! that doesn't seem to be the case, as Moffat is writing the first episode and the second one is written by Phil Ford. Unless they're doing a two-parter written by two writers, but I highly doubt that.

CosmicDebris, have you seen Shada yet? It's a partially produced episode from Tom Baker's era that never got finished due to strikes at the BBC at the time. Personally it's one of my favorites of the old stuff I've seen (which honestly isn't a whole lot =/ ). While there's a decent reconstruction that was made by the peeps at Doctor Who, it just doesn't seem to do the story justice. A lot of the climatic scenes weren't filmed, and it just has Tom Baker narrating the story over some still images.
Although there's a free animated version online with the 8th Doctor that I've heard is pretty good, but I recommend the novelization by Gareth Roberts, if you're a reader. The pace is nice and uninterrupted, and makes for a nice solid experience.

The next companion (not sure if naming her is a spoiler or no) definitely starts off better but then the writers kind of forget what to do with her and she gets shortchanged time and again. Massive waste of potential in my opinion.

Finished The Evil of the Daleks. Fairly interesting and complex story, and there is nothing crepier then a Dalek going "Frieeeeeend", let alone three of them at once !

While Rose was definitely the most annoying companion to come out of the new series, I kinda thought she was a little more tolerable when she returned in Turn Left.
I actually just finished Matt Smith's first series, and I'm still getting used to the new direction the Steven Moffat is taking the show in. I can see why a lot of the longtime Whovians I've talked to can't stand him and the 11th Doctor, but I think he's alright. I think he's a better showrunner than Jonathon Nathan Turner. Like Colin Baker, I thought Matt Smith was a little annoying because of him acting like a hyperactive little kid. But, he's kinda starting to grow on me. I was a little worried that Amy and Rory would end up being a lazy rehash of Rose and Mickey, but they're actually pretty likable too.
That's not to say that there haven't been bad episodes. Like with Eccleston's series, I thought there were a few good episodes, a few "..eh" ones, and a few bad ones. Though the worse one by far had to be Amy's Choice . As for favorites: The Beast Below, The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood, Vincent and the Doctor, The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang. And even though I really like River Song, I'm a little annoyed by how Moffat decided to bring back the Weeping Angels, so that's probably what kept me from enjoying that two-parter.

The next companion is far more likable than Rose… though I would have liked her more if they let her actually be her own character rather than having the script constantly remind us that SHE'S NOT ROSE BOOOOHOOOOOO!!!
…Thankfully they got over that little snag with the companion in series 4, and once you get to series 5 Russel T. Davies is no longer heading the show and so we are forever spared of his little Creator's Pet Rose... Which is not to say that Steven Moffat doesn't have a few blatant Creator's Pets of his own, but I somehow find them far less obnoxious than Rose ever was. Probably because he doesn't feel the need to repeatedly remind us how absolutely amazing they are every single episode.
Yeah, Rose annoyed me too. I didn't dislike her entirely, but I wasn't fond of Billie Piper's acting and she seemed to get away with doing all kinds of stupid things and still be revered by the Doctor for it, which then cast a very unfair shadow over Martha's season.
Speaking of companions, does it bother anyone else that Sarah Jane Smith was introduced as a lot more independent and brave character in The Time Warrior but since the 4th Doctor she was turned into basically just a whiney, clingy girl?

My opinion on the companions, I have been of the opinion that the companions have gotten better over time. Of the Davies era, Donna was the best by far, I don't think I need to explain why. Martha was great until she left, I hated what she became in her cameo appearances afterward. Rose I did not hate…but is definitely my least favorite as we get more and more new companions. Way too clingy and whiny now as I look back. Amy was okay I felt until Rory became a staple. The 3 of them worked so well together. I like Clara so far, but I feel just hasn't done much.
Now as for the 11th/13th Smith, I liked the biopolar nature of him. One minute he's the hyperactive happy child filled with hope and wonder, the next he's the grumpy old man who has lost all hope. What I hated about him and Tennant was guilty of this too, was when they would talk so fast you don't understand what they are saying.
I am looking forward to Capaldi because we are probably going to get something different than the hyperactive all cylinders doctor, something I miss from the Eccleston days.

