I, for one, watched No Game No Life and I found it funny, even if it's dumb at parts. I'll keep watching hoping the whole "they are understimating humanity so we'll show them" becomes the fuel of the story.

I'm enjoying it as well, some bits really make me chuckle. I find the main character funny, don't judge me!
I also tried watching Mahouka, but dear lord the sister character is doing my head in. I just can't… :getlost:

^yeah, NGNL is pretty fun. A bit cliched here and there, but so far it's fun to watch for sure.
In other news, I finally got around to watching the first episode (and the OP of the second) of JoJo SC. And let me tell you, it blew me away. It looks like this could be my favourite this season.
-
How similar is this JoJo SC to the OVA?
NGNL has an excellent premise, but the problems already begin with that "chess" game. After all that boasting about how they are the greatest players ever, they then go and accept to play a game without looking up the rulebook first (or in this case, ask the opponent about the rules). This isn't how a decent player, never mind pro player would act. The jojo and phoenix wright references felt a bit forced and the random sim dating thing felt well, random. Otherwise it's a fun ride. Don't care too much about overdone fanservice and otaku stuff, it's pretty easy to ignore. Fanservice is pretty much expected from madhouse.

Last year I watched Nana, and right now I'm in the middle of watching Monster. Which makes this comment all the more amusing.
-
Madhouse = Number One fanservice studio lol.
But seriously, i'd rather watch more Needless than NGNL.About JoJo SC compared to the OVAs:
The OVAs are basically a "Best Fights Of Jojo SC" compilation that lack the style of the new adaption/manga and are very serious. The aniamtion in the first OVA (that covers the later fights of SC) is pretty ok, but the 2000 OVA is kinda bad. Do not bother with both of them now that we have DP's version. -
From the pacing so far, I really can't see DP skip ANY fights which makes me thing that this is going to be split into two 24 eppisode seasons or that blu-ray thing is a mistake.

NGNL…
Yeah, thechess gamemedieval simulator ends with an assassination? From a poisoned cup that was never part of the game? Honestly, this has more new rules as the plot demands than Yu-Gi-Oh season 1.Just gonna stick with HxH, JoJo, Ping Pong and maybe Mushishi.

Here's a list of everything that went wrong with the chess game.
As soon as they walk in, the other player described the game as "chess with living pieces". This is somehow good enough for someone who is a pro gamer, cheater and con artist. They decided to figure out the rules as they play along when it should be a basic right to know the rules beforehand. Note that this is a single match high stakes game, not some game with multiple rounds where they could take their time to figure out the rules. You could say they got cocky and assumed it was a chess game but I don't buy it.
A new rule is invented every 5 sentences.
The cheating is blatant as it could get. Blank is not allowed to make certain moves but the opponent has no such limitations. The mind control is obvious enough, the pieces change colour and attack their former allies, that is enough proof to disqualify the other player for cheating. Of course since they didn't bother to look up the rules that wouldn't have happened.
The morale speech, dating sim speech and revolt were all silly.
The game ends with the king being assassinated just like that. No foreshadowing, no actual possible assassin or archer type chess piece that could have done the move. Just a crappy single line about history.
Also the elf can use her mind control magic at long range so why couldn't she just use her poker magic at long range? Blank somehow assumes she can't without any basis.TLDR. There were no rules in that game. New and often stupid rules were made up on the fly. Yu-Gi-Oh season 1 made a lot more sense than this.
-
I have to agree. The conclusion of the chess game felt stupid and made up on the spot. To me it looked like Sora had all that planned out from the very beginning. Which makes his near-mental breakdown in the middle of the game redundant. It wasn't enjoyable whatsoever.
The latter part of the episode was pretty cool though. I really liked the speech Sora gave and the atmosphere at the end there- one heralding the coming of grand battles- made me nearly tremble with excitement.
On another note – I'm absolutely in love with JoJo SC.
-
Actually, the weaker parties in central historic conflicts were usually not the strong ones through being weak alone… Especially if every advantage they possessed was also possessed by the stronger party. Oh well, who cares... exchange the name of the kingdom with "otaku" and you get what kind of stupid selfinsert fanfic NGNL is from this speech alone.
The popular series of this season among the average anime fan show me again why I cannot trust 90% of people's opinions when it comes to this medium: NGNL, Mahouka, Mekaku, Brynhildr are all insultingly stupid.
Just gonna stick with HxH, JoJo, Ping Pong and maybe Mushishi.
This is the best decision.

