SQUARE ENIX - Single Player RPGs are dead?

Ya'know… I've never beaten a FF, but if there ever was one I wish I did... it'd have to be XII. That game's great, I'd go as far to say it's the best in the series. With the exception of the protagonist it just hit everything right. Great art direction, great music, good voice cast, and yes I enjoyed the combat. I really wanna go back and play that game through someday, I dropped off around 60 hours as I tend to do with all RPGs. I'd say FFXII is the best game I played that I never finished.
Man, FF's really are subjective, I absolutely despised FF XII lol

@Print:
That said, I do listen to the soundtracks all the time. I'm a massive Final Fantasy music fan, to the extent that I travelled to Stockholm in 2007 to attend the world premiere of the Distant Worlds tour, and then went to the 25th anniversary concert in 2012 dressed as a moogle. It's a big deal for me, even if I'm not quite as huge a fan as I used to be. So my memories of these games are also heavily filtered though their soundtracks, almost in their entireties.
Yeah man, I love listening to The Black Mages, FF music is always great.
Those who fight further is a personal favourite.
-

Me too. It was funny, when you mentioned FF villains earlier I went over the list in my head (Xdeath never gets enough love btw), and I noticed how XII was just an empty black void.
I may not be particularly fond of Seymour and his KILL WORLD TO SAVE IT shtick, but he's miles better than Vayne, king of the realm of blandness, lord of leaving no impression whatsoever
-
I loved Final Fantasy XII because it really suited my style of playing (I was the kind of gamer who'd try exploiting the game at each available juncture to get weapons I shouldn't have yet, such as repeatedly fighting the Werewolves in the Giza Plains with Vaan & Penelo early on) but I admit I don't see it as a 'Final Fantasy' in the same sense as the classics, or even the games up to X. The plot was fun but thin and many characters were really undeveloped (though if you were like me you were distracted by Balthier and the Cids) which really stands at odds with VII for me, for example. I guess I view it as a kind of spin-off. Still one of my favourite games ever, but different to what came before.

I'm actually not so hot on the Black Mages because a lot of the time, the fun of the melody gets drowned out in the noise XD
I think I own physical copies of the OSTs for VII and VIII somewhere. It's bad enough that when my friend and I approached Brighton Pier at the weekend, a shining blur of light and games and people and noise, we referred to it as the Gold Saucer and sang the theme the whole way along the pier…right down to singing the Corel Ropeway theme for the approach. It's not sad, it's awesome, honest.

Ah man, ExDeath, that's a villain right there.
Seymour was ok, his design was pretty good, especially some of his later forms, and he didn't have the worst back story ever. Also the FMV where he summons Anima alone would probably prevent me from disliking him.
I always found it weird that they opted to have Jecht as the FFX villain in Dissidia.
Vayne makes Ultimecia look an excellent baddy, that's saying something.
-
I don't really know who most the FF villians are outside Dissidia. But Golbez has a cool design, and I liked his powers. As a villian, I guess whole the dark/light thing that contrasts with this brother is a bit boring. I also liked Cloud of Darkness and Ex-Death in that game too, despite now knowing what or who they were either.

Same here. You should give the Star Ocean games a try if this is your thing(though it might be dated to commit to one today). The Second Story is the fan favorite and I'd recommend it to any casual newcomer, but I'm partial to the third one more for this exact reason. I had more fun creating and customizing really good gear and seeing the results more than the playing the story itself(the characters were bland in some ways, but in battles they were just fun as hell to use and had a bit more movement and personality!)

I'd say I do this with a lot of places, but then, it's really not just Final Fantasy. I ended up using the Wacky World music from Lost Vikings for part of Central London the other day. The soundtracks of my youth, sticking with me like pancakes to other pancakes.

I tried getting Star Ocean 3 because I had heard this but I never got round to playing it due to moving house and having a backlog of games as well. I'd like to still, but it's really just a matter of finding the time. Perhaps when I am employed, I'll feel less bad about taking a few hours out every now and again to do just that (like how I never touched Skyrim when I was previously unemployed and started playing it on the odd evening after work or on free weekends).

