I got the good dub then, it's not quite the Swedish nostalgia dub but i'll take it. Besides that one stopped after the second series so beyond that i'll have nothing to compare it to. And apparently there is even a sailor moon movie. Blew my mind that i had never heard about that one in it's heyday.
-
There's THREE Sailor Moon movies. R, S, and SuperS. The R movie thinks its a DBZ movie.
There's also a live action series.
Also, Lisa says "Hi Wolfy! Who is you're favorite scout?"
-
Well damn. Guess i've got some catching up to do. Also Ami is obviously best girl. With Mako as a close second. And Jadeite being run over by an airplane is the best anime death of all all time. Not that anyone asked, just putting it out there
-
I'm watching my way through the Viz dub as well. Up to SuperS now. The show, as a whole, is still pretty good, though it doesn't thrill me as much as when I was a kid, which I guess is to be expected. And at least this time I'm getting the full genuine experience, more or less.
Also, Ami used to be my favorite Sailor scout, but I dunno. I think now it might be Rei. Mako is also great in her own way.
As for the movies, I've see R and S. For R, I swear they just copied the villain's design from one of those twins from the filler arc. S was a much bigger improvement, even if the villain still sucked.

This show is just visually interesting. The constant changing and constrasting betwenn these weird muted and psychadelic neon colors just makes everything pop, and the characters all have their own identity with little poses and tics and all that just sets them apart. I mean sure it is obvious they reuse assets all the time, and that the animation was done on the cheap. But the design choices make it look so beautiful still. Like even the constant transformations are memorable and enjoyable enough to be sat through once an en episode without getting too annoyed. And the soundtrack is just great, how every thing has it's own distinct theme melody. Even there i know there is like 10 melodies that get reused, but when you got ten golden tickets then you can use that shit all day long and it'll get to me every time. I'm like -Oh theres the villain melody. Pavlov has truly made me his sailor moon bitch. TLDR Sailor Moon has aged super well
-
Also, I never realized how great the humor is in this show.
-
It just had everything, at least Season 1.
Even the social criticism aspects aged well, and that series is almost 30 years old!
! Luna: So now you're going on a strict diet?
(Serena nods, then notices that Luna is drawing.)
! Serena: Huh? What are you doing?
! Luna: Drawing my favorite hero.
! >!
! Queen Beryl: Jedite, what news? (An image of Jedite appears and reports.)
! Jedite: Very good news, my queen.
! Queen Beryl: Yes, I must commend your efforts.
! Jedite: Thanks, Queen Beryl. I am only following your plan. You have tapped a bottomless resource!
! Queen Beryl: I know. The humans are so vain.
! Jedite: They are. They expend an absurd amount of energy on crazy diets of fanatic activity they call 'fitness.'
! Jedite: Ha ha ha ha. Excellent. More humans for our energy collection!
! ________________________________________________
! Jedite: You will be pleased, my queen. I have excellent news about our mission.
! Queen Beryl: Your last few attempts have failed abysmally, Jedite, but go ahead. Give me your report. Perhaps you can redeem yourself.
! Jedite: I have discovered a new energy source, one that is sure to be most rewarding. Many young humans lust after scholastic achievement and will do anything to succeed, expending enormous amounts of valuable energy.
! Queen Beryl: It sounds promising. And how do you plan to gather this energy?
! Jedite: By something the humans call a 'computer.' We shall turn their own device against them.
! Queen Beryl: Hmm… Carry on.
! Jedite: I won't fail you, my queen! Can't watch anything but the german dub though, it's more hardcore than the english version. It has awesome lines, like Usagi's family fatshaming her ("it's baby fat" - "you don't learn enough and eat too much" "that's because you're such a glutton! "I think you don't do enough aerobics my dear" "crying won't get you anywhere, just try eat less"
versus this whitewashed thing in the english dub:
! Kenji Tsukino: Serena, don't be ridiculous. You are not overweight. You can't skip meals.
Ikuko Tsukino: It's bad for you.
Sammy: It's just half a pound, so what's the big deal?
Kenji Tsukino: Half a pound? That's it? That's the big crisis?
Ikuko Tsukino: It's nothing, sweetheart. You'll work it right off…
Tsukinos: … on your hundred-yard dash to school.
(Serena is insulted.)
Serena: Oh… you don't care! None of you! -
Serena just sounds off to me, but then again our dub called her Annie so i have no leg to stand on when it comes to making up dub names.
This may also be one of the few shows where the huge amount of filler is part of it's appeal. Heck at times i enjoy the filler more than the actual story. It has the highest amount of character growth and quiet moments after all. It's like bizarro world compared to how filler usually works.
And speaking of that i got fat episode, i just really enjoy Jadeites paper thin J namned disguises he always uses. He uses more disguises and aliases than any one else but he puts zero effort into any of them. It's like i'll put on a hat and call myself Joe Daite that'll fool them for sure.
-
Joe Daite. That is legit win!
-