I can kinda see why. Doctor Who wasn't really that popular here until the new series came around (At least to my knowledge), and Sarah Jane was only seen in three episodes.
I remember reading somewhere that Matt Smith took a lot of his performance as the Doctor from Patrick Troughton after watching Tomb of the Cybermen, kinda like how Tennant took a bit of his from Peter Davison. I can sort of see a little bit of the second Doctor in Smith, but I still think Troughton put on a better performance.

I wonder if maybe it's more of some people having an aversion to Steve Moffat's overall style that people have rather than the Doctor himself. Someone posted this blog about the problems with River Song. I was prepared to protest but I think he's mostly got it right. She was a much better character potentially than she ended up being by the end. There's something I have really liked about the tone and direction that Moffat has taken, but he does have the tendency to pile on mystery after mystery, drag them out, and then explain them all in a hurry in a way that doesn't quite live up to the intensity he was building.
Still, I don't get the vehement hatred from Moffat either. People acting like he's the worst thing to ever happen to Doctor Who….I have a feeling in 20 years people won't be saying that.

Yeah, it's all about familiarity. I don't think Sarah Jane Smith was really all that great either, but she was part of a long time period that made an impression on a lot of people.

When I watched Troughton I definitely got a feeling of familiarity from Smith's performance.
Since The Ninth is my favourite doctor, it's kind of hard for me to dislike Rose. She's not the greatest companion ever, but she didn't annoy like she seems to have other people.

Yeah, Donna is my recent favourite too. She's pretty much the only one (of the main recent companions) who kept the Doctor in check and so made their dynamic feel less one-way. Bit of a shame she also went the way of 'there's something on her back super special about her' because beforehand she was kind of working with Ten on her own merits. Donna was awesome, and I really hate what happened to her!
If he counts, I also found Wilf very interesting - such a different companion from the others (if he counts). Though I also have a soft spot for Bernard Cribbins who narrated a lot of children's TV over here and so is very familiar.

Well, as far as New Who goes, I honestly was never that bothered by Rose. I mean, she's not my favorite or anything and she was pretty bitchy to Mickey (and, in retrospect, I guess she was pretty bitchy to other people), but I never outright hated her.
Martha was nice, but kinda bland.
Donna was awesome (as was Wilfred).
Amy was pretty enjoyable, but she did a few things I didn't like and I think she stayed as a companion for too long.
As dorky and ineffectual as he was, Rory was still pretty awesome.
Clara…well, I'll wait till the end of her run, but I like her well enough. Though, like Amy, her interest seems to have waned a bit now that her role as the "mystery girl" appears to be over.
Also, Leela is my favorite companion of Classic Who.
My favorite companions of Classic Who have to be Jamie, Jo, and Ace. I've only seen one season of Tom Baker's run, so I obviously cant' say anything about Leela, Romana, or K-9. I don't think Jo is one of the more popular companions in the fandom, and I can kinda see why. But, I really liked the chemistry between her and the Doctor, even though she could get annoying by doing the exact opposite of what she was told. It was the first time in Pertwee's run that we really got to see the Doctor act as somewhat of a father figure, and was something I felt was missing with Liz.
I've also been meaning to listen to some of the Big Finish plays, especially the Colin Baker and Paul McGann stories. I heard they redeem a lot of the poor writing from their TV runs, and even manage to make Mel a little more tolerable too.

I have to admit Clara seems to be the better companion - it's awesome to see a companion who wants to protect the Doctor both from others and himself. She has so much potential but has not has much opertunity to shine yet.
One thing I would have liked is Tennant's now wife would have been a kick arse companion had she been given an oppertunity - with tons of potential for exposition about the Time Lords in the whole teaching her the past she is attached to - a missed oppertunity I think would have been better spent on her than on Donna.
Jack was pretty good but I think he always worked better in short bursts and with other companions.
This is kinda cool.