Stardust Crusaders is definitely the best one this season imo. I also watch Black Bullet and Captain Earth and I find them quite enjoyable. I watched the first episode of almost all of them, and they were the only two I found genuinely interesting. Although No Game No Life is quite fun, but I haven't watched the latest episode of it, because I prioritize the two others. Oh, and Knights of Sidonia was one of the only ones I didn't give a try and it looks good, so maybe I will.
But JoJo beats all. I hope they won't hold a one year break between Part 3 and 4 and the rest like they did between 1&2 and 3, I want my JoJo animated!! :w00t: -
Another series that I think is great this season is Hitsugi no Chaika. Sure it's based on a light novel but the nice animation, Bones fight scenes and likeable main cast of characters have kept me keenly looking forward to every new episode. Also Chaika is freaking adorable whilst not just being a useless sack of moe which is painfully rare in anime.
I just feel like this series isn't getting enough attention this season when I think it's one of the best series that's airing at the moment.

Yeah, it's definatley on my top 3 this season, after Jojo and Ping Pong. I got hooked when the unicorn appeared.
-
Yeah, fuck it, I'm adding Jojo to my watch list. That first episode oozed too much competence not to. Plus the action will probably be a little easier to follow animated.
-
What the F is wrong with Fuun Ishin Dai Shogun? There's no animation in it. Just one freeze frame after another, hardly animated! I dropped it now after 2 episodes… Too bad, I was interested in the setting.
-
After a few more episodes, here is how I would currently rank the new anime I'm watching this season :
High : Haikyu, Ping Pong, NGNL, Jojo, Baby Steps, Akuma no Riddle, Knight of Sidonia
Mid : Captain Earth, Mahouka, Hitsugi no Chaika, M3, Matsutaro, Black Bullet, Brynhildr
Low : Nanana, Blade and Soul, Daimidaler, Fuuun Isshin, Mangaka-san, Mekakucity
NGNL is my best surprise of this season. The other anime I'm watching who started in a previous season :
High : Yowamushi Pedal, Diamond no Ace, Nobunaga the Fool, HxH
Mid : Nisekoi
With a special mention to Yowamushi which has been my most anticipated anime of the week since the beginning of the Inter-High. -

I also was interested in it, only then to find out it is nothing other than a ecchi slideshow.
-
I am able to bear a slideshow fight as in the One Piece Anime, but Fuun Ishiin is ridiculous, cause it's all the time.
My favourites this seasons are still Knights of Sidonia. And yeah NGNL, I highly love the colors in this piece, they are … different O_O (i like that)
-
To bad that Knights of Sidonia doesn't have any legal streams as far as I know and isn't getting any real exposure, while every other ecchi show always gets the legal streams.
-
Ping Pong met my expectations, it's really good.
-
^I ended up dropping Ping Pong. The story is interesting for sure, but I simply couldn't get used to that kind of art-style and animation. It does set the right atmosphere for this kind of story, but it just isn't my cup of tea.
I was thinking about dropping Sidonia no Kishi as well, but in the middle of skimming through episode 5 I found myself getting interested again and so I went back and properly watched the episode. It's still nothing too special but it's an enjoyable enough anime. For now I'm sticking with it.
As for the other spring shows; among those I watch, it's only JoJo, Daiya no A, and NGNL that I really can't wait to watch every week. The rest- stuff like Love Live, One Week Friends or that Shaft show- is just there to pass the time and keep me mildly entertained. -
I've been enjoying haikyuu and baby steps personally, as well as stuff like Jojo
-
Sidonia has been really good. Much better than the manga. The art takes a bit to get used to, but eveything else about it is amazing.

Yeah, I really liked the last two episodes, before that it was okay. I particularly liked the how the tension was conveyed and I actually grew to care about the two mains, which is nice… and yeah, it takes some time to get used to the art, it can look really off at times and the character designs are really same-y for some characters.

Good news for us Chaika fans there is going to be a second season that will air in October! Thank you based Bones I did not expect this at all.

Fast, that was. Anime, enjoying.

I loved all of ping pong so far, but the part of the latest episode where they play hitoribocchi no christmas' eve takes the cake, I watched it three times before even finishing the episode.