Final Fantasy XII: International Zodiac Job System is the best main Final Fantasy game if you actually like playing video games and not just watching cutscenes. I can understand how that might be upsetting for some Final Fantasy fans though. throws burning cigar into everyone's fuckin lap

I was curious to give it a try but it never made it here. So.
eats cigar

The Zodiac Job System version is miles away so much better than the original, but even the original is exceptional (which makes IZJS just super good really in my eyes– definitely the best Final Fantasy game though not my favorite title). The sole flaw in the product is the inability to change jobs, meaning you get put on the spot and have to decide the second you get characters. But that's fine.
Giving the job system to the license board really gives it vision and brings in so many great elements from other titles and it just, in general plays so well. Also, fast forward button for fights, if you're doing boring grindy stuff? Heck yeah.
-

Especially given the Gambit system essentially let the game play itself in most cases, provided you had it set up correctly. Though I can sometimes find something relaxing in grinding, I am ashamed to admit XD
I get what you mean though. Its story might be lesser, but as it a game, it really was a joy. Just the freedom of it all - I felt in charge rather than railroaded, and I could play the game in the way that suited me best. Plus, it catered well both for the casual gamer, and the obsessive gamer like me that would chain creatures for hours hoping for rare drops.

Don't get me started on Star Ocean 3. Only Star Ocean game I played. It comes on two-discs, the first disc is… just fucking fantastic. Easily one of the best JRPGs I ever played, it was so strong and loved every minute of it.
Then you switch to disc 2.
It's literally from the very start of the disc like some other developer made it and... it's garbaaaaage. It literally shat itself. I think I could only stand like 10 hours of disc 2 then gave up. I have never played a game that so sharply declined midway through, it's amusing that it is literally perfectly on its own disc. I can just pretend that disc doesn't exist and the game ended on a cliffhanger.

Star Ocean 3 also suffered from a disease most notably found in Kingdom Hearts games… namely the 'never quit this game halfway through because if you ever go to pick it up from the beginning again the 10-hour-long intro before you get your first real level will drive you bonkers'. Yeah. Stopped a dozen or so hours in and could never go back because just thinking about how stupidly long the prologue is gave me the heebie-jeebies.
To bring this back into Final Fantasy territory FF13 also suffers from this except to a greater extent because I'm fairly sure you go almost the entire game before you stop getting tutorials for new junk they kept locked until then.
Also on topic: in case anyone ever had a craving for reading FF11 novels; don't. I picked up a few because I was interested in seeing how anyone could write a novel based on 11. Turns out you do it by having a group of generic adventurers run from location to location, randomly picking groups of enemies from the bestiary to have them run into and fight while giving them a goal that doesn't really make sense in context. Sorry, your Dragoon girlfriend has a Curse? Darn, if only there were some form of healing magic in this world that, y'know, instantly heals all status ailments. Hmm. Now it may seem like I'm harping on it but when the central connecting plot of your books boils down to 'girl got teh sicks, get plot coupon to cure sicks' you're scraping the bottom of the barrel. It's scary when the MMO itself has better writing and a more compelling plot than the spinoff novels.
That said I'm kind of excited for them to get around to FF14 2.0 novels. 14 has a much more solid and approachable plot than 11, and I think they could do a lot more with it.

