Oda's INSPIRATION for One Piece

@Bad-Beat:

I remember Cosmic saying something like "Holy crap, Paulie's turned into Homer Simpson in this pic!" when someone posted it in the captions thread, and kind of forgot about it until earlier today. Speaking of which, you're right, I've had this avatar for months. Maybe it's time for a change?
-
I saw someone post this in "Picture Battle!"
Who does he remind you of?
-
It's either Mr. 5 or Gedatsu.
-
Thats Weird Al Yankovich with his hair like Coolio's….
-
Bon Clay's swans are probably inspired by Bjork's dress.
-
I was going for Gedatsu.
-
This may be a stretch, but with all the Zoans lately I thought of what Kumadori might look like as an animal, and all that came up was this guy.
I think it was the staff, posture, hair, and the markings around Kumadoris eyes. They're both rather obessed with destiny, and are both pretty loony…But agian, it might just be me. -
That is looney. But, is that a devil fruit he got there? XD
-
It isn't characters, but it's still about Oda's inspirations:
Marijoa's castle has similarities with Chambord in France.
And Drum's castle is obviously inspired by Neuschwanstein in Bavaria.
-
WOW! How do you guys find all of this? I never even thought about like….any of it. xD But these are awesome!
-
I was going for Gedatsu.
Then its Coolio whose the influence, Yankovich dosen't usually look like that.
-
I'd say Weird Al may have been an inspiration for Usopp.
-
Nobody saw this? O_o
-
In Japan, Muttley is known as Kan-Kan. Or was it Ken-Ken? Ehh, that was something Ueno-san told me ten years or so ago, so I forgot already. Sorry I've nothing to contribute at this time.
-
haha, good one! i kinda saw it, but thought nothing of it at the time…
anyway, i was reading the first volume of Dr. Slump (great manga!) and I found this....
…coincidence? or inspiration? don't know if there's a backstory to why deities would have those circle things on their backs. and we all know how Oda loves Toriyama XD
-
And I have a stupid question: what's the meaning of the simbol inside the circles? That 3 balls floating around…I've seen in others manga too.

Well Oda-sama is a HUGE Toriyama fan.
I think I had a Link Between One Piece and that Movie Blues Brothers Brothers. But I forgot.
And I think those are just decoration
EDIT: Oh yea. I was waaaayy off. You think that JK Rowling is a OP Fan? I mean, have you ever Compared the Tri-Wizard tornament to the Davy Back fights? Both Have three rounds, Both have a round where you have a type of Race, Both have a round where you need to Obtain something and get it somewhere to win, and Then there's a one on one fight agains't something. Either Rowling Copied off Oda sama or Oda-sama copied off Rowling. Just a therory.

Well, the World Government agents have clothes and hats that make them look like the Blues Brothers.
-
That's not inspiration or a coincidence, the japanese god of thunder has those drums in his back (take a wild guess why do they imagine him with drums).
-
Has anyone ever seen a movie called "The Ref"? With Denis Leary? Has anyone noticed that Leary's suit makes him look ALOT like Sanji?
Btw: I'm sorry I can't give you pics. I don't know how to get screen shots from video feed.
-
That's not inspiration or a coincidence, the japanese god of thunder has those drums in his back (take a wild guess why do they imagine him with drums).
If anyone saw the begining of the Teen Titans episode "Forces of Nature" you'd get this right off the bat like me. XD
I too am interested in what those 3 dots mean, they are in Naruto too.
-
This isn't the best picture, but ever since I saw both of them, I've just thought of the similarity.
-
I don't see it…and who is she?
-
That's not inspiration or a coincidence, the japanese god of thunder has those drums in his back (take a wild guess why do they imagine him with drums).
ah, thanks for the info, I shoulda done my research. I shoulda figured it was more of a historical reference, but I never woulda thought about it if I never read Dr. Slump =/

Genius on the Shura comparison.

