As much as I find myself warming up to that motto of Greg Weisman's; "never the end," that's quite what I've been thinking for a while now, Robby. I often wonder whether it's a strength or a weakness, that the world of Young Justice is so huge. On one hand, the overwhelming potential is all sorts of alluring, and shows how one can create an epic story without the world it's based in being centered around that story. On the other, this series leaves a larger hole by it's absence than anything else I've ever seen. I appreciate the large world, but when they only have 20 episodes to work with they really should cut some stuff. And I agree that the cliffhanger was uncalled for, not that it bothers me. I was going to curse the show's cancellation either way.
Young Justice RETURSN OMG
-
-
This ending kind of remind me of Wolverine and the X-Men…them and their damn cliffhanger ending. Of course Wolverine was a diff channel but still, both of them I liked a lot.
-
Eh, it's less anoying as I knew that it was the end.
Besides, there weren't many misteries left, just new plot points raising.
I still would have loved to see if the Light shakes up it's membership, Replacing the captured members or taking Rahs' dead as a "Disgrace" as Ocean Master's.
Oh, there's a small mistery, what happened to him?
-
@RobbyBevard:
Put some of the blame where the blame where its due.
Blame the SHOW CREATORS who decided to end on a cliffhanger.
Don't forget DC, who charges a healthy licensing fee for these characters and takes a share of the profits while Cartoon Network has to pay production costs.
Young Justice was a really expensive show that wasn't generating merchandising revenue; had it been a few years ago, advertising probably would have been enough to support it based on its excellent ratings, but television doesn't work that way anymore.

http://s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=1032Anybody follow the Ask Greg Weisman thing? A couple times I've looked he seems pretty crabby when getting some criticism.
And since it was brought up in GL:tAS thread,

He's been doing it for 20 years, and while it used to be great, at this point for every 1 good interesting question or story or critique, he literally gets 100-200 stupid questions (that anyone on the forum could answer in five seconds rather than him doing it a year later) or repeats to things that he's already answered a dozen times that are easily found in the FAQ… or people asking for spoilers that he obviously can't and won't give.
Last time I checked the backlog it had about 700 questions in it and maybe 10 were interesting or good. A LOT of them were dumb. I'd be cranky too if doing something in my free time led to that kind of frustration.

As far as Im concerned, this cancellation now was likely a good thing; cartoons like YJ are like Sports Celebrities - best to retire in the prime on a high note, rather than become worn out and go off with damaged popularity.

Not when we could have had darkseid and more focus on Tim Drake and Motherfucking Static. You shut your mouth.

Young Justice has, without a doubt, the largest world I've ever seen in a work of fiction. It is filled to the brim and spilling over with potential stories. Better yet, it has a man at it's head that is passionate about those stories. It's a fantastic show, and it's biggest problems came from it's lack of alloted episodes. Finishing this early is certainly worse than continuing on. 2 seasons or 20 seasons, I think Young Justice would have remained a high-quality series.
-

OK, first of all, TYPED this; dont you mean "turn off your keyboard" or something?
Second, I loved YJ, but if they ended the series now while it is on a high note: I will be happy with that. Im not saying YJ would have gone downhill, but when you push your luck (especially with characters like these who have many different versions already) there is chance for big screw ups. For Example: The Live-Action Transformers Movies, Justice League and JLU or DBZ and the following DBGT supresses vomiting. I just think its better leaves much to the imagination. -

Nothing there that isn't true of Oda and look how he handles it.
Anyway, reading those sequences cut from finale makes me think a lot of those cuts were for the best where pacing is concerned.

Not half as bad as the timeskip. And I don't think lack of episodes was the problem half as much as setting up a plotline that couldn't be resolved in the number of episodes you're guaranteed to have.
It's one thing if your show is cancelled early for some reason, but if anybody ought to know to avoid setting up dangling plotlines, it's Greg Weisman.

Second, yes there's always a chance it will go downhill but no one ever just assumes that with no evidence or preexisting situation to back it up. Name any great show EVER that last more than 2 seasons and ask yourself if it would have been better if they canceled it after 2 seasons?JL,Simpsons, Static Shock, Boy Meets world, One Piece, Cheers, Rugrats, DBZ, Seinfeld, Friday night lights, Mr. Rogers neighborhood, The list goes on and on. You would never say about any of these shows "eh it's nice that they got long lifespans but if they had canceled it after season 2 I wouldn't have cared."
-
Nothing there that isn't true of Oda and look how he handles it.
Oda deals with a far lesser quantity, and ignores story questions almost entirely.

