Precisely, Netflix is not for us. Netflix is for the newbie who wants to binge on old episodes to be more in the know about the current episode that is being broadcast.
Water 7 Arc- Toonami Talkback

Though this may seem counter-intuitive, I think an additional episode each week would actually be a great benefit for the ratings. The extra half-hour gives viewers more to latch on to each week, and that sightly speeds up the pace of the anime as well. While Toonami probably isn't ready for airing an additional episode every week, there has been a strong interest for it from new fans, at least on twitter from what I've observed.
I think it's best to see what happens in upcoming weeks now that things are starting to pick up. I think things will look up very soon.
-
OH YES! That would be marvelous for the One Piece on Toonami. Maybe when Space Dandy is done. ESPECIALLY since One Piece is relatively less expensive than Naruto or Shippuden.
-
How do you know if One Piece is less expensive?
-
Because Toonami said Funimation shows are less expensive, why do you think the initial lineup was filled with Funi shows? However the assholes at Toei might be stingy with prices though.
-
was their an episode this week.

They probably said that because the stuff FUNi usually licenses is mostly inexpensive (Deadman Wonderland, Casshern Sins) or obscure 13-26 episode shows in comparison to the largest shounen property ever in Japan. I also don't think Viz licenses much anime anymore. I believe the only new episodes of a show they're directly involved in and keep licensing is Shippuden, seeing as Bleach has been over for two years now. Not saying this is a fact, but if someone has any further knowledge on this then that would be wonderful.
I also think at one point Toonami said they don't want to air an additional episode of One Piece because it would cost them too much. If I remember correctly, one of their reps said Toei gets paid a certain amount of royalties each time an episode is aired.
-
Yeah, last Saturday episode #243 aired.
ugh. my tivo did not record it. i wanted to see the SP9 unmask so bad.
-
They currently only have one 6-hour block to work with. Why would they squander an extra slot to give a show more exposure than it's earned?

Where did this all go so wrong for two straight weeks?
That's disheartening and odd. These past 2 episodes have been a lot better than previous ones…
-
I find it odd that Bleach is doing so good in the ratings, pish newbie anime fans >>
-
…Sniperking will save us when things seem the most bleak.
-
There's no need to be worried. I can understand why some fans are, but ratings aren't everything when it comes to late night shows.
-
Wtf…. this is awful. Just what is it about One Piece that casuals don't like? I know Toonami said they won't yank it (which doesn't stop them from moving it to a later time-slot mind you, which would be awful for a show like OP...1am is late enough) but it's so disheartening to see it lose to some lesser known shows too. I understand its stands no chance to the likes of Naruto and Bleach, but damn, it can't even beat Blue Exorcist and Soul Eater either when they're on later? Those viewers are straight up avoiding OP. I thought Water Seven would change all that with it's general awesomeness, but looks like people don't give a shit about OP whether it's silly or action-packed and serious. At this rate, while they'll certainly finish airing season four.... I wonder if they'll bother to pick up season five. Eh...
Oh, well, I guess. I'm rambling. Guess we should be used to this by now.
-
Wtf…. this is awful. Just what is it about One Piece that casuals don't like?
It looks fucking weird and the anime's color pallete only makes it worse.
They need to package it next to Adventure Time, not in the middle of "serious looking" anime. Its a totally different demographic. Despite being a shonen battle manga, In the middle of other stylish action anime isn't where OP belongs, it needs to be with the surreal drug induced stuff they have elsewhere.
That the ratings DROP so dramatically and then rise again to dodge OP is pretty telling.
-
I've said this before, but I am confident it has to do with starting 200+ episodes in. During the Foxy stuff, the ratings were very high because the Foxy arc is pure action/games and you really don't need to know the characters to enjoy it. It was easy for new viewers to watch. Water 7 has very little action in comparison and is about the plot - for people who haven't had the time to get to know the characters (see Usopp's growth, realize that Robin was a villain at one point which also makes her betrayal and Aokiji's warning have more impact, etc), the story developments in Water 7 don't really mean anything. They just haven't had the time to care about the characters. I'm sure ratings will go back up once we get to Enies Lobby, as there is much, much more fighting/action.
-
I still disagree that JUST because the series restarted, uncut, 200+ eps in, that the ratings are down. People are just, for a lack of a better term, stupid. No action, no over-the-top comedy, no deal. I agree that the Foxy arc is easy to get into since it kicks into the main bulk of the games and fight early and it's a short, and relatively self-contained arc. W7 is OP's most drama-heavy arc, but it also takes a lot of time for world building. And there is where people just tune out. They can't appreciate the whimsy and imagination that goes into making the city live and breathe. They just want the action or comedy, and sadly, W7's action is far and few between since the drama is the main focus, and the Puffing Tom and EL arcs are where the action really starts to kick it into high gear. When you really think about it, that's what really sets most of the shows on Toonami apart from OP. Unlike Naruto, Bleach, SAO, BE, Soul Eater, etc., the world building is usually done in the beginning or when they go to a new location (which is not VERY often), but w/ OP, the crew goes to many different locations and they do dedicate episodes to just show off how the city works and such…and the casual viewer will just see it as boring, sadly. That's my take on things, anyway.
-
Pfft, once it reaches Enies Lobby, the ratings will go back up, you'll see.
-
Pfft, once it reaches Enies Lobby, the ratings will go back up, you'll see.
Ehh… I dunno. Doesnt seem like people are interested on the show period. People were saying Water Seven would make it sky rocket, but instead its gotten worse.
-
That's also true. I feel that DBZ was just more AKSHUN PAKD For their taste. One Piece relies more on Character Development and buildup and payoffs. Dragon Ball Z was a simple new beginning with new characters and a whole new plotline.
Actually I think there is something that can Save One Piece on American television for once and for all
….NETFLIX.
Yeah, Netflix. Breaking Bad got HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE after it got on Netflix.
This! This! THIS!
Netflix is the perfect place to get people into One Piece!
-
It's just too slow of a story for the casual Toonami/anime fan, you can't expect them to be attached or know anything about a character starting 200 episodes in. Nor can you expect them to go watch the previous 200 episodes. Which is one reason why Water 7 still isn't a huge success, not to mention the funky character designs and at times odd animation. But I don't think it has a lot to do with it starting at the foxy arc, it just doesn't appeal to a lot of the masses.
I also don't think Enies lobby will be a whole lot better either when it comes to ratings. That arc is slow as hell, especially at 1 episode per week.