I was browsing through the french Wikipedia's pages on pirates, and I found something interesting. It's about this french pirate Olivier Levasseur, nicknamed "La buse" (the buzzard), who was executed in 1730. Just before he died, he threw a piece of paper in the crowd, saying "here's my treasure for the one who'll understand!". On the paper was a cryptogram. Here's what it looked like:
Interesting uh? Maybe the inspiration for Gol D Roger and the Poneglyphs.
-
that is purley awesome. That is an incredible find. Just amazing.
-
oh wow, what an amazing find! that would be pretty awesome if that was inspiration for gol d roger… right when i saw it, i immediately thought of the poneglyphs
-
Holy shit.
We like need to bring that to everyones attention on the forum.
Do you realize how much that probably confirms about the Polyglyphes and the One Piece itself? -
Good finding
It's a real good possiblity that Gol D. Roger and Poneglyphs are inspired in Olivier Levasseur and his cyrptogram
That a good question to put to Oda in a SBS
-
Anyone notice that Enel's face looks like Eminem's?
In fact, I even did an AMV about the similarity…
-
And I have a stupid question: what's the meaning of the simbol inside the circles? That 3 balls floating around…I've seen in others manga too.
Those are the mitsudomoe, one of the marks that represent Hachiman, the Japanese deity of war. I assure you, it's not just that simple though. Wikipedia can give you a good start on how complex the fellow really is and how what he represents has changed over time.
Aldrich dude…..
You've stepped on a landmine of information. I just found some more cool shit, I'll post it here soon.
Okay I haven't been able to find much about this fellow in English but what I have is most interesting. In a strange pdf file from Google which appears to be a fanzine of some sort, it details the death of the pirate and states that his hidden treasure is estimated to be "astronomical".
http://www.fabrica.it/Projects/FABMAG/fab05.pdf page 9
It also states that his last words were. "This is where my treasure is hidden! Find it if you can…you fools!" Whether that's true or not I dunno, I don't speak French like our bud Aldrich so...
Anyway, the cryptogram is described there as never being decoded according to the article but it seems there's an attempt at it on the French wikipedia but again, I have no idea.
Supposedly last Fall, Martin Elneff, a TV producer wanted to take up the task up finding the treasure. I'll let you know if I can dig up anything else.
MAN THIS IS SO COOL!!!!
This Elneff fellow's e-mail address is listed as martin@frontier.as
Maybe he has some more information on it.It appears he has several names….OH and he sailed with Samuel Bellamy ^O^ http://www.geocities.com/tokyo/garden/5213/labouche.htm
-
How the hell did I miss that? I seach Wikipedia for that all the time for that! o well. I do honor that find!
Oda-sama would be proud!
-

He did say something among these lines… The exact line in french is "mes trésors à qui saura comprendre!", which is literally translated as "my treasure to those who'll understand!"
As for the cyptogram, it has been decoded, (LeVasseur wrote it in a code used by the Knights Templar) but it didn't make much sense in french either. However, it supposedly lead to stones where other symbols where engraved in, like animals, a heart, a young woman's face, an open eye etc.
Needless to say, no one found out what it meant. Yet.

This was posted a long time ago, I think Oda confirmed that he was inspired by Eminem because he's a big fan of him.

One guy think Jango is Micheal Jackson + Elton John is wrong!
Steve Tyler (lead singer from Aerosmith), he definally straight up Jango! Look at him and Jango. Huge Mouth, same nose, same jaw, both can sing, both wear glasses, both wear hat! XP
Jango look nothing like Micheal Jackson, except he can dance like him. But his apperence is more of Steve Tyler!
-
I knew it! I knew Jango was based on someone I knew!
Cool pics, man. Very convincing.
-
:content:
-
That is very funny, but most likely not for the reason you posted it.
-
…um. Is that 'green hair' thing supposed to be a Zoro/Fukurou reference or what? >>

Thats awesome! Also, I noticed "Olivier Levasseur" play with the name Olivier and you get "Olvia".

He's probably all 3, maybe not Elton John (DonFlamingo takes that) but you can't deny Michael Jackson is the inspiration to the moves and the clothes.
-
I think I used to say that Jango was like Steve Tyler and Micheal Jackson's bastard child er something…. but yes, he looks like Steve Tyler and he dances like Micheal Jackson... his face is so dead on its scary... all Tyler needs is those heart-shaped glasses and he'd be Jango!
-

Talking bout DoFlamingo…whenever I see him, I can't help but think he looks somewhat like Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers). It might just be me though....
-
That would be so awesome if Steve Tyler cosplayed as Jango. I would pay to see that.
-
someone from earlier post about the Trockadero
I look up on the website.. Look what I found…
The guy in the yellow tutu look really like Mr. 2.. So…creepy! The hair...the lip... the eyes... the grin..... shudder

In the second image it looks like he IS wearing heart shapped glasses. Look closely.

Umm..izzit just me or is there a striking similarity?