I was including the timeskip in my assessment. I know this is basically impossible, but if they'd been given the go ahead for as many seasons as they wanted, the time skip wouldn't have been necessary. I agree that Weisman's biggest flaw in this case is setting up more than he can follow through with: if he had more episodes it would be far less of a problem.
-

This just doesn't sound accurate. The creator of the biggest manga in Japan (and also big internationally) gets less questions/fan mail than Weisman? I highly doubt it.
Also, most of the fans who wanted a Darkseid arc fail to take into account that Weisman wanted another time-skip after this season. For all we know, that arc would've been glossed over as well and we would've only seen the aftermath (like with Jason's time as Robin/death)…

It would be simply ridiculous for Darkseid to be foreshadowed at the end of season 2 if he intended to take such a route. I realize that plot elements have been handled in such a way with the first timeskip, but that is such a massive aspect that he didn't even need to introduce, I couldn't buy that he'd do that. Still, we'll never know either way.
-
Nothing there that isn't true of Oda and look how he handles it.
He picks and chooses what he wants to answer. And wallows in and encourages the stupid. I'm sure a hundred fans ask him "so, was this character on this page actually this thing?" but then he only answers it once. And if he wants to ignore it entirely he just doesn't answer it, rather than responding every single time "I'm not going to answer that just yet." He doesn't give the same reply to the next hundred people that ask it for 20 years.
If Weisman took a similar approach to ask Greg, where he just skipped the repeat/dumb/spoiler questions rather than answering them all, and just did the ones he wanted… well he'd get through the backlog faster, be more up to date and probably have a better time with it. As is it's pretty crazy he does the open question/answer thing as readily as he does.

But, they had to fit in two decades of thousands of comics worth of material into 40 episodes! They HAD to!
…or they could have picked a few targets and focused on those.

While their main website is down for a relaunch, the people of SMGO took to Tumblr to inform the masses that there's a small spark of hope for YOUNG JUSTICE and GREEN LANTERN: THE ANIMATED SERIES to continue. Specifically, the people behind SMGOtv are poised to launch a crowdfunded campaign (think Kickstarter) to save the two fan favorite animated shows but they must first receive the official OK from WB Animation. If they get approval, fans will be able to finance more material for the shows (episodes, OVA, film, etc.). If you want to see more YJ and GL:TAS then continue to make your voices heard right up till the April 11th meeting.

Part of me doesn't see that working out long term even if they get the greenlight. Hell I'd settle for a comic adaptation at this point.
-
There is a Young Justice comic currently out.
-
It isn't doing too well in sales either if I recall correctly.
-
Yeah the Young Justice comic that tied into the tv show was also cancelled iirc.

Over this last weekend I rewatched the entire series. My god I forgot how much better the first season was. The character overload in the second season was definitely one of the major weaknesses in the second season over the first. It's not like any of the characters are uninteresting to a major degree…just we never could focus on all of them because the only ones we'd focus on were the ones relevant to the plot. While this works out with certain characters like Blue Beetle and Impulse --who I really enjoyed-- certain characters got the shaft or had certain plots hinted at and then dropped. An example is the relationship between Tim and Dick. The first episode of season 2 shows a bit of it, as does other episodes such as Impulse's intro episode, but it's overshadowed by the second half of that season where the plot is focused on the Reach 100% after they are revealed.
I really would have liked to see more of other characters such as Mal or Wonder Girl, however they just simply weren't relevant to the plot so we only got brief moments with them in the spotlight.
One thing I did notice was that in Impulse's intro episode, Neutron mentions that the entire timeline should have been fixed all at once after Bart went back. This implies that despite the fact that they saved the earth from the Reach, Forty years into the future the earth would still be in an apocalyptic state. I'm assuming that this would have been focused on in the third season.
I will say that the decision to have a timeskip after the first season really screwed with the feeling of the show. I understand the point of it. Weisman wanted to pretty much show his own interpretation of this Universe and contain as much depth as it could, however that ended up simply not working well when the entire first half of the second season is revealing things that happened in the timeskip.

Just started watching this show and im about 15 episodes in, but what is up with cartoon network canceling the show?

It was expensive, didn't get amazing ratings or sell toys, and the second season had a lot of problems.
-
^ If questionable writing decisions in a follow-up season were grounds enough to get a show canceled why is Ben 10 still around? I know why FYI.

j o h n n y t e s t
why do you live when others must die

CN/Warner bros:I know, let's bring back the teen titans but make them in Johnny test style

Cause Cartoon Network owns it completely and thus gets all the merchandising, still does well in the ratings, and the toys sell really well apparently. Why do you think Ben gets a new set of aliens every season?
Also, while Ben 10 has timeskips, it never uses them to introduce 200 characters and then spend the next 9 episodes badly explaining what happened during the jump while ignoring large chunks of the cast. And the cast really never exceeds three leads… partly because Ben has all the alien forms.
Basically, Ben 10 may do stupid stuff, but the casual audience can keep up with it without any trouble.

