Did you come to these conclusions yourself, or is that just what everyone around you says? The Dalai Lama is about as profound as Justin Bieber is a good musician, in that both are basically fabricated personas and were thrust into fame by others.
Also, the whole Tibet situation (and the Dalai Lama's stance) is a lot more complicated and controversial than most people care to look into, and I would wager than 95% of people who preach for a "free Tibet" don't know much at all. It's just a fad the way supporting Chavez in Venezuela was a (very embarrassing) fad among liberals, at least in the United States.
If you are interested in consuming some of the information in a humorous fashion (albeit admittedly biased, both for personal and entertainment purposes), Penn & Teller did an episode of "Bullshit!" about it.
But I mean I'm sure he does say some interesting things. The same way Justin Bieber songs actually seem like good music to some people.
There is so much I can type about this, but I will just leave you with this for now: I grew up in various parts of North and North-East India, and have known loads of Tibetians growing up, so I probably know more about the "whole Tibet situation" than you can ever imagine.