Can you explain because the whole game is pretty much the same for the most part, unless you are talking about the shift in setting within the narrative… which is a moot point to be honest. Star Ocean was always pretty much about exploring the idea of an advanced civilization conflicting with a relatively underdeveloped one(and then going vise versa within the second half). It's never done quite well in any game, but I believe the games do ALOT more to make up for that.
I actually enjoyed the whole game. Not for the story or the characters. The reason I bought it up was for the content! The gameplay! The amass amount of customization. The satisfaction of reaching high levels with sweet gear you fine tuned yourself during the post-game to take down powerful optional bosses in dangerous optional dungeons. And not mention the in-game "Trophy/Achievement" system that pretty much existed before consoles started using them. I don't think any player in this age would commit to such a system these days, but it was incredibly rewarding as you unlock in-game features. Not even modern day Trophy systems do that!
So yeah, there's my argument. I don't feel it was necessary since your attempt at pointlessly bitching without detail could have been better ignored. But I like my Star Ocean games, so lynch me for trying to properly sell what makes the games great for me =:3
-
Was Star Ocean: The Last Hope International any good? I loved 1 and 2, never really played 3.
-
It's not imo. It took everything that made the series unique or risky gameplay wise and then threw it all out the window. Item Creation was streamlined to collecting drops and creating from a list of recipes you discover. It's terrible because you'll be teased on recipes for items you cannot create till very late in the game(and I mean during post-game), thus making the Item Creation itself system useless for the main campaign. And even then, I feel customizing isn't as deep or clear as the previous games.
The battle system is a hit or miss. I felt like the third game attempted to create this relatively balanced system that pretty much discouraged spamming of special moves like the first two games(not to mention other ideas that made battles strategic). In The Last Hope, it pretty much boils down to getting one powerful move and spamming the living hell out of it. I mean, it is actually fun to play at times but it loses its steam once you become reliant on broken/overpowered skills.
If there's a few things I like the game for, it's pretty much the homages to the older games. Roak becomes a setting in the story, and while the plot was really boring there… It was beautiful to see the planet in more detail than it was in first Star Ocean. Not to mention the remxes of SO1 and SO2's battle themes(and some dungeon themes), and the return of old generic enemies.
As for the story, it's pretty bad despite the parallels it makes to Star Ocean 2's Energy Nede. Not going to get into detail because it really is a convoluted mess for the most part. I could go on about the things I dread about SO4, but at this point I don't even consider it a tri-Ace game due to how outsourced most of the game feels. It's like they attempted to cater more to the "anime" JRPG audience and did all the wrong things(ranging from questionable, to extremely creepy).
-
That's a shame.
I'll just carry on with fond memories of 1 and 2 then.
(I played through 2 quite a few times. Had to in order to play all the characters!)

I wished somehow the sequel to the second game got a translation of sorts. It's probably one of the more unique SO games. It combines elements from an overhead Zelda game with RPG elements. It cool because the combination really opened way for tons of exploration. Here's a video showcasing several of the Field Actions you can learn.
Star Ocean 4 tried to bring this feature back, but it was underwhelming what little they did with it.
The game also made Item Creation more fun by measuring success rates by how well you play these little mini-games!
Last note: Blue Sphere was also remade btw…. but for mobile... so yeah. No chance of the west ever seeing this game. Pretty art tho. It's always cool seeing the SO2 cast a little bit more grown up. -

Wow, okay. Screw you too. I hated the second half of the game, that was my opinion. So sorry that by your logic that's "pointless bitching."
-
It was pointless because I had no reason to respond to yet another post of you pointlessly bitching(without any detail) over one of the hundreds of other games you never cared to finished. So yeah, it was my fault for completely wasting my time. Sorry but, it's my opinion too.
-
Both of you.
Cool it.
-
So…I've been playing Theatrhythm. I'm somewhat shocked by how much I'm enjoying this game. A little disappointed in some of the tracklisting, and the Event songs are usually pretty lame, but the core game scratches that Elite Beat Agents itch.

What is it with this thread lately and people becoming personally enraged over other people's opinions. FFXII wasn't crap but it wasn't so good that you need to personally attack someone for mentioning not liking it. (Edit: Crap I can't believe I just ignored my own advice. Pretend I said 'in my opinion' before the preceding phrase. Such an idiot smacks forehead)
Something Awful's Final Fantasy thread has the subtitle 'every Final Fantasy is the worst Final Fantasy' which could just be trolling but in a way it's true, just as 'every Final Fantasy is the best Final Fantasy'. The key point would be adding the words '… to someone' to the end. No two Final Fantasies are exactly the same, or even close to the same most of the time. About all you can say that applies to the entire series is that there are menus and you save the world and maybe there's some magic involved. It's entirely possible to like one Final Fantasy and not any of the others because the others are completely different games. It's so incredibly subjective that it always amazes me whenever someone gets upset at hearing that someone doesn't like Final Fantasy Insert Number Here.
When it's stated as an opinion, obviously. If a person was to say 'FF-whatever is WORSE/BETTER than FF-whatever else' then they deserve to be pointed and laughed at because those are opinions and should not be stated as fact.
RobZilla was correct, they are really, really subjective. So let's just chill.
-
JRPGs are serious business.
Except now they're poor for business. :P
-
jesus fucking christ, are you like the most tasteless man on this forum?

Remarkable.
RobZillas post pointed out his own subjective opinion. He was amused at how different opinions could be. No "XII sucks and people who like it suck " or anything.
Your response? "YOUR OPINION IS SHIT BECAUSE XII IS OBJECTIVE QUALITY"
Truly, a remarkably bad postI make it no secret that I find XII to be utter garbage. But I am perfectly aware that this is rooted in my own personal gameplay preferences, and that loads of other people find the Gambit system optimally suited for their playstyle.

