Well in all fairness, of Toei were to use the same methods that FUNi used for those far-too-shortlived Level sets, it would probably end up looking better than FUNi's sets did due to the fact that Toei has the original film-negatives, whereas FUNi's prints were in considerably less pristine condition… From what I can tell they are the best looking version we've gotten up till now though. And yeah, FUNi cancelling that by all accounts excellent release in favor of a product so heavily overfiltered that it makes the old Orange Bricks look faithful by comparison... as a fan of DBZ, I am offended. Again. Thank god I got all the Dragon Boxes while they were readily available, 'cause it sure looks like those are gonna remain the only competent English-language release of the entire Z-portion of the series.

That's kinda different though. DBZ was still using hand-drawn cells, whereas OP was using a digital medium. I'm not 100% keen on the process, but giving the HD treatment to anime that was done by cell is possible and can have beautiful results (DBZ Level BDs, Gunbuster BD, Tenchi OVA BDs, YYH BDs etc.) but when it comes to digital, the product was created w/ 480p in mind (DVD quality), the only thing they could do is upscale it. And even then, it would look either no different than putting the DVDs in a Bluray player, and in some cases, it can come out looking worse than the DVD. I've heard of such cases like w/ Funimation's in-house works. They put such shows as Ouran, Samurai Champloo, Chobits, and Tsubasa on BD by upscaling them to 1080p, but the end result is a picture that looks no better for the exception of maybe a few colors "popping" a bit more. But they are usually plagued w/ stairing on the lines and blurrings.

Off-topic: Damn Funimation for what they're doing to the new DBZ Season BD sets…just damn them. I'm just gonna buy the discontinued Level sets. Those BDs were the best DBZ has ever and will ever look, period. Don't care if that's all I can get, I am not supporting another faux 16:9 DBZ release. =_=

Back On-topic for DVDs: For the moment, I'm okay w/ there being a small break for Season 6 (and this is coming from someone that is REALLY looking forward to owning Thriller Bark). I've just fallen so behind on Season 5 due to stores just not carrying them and my inability to order stuff from online atm. So at least the break gives me time to catch up. XD

How lame. I even held off on buying those dbz sets. Hopefully they aren't out of print.

Sadly, same here. Since for the Level sets they were releasing them in 2's (1.1, 1.2, then 2.1, 2.2) I figured they'd just release a single set for every 2 (like what Funi did w/ Fairy Tail), but that wasn't gonna be the case. And yes, the Level sets are out of print and they have been for a long time now. But the silver lining is that some people don't really care about the Level sets because: 1.) they will never be complete, 2.) the only 2 sets released doesn't even cap the end of the Saiyan arc (the episode Vegeta is let go would've been in 2.1), and 3.) since the DBZ Season BD sets are coming out, people have simply forgotten the Levels (despite the fact they are the superior product). So at the very least, it won't cost you an arm and leg (like w/ the DBoxes) to get the 2 Level sets. I prefer to hold out hope that the money from ignorant masses (that supposedly voted 16:9 for the upcoming season sets) will one day go towards actually restarting the Level sets again…though that is still highly unlikely.

They did. They issued out a public survey…and somehow 16:9 faux widescreen still won despite the pictured example they used. It's beyond me at this point. But not only that, even I find the new BD season sets to look WAY too saturated...I mean, Picollo practically looking "neon green" should've been a red flag. There really is no excuse. All BD players have the "zoom" option. If people are so hung up on not wanting bars on the side, then they can zoom the picture and bam, it's exactly what the new sets are doing. =_=;

I just bought a couple of the earlier collections I had been missing and upscaled through the blu ray player they look damn fine. Well at least compared to whatever quality the episodes are on the stream, but that's another matter.

One minor complaint after watching some early commentaries though is that Mike repeated some of the same questions then and in the beginning of Skypiea. Luci tells the same story of her getting the call twice in response to the same type of question. It was still a different track with many other unique interactions and responses though, so it wasn't that big a deal.

Boy, these online discounts were the perfect time to catch up on all my Funimation purchases. Only five more sets to go before I'm all caught up.

As of this moment, she hasn't even spoken in the manga yet. Seems a mite too early to speculate.

She has spoken a little bit actually, but only in one scene.

The voice could be anybody with a childish voice really, though. It does seem too early to speculate seeing as how FUNi is years away from reaching this point.

There is a new interview with the OP brand manager on the newest episode of the toonami podcast and a friend who listened to it said they are still working on the season 6 contract so I'm starting to think we should assume (A) recording hasn't happened yet or (B) They are allowed to record and what not, but they aren't allowed to officially say they have season 6.

Anyone have even the slightest inkling when collection 9 will drop, or for that matter, if they even have plans to continue producing the collections? I prefer not to purchase voyages due to space concerns, but the collection box sets are now over 100 episodes behind. :(

The Collections are meant to carry that disadvantage of being released way later. More episodes and a cheaper price but a much longer wait, that's the point. Otherwise there'd be no point getting the Voyages.

Um, why would this cover be weird? The fight between those two is basically the only significant thing that happens in that set of episodes, it looks epic as hell too.

All I notice is Ace's fire doesn't look as "Flamey" as I would expect fire to be animated. Certainly not equivalent to how it looks in the episode, but then that might get changed later on since its a prototype

Because it's only one episode of the set and it's still weird they decided not to do the fans make a cover contest thing.

I'm a bit surprised they took an action packed canon moment for this new cover when they completely missed the opportunity for Luffy vs. Aokiji on Season 4 Voyage 2.

They never gave an official date or announcement for the cover contest. They mentioned it during an interview at Otakon (or Anime Expo, I might be wrong) and never brought it up again.

Sounds like the uproar over strong world's initial cover made them start listening. We've only gotten good covers since. Three good covers in a row is a record.

Wasn't expecting volume 6, had assumed that the filler arc would kick off season 6.

Hopefully season 6 will be announced soon. That said we have been very spoiled in getting the past 2 seasons in quick succession. Ive no problem waiting until the summer.

I don't know how you thought that, seeing as FUNimation licensed these episodes along with the rest of season 5 back in July last year.

Well yes but I had heard they revised the announcement of which episodes they had. Expected Season 5 to end with the Ace/Blackbeard fight.

That's never happened. When they announce a certain number of episodes, those are all the ones purchased and planned for release.