Check this out
http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/28014.htmlAnime on Netflix seems to be gaining more importance than Anime on TV.
It wouldn't hurt to put up the first three seasons of One Piece on Netflix in the foreseeable future.

I think One Piece is already on Hulu Plus. Then again, perhaps more people subscribe to Netlfix than Hulu Plus. But Crunchyroll is starting to add the early episodes 20 at a time, and Crunchyroll is free. I watch Crunchyroll on my Roku, but I think it also has an app for XBOX1, PS4, and probably most other smart tv devices.

Whether it's slow doesn't matter, seeing how Bleach and Naruto right now are crawling in place and yet, they're getting great ratings. People won't watch simply because they think OP is corny. Whether it's fast-pasted or not.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Someone posting about this ratings situation. This really is hitting some people hard. I never seen such an outcry with bad ratings with a show.

I really don't care about the ratings, I'm just stating some potential reasons why the ratings were bad.

If you say so. Netflix killed video rental stores…I liked video rental stores. Plus, I'd rather not be tempted to watch an entire series on Netflix and then never bother buying it (I'm a collector, and some surprise w/ new titles is always a perk). I may have seen all of what's currently being released atm, but it was years ago. One other thing...my internet sucks. Netflix video for me macroblocks like hell and took me around 1 hour to barely watch 30 minutes of the pilot to Walking Dead (for example)...so yeah, if it can help OP, more power to it, I suppose...but I'll show support by buying the DVDs and tuning in on Toonami just for the sake of it.
I love video rental stores too! I'm lucky enough to still have one in my city, and a DAMN good one. Here's a tour of it. I'll put it in spoilers because most people won't care/it's really off topic. This ones for you, Demonkicksanji ;)
!
-
I find this all pretty funny. All of my friends only watch toonami for One Piece and Space Dandy. From what I know, they are interested and are eager to know what happens next. Adult Swim post all of their shows on On Demand the next morning. That is where I and my friends watch these episodes. I do not think that these viewings count towards the previous night's ratings. The initial ratings must not be the only factors that determines a show's popularity. That is my take in all of this.