I got bought a ticket for this as an early birthday present. So excited for it…it seems like a very different kind of performance to Distant Worlds, which had the unfortunate tendency to be a bit too overblown at times. Since it seems to be touring, I'll let you guys know what I think of it in case it happens to end up in your area :)
-
Almost exactly a year ago, I saw Distant Worlds in Paris. A bit too much XIII music, which I have no connection to, for my tastes, but it was pretty great seeing Uematsu himself join the One Winged Angel choir.
But that concert sounds interesting, especially the lack of DW overlap -

But I was aware of the battle theme, 'Blinded by Light' (which I actually really like) and that was the only piece of XIII music that was played at the DW concert I attended in 2011. There may have been more at the 25th Anniversary in 2012, but I don't really recall it standing out if there was.
I think the One Winged Uematsu thing is a concert staple now. He certainly seems to enjoy it anyhow XD

As far as I'm concerned, Blinded by Light is in a handful of songs produced for the entire XIII series that actually stood out. Archylyte Steppe and Sunleth Waterscape aren't too bad, and Saber's Edge is okay.
So basically the songs they put into Theatrhythm were the only good ones lol

I am incredibly envious, because this smaller scale concert is my favorite context for classical music, whether it be stuff I performed in, or watched. So I am pretty much seething here. I already have never been to a video game concert before (missing out on the Zelda 25th and every Distant Worlds). The arrangements are probably going to be really precious. There's also no way they can possibly cram One Winged Angel into it without sacrificing Uematsu's amateur hour operatics… but, say, a quartet performing it might diminish it in an interesting enough way so as to render it tolerable?
I am very interested to hear a writeup of this, so I'd like you to become proficient in western art music history, terminology, and be able to process and digest a concert so as to give me the most detailed report. I request it on my desk sharp come a morning in February.

No pressure then XD
Honestly, if there's anyone here who deserves to be at these things, it's you.
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing gets recorded by several folk in the audience, as happens with DW, though there's obviously the quality drop there. -

I actually greatly underrated Final Fantasy XIII's soundtrack when I played it. It has little in common with prior franchise entries, even ones where Uematsu was largely or entirely divorced with a separate composer in place (like Final Fantasy XI, XII), so it might feel unsatisfying if you expect his prog rock melody gripped style. But it has some really incredible motif variance amidst what feels like a lot of under-scored film soundtrack-like portions. There is sooooo much growth and travel, going in and out of electronica soundscapes that burst into straight up pop music one second, orchestrated tensity the next.
I strongly encourage anyone who thought FFXIII's soundtrack was no good to give it another listen and maybe try to do what you can to engross yourself in it, because it's kind of astonishing at times. It is also absolutely exceeding the limits of saintly patience to try to listen to the whole thing in one sitting, so I can understand if you think it sounds like the opposite of fun.
I have not heard XIII-2 or Lightning Returns yet, but considering how much of XIII working was due to how many people were really working on it, either may not hold up to it unless you had like the whole team back to compose and arrange.
-
My problem with 13's soundtrack is My Hands. Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing song that I listen to constantly… but it doesn't fit the plot at all. Eyes on Me, Melodies of Life, Suteki da ne, they could all be said to be the personal feelings of one of the heroines of the games they were from. My Hands is just... not. Isn't it supposed to be the theme of the love story between Sarah and Snow? Then why do the lyrics talk about a strong, progressive girl trying to overcome the feelings she had for a guy who wasn't worth them? It's not a love song, it's a break up song. It's an independent woman song, or rather it's a song about a woman trying to show how independent and strong she is without her man but she can't help but show a little weakness because she's only human and she really did have feelings for him at some point. Who the hell in FF13 is that supposed to be? The closest I could come up with is... like... Fang? Is she singing about Vanille, like when they're separated? Maybe? I don't know, but anyway as good of a song as it is it's definitely not a theme for FF13.
-
I may be grossly misremembering here, but wasn't the My Hands deal supposed to capitalize on Leona Lewis's random spark into the mainstream to capitalize on people watching American Idol and the X-Factor, IIRC? I agree wholeheartedly that it's a good song, but not really fitting in the FF13 context (unless it's about Hecatoncheir).
As for FF13's soundtrack, it's not my favorite, but there are some tracks I enjoyed a lot and I agree with Holy for the most part on this., and Archylte Steppe is one of my favorite pieces in the series (along with Dust to Dust). It is a complete departure from Uematsu's signature work, but it is for the most part, a very good sountrack. On the other hand, I loathe and detest that excuse for a soundtrack in 13-2. :P
-
"My Hands" was a little too late for 'Leona Lewis' shot to fame'. Leona's fame was pretty small with her song "Bleeding Love". Leona was actually a winner of X Factor in the UK, not the US. Sadly, American-wise, she hasn't had much fame outside of "Bleeding Love" and "Better with Time", and she was way past her 'X-Factor' fame when FFXIII came out. I think it was more, 'getting a vaguely popular yet quite talented singer to provide a song for FFXIII to get some commotion about the game' instead of 'getting people who like American Idol/X-Factor'.
Leona is a lovely woman though. I hope she benefitted greatly from that chance.
And I personally think 'My Hands' works just fine. I mean, the song DOES have to do with a break up or possible situation where her lover is dead, and how her body isn't ready to start life again without that person. It could easily be interpreted that Lightning or Snow isn't ready to live without Serah or Sazh isn't ready to live without Dajh. Yeah, it's loosely related, but I wouldn't say it's 'out of place'.
-
so is final fantasy X-3 happening or what?
-
Let's pretend it went to puppy heaven.
-

