Monet survived because Ceaser is a mad scientist doctor and actually gave her a second heart as an experiment, which is why he was willing to trade it away.
Monet survived because she's secretly in love with someone and they truly have her heart.
Monet survived because the heart of a woman can not be underestimated.
Monet survived because she ate some spicy noodles earlier and just had sudden some heart burn.
Monet survived because Aokiji was on the scene and saw to it that she got immediate medical attention.
Monet survived because a honeybadger happened to walk into the room and saved her.
Monet survived because the room was cold enough that her logia state blah blah blah.
Monet survived because insert random Oda SBS joke here.
The how she survives is NOT important. The fact is she will.
@advance:
When Pell survives an explosion offscreen, he only needs to say, "I flew away fast enough to avoid the brunt of the explosion. You only assumed that I died because you couldn't see what happened." It has an in-story explanation for why the reader was mistaken.
But Pell NEVER said that.
He simply survived. Oda never gave an explanation. It was just what happened.
Pagaya was utterly destroyed by a giant bolt of lightning destroying everything around him.
He simply survived. Oda never gave an explanation. It was just what happened.
A pirate bit off his tounge, and was declared dead by doctors.
He simply survived. Oda never gave an explanation. It was just what happened.
Bon Kurei was seconds away from being killed by Magellan.
He simply survived. Oda never gave an explanation. It was just what happened.
So on and so forth. Oda rarely actually explains how or why people survive, they just do. Extrapolation is then up to the reader. You can say "Pell tossed the bomb and wasn't at the center" but you can just as easily say "he took the entire force of the blast but his will was strong enough he survived." "Pagaya was just knocked down and out of sight" and "Blackbeard interupted and Bon fled to the hidden Hell floor", but Oda never goes into detail. Ocassionally he'll throw in a "I'm sure they're okay" or a "the doctors got him to the hospital", if they're minor enough he's never going to get back to them. but usually he doesn't with dialogue characters.
Oda will usually throw in a little small detail to let you reach these sorts of conclusions and extrapolations, however. The icepick being straight up and not in the cube, and Monet coughing blood BEFORE that attack, are two of those things.
I think Lucchi is the only case where a character was left for dead that he had to go out of his way to show how he escaped and got better with actual hospital time. (While the rest of CP9 was fine. All rescued the same way, but they weren't in bad shape.) Other cases like Mr. 3 surviving being eaten by a crocodile, Pauly making a fast bridge, Geddatsu falling to earth, or Igaram surviving the boat explosion are within the flow of the story. Others still like Sabo surviving are left vauge but obvious for story reasons. Other unconscious and bloodied "dead" characters like Hachi or the killer snow bunnies just get up after the arc is done, without any explanation at all. Oda has gone out of his way to state that Arlong, irredeemable monstrous mother-murdering Arlong, is still alive.
It'll be exactly the same here. She'll just get up and be alive and well, no further analysis needed. Any personal justification you need, is what I've been offering, if you need a "they didn't die because…" explanation. I've offered like 30 different explanations now and none of them are needed, I don't care about any of them and wouldn't have given it any thought if not for this thread. They can all be correct, or all wrong, or she could even be stabbed, and it does not matter.
In-story? Won't be anything specific, unless she actually gets the next cover story, in which case her survival and hunt for her heart might be showcased at a little bit of length.
