@DarthAsthma:
As we are nearing the end of the year I'm kin of interested how people here decide on their game(s) of the year.
Personally I kind of despise going by weird arbitrary scores and such. My main criteria has been for the last few years how much I think a game will stick with me in my mind.
Which just leaves me with only 2 games for now the walking dead telltale game and journey. Other things like assassins creed 3 were a lot of fun but really most of them felt more like ah I already played this or in the case of ac3 that ac2 was a pretty awesome game when it came out. I'm kind of saddened by Mass Effect because to honest that game has a lot of moments that can stick with you but the ending kind of made most of them meaningless to me. The one with mordin still outshines it though so maybe honorary mentions for me.
Not sure how I feel about persona 4 golden since although it has quite a bit of new content it's a rerelease so not sure if it's fair to have it in the list. I think the only title that's been big that I haven't touched(which doesn't mean that I played all the others to completion) this year is borderlands 2 due disenchantment of lootbased game caused by diablo 3.
For me it's a few things that I consider
- Did the game work? Or was I required to download an endless amount of patches before it did?
- How big was the game hyped? And in the end, did it live to the hype?
- Was it memorable? Do I still fondly look back on playing it?
- How much playtime did I get out of it? Was it short and boring? or short and great? or long and boring with dull grinding? or long with a great story and if there was grinding, was it fun?
So after narrowing it down I end up with about 3 or 4 games that were really good this year. And then start nit-picking them after.
If I'm going for American standards. Xenoblade is the best game out this year by far. Just ticked so many boxes with me. However really that was last years game and you guys just got it late. Surprisingly Nintendoland is doing a lot of stuff for me. Despite it not having online. The games are just so much fun and aside from the odd one or two an individual mini game there feels more full than most Full releases. Tales of Graces is another game I got a lot of fun out of. Just never completing it due to dull grinding. But still enjoyed it a helluva lot more than others.
Handheld wise….hmmmm. Gonna go with Kid Icarus. Dodgy controls aside it was a great and rewarding games. Although I cannot comment on hyped up ones like Ragnarock and Persona since they aren't out till next year here.