To hell if I know on all accounts I'm still trying to figure out what the hell they did to Big Chill and Spider-Monkey and why.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this but CN seems to have a habit of canceling shows based off of DC Comics properties after two seasons or at least greenlighting that many seasons. I mean you have Young Justice, Green Lantern, Generator Rex, Both Justice League series. I'll be shocked if Beware The Batman and Teen Titans Go outlive those shows
-
Generator Rex wasn't a licensed DC show though. It also got a fairly large episode order upfront; it's just that the merchandising didn't take off (little wonder why since almost the entire line was Rex variants) and they buried the show as a result.
I figure Teen Titans Go! will probably stick around for a while; the show looks dirt cheap and the franchise has been successful at moving merchandise in the past. Depends on whether or not it's as terrible as the previews make it appear to be.
-

I figured I should've researched that better but no. I wanted to put TBATB but it's 13 episode 3rd season confuses the hell of me.

Certainly wouldn't be the worse thing CN kept around if it is indeed terrible.
-
I preferred Season 1 anyways so I actually wasn't as annoyed as other fans when they cancelled this show.
They did the timeskip way too soon for my tastes because the pre timeskip versions of the characters still had a lot of potential and they never got to fully use it either. Coupled with the fact they not only tried to do way too much in the new season with not only the timeskip but also the ALIEN INVASION plot line and the introduction of way too many new characters at once it was a dud in my opinion. Shame too because the series had a lot of untapped potential…
-
I read a tumblr article saying that Warner/DC was more to blame for the cancellation of GL and YJ
Said GL was because the movie flopped and YJ was because the sales of action figures dropped after season 2
-
Now YJ being canceled because of it's toyline I can kind of understand somewhat. But Green Lantern being canceled because of the movie's failure…is stupid to point of me hoping that it's not true.
-
There was only a tepid attempt at making merchandise for the Green Lantern series since retailers were already stuck with a bunch of stuff related to the film.
These shows aren't cheap to make to begin with even without having to pay licensing fees and those are apparently really high. Those licensing fees played a big part in Teen Titans getting cancelled; the show got great ratings and moved a ton of merchandise, but CN had to split that revenue with DC. I think it's been said that they were going to increase the fees on Teen Titans even more since they wanted Robin for KidsWB's The Batman.
-
In hindsight The Batman wasn't that bad. It's just… the series that had to follow the Timm/Dini/Burnett run.
And it wasn't that good.
-
Yeah even without comparing it to BTAS like everybody else does with any new Batman series and judging it on it's own merits not too good. But certainly not Kids WB worst program which I think we all might have differing views on. @Ubiq:

So greed is bad? At least for people who wanted more Teen Titans.I wonder if that's what killed Static Shock too.
-
The Batman was okay, but why the fuck did Bruce Wayne look like a rejected design of Jackie Chan? Not to mention Joker being godawful.
-
The Joker was the only thing The Batman did that was interesting and unique, far as I'm concerned. It was a slightly different out of the box take and an interesting change of pace. The surprise twist of Clayface was pretty good too, even if it was basically just stealing Two-Face's origin.
Now, the Penguin doing Kung Fu was not so good.
-
The Batman was okay, but why the fuck did Bruce Wayne look like a rejected design of Jackie Chan?
Well the designs were done by the same guy who did Jackie Chan Adventures. And since were mentioning how The Batman handled certain characters can I mention how I hated Killer Croc stereotypical cajun accent though I can't hate it too much since he was voiced by Ron Perlman.
-
So greed is bad? At least for people who wanted more Teen Titans. I wonder if that's what killed Static Shock too.
It ran on KidsWB so I doubt it. That was probably just a 52 episode rule situation; that's enough episodes to run ten and a half weeks Monday to Friday or a whole year on a weekly basis before running out of episodes.
-
I know this is old and the show is canceled, but i had to express how awesome this show was and even though i knew it was canceled, i watched it anyway knowing full well that afterwards i would bitch and whine over the injustice of how it got canceled, but time well spent watching it none the less.
Also I heart Kid Flash & Impulse. -
I wonder where you're watching the show seeing as how CN won't even so much as air this on Boomerang (anymore).
-
I know when I watched the show I went online to watch it. You could always buy the DVD sets as well, thats what I did for Legend of Korra.
-
Not great news.
The cutscenes from the videogame, it looks awful, but it does cover part of the timeskip.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
It looks terribly stupid, why allow 3 people squad to have Superboy around while a damn door can't be opened?
At leas the voice acting is nice, and answers a few holes from the timeskip.
-

Prolly cuz season2 had them all grown up and it was a lot more darker compared to the first season. They should never have done that imo, and of course not enuff of Kid Flash either….
-
…why would you bump this thread to reply to a comment from literally, over a year ago?
-
To be fair it was bumped right before he did with a link to the more recent game cutscenes.