Well, thanks for the link to that vid. It was a fun watch, and a nice walk down nostalgia lane. ^^
On-Topic: I'm still wondering when/if the ratings go up, what will be the actual turning point. Will it be the Puffing Tom arc w/ Sanji vs. Wanze, Franky vs. Nero, and Zoro vs. T-Bone? Or will it be the actual match ups w/ CP9 that'll finally get people invested?
-
Or will it be the actual match ups w/ CP0 that'll finally get people invested?
So it's going to take over a decade to get viewers invested? :ninja:
-
Honestly it may never get anyone invested. These last few episodes have been CRAZY….. and it's pulling the worst ratings ever. Obviously, episode content isn't really affecting jack shit when it comes to this show.
-

Oh you know what I meant. XP Either way, I'm hoping that the fights will get some people invested, hopefully w/ the Puffing Tom stuff since some of the early EL stuff can get a tad tedious, especially on a single episode, week by week basis.
-
I shouldn't have expected the Toonami audience to be open-minded about OP, like at all. It absolutely blows my mind how shallow and closed-minded some people still are these days. There are, no doubt, thousands of viewers who haven't even tried to give OP a single chance and have actively been avoiding it during it's time slot, just to return on time for Soul Eater of all things. I guess now it'll be Blue Exorcist instead though…
I have a lot to say and really feel like ranting about this shit, but I'm just gonna keep it to myself. If OP takes another massive dive again this week, then I just give up. Shit's getting fucking ridiculous at this point, and I'm quite honestly fed up with the American audience treating OP this way for so many years.

It is what it is. Not everything from Japan succeeds in America, unfortunately.
Let's just be glad its still doing great in Japan.
-
Wow this whole discussion has been so subjective it's ridiculous. Who knows why the ratings are like this, I think that requires more research.
I will say this: the whole reasoning of "Casual American viewers don't like this" is really BS, especially from people who are fans. I dunno, we all started as newbies, casual fans, and we liked it. Sure our "tastes" may be different, but to say this whole lump of the Toonami audience isn't as interested in it for that reason is kind of silly if you ask me.
People like "One Piece", enough people. The manga sales in America have gone up, and after debuting on Toonami the rankings on Hulu for "One Piece" shot up. It's even worth taking into account that even in the 4Kid days "One Piece" got good ratings on Toonami. Just something to think about.

Well said bro! One Piece is doing just fine.
-
Well… OP does tend to mostly always have the biggest drops. This is actually one of the first weeks in a long time where its maintained a good amount of viewers from Naruto. So that being said.... GOOD JOB THIS WEEK, ONE PIECE!

One Piece being at 1AM is part of the problem. Its hard to stay up to watch it every show on that time slot drops in ratings
-
thank you JDUB. i have not seen season 3 on so long.
-
One Piece being at 1AM is part of the problem. Its hard to stay up to watch it every show on that time slot drops in ratings
I don't really think that's the issue, because people are clearly coming back for Soul Eater and Blue Exorcist. One Piece is having the same problem it's had for years in that casual anime fans still associate One Piece with the 4Kids dub. They don't realize Funimation has had the license for about 7 years.
-
Wow, now that you mention it, yeah, it has been 7 years. Time sure flies, and also, Funimation's now dubbed more episodes than 4kids ever did, and they've been doing it longer too. In my mind the only thing that really kept people from realizing this was that big gap of time in which One Piece wasn't being aired on TV. Due to that, alot of people, even now, probably don't know that Funimation's got it now or something…even though 4kids as a company isn't really a thing anymore.
-
I don't think the casual viewer really remembers the 4Kids dub like that. If anything I'd argue it's the same reason most casual viewers dismiss OP, which is the art style.
-
I hope people aren't still using the 4kids dub as an excuse for the bad perceptions and ratings of One piece.
-
But I think that's it though. People say "I watched One Piece 7 years ago, and it sucked! Why should I watch it now?" without knowing that it's being handled by a total different company and is vastly different (and better) than the previous version. Casual fans don't get this whole license-hoping thing. To them, One Piece is same as it was all those years ago.
And yeah, it's crazy realizing it's been 7 years, especially if you grew up watching the 4Kids dub…