I'm really obsessive about lyrics in songs so this is getting super nitpicky but the lines 'sleep without the lights' and 'I'm almost never afraid now' suggest, to me, an abusive relationship since normally the emotion you feel when someone has left your or is dead is not fear. Maybe it's Vanille singing when she's separated from Fang and Fang used to beat her or something I dunno.
-

Um… I don't recall anything about Fang beating Vanille...
However, 'Sleep without the lights' implies the difficulty of having to go back to living life alone when you go to sleep. When you go to bed with someone else, you never worry about the lights being off when you sleep. Compared to when you live alone, you may have nights of doubt or fear, and have the lights on. Again, 'I'm almost never afraid now' is really about the pain of loss (whether through him leaving her or him dying). She's afraid to be attached to anyone in fear of losing them.
The entire song is basically her just saying, "Hey! I can totally take care myself! I can live on without you! I can go to work! I can live my life!", but crumbling to the ground when the thought of being with anyone else comes up.
I'm really not getting where you're getting the abuse thing from.Actually, I do. But I really don't think the song can be written the way it was, and honestly talk about something as tragic as a woman missing a relationship that was abusive. The relationship is written too positively. -
Um… I don't recall anything about Fang beating Vanille...

The relationship is written too positively. The Fang beating Vanille thing was a joke, sorry, I should have made it more obvious that I wasn't seriously implying something like that happened. Fang and Vanille are actually my favorite characters and pair from 13 and I would never seriously imply that there is anything but good emotions between them.
That said, after doing a little research, we were both wrong. Leona Lewis herself says in a commercial that it was the 'strong female lead' that inspired her, therefore making My Hands a song about Lightning. If we assume that Lightning and Serah were actually incredibly close when they were younger, maybe even sleeping in the same room and stuff, then everything kind of falls together. The song reflects Lightning's feelings around the time that Serah is drifting away from her and hooking up with Snow. Though she sees herself as strong, Lightning can't help but admit what a huge pillar of support Serah was and she wishes they could be as tight as they once were, but she's held back by not wanting to interfere too much in Serah's own personal life.
Fair enough.

Sorry for missing your joke.
Daps for Leona. I didn't know she actually wrote the song FOR the game. She did mention her interest in Lightning. Good shit, I like the song even more.

^ That's the video I was quoting. I think she wrote My Hands before-hand, since she just says it was a 'good fit'. But the implication I get from what she says is that she thinks it fits Lightning. -
The PS4 version of FFXIV is coming on April 14.

jesus fucking christ, are you like the most tasteless man on this forum?
Likes all the shit, dislikes all the quality…
Lolol I think you need to calm yourself down buddy.
I said I don't like FFXII, which was a fairly major departure from the classic random battle system in the previous FF games, it's not exactly the wildest thing ever, a lot of people didn't like the changes.
So I don't really get your issue here.
Thank you to both Getsuya and The Daz for taking my post as it was meant to be taken and indicating so.