Tuxedo Mask fully covers his identity with a domino mask, and Sailor Moon has 5 foot long pigtails in all three of her identities and no one figures it out "Disguise" is relative. I figure its Team Rocket rules. Its generally supposed to fool the characters, not the audience, and we assume its more complete in reality.
And yeah, the filler is what makes the show, especially once you realize the manga burned through each of the villains in a chapter each and had the entire group formed by chapter 8. It's where all the actual character development and comedy comes from, and why the Crystal remakes were so dry.
Well damn. Guess i've got some catching up to do. Also Ami is obviously best girl. With Mako as a close second. And Jadeite being run over by an airplane is the best anime death of all all time. Not that anyone asked, just putting it out there
Good taste.
They're also the cutest non-canon couple.
For R, I swear they just copied the villain's design from one of those twins from the filler arc.
The movie and the filler arc were in production at the same time, so… I imagine its just the same sort of thing as the DBZ movies where they drag out whatever is happening in the main anime currently and throw a slightly different coat of paint. Like when we got another Saiyan, another Namekian, Frieza's brother twice, or MORE androids. (Or Garlic Junior who went from the movie to the show filler...) And then eventually "the TRUE legendary super Saiyan" three times.

Well, after hunting down those clips youtube is now recommending me things.
-
Well that isn't weird at all. I interact with all my cousins like that. Good ol' American values.
Also, is it just me or does Jadeite, Nephrite and those guys uniforms look kind of like a cross betwenn school uniforms and old timey army uniforms? Are they the villain school boys to the hero school girls?
-
Whelp, my youtube is cursed forever now.
-
Of course Endymion could return the joke, he's a father, the "dad joke" flag has been triggered.
-
The trailer for SME Part 2 has been released
-
So we finally got thru season 2. It wasn't bad but god almighty is that little pink haired kid clogging up the otherwise well oiled machinery. The villains were kind of a mixed bag, the crazy sisters good, floating crystal ball with a cloak perfectly fine. But prince no personality didn't really do much for me. Oh well from now on we're going in to unknown territory, should be fun
-
I've got only four episodes left for the whole series, and having now watched the Sailor Stars arc for the first time, here are some thoughts:
! -Didn't realize the first six episodes of this season were just going to be filler with them bringing back Nihelenia. Kinda lame.
-I do like how this season mixed things up a bit by (finally) getting rid of Chibi Moon and even writing Mamoru out (his Tuxedo Mask appearances were always kind of annoyingly obligatory).
-Not a fan of Sailor Moon's new outfit. The wings and pink bubble shoulder pads look so tacky.
-The Sailor Stars fine, but could've been executed better. A new group of Sailor Guardians who have their own agenda and come into conflict with Sailor Moon's group? Yeah, haven't we done this already?
-Honestly, I think I like Usagi and Seiya's romance more than Usagi and Mamo. I guess they had their moments, but Mamo never seemed that big into their relationship and it felt like he was just along for the ride.
-So…what is going on with the Sailor Stars' genders, biologically-speaking? There was that one episode where they were bare-chested, so I thought they became biologically male while in their civilian forms, but then changed to female while in their Sailor Stars forms. But then I think they said later on they're still biologically women even in their civilian forms? I'm confused.
-The fact that Sailor Iron Mouse, Aluminum Siren, Lead Crow, and Tin Nyanki were all being mind-controlled makes their deaths really dark and sad in retrospect. -
2nd preview for part 2 with the Outers transformations including Saturn's.

I'm considering getting the Manga for my birthday. Which Manga version do you guys prefer?
-
I read eternal edition and it seemed like a good set up, few books with a lot of pages. But keep in mind that the manga is nothing like the anime, so if you haven't read it before maybe start with one volume and go from there.
Sailor Moon S is so far pretty interesting. The villain voice is a bit unfortunate, but visually the whole mad science teacher really works. The new attack for Usagi is hilarious tho, that super spinning cracks me up everytime

New trailer is out.
-
I can't wait. I'm happy they got the viz cast back
-
Two new Sailor Moon movies have been announced. The 2 movies will be covering the final arc of the series, Stars.

Been a long time coming but we've made it to the final season/ I can't wait to see. Eternal was abit meh (it would've worked better as a series than movies but i digress)
-
I'll probably just watch it sometime in the future for nostalgic reasons. Sailor Moon used to be one of the first series that I had consciously perceived as anime and wanted to watch.

There's also like a multi hour documentary over what they had to go through to find this horror but... you just want the animation, that's at 1:43:48.
-
It's amazing how you could say this was an Adult Swim sketch without changing literally one second of it. The overacting seemed so deliberate, the never-ending opening giving "Too Many Cooks" vibes, the dancing breaking out of nowhere, even the animated bits seemed intentionally funny while the jokes were intentionally not... you can't tell me this was not a parody.
-

Woahhh so the actual pot has been unearthed, i watched abit of the doc before skipping to the "main attraction" but i gotta say i admire her dedication to this project she deserves a raise.
As for the pilot OMG the whole is such typical campy 90s tv, like this is something i could see being aired on early Fox or something. It has its own charm tho but I'm glad ultimate the actual anime ended up becoming a hit tho even originally edited in the vein of this pilot here lol.

Viz put up the entire original Sailor Moon tv (including R, S, Super, and Sailor Stars) series and all three seasons of Sailor Moon Crystal up for free to watch on youtube. Also this is the Japanese version of the show.