I'd say go for it, they're pretty great. Even the average stories aren't a bad way to pass two hours. Plus Paul McGann's voice is just amazing, along with Peter Davison's, even if he doesn't sound much like his younger self anymore.
And Colin Baker is awesome in his audio adventures. His character is the same, and they just happen to expand on it more than the tv series had the opportunity to. Haven't heard of any of his adventures with Mel, though.
From my experience with the classic series, I found myself disagreeing with most fans about certain episodes, feeling that they were a little overrated, and even enjoying a few of the serieals that are widely hated among the fandom. Part of that reason is because I watched the series out of order. I liked Remembrance of the Daleks, but since it was one of the first Dalek serials I'd seen, a lot of the backstory and lore behind them was lost on me. I have a feeling if I'd seen Genesis of the Daleks before, I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more. And speaking of Sylvester McCoy, while he's probably my least favorite Doctor, I thought some of the serials people hate to be somewhat enjoyable, if not for how bad they are. Time and the Rani and Paradise Towers are still pretty awful, but I remember kinda liking Delta and the Bannermen.
The first serial I watched with the Master was Mark of the Rani, and since the Master's schemes became so ridiculously complicated by that point in the series, I didn't really think much of him. Though I really did like Anthony Ainely's performance in Trial of a Time Lord, as well as Survival. It wasn't really until seeing the Roger Delgado incarnation that he really grew on me. His interactions with the third Doctor really fleshed out his character, and it was pretty nice to see somebody play a counterpart like he did.
While I felt he was more like the Heath Ledger version of the Joker, I also really liked John Simm's take on the Master. He was just too over-the-top not to like.
Finished The Tomb of the Cybermen. An exciting, not overly long story and good in shaping up some of the "mythology" behind Cybermen. Mind you I actually like these Cybermen more then those from the later seasons, they seem a bit too drone-like, aside from the controller who is usually blessed with something of a personality.
Honestly for me it's a toss up between the melodic chirping of these Cybermen, and the sing-along voices of the Tenth Planet ones.
But back to the story, Klieg is so utterly pathetic. The Cybermen betray him once, then they do it again while killing his associate and telling him they care nothing for promises, and yet he still believes he can take control of them. Even Season 7 Master would probably roll his eyes at how thick skulled this guy is.

I've been watching mostly Hulu Plus for classic episodes, but it's getting increasingly evil about leaving off important serials, especially where companions depart or are introduced. Youtube or Dailymotion usually has the fill-ins but the quality sucks. Other than spending too much money on DVDs that seem to only contain one serial per disk, what are my best options?

Recons aren't officialy endorsed by the BBC, so from what I hear you'd have to send Loose Cannon some rewritable media that they'd then write the recons to, and have to cover the shipping costs there and back from what I remember.
Uhhh….how do you feel about torrents? Because I used to have one with classic Who in its entirety (well, what has survived).

A lot of the first two doctors has been lost to the ages due to film wiping policies of the time, so they've taken what footage still exists and remade the inbetweens with production footage, still existing audio, and sometimes animation. Its about the best we can get all things considered.
Most of Troughton doesn't exist anymore, unfortunately. (Though we did get new stuff last year in a big find.)
It's a damn shame too because the 2nd Doctor is my favorite from Classic Who.

Oh yeah, I know about that, which is sad….Troughton was awesome.
What I was talking about wasn't the lost episodes form that era, but episodes form much later seasons that Hulu just left off for no good reason. Like they are missing "The Hand of Fear" and "The Face of Evil". If I didn't have an episode guide and I was just some person deciding to watch Doctor Who I'd be awfully lost wondering where Sarah Jane went and where Leela came from.
Finished The Abominable Snowmen. It was an entertaining story, though Travers is a bit of a dick, falsely accusing someone of murder just because of a percieved threat to his discovery.
Also something which comes with the territory, but still you have to admire them casting such fitting actors for the role, with traditional Tibetan names like Morris, Morgan or Llewellyn :P
